Glossary Efflorescence Efflorescence is the white build up of salts the leech from concrete or other masonry materials containing soluble salts during drying and weathering. Efflorescence may be caused by chemical (presence of carbon dioxide, or sulphurous gases that react with the material) or physical processes (salt solubility, affinity to water, form of salt crystals, the pore structure of the concrete or water movement). The effect of efflorescence can be reduced by controlling the constituents of the concrete and the curing process, treating the surface of the concrete with water-repellent materials, and controlling environmental exposure to moisture if possible.
