The Importance of Safety In today’s world, information is everything. With over 35 million server rooms worldwide, data and data storage is essential for business. A server room provides the operational and environmental components and services to operate enterprise class servers. These servers contribute to the daily operations of the modern organization. The protection of server rooms against fire is especially important, as the loss of business critical data could prove disastrous. Fire Eater have been successfully protecting server rooms for many years. A Fire Eater INERGEN® system works by reducing oxygen levels. This reduction in oxygen within the protected area means that a fire can neither survive nor reignite. The gas is distributed via pipework installed in ceilings or under raised floors ensuring that it is dispersed evenly throughout the area being protected. The 3D extinguishing effects of INERGEN® means that even “hidden” fires are quickly and effectively extinguished, leaving little or no clean up after the event.
The Challenge In recent years, issues have been reporting related to damaged hard disc drives (HDD) during fire suppression system discharge. When a system is discharged the gas moves at high velocity through pipe networks. When the gas exits through multiple nozzles within the server room, high level acoustic noise is generated. Upon reaching the HDDs the acoustic level causes vibration, which in turn, can cause damage.
Fire Eater FSN Silencer Fire Eater developed the FSN Silencer which minimizes noise and turbulence during system discharge. Specifically designed to work with the Fire Eater INERGEN® system, the FSN Silencer, combined with a longer flow time, ensures that INERGEN® passes through the nozzle at a lower pressure resulting in a significant reduction in noise and turbulence.
Tests and Accreditations There are currently no technical standards relating to noise reduction however, Fire Eater’s extensive hard drive research and rigorous testing have shown that noise levels in excess of 120-130dB may reduce and influence the data transfer rate and overall performance of HDDs. Activation of a Fire Suppression system not equipped with Fire Eater’s FSN Silencer technology is more likely to suffer HDD damage.* At Fire Eater we believe that your investment deserves the best fire protection.
