PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM VALLEY YMCA | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
ACHIEVING TOGETHER Independence Blue Cross and the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA share a deep history and commitment to the region. In 2012, a true partnership between the two organizations was forged and with that a responsibility for the well-being of the communities we both serve. Over the past three years, Independence has sponsored our Healthy Living activities such as SPLASH Week, Healthy Kids Day®, numerous branch 5k runs and so much more. Independence has also played a vital role in helping to ensure that the individuals and families who belong to the Y and live in communities surrounding our Ys have access to the health insurance they need. We have welcomed their mobile healthcare reform education and enrollment vehicle – The Independence Express – at our various branches. The friendly, knowledgeable experts who staffed The Independence Express helped thousands, even some who never had health insurance before. We are proud of our partnership with Independence and excited to announce that we will continue to work together through 2017. We are grateful for the volunteer leadership of Christopher Cashman, Executive Vice President and President, Commercial Markets at Independence who continues to serve on the Board of Directors, Chairs our Annual Campaign and serves on numerous subcommittees. Over the next three years, Independence will continue to support the Y’s mission by sponsoring our Healthy Living pillar of focus as well as participating in wellness activities at our local branches. We are thankful an organization like Independence recognizes the great work of the Y in addressing community needs. Healthy Living Programs Sponsored By

Participating in gymnastics at the YMCA has given Carlie the confidence to branch out into many other sports including ice skating, aquatics and rock climbing.

Dana considers the day she met some “ I have seen and experienced people at a training course - who also happened to work at the YMCA - as the day everything changed. Dana was going through some rough times personally, and the YMCA employees helped her get a membership at the Phoenixville Y. Her family membership has allowed her to spend quality time with her daughter swimming together and even volunteering at YMCA events! This past January, Dana made a resolution to get fit and lose some weight. She walked up to the front desk and said, “please help me.” The Y team signed Dana up for the 12-Week Weight Loss Experience and set her up for a free consultation.

Camp
Speers has been part of 17year old Ethan’s life for almost a decade. As a day and overnight camper, and, most recently, a Counselor In Training, the Shohola, PA resident has acquired enduring skills and values while making lasting friendships. Among his “Y Camp Family,” he’s known for having a strong sense of responsibility and community engagement—and not just when camp is in session. When Ethan has time during the school year, he volunteers at Camp Speers, always arriving with a smile and eager to help split firewood, fix a plumbing leak, move supplies or tackle whatever needs doing to get camp ready for campers.

Ethan’s response: “I’ve already been paid—I’ve been able to come to Camp all these years. Camp has helped shape me in so many ways and has made me want to make the world a better place. Y Achievers is our premiere academic achievement, youth development program for students in grades Y Achievers Program 5 through 12. This mentoring program helps guide tweens and teens with the tools and information necessary to get into college, graduate and achieve their career goals.
PLANNING
FOR THE FUTURE
This is the 8th year Comcast has sponsored the Y Achievers program. Over 1000 youth participated in the 2013-2014 program. We are thankful for their continued support of this invaluable program’s pursuit of higher education for our youth. Sponsored By:
The Y Achievers Annual College Tour is a staple of the Y Achievers program. Each year approximiately 50 High School sophomores and juniors travel on a coach bus to campuses up and down the Eastern seaboard. For many of our students, it’s an opportunity to explore and experience the reality of college life for the first time. For those students thinking of staying close to home, we also offer local college tours.
“It’s an amazing program because of the
genuine support and care. My son, Jacqua, went on the college tour; his first time touring colleges. He loved it. Called me everyday. It increased his appetite to attend. Because of Y Achievers and the Y’s Financial Assistance program, he was able to attend. Thank you.” - Barbara Gardner, Parent
In 2014 we debuted our first Global Service Learning Experience with a trip to Colombia, South America for seven high school Achievers. While there, the students engaged in cultural exchange presentations with the Y of Pereira’s enthusiastic volunteers and community partners. They also took part in community service projects. 11 PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM VALLEY | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM VALLEY YMCAYMCA | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
