We could very well see the re-registration of the Shikoku which is recognised by the FCI as the ANKC is arranging the Shikoku to be added to the National business system.

The Shikoku will be found in the utility group (Group 6).

That’s some of the interesting developments and news around the dog world.

Great Cattle Dog Muster

The Great Cattle Dog Muster is a three-day event staged in September 2021 (10/11/12) by the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry and supported by the Australian Cattle Dog Society of NSW Inc.

The event is the first of its kind in Australia. It is expected to draw visitors from across the region, throughout NSW, and around Australia.

With the Upper Hunter being the birthplace of the Cattle Dog, this makes the region an ideal location and drawcard for cattle dog breeders, exhibitors, enthusiasts, and pet owners.

This event will become an annual signature event for Muswellbrook and the region and bring excellent opportunities to showcase all that the Upper Hunter offers. The three-day event combines activities that cater to the serious cattle dog enthusiast, the pet cattle dog owner, and the general public. With a country Vibe, festival feel, and family open day, the event expects more than 8000 visitors.

Saturday 11 September is the first of the Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog breed conformation events starting at 10.00am with the Sweepstakes and property classes. 3 to 6 months Sweepstakes 6 to 9 months Sweepstakes 9 to 12 months Sweepstakes 12 to 18 months Sweepstakes and Grand Sweepstakes winner.

Property Classes Breeders group (four dogs carrying the same kennel name prefix) Parent and Offspring (two dogs) Veteran 7 to 10 years Veteran over 10 years Best Gaited, Headed, Footed, Coated, and Best Red Colour.

The Muster Committee is delighted to introduce our three very experienced Working Group judges.

Sweepstakes and Property class judge Mrs. Donna Puttock from Bungendore NSW.

Donna has trained dogs all her life, with a strong interest in

animal behaviour from a very young age. Her personal dogs have worked on movies, television commercials, performed in front of live audiences, and competed in many different dog sports.

As a professional scent dog handler for several years (Australian Government), and a few years in the horse industry (dressage) Donna, is involved with many aspects of the dog world, covering both working dogs and conformation. Donna, who has a Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing (Deakin University), is a published writer of all things canine in Australia and Internationally.

Donna has been involved with pedigree dogs since 1992, showing her Alaskan Malamutes, Golden Retriever, and since 2004 Australian Shepherds. Donna has also helped others assess and campaign many other breeds to their titles. Passionate about her breed, the Australian Shepherd, Donna has experienced a great deal of success at all levels of competition, including having imported, shown, and bred Multi Best in Show and Best in Specialty show winners, as well as winning Best in Show 2 at the prestigious Sydney Royal in 2016. While Donna commenced her breeding with Alaskan Malamutes in 1994, her love for the Australian Shepherd took over in 2004. Importing her Australian Shepherd foundation stock from the top kennels in the USA, Donna considers breed type and consistency in style and balanced movement, and excellent workability and performance as paramount. Donna’s limited breeding program, which aims for quality and not quantity, reflects this ethos.

Commencing her judging career in 2005, Donna gained her Utility Group Licence and Working Dog Group in 2008. Donna has had experience judging both in Australia and overseas and very much enjoys the honour of being invited to judge and the pleasure of awarding well-conformed, balanced, and sound exhibits that display all the requirements of form and function for their breed. In giving back to the world of Dogs, Donna is actively involved across many disciplines for many years and, more recently, has been promoting and supporting the new sport of ANKC Scent work. She has titled multiple dogs in formal Obedience, Working Pack, Endurance, and Rally Obedience. Donna’s firm belief that the more we can do with our dogs, the better life is for humans and their canine companions. Donna is hugely passionate about breeding, exhibiting, and judging dogs and promoting purebred dogs and dog sports. She feels extremely privileged to be invited to officiate over the Sweepstakes and Property classes at the 2021 Australian Cattle Dog Muster and is very thankful for this honour. Following on from our Sweepstakes and Property classes will be the first of the breed championship shows for Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs judged by well-known Veterinary Surgeon, radio, and TV personality Dr. Rob Zammit BVSc.

Dogs, the very word, describes Dr. Rob’s life. Dogs as a child helped him through the trials and tribulations of youth; his hobby, well it was dogs: - obedience, showing, agility; professionally, as a veterinary student, he knew he would work in a dog-based practice; his most beloved possession in life, his wife Fiona, well they met because of dogs. Their children, of course, have their own dogs. Having worked in veterinary practice for over fifty years, Rob still loves his work, and his passion for dogs spurs him on.

As a veterinary student, Rob fell more in love with working dogs, finding them on every farm he was required to attend. Rob has been a licensed ANKC judge of the Working group for approx. 40 years. So, what is essential to Dr. Rob when judging dogs? Temperament. Not necessarily over-friendly, especially in an Australian Cattle Dog, but the correct character defined by the breed’s work. Movement. Every dog has its own anatomy. Every breed requires a specific gait that typifies that breed and allows it to complete its duties. And this is most true in working dogs. Breed type. That a dog must pertain to a specific breed standard, ensuring the dog’s function is bred for can be carried out by that animal. For example, the correct development of the under jaw is essential for a cattle dog. And to have a properly developed mandible with correct bite compels the dog to have a strong muzzle and logically a strong skull with correct stop. Every component in a dog’s anatomy is connected to another area, so it must come together in a cohesive and balanced combination.

Human civilization accelerated once dogs worked with us to keep sheep, goats, cattle, and many other animals (even reindeer). Every nation on earth owes so much to canines. Australia most certainly, having developed the best sheep and cattle industry in the world, owes a tremendous debt to its working dogs; therefore, it is with absolute pride that Dr. Rob accepts the judging appointment to assist in Australia’s inaugural Great Cattle Dog Muster.

The second of the championship shows for Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs will be judged by Victorian judge Mrs. Lyn Watson. Lyn became a member of Kennel Control Council of Vic. in 1959 with their first show dog, a Pekingese. Bred one litter under Lingsun prefix and the mentorship of Gladys Pateman before transferring passion to the Afghan Hound, founding the
