CONSTRUCTION The construction and demolition phases of a turbine’s life are the most challenging for those working within it, as in many cases the installed fall protection systems are not fully available. Rapid assembly methods and ever-larger crane capacities allow turbine construction to proceed with increasing efficiency, but workers remain exposed to fall hazards, both on the turbine itself and when accessing components at ground level. Our ranges of PPE and anchor systems ensure the best possible protection in all these situations.

OPERATION & MAINTENANCE Routine repair and servicing of the complex mechanisms within a turbine mean frequent access to the tower and nacelle, and regular entry into the hub. As turbines become ever larger, workers are exposed to greater work at height risks and so require the very best anchorages and personal equipment, to deliver a comprehensive, effective and reliable fall protection system in these extremely challenging environments.

Miller provides a complete range of products, from anchor devices and ladder fall arrest systems to harnesses and lanyards. Whether you are climbing fixed ladders or inspecting blades with rope access, your safety and comfort is always our top priority.

RESCUE & EVACUATION Wind turbines are multi-hazard environments, usually in remote locations; and while accidents and emergencies are rare, workers must be given the best possible training, equipment and support to allow them to safely and efficiently evacuate from the tower or nacelle, and to perform a rescue of a colleague who may be incapacitated or suspended after a fall. Miller’s range of purpose-designed rescue equipment, anchor devices and PPE ensures your legal compliance in the most costeffective and globally-compatible ways, for total peace of mind.

The selection of correct anchor points is vital, as not only must they be of suitable strength and designed for loads in the applied directions, but they must be located where they can protect the user from injury, minimize fall distances, and yet permit efficient and free movement. The Miller product range has a complete portfolio of permanent and temporary devices, from eyebolts for single fixing, slings and beam clamps, to horizontal wire and rail systems for protecting users on nacelle rooftops.

Choosing a harness can be the most important aspect to the user, as the combination of features, style and fit are essential to reduce stress and maximise comfort when climbing and working in the restricted environments of wind turbines. Miller provides a range of dedicated wind energy harnesses for the onshore and offshore markets that incorporate features specific to these demanding workplaces, as well as rope access, confined space and basic fall arrest models.

CONNECTION AND DECELERATION DEVICE There are many choices for the connection from your harness to the anchor point, but the selection must be made with care, to ensure the user is protected at all times and retains freedom to move. The law requires that work restraint systems should be used in preference, and that fall arrest systems should minimise both the consequences and distance of any fall. When correctly-positioned anchor systems are combined with the most appropriate connection device, workers can be fullyprotected without impeding their access to the turbine, or creating hazards from entanglement.

EVACUATION DEVICE A system to allow an injured or entrapped worker to safely escape from height, and a vital legal requirement for all wind turbines to provide a means of escape in the event of a fire. Typically an evacuation/rescue kit is located in every turbine nacelle, and should be selected to match the tower height so that multiple users can descend in rapid succession.

Fixed-rate descenders such as the Miller SafEscape™ ELITE allow the user to descend hands-free at a controlled speed, and are the standard type of device for wind turbines across the world. When fitted with a lifting hub, these devices can be used for rescue of a colleague from suspension or extraction from the hub. Typically the rescue version will be stored in the wind farm substation or carried by the technician, in the form of a self-contained kit containing the device, anchor slings, brackets, pulleys, connectors and remote-reach equipment.

Evacuation and rescue equipment is not classified as PPE under European law, and is for emergency use only. When suitably packaged in a protective case, the system can remain sealed for several years and will be ready to deploy whenever needed.

HORIZONTAL ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS EN795-D APPROVED RAIL SYSTEMS Access onto the roof of the nacelle is a routine task, and the exposed position is difficult to protect using conventional methods such as guard-rails, and using fall arrest must be avoided if possible due to the consequences of a fall over the edge, and subsequent need for rapid rescue. By fitting approved EN795-D anchor rails around the edges or along the centre line, workers can operate in restraint while freely accessing all areas of the rooftop. Forces are distributed across multiple fixing points, reducing the need for reinforcement of the nacelle skin. In the unlikely event of an emergency, these rails are the ideal anchor point for rescue and descent equipment. Their low profile and corrosionresistant materials ensure decades of trouble-free service and keep them invisible from ground level.

CONNECTION DEVICES FALL ARREST LANYARDS The most common connection between a user’s harness and the anchorage point will be a fall arrest lanyard. These are available in a wide range of designs, from rope and webbing based products to stretchable Manyards and self-retracting models; however they all serve to safely limit the peak force experienced by a falling worker to below 6kN (600kgf), by means of an energy absorber. Fall arrest lanyards must be replaced if the absorber is activated, even partially. On wind turbines, lanyards with large double-action scaffold hooks are most popular, as they can connect to structural anchorages and around ladder stiles. A twin-tail product is used to allow the worker to remain 100% attached as they move from point to point: when using two single-tail lanyards they must never be anchored in a way that would share the energy of the fall simultaneously between them.

FALL FACTORS

Factor one

Factor two

During a fall, a person’s mass generates energy in relation to the distance travelled. The ratio of the total distance fallen to the length of the connection is called the fall factor, and should me minimized as much as possible by selecting the correct lanyard and highest anchorage point:

Factor zero

EDGE TESTED PRODUCTS Many falls will occur over an edge, placing extreme stresses on the material of the lanyard and potentially leading to failure. The current EN standards (EN354 and EN355) do not allow for this type of incident, so if an edge fall is possible in your workplace it is essential that you select a device with specific edge test approval from the manufacturer. Miller provides a range of these products, shown by this yellow symbol.

CONNECTION DEVICES RETRACTABLE TYPE FALL ARRESTERS Whenever users need freedom of movement combined with the shortest possible fall distance1, Miller EN360 retractable type fall arresters are the ideal solution:

t 0O WFSUJDBM MBEEFST when installed wire or rail systems are not available t On platforms when working near open edges, with the device anchored above t On nacelle rooftops using devices approved for horizontal deployment Each device contains a self-retracting reel of steel cable or webbing, which will automatically feed in and out as the worker moves. In the event of a fall, a quick-activating braking system locks the reel and arrests the fall within a very short distance. Inbuilt energy absorbers protect the user from excess forces.

RESTRAINT AND POSITIONING

; EN : CSA

: ANSI/OSHA : AS/NSZ

: ANSI/OSHA : AS/NSZ

Restraint and Positioning Lanyards The law requires that work restraint systems should be used in preference to fall arrest, as by definition they eliminate any possibility of a fall occurring. Although impossible on ladders, restraint systems are the perfect solution for access onto the roof of the nacelle and when working on platforms with exposed edges or open trapdoors. Work positioning systems wholly or partially support the weight of the user, allowing hands-free work with confidence. An adjustable polestrap connects between the lateral D-rings on a full body harness and is an essential tool when performing many rescues and maintenance operations within the tower. They can also be used for restraint.

*This is an emergency product only and must be serviced after use. It is not an item of rope access or fall protection PPE.

To control speed and lock off the descent, the rope can be passed over a friction pigtail and placed between locking cams.

This is faster than conventional abseil equipment, and ensures the most efficient evacuation of multiple workers from modern multi-megawatt turbines, both onshore and offshore.

The rope passes around a grooved pulley, linked to a highspeed shaft. Centrifugal brakes on this shaft are forced apart as they spin, slowing the descent automatically and giving a fixed and safe maximum speed independent of the applied load.
