atlanta beltline

- subarea 3

Atlanta’s plan to redevelop the 22 mile beltline railroad track is an ambitious and huge undertaking. the track circles the perimeter of downtown atlanta and will be key to promoting alternative transportation and infill development through out the city. each area along the track is divided into subareas according to their communities specific wants and needs. subarea 3, through charrettes, discovered it wants to focus on 3 main principals. they want green, diverse and historically reverent development in their area. the Boulevard Crossing subarea planning process integrates greenspaces, circulation, land use, and public arts to complete a comprehensive master plan and implementation strategy. they want increased greenspace, enhanced mobility, economic development and vibrant, live-work-play communities.

i chose to redevelope an area around a proposed green space. i thought it provided the most interesting design posibilitiies. i used the information provided by the atlanta beltline report to develop a program for the site that satisfies the needs of the community and is also environmentally sensitive. i avoided changing the natural water runoff path and instead hope to improve the sites ecosystem by restoring its forested areas and planting a wetland for natural water filtraition. i wanted to not just restore the area but to improve it for future generations.

bcp master plan the new master plan for this beltline site will be a landmark to experience. The park is shaped to reflect the natural topographic changes in the land. the curvilinear designs move visitors through the sights many interesting features. from the farm to the restored wetland, the site has all the defining natural habitats in georgia. People can learn about our region while exercising, playing sports, enjoying the native plants or walking their dogs. The new boulevard park will be a catalyst for development in the new subarea 3 beltline district of atlanta.

this grand entrance plaza is the main gateway into the new park. It showcases the piedmont and atlanta region with its native plant displays and signature georgia fountain. The fountain placement represent cities in georgia and the spray size represents the cities’ population. There is a covered walkway with beautiful views into the park and toward the atlanta skyline. there is handicap access throughout the park and many covered bike parking places. there is a public restroom with showers for people biking to the site then riding the transit to work. the new boulevard crossing park and plaza has everything an ecologically sustainable and awe inspiring park needs to become a landmark for the region.

views into the boulevard crossing plaza the picture to the left shows the placement and views out of the plaza and into the site. It is built on the highest point of the park allowing it a commanding view of it’s surroundings. the top left picture highlights the scale of the plaza. there is plenty of room for gatherings and enjoying the outdoors. the above picture showcases the relationship of atlanta to the plaza. The skyline view is prominent and an interesting view any time one visits the plaza.

golf course master plan amicalola country club dawsonville, ga

this is a redesign of a north georgia golf club. it features an 18 hole course showcasing the natural topographic changes in the land. there are long down hill drives and chip shots over the numerous on site streams.

view of dramatic slope into wetlands

the last hole on the course calls for a heroic carry over a steep hillside, sliding into the wetlands. the green is nestled in sand traps so pinpoint accuracy is a must. the slightly undulating green will roll a hard struck shot into the shallow bunkers. this par 3 hole is a challenging way to finish your round. view on to the green 13

infill housing community

This design needed to maximize the number of houses on a small tract of land but still create privacy for the residents. The area uses shared community space instead of larger sprawling yards. Each lot can be personalized to the residents preference. There is a community pool and private picnic area. The walking path and grassy lawns promote a healthy living and welcome residents to enjoy the outdoors. 16

This yard design features a koi pond with an arbor. residents can enjoy grilling on the deck or lounging outdoors.

this is a more formal yard with a classical fountain and flowering shrubs. There is a shaded sitting area to enjoy the sights and fragrances of the garden.

the most modern design features a large cut granite walkway leading to a multi-level patio. water flows under the deck creating a exciting and dynamic environment.

jekyll island internship - 2011 20

jia design work through out my summer internship, i was tasked with a wide range of jobs. i surveyed existing parking lots and redesigned them to better fit the area. i made staking plans and laid out the new bike trails. i installed many planting beds of various shapes and sizes and made plans for dune habitat restoration. i worked with the jekyll island authority to find the best site for a new dog park. i surveyed existing dog parks in the area and compiled a list of criteria.

option 1 - airport dog park

- at least 1 acre - easily accessed by the community - double gated entrances - separate areas for large and small dogs - access to water - not disrupt the historic areas in the island - 45 degree fence corners so the dogs do not get trapped

i found 2 optimal sites on the island and made plans. option 1 was next to the airport and utilized the existing fence. option 2 was next to an existing parking area. We had a presentation to the board of directors. as of march 2011 the project is still in progress.

option 2 - dog park with existing parking 21
