EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK ALTITUDE AND DIFFICULTY

To break all these apart, leaving Kathmandu from a n altitude of 1350 metres to Lukla at 2860 metres, the trek starts. Namche Bazaar is an important junction for trekkers as the name ‘’BAZAAR’’ meaning “MARKET’’ itself suggests at 3440 metres. Finally, the height/altitude of Everest Base Camp is 5360 metres from the sea level. Additionally, 5554 metres is the highest point in the whole of the trek at Kala Patthar Viewpoint which is an ideal spot for expeditionists to gaze at the shiny summits and pinnacles in awe.

Secondly, the total distance to be trekked after landing at Lukla Airport is roughly 65 kilometres and the length of the trek almost 12 days. The geography of the terrain is

mostly rocky, steep and patchy and that reduces the speed of the trekkers making even a short distance of 65 kilometres feel like a lot. The distance including the return trip makes it a 130 kilometres over-all trek. So, on average, adventurers will have to walk a distance of 10 kilometres each day. This might not sound like a lot but we are talking about high edged mountains and routes here and the key is consistency and curiosity.

EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK ROUTE

The entirety of the EBC region falls under the Sagarmatha National Park and has diverse climate zones because of the steep ascending. Every area in the national park is above 3000 metres and 3 of the highest peaks in the world are pinned here including the Mount Everest. The Lukla Airport which is considered the most dangerous airport in the world didn’t exist almost 55 years back and there were only two ways to access the route to Everest Base Camp. Either, do a wild trek through the rocky landscapes for a total of 4 weeks or take a long ride on a bus to Jiri and walk for 5 to 8 days to

reach Namche Bazaar and further continue. But that was bound to change shortly after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s victory over the unbreachable top. In 1964, everything changed after Himalayan trust backed up by Sir Edmund Hillary built a mountain-side dirt runway in Lukla to help the Sherpas with the carrying of the goods.

After all these years, the same airport, now renamed Tenzing-Hillary Airport holds a lot of significance to the mountain goers and the local people as well. For now, visitors can either take flights to the same airport, also called Lukla Airport and then start the trek or take a bus route to Phaplu/Salleri after Jiri and hike for 2 days to reach Lukla and then continue the trek like others. For trek fanatics, Namche Bazaar also opens doors to 3 of the high passes in the region namely Renjola Pass, Chola Pass and Kongmala Pass via a place named Thame which ultimately leads to Gokyo Valley.
