My name is Karel.

I am an Architectural Designer in Chicago, Illinois. I am half Panamanian and half Mexican, born and raised in southeastern Michigan. My passion for architecture is deeply anchored in the capacity to craft spaces that authentically conveys Color, Culture, and Individuality. My heritage has significantly shaped my design sensibilities by drawing inspiration from the architectural elements prevalent in these countries. Additionally, I have undertaken a deliberate effort to cultivate proficiency in graphic design and photography. GROUP MEMBERS: XIN LI & YIKAI SU 3RD SEMESTER

This project aims to provide affordable housing and services for families, and individuals looking to live with other people. This site is currently home to the Ann Arbor Housing Commission main office, parking for maintenance vehicles, maintenance department, gas pumps, and charging stations for City EVs.

Our group decided to develop a mixed-use building to bring the community together to one location and draw connections between residence, neighborhood, and environment. The building has a total of 7 stories, with the ground floor being commercial and office space. Floors 2-7 are all residential. Our ground floor programming includes a Convenience store, a food bank, mail service, a restaurant, a gym, and a study lounge. We hope to connect residents to the natural environment by providing different scales of outdoor space within the building, while at the same time providing livable and spacious homes for our residents

ARTIST HOUSING

YPSILANTI, MI INDIVIDUAL PROJECT 2ND SEMESTER

Downtown Ypsilanti lacks business and life. But, one thing it does have, is a huge artistic community in and around downtown. Downtown Ypsi has a couple restaurants and cafes but the other businesses are either dedicated to art or support art/artists. There is no housing in downtown Ypsi, especially for locally based artists. Artists in the area rent or makeshift their own work spaces, when in reality they need somewhere close to home to be able to work on their art and succeed. Taking into consideration the lonely downtown, the many artists and artistic businesses in the area, as well as the need for housing, this project is a proposal for a MixedUse Housing complex in the heart of downtown. This project is dedicated to provide artists with flexible live/ work apartments where they can grow creatively, while at the same time providing Downtown with necessary small businesses and community activities to convert Ypsilanti into an important artistic hub for the surrounding community. This building will turn Ypsilanti into an Art Campus.

15x15’ = 225sqft squares are used to create these units. No unit is bigger than 900sqft. And they are either I-shaped or L-shaped. Each unit has a double

height ceiling because some art might need space to grow. Units get one 225sqft square room as the second floor of their apartment the rest is open to below.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT 1ST SEMESTER

This building is an extension of the Ann Arbor District Library: Downtown Branch. When thinking about how my extension to the AADL could go beyond books, I chose to design an Image education and production center To make a library complete, I believe it is important to not only house books and other written materials, but to house images, be able to teach about images and provide the community the possibility of producing their own. This building provides Ann Arbor and its surrounding areas with a space to learn how to do all types of printmaking, photography, videography, and VR Imaging. This building is split into 3 squares to represent the 3 types of imaging within. The west and smallest square is purposed for producing still images, the east and largest square houses a classroom, and programs involving moving images. The middle square is the connective tissue of this building, it houses the computer lab and visualization studio, workspace, and storage.

THE WATERING HOLE

This project is the renovation of an existing bar inside a Great Wolf Lodge indoor waterpark in Wisconsin Dells. The Watering Hole is GWL’s bar brand and has been previously built in other lodges. However, the client wanted a new, spacious, modern approach to the previous design. In order to fulfull the clients wishes we designed the bar to look like a small lodge itself. The entire bar is cladded in Western Cedar wood in various brand colors, new technology and equipment were installed, all encapsulated by a cabin-like canopy above. The previous version of the bar saw little to no customers daily because it’s hidden in a corner behind a wall, which never allowed people to see it from the indoor waterpark area. In order to improve the flow of customers we opened a hole in the wall that “enclosed” the bar. I designed and drafted the entirety of this project under the supervision of my managers, as well as reviewed the construction process. The project is complete and bringing in 3 times the revenue it was making before.

This is a new construction of a 4 story multipurpose building. The client is the owner of various daycares called “Tiny Giants Early Learning Center” throughout the north side of Chicago. They are expanding by constructing a new school on the ground floor, their headquater offices and staff lounge on the second floor, and 2 stories of large family oreinted apartments above.

The site is on the corner of a busy main intersection and across the street from a large park in the Irving Park nehgborhood of Chicago. This neighborhood is very walkable and home to many young families, making it the perfect site for a new daycare and large residences. SEEK was contracted to design all Architecture and Interiors for this building. The project is set to break ground late 2024. All plans and renderings are still under design development.

PURSUIT PROJECT: SITE MODEL MILWAUKEE, WI

INTERNSHIP AT WITH : HAOXUAN YAN SUPERVISOR: BRIAN BASSETT SUMMER 2022

The firm had decided to partake in a competition to design and build an addition to Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. For the presentation to the client, we were tasked to build a site model of the entire Hospital campus . It had to include; Topography, surrounding buildings, model in detail previous buildings the firm designed, and add an insert where the massing proposal models could be swapped out easily during the presentation. Massing Models are seen in Acrylic.

Materials Used: 1/16” Task-board, 0.03 Polystyrene, 3D Printing, Clear 1/8” Acrylic

I aim to produce captivating imagery of the places I’ve traveled to as well as experiment with people and surroundings. The world is full of so many vibrant colors, why not highlight those? Each image is edited carefully in order to not lose the mood or message of the original photo. I use my Nikon D3400 to capture all these photos, however I have learned that the important thing isn’t the camera it is the eye.
