THE URBAN ZONNING AND RESEARCH AREA

Guangzhou is a city with profound historical and cultural heritage in southern China. Along with the rapidly population increase and development, the new cultural centers of the city have been built as the city landmark rather than a part of public everyday life. Meanwhile, more and more traditional neighborhoods with historical pattern are gradually being swallowed by commercial real estate development.

RESPOND STREET ELEVATION & CONCEPT OF LOOP

Given by this situation, this thesis would explore a way to integrate the community cultural center with the historical context and reduce the destruction of the existing texture by architectural occupancy, and the thesis will propose a new mode of community cultural center which could offer flexible space to meet a variety of common urban cultural activities: exhibitions, lectures, performances, education and so on; in order to become the place where the citizens can easily enjoy the cultural life. Design focuses on maintain the existing texture and active use of the unused space, in order to respond to the history architectures and become a permanent part of neighborhood history.

Design Concept The building embodies multiple stories of the city: the history of the library, the colorful urban life and the performance art. The relationship between these components mirrors that of characters on the stage, as each takes a turn being the center of the scene. The lighting design concept is inspired by stage lighting, which highlights the appropriate character for their time in the spotlight. 10AM-5PM
