KAREL VENEGAS-CABRERA

My name is Karel Venegas-Cabrera, and I am a 1st year Masters of Architecture student at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor I am a first generation American. My father is Mexican and my mother is Panamanian. My interest in Architecture is driven by my passion for creating spaces that interact with the users in a personal and social level rather than just being a physical structure. My works are inspired by the buildings I have seen when traveling the globe. This portfolio showcases my undergraduate works, sketches as well as some of my favorite works of photography.

Prosperity Gardens Inc. is a Non-Profit organization located at 302 N. First St, Champaign, IL. It was created to provide hands-on garden-based education and green business employment opportunities. The organization also offers affordable, locally grown produce for the Champaign-Urbana area. Its urban gardening programming is currently centered on two city-owned lots, the one on N. First St and the other on a 1-acre lot on E. North St between Champaign St and N. Walnut St. Prosperity Gardens’ current employees are mostly homeless people working to start a better life and learn new skills that will help them get back on their feet. The creation of the Tiny Home Farming Neighborhood stems off of that idea of helping these currently homeless people get back on their feet.

This was a unique studio experience because my classmates and I, got to work with a real client, Nicole, and tend to her wants/needs for her company. We also worked with architects and engineers from The Farnsworth Group, they taught us about the mechanical & structural side this building needs and they also gave us advice on what materials would be best and cheap to use for the exterior. She specifically wanted a commercial kitchen and a “community space” for team meetings and to host resume/career workshops for her employees as well as storage space for her employees and tools. Even though as a class we analyzed and responded to this building, we each created our own floor plan and exterior remodel.

The Theory of “Prospect and Refuge” seeks to describe why certain environments feel secure and thereby meet basic human psychological needs. Environments that meet such need will often provide people with the capacity to Observe (prospect)without being seen (refuge). “Prospect and Refuge is Located in Allerton Park in Monticello, IL, on any plot of land that is 72’x72’, no bigger than 500 square feet.
