Ah, the Sahara Desert. Home to some of the most unique and specialized plants and animals in the world. It brings to mind huge dunes of sand, stretching out as far as the eye can see. And you’re not wrong, exactly. The dunes of the Sahara can be huge, reaching over 400 feet tall. That means you could hide the Empire State Building behind just one of those dunes. But that’s also not completely true. Despite what movies and TV might tell you, the Sahara is only 30 percent sand. While the sand is mostly what you see, it’s just the top layer. The rest is mostly gravel. Once upon a time, the Sahara wasn’t a desert at all. Around 8 thousand years ago, it used to be fertile soil, where plants could and did thrive. There are actually cave drawings showing the area as green and lush. Around 10,500 years ago, monsoons rained over the area, making it more habitable and allowing for more plant growth. That lasted until the end of the Ice Age, when the monsoons dried up, and so did all the extra plant life. Despite this, there is still a wide variety of plant life - over 1200 plants call the Sahara their home. And parts of the Sahara are still just as fertile as they were back during those Monsoons. The Sahara has around 80 thousand acres of oasis, which is just about 2 percent of the total landmass, and much more of the land has been made more hospitable by the use of irrigation from the Nile. As you may have guessed from that 2 percent statistic, the Sahara Desert is huge. Currently, it covers a greater amount of land to the entire continental United States, and crosses the borders of 11 countries: Libya, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Chad, Morocco, Eritrea, Niger, Mauritania, Mali, and the Sudan. We say ‘currently’ because that number isn’t static - the Sahara Desert has been growing. Since the 1960s, it has expanded another quarter million miles, bringing the total up to 3.6 million square miles. This is largely caused by deforestation, for agriculture, animal grazing, and lumber for firewood. This greatly harms local communities, who have greater and greater difficulty in growing food, feeding their herds and heating their homes every year. However, there are efforts to help slow the creep. The Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative has been successful in preventing further by restoring natural plant life to prevent erosion. Eleven countries - Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, and Senegal have come together to support this action, and the Great Green Wall is endorsed by the African Heads of State and Government. This project helps increase biodiversity, creates jobs and diversifies the economy in these countries. Ap Radio: Young Environmentalist Length: 30 seconds ANNCR (Voice of a nature/animal specialist. More David Attenborough than Steve Irwin): And here we have the young environmentalist in its natural habitat SOUND: Tapping on cell phone, slight game noises. Very 8 bit ANNCR: This is a younger member of the species, but they are clearly an industrious creature. Already, they have begun to show interest in the natural world, by the clever use of tools. This particular environmentalist is using their cellphone to play an ‘app’. This app allows them to directly affect their environment. Let’s get a closer look SOUND: Pause, more sounds, slightly louder and quiet footsteps. ANNCR: Yes, this is indeed the ‘Operation: Wild’ application, which donates money to the World Wildlife Foundation when played. This young environmentalist has shown initiative amongst their peers. Others could do the same, if they also played ‘Operation: Wild’, and helped protect the habitats around the world. They need only use their cell phone tools to download it for Apple or Android. It could make the difference for all.
