Accident, Maryland, USA Accident is a town in Garrett County, Maryland, United States. The population was 353 at the 2000 census. The town is home to Northern Garrett High School. According to the book Labels for Locals by Paul Dickson, a person from Accident is called an “Accidental”. Accident, Garrett County, Maryland was one of the early settlements in the far west of Maryland. Mary Strauss explains the origin of the name: ‘How did this spot get the name Accident? To this very day it remains a mystery. There are numerous stories advocating the name’s origin, but the following is probably the most nearly correct story of the “accident”. At least it checks with the land records. In 1774 Lord Baltimore, Proprietor of the Maryland Colony, opened his lands “westward of Fort Cumberland” for settlement. Among the speculators who hastened to western Maryland with their surveyors to
secure choice tracts of land were Brooke Beall and William Deakins, Jr., both of Prince George’s County. William Deakins and his brother Francis had warrants for several tracts, and on April 14, 1774, they surveyed a fine tract of 682 acres between the branches of Bear Creek, including an old Indian camp ground on the trail to Braddock’s Road. But when the survey was completed, Brooke Beall and his party appeared on the scene and Beall claimed that he had selected the same tract for his survey, calling attention to his axe marks on the trees to prove his claim. Deakins replied that it appeared that they had selected the same land “by accident”. Since he and Beall were friends and land was abundant, he proposed that Beall take over the survey already made. To this Beall agreed, although his warrant called for 778 acres. John Hanson, Jr., Deputy County Surveyor, made out the survey to Beall, and they named the tract Accident.’ image 1: Accident, 1910, Western Maryland Regional Library image 2: Accident, 2012, Google streetview

Dead Woman crossing, Oklahoma, USA Dead Women Crossing is a small community on Deer Creek near Weatherford in Custer County, Oklahoma, United States, at elevation 1,509 feet. Dead Women Crossing is reputed to be haunted. Susan Woolf Brenner, a university student from Weatherford, investigated the origin of the name Dead Women Crossing. Her report, Dead Woman’s Crossing: The Legacy of a Territorial Murder, was published in Chronicles of Oklahoma, Volume 60 in 1982. Michael Norman and Beth Scott describe Brenner’s findings in their book Haunted Heritage. On July 6, 1905, a schoolteacher named Katie DeWitt James filed for divorce. The next day, she carried her 14-month old daughter Lulu Belle to a train station in Custer City. Katie was going to visit with her cousin who lived in Ripley. Her father Henry DeWitt came to bid farewell; her husband Martin James did not come to the station. A few weeks later, Henry became concerned that he had not heard from his daughter. He contacted a sheriff, who suggested hiring a detective named Sam
Bartell. Bartell started his investigation from Clinton, but nobody remembered seeing a woman and a baby there. Then on July 28, 1905 in Weatherford Bartell learned that Katie and the baby spent a night in the house of William Moore. They were brought to this house by Moore’s sister-in-law Fannie Norton, a resident of Clinton who also was known as Mrs. Ham, and reputed to be a prostitute. In the morning Norton, Katie and the baby left in a buggy; Norton returned alone two hours later. Then Norton went back to Clinton. Later Bartell found out that two women and the baby were seen around Deer Creek. The detective also was able to find the baby. The witness testified that Norton left the baby with a boy, and asked him to take the baby home. The baby was unharmed, but her clothing was covered with blood. While locals searched for Katie, Bartell tracked down Norton, who denied she murdered Katie. Later that day Norton committed suicide by poison. On August 31, 1905, Katie’s remains were found near Deer Creek, about twenty miles east of Clinton. Her head was severed from her body. Katie’s father confirmed these were remains of his daughter.
Many questions about the murder went unanswered. Did Katie and Norton meet on the train by chance, or had Norton sought out Katie? Was Norton somehow involved with Katie’s estranged husband, and if so what was his role in the murder? Katie’s husband had a strong alibi for the time of her disappearance, but he did not take a part in her search, and showed no interest in finding her. Why were Katie’s remains not found for two months? The area was extensively searched. Did somebody move Katie’s body later, and if so, who did it? The only suspect in the case, Fannie Norton, was long dead by that time. Why did Katie leave the train at Clinton, rather than continuing to Ripley as
planned? What did a schoolteacher find in common with a prostitute? When Susan Woolf Brenner went to Deer Creek during her research, she saw a blue light with no particular shape that originated in the creek, and was coming towards her friend and her. Some people claim they have heard a woman crying for her baby around this place. image: Dead woman crossing, 2012, Google streetview

Nothing, Arizona, USA
Nothing was a small unincorporated settlement in far eastern Mohave County, Arizona, United States with four inhabitants. The locals told travelers it “got named by a bunch of drunks.” The settlement was established in 1977, located 100 miles northwest of Phoenix Arizona, and roughly 20 miles south of Wikieup, the “rattlesnake capital of Arizona.”It is west of Bagdad at milepost 148½ on U.S. Route 93 (the Joshua Forest Scenic Parkway) between Wickenburg and Kingman, on the route from Las Vegas to Phoenix. The Arizona Department of Transportation installed one of four motorist callboxes on U.S. 93 at Nothing. The town sign read: “Town of Nothing Arizona. Founded 1977. Elevation 3269ft. The staunch citizens of Nothing are full of Hope, Faith, and Believe in the work ethic. Thru-the-years-these dedicated people had faith in Nothing, hoped for Nothing, worked at Nothing, for Nothing.”
The entire population ran a gas stop and garage. The gas station had a flat bed truck selling rocks and minerals found nearby as local souvenirs. Behind the gas station, down the embankment, was a small scrap heap. Nothing was abandoned by May 2005, and by August 2008, the gas station was beginning to collapse. An attempted revival of Nothing occurred at some time after August 2008 when Nothing was purchased by Mike Jensen. By April 2009, Jensen had opened his pizza business, run from a portable oven, with hopes of reopening the mini-mart and creating accommodations for RVs. As of April 2011 it appears that Nothing has once again been abandoned. The building has fresh boards in the windows, and no sign of inhabitance or being open. image1: Nothing, http://azfoo.net/places/spots/az/nothing/ image2: Nothing, http://forums.ghosttowns.com/showthread.php?18603Nothing-Az

Zap, North Dakota, USA
Zap was settled in 1913 as the last town that year on a Northern Pacific spur line from Mandan, North Dakota. The locals told travelers it “got named by A railroad company official (Mr. Pettibone) in charge of naming the new villages, named the community Zap. He chose Zap because there was a coal mine at the edge of town and Mr. Pettibone knew a coal-mining town in Scotland called Zapp. He chose to Americanize the name and spelled it with only one “p”. There are other myths about the naming of our town, but this is most likely the true story. Zap is probably most widely known for the Zip to Zap which happened on May 10, 1969. This event took place at the height of civil unrest over racial segregation and the Vietnam War, but was originally intended as a spring break diversion.
Between 2000 and 3000 people descended upon the small town of Zap as a result of an article that originally appeared in the North Dakota State University’s Spectrum newspaper and was later picked up by the Associated Press. As the resources of the small country town were depleted, the amiable revelry began to turn ugly, and the residents of Zap asked the visitors to leave. Some of them complied, but others stayed behind, and the event became a full-fledged riot. The National Guard was called in and the crowd was dispersed image1: Zap, 2012, Google streetview image2: Happy, 2012, http://www.flickr.com/photos/afiler/3547780915
