POROSITY Design VI - Spring 2018 Professor Birdsong Austin, Texas Design Excellence Nomination

West Mall Office Building was previously a rigid, impermeable structure that did not adequately meet the needs of the School of Architecture. The building needed to be updated to allow for better circulation, ventilation, and organization of program. Porosity aims to accomplish this by introducing four punctures through the building, each of which has its own goal of accomodating one of the aforementioned inconveniences. The north punctures organizes program around itself, creating an opening above the materials lab north entrance and a fourth floor office lobby.

The east puncture focuses on bringing air through the building, ventilating the side of WMOB that is squeezed up against Battle Hall. It also organizes program around it through creating another lobby space in the basement for added technology resources. The south puncture aims to organize program within itself, changing in size as it climbs through the building. The West puncture brings people through the building vertically and introduces a grand staircase from the main entrane connecting all of the floors and allowing continuous circulation. Overall, porosity aims at bringing interest and convenience into WMOB while organizes spaces for greater functionality.

SHADOW STUDY Design VI - Spring 2018 Professor Birdsong Austin, Texas

To begin our precedent case studies for the studio, we designed three structures that were to play on the effects of light and shadow. My project focused on the effects of shadow in a space, and how smaller angled arpertures would bleed light into the darkest corners of a space. A series of shade and shadow drawings were completed from the concrete models to understand the rays of visible light, and areas of darkness. These precedent studies led us to understand the monolithic nature of West Mall Office Building and helped guide my design in creating porous light wells.

Continuing our analysis, we looked at a series of houses that used light as a means of directing program, circulation and organizing space. The Wall House, by John Hejduk, was my specific focus. It formally used shadow, through the built environment to create a threshold of circulation and living space. We developed an acrylic glass model of the house to utilize it as vestige of light, allowing light ot pass through it in an unconventional way. A series of cyanotype negative photographs were taken in the sunlight using these glass models.

HUB Design V - Fall 2017 Professor Garrison Guelph, Ontario Lyceum Fellowship Competition

Hub is a project aimed at developing a gathering point for the city of Guelph. Expanding the city’s reach at a world-wide scale, Hub introduces a local economy for a global population through the integration of modern vertical farming and market hall spaces. The increasing migration of refugees, has an affect on how to integrate the new members of society into a foreign country. The model of this project is the base of an ecofriendly, social experiment that could be adapted to societies all across the world. Vertical farming, as a proponent of the building’s stuctural

and programmatic design, allows for an economic push towards the sale and production goods all at the same location. This will not only reduce the carbon foot-print, but push for the sale of organic ‘farm-to-table’ ingredients. Refugees arriving from all over can take part in the farming and selling to begin their careers and start their lives in Guelph. Transportation by rail, car, bus and foot are all supported on the site. Restaurants and other amentities are mixed into the market to create a unqiue experience for the consumer to browse, buy, and eat.

LOUVRE STUDY Construction IV - 2017 Professor Fajkus Paris, France

In our construction class we were asked to do immense research and reconstruct an existing buildings outdoor wall threshold. The idea of this structural case study was to understand the components of how complex systems are assembled. I decided to do an in depth study of the Louvre, I.M. Pei, glass pyramid. The glass structure intrigued me, trying to understand how it was structural stable and withstood all the climatic and physical elements. Through my research I was not able to find a detailed wall section of the project and had to reconstruct the pyramid piece by piece, based on interviews and engineering articles.

The wall section on the right shows all of the various components that went into not only designing the pyramid, but ensuring its stability. An interesting piece of the pyramid is the use of the ‘Nitronic 50 rod,’ typically used in yacht construction. The innovative solution to solving the structural issues of the Louvre pyramid is what makes this piece of architecture a worldwide phenomenon. The section is showing the connection of the pyramid to the base of the Louvre entrance plaza, but not the ground, because of the hollow nature of the circulation plaza below.

KULLE Design V - Fall 2017 Professor Garrison Barton Springs, Texas

The Barton Springs Creek is located at the heart of downtown Austin. An oasis in the middle of the fastest growing city, asked for the devleopment of a thermal bath and spa retreat. The existing site had an elaborate hilly landscape which called for a level of respect of the nature around. This project is designed with the existing trees and hill condition in mind, bringing the customer through the spa completely enveloped by the natural landscape, with views of Barton creek from every angle in the building.

The spa includes a stepped thermal bath, starting from the hottest and progressing down towards the creek, which is the coldest. Instead of carving into the hill, we utilized the steepness to create varying spacial depths and a means of applying wood decking to all of the outdoor surfaces for maximum permeable coverage. The orientation of the project is situated facing South to bring in the most natural sunlight, and faces the creek for maximum wind flow and ventilation. With: Jorge Diaz & Sameer Kanafani

CORRIDOR Design IV - Spring 2017 Professor Gamble Austin, Texas

The 53rd street corridor is an entirely disjointed avenue with several nodes of culinary, historic, and artistic interests. The idea behind this urban design scheme was to emphasize these nodes by enhancing their development and creating an ease of connection along the entire corridor. Our group created a design strategy to visually connect the various structures through a series of elevated green spaces. We encouraged movement along the corridor by means of integrating set of districts, and local transportation options that allowed ease of circulation.

Corridor focused on bringing the pedestrian back to the street through decreasing the prominence of the automobile. An experiential map was created to explore the ephemeral attributes of the corridor as I walked along it, to understand the harshness of it’s pedestrian accessibility. After our group analysis we individually developed solutions to the pedestrian issues along the cooridor. A series of greenspaces, once again, were created to draw interest into the site and create a sense of community through an outdoor gathering space. With: Diego Florencia & Reuben Joseph

ABOVE / BELOW Advanced Design - Fall 2017 Professor Siddiqui Paris Studio Abroad Program

The Paris abroad studio challenged us to work in a foreign environment to try and understand the conditions between the peripherique, Pantin, and inner city Paris. The site we were given was interesteced by the peripherique, a huge piece of infrastructure, and it was the challenge to join the disjointed site. Our group developed a radical design strategy to make the entire site habitable at all times of the year, no matter the climatic conditions. In order to achieve this we created a roofing system, that could be used as a flexible common space with a program that could adapt to the needs of its time.

We developed a scheme of flexible space and collective housing. Through the corridor of the peripherique that borders Pantin from inner-city Paris. The low-rise volume is covered by a translucent and waterproof roof supported by a 15 x 20 m grid of columns based on the existing site foundations and columns. A scheme of doubleoriented housing was developed, providing a great progression in intimacy within a controlled floor area by the use of the horizontal circulations.
