historical research: henderson on chisenhale road
Gillian Alexander Skipping, Chisenhale Road 1951
From Henderson, the architects discovered the values of the street which formed a 'microcosmic' world in which the street games change with the seasons and the hours are reflected in the cycle of street activity. Redefining the role of the street in urban planning, the Smithsons presented their ideas through this work to an international congress of architects in 1953 (CIAM). The impact of their ideas subsequently led to the demise of heroic Modern architecture. ALison an Peter SMithson CIAM Grille, 1953
“From Henderson, the architects discovered the values of the street which formed a 'microcosmic' world in which the street games change with the seasons and the hours are reflected in the cycle of street activity.”

NIGEL HENDERSON AND HIS DOCUMENTATION OF PLAY ON CHISENHALE ROAD
Spaces designated for play in the local Mile End seem tinged with regret
The Chisenhale Road site is now frequented by artists, dancers and a world renowned gallery. Despite this elevation in its cultural image, it has lost its intrinsic connection with the local area. Despite the closure of the factory building in the 1980s the area has remained residential and increasingly gentrified. There is no binding force in the local area. Victoria and Mile end parks, though beautiful pieces of green, lack intimacy and have implications on the city scale. The intention is to reconnect the surrounding area through the creation of a public space that will provide a new locus and reconnect the community with the Factory Site. Consequently creating greater local interest in the artistic community that presides there.
An interest in Henderson and East End Play Parks, through Nils Norman (adventure playgrounds) lead me to create a new public space and creche for the area, all revolving around the kind of play that has disappeared from our parks and our streets.
Ground Floor Plan
The Chisenhale Road factory in the ‘40s and ‘50s was closely associated with the surrounding streets. The terraces that built up around it were directly linked with the site for the workers were housed here. A school was also provided - the whole area had a strong connection to the Chisenhale Works. At this time Nigel Henderson moved onto Chisenhale Road and begun his meticulous depiction of the east end of London which, unbeknownst to him at the time, was instrumental in forming a new direction in modern architecture.

The Clean (indoor) play area will be well insulated and have a direct connection with south light It requires plumbing for a small sink and electricity. It is space heated The Messy (out door) play area will be lightly insulated from the cold and will only have a small source of heat. It requires plumbing for a sink and will capture north light
The Story Telling Box will track the dynamic south light as it penetrates the windows. The space will be extremely well insulated and have indirect top lighting The floor will be heated
controlling the frame: rules of the game
The frame becomes rationalised. On the interior the rhythm of the bays reiterate the concrete structure of the existing building and their spacing is taken from the existing steel frame.
[frame studies 1:50]
STRUCTURAL APPRAISAL STRUCTURAL ORDER The internal frame is constructed from soft wood timber. Columns run the height of the building and bare the weight down to the ground.
The frame then extends to the exterior
Existing Brick non-load bearing facia, built as a single leaf around the concrete structure
Existing Concrete frame is structurally redundant and thus can bear new load
The whole structure is pinned at the top for lateral stability, bolted into the existing concrete frame
Split secondary beams run either side of the column and make use of the existing structure. On the lower level a wooden cuff of simple sawn sections wraps around the portal frame and is bolted through the single leaf of brick to the inner concrete column. On the upper level the wood sits directly on top of the concrete corbel. Tertiary joists sit upon the secondary beams: Rule of Thumb for joists: Joist (depth) = span / 20 = 3150 / 20 = 157.5 >>> This approximates to 150mm x 75mm joist (the lessened depth compensated by the greater width.
The large exterior frame consists of glulam columns
Scatter
bracing at the top of the structure prevents racking
The rhythm of the inserted timber frame coincides with that of the existing concrete portal frame: intervals of 3150mm
The internal frame is made from normal lumber and makes use of the existing structural strength of the building
