The proverbial light at the end of the covid tunnel is getting brighter by the day with vaccine rollouts happening worldwide and at home, and we’re so excited to be able to start planning our next travel adventures. First on our list… road tripping! Nothing beats the thrill of the open road with your clan, whether its your family or friends? Tunes blaring in the car, windows rolled down (yes, even in winter – it’s been a long year!), In the immortal words of Willie Nelson, we “just can’t wait to get on the road again.” It’s time to meet Mzansi like the old friend she is, on these awesome local getaways not far from Jozi.

The Pilanesberg National Park is only around 2 hrs drive from Joburg and is a sought-after wildlife destination in a malaria-free zone. The park is home to the big five and the unique biosphere of the Pilanesberg National Park is home to one of the country’s most famous wildlife areas. This awesome reserve has a dramatic landscape that hosts a wide variety of animals and birds. Accommodation in Pilanesberg ranges from camping sites and caravanning to luxury 4 and 5 star private lodges. Officially the park is the fourth largest National park in South Africa. The location of the park is in an old volcanic crater and makes this one of a kind in South Africa.

Family holidays at Sun City are all about finding your fun in the sun! Catering to all guests, but especially to kids, the Cabanas are the most relaxed family accommodation at Sun City. Explore the grassland plains and rocky outcrops of the reserve in search of the Big Five and fill your days and nights with bush-inspired fun, from quad biking and bird walks to stargazing drives and dam picnics. It’s a magical wildlife experience you’ll never forget.

Mabalingwe is a short drive from Pretoria and offers an excellent choice for a weekend bush break. Relaxed and incredibly family friendly, there are also resort-style activities to keep the kids entertained, such as tennis, a swimming pool, mini golf and kids’ area. Plus, you can opt into your own game drives and stay self-catering, making this an easy and relaxed option for families. The spectacular 9,500 hectare landscape allows you to lose yourself in an authentic South African bushveld with abundant birdlife, stunning indigenous trees and shrubs and a wide variety of wildlife, providing the perfect space for shared quality experiences with your family while having fun.

The small town of Clarens is situated at the foothill of the Maloti Mountains and is approximately 3.5hrs drive from Joburg. It offers beautiful natural surroundings of many things, such as another of its famous mountains, the Rooiberge. Pristine dams, rivers, and streams are ideal for fly fishing and the best Trout fishing spots in South Africa and great water rapids when white water river rafting in the Ash River.

It is also known as an artists’ haven with wellknown artists either living in or frequenting the village and several art galleries scattered around the town. The tranquil village ambience combined with scenic views and a mild climate has made Clarens a popular getaway. The beautiful village is also known for its spectacular sandstone mountains and is said to be one of the most picturesque spots in South Africa. The Golden Gate National park in only around 20minutes from here, so it’s the ideal time to visit or combining your holiday.
