The Stuart Island project was located in the San J u a n I s l a n d s n o r t h w e s t o f S e a t t l e , WA . T h e p r o j e c t was detailed to design a cabin integrated into the steep slope with an ocean view to the south while, the northern side is dense with coniferous trees. The challenge was to harmonize structure and a bioclimatic design within the site to allow the building to become one with nature.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN T h e c l i e n t ex p r e s s e d t h e f a c t t h a t t h e y wanted to be integrated within nature while at the cabin. I proposed the design w h e r e a l i n e a r p a t h o f ex t e r i o r c i r c u l a t i o n connects the different zones of the cabin. This symbolizes the idea of a camping site where one must go outside before inside. The three main zones are split between sleeping, bathroom, and living space. This project was located on a corner lot between downtown and the high school in Council Grove, KS. This act of different groups of people coming together created a strong sense of community within the settlers, resulting into the town of Council Grove. This sense of community is carried through by reinterpreting the wagons to a pinwheel form.

All the buildings on main street have strong corner entrances so a reinterpretation of this was made by following the idea of the rounded corners into the form of the main entry point.

The building becomes all about movement to relate to the dancers. Stairs act as the dance from the entrance and follow into the atrium. This becomes the vertical movement for the dancers to progress. The second level is where they practice and the third is perform.
