THE NEW TOOL FACTORY

SOCIAL & HISTORICAL CONTEXT In the last 25 years social changes in Starachowice were easily visible. Dissapearing of the STAR Trucks Factory - main city-forming factor after which social bonds were created caused a domino effect which was destructive for the whole city. Because of the factory collapse a lot of smaller companies and suppliers were closed and in consequence 1/3 of inhabitants lost their work. What is even more important the industrial identity of the society was vanished. In the last 50 years life in the city was organized around the factory which owned cultural institutions and schools. Together with factory cultural centers and schools were left without money and support for continuation of work. City in deep recession couldn’t invest in culture and education for more than 20 years. It is significant that in the city with such a rich history of industry in the begining of 20th century there isn’t any program for monuments preservation which has a direct impact on the ongoing devastation and disappearance of important historical buildings. This situation is not only problem of Starachowice - socio-economic problems appeared in almost all industrial cities in Polan after political system shift but in this particular town because of the strong domination of one industrial branch problems are concentrated and more visible.

To provide the largest possible variety of ways of using public space devoted to inhabitants of the city as well as tourists the main idea of the project was to propose solutions which will evoke different activities in different time. The second assumption was to create adaptive space which anwer to the changing needs of users and conditions such as weather or seasons. Square of the Victory in the project is divided in the three functional zones designed for particular groups of users and main space with hilly shape of the ground which creates a lot of possibilities od uses. Ability of organizing big cultural events such as concerts and festivals is kept in the project and partilly communication and parking function remained. There are bike lanes and pedestrians connections added and benches integrated with retaining walls creating hilly landscape. The new ligting system can be set acording to the needs and temporary use of the square. In the southern part of the square the new building with parking and shops inside is designed and its roof covered with grass can be use as a recreational space all over the year. According to the city council’s plans parking is designed to be easily removed from the square and replaced with local food market. Using existing infrastructure City Forum is proposed as a pavilion for the city and inhabitant’s initiatives where they can orginze events, lectures or discussions about Słupsk’s development.

Strategy of the revitalization of Czyżyny housing district in Krakow

competition entry [1st prize at national level]

URBAN DESIGN

PUBLIC USE

January 2014 cooperation: Natalia Raczkowska UN-Habitat Cracow, Poland

CZYŻYNY 2040 - SPACES OF INTEGRATION is a design and social activities strategy developed to bring interest to the problem of quality of life on Polish mass housing areas, being mostly remains of the housing policy of People’s Republic of Poland. The location has been chosen due to its social potential of local community, strong and active local authorities, public areas requireing revitalisation, large undeveloped spaces, as well as urban design and layout typical for the concerned period. Given features pose an opportunity to push the strategy further and make it applicable to other problematic areas in Poland, which is complementary with the governmental plan of introducing an urban renewal programme formass housing areas. What makes the location interesting, is an abandoned airstrip of Rakowice-Czyżyny Airport. Detatched from the existing buildings, might become a focal point, concentrating the social life and outdoor activities of the estate’s inhabitants. The site neighbours with two university campuses, Cracow Park of Technology, large Polish Aviation Park (integrated with the project), the Museum of Polish Aircraft, student housing area and Cracow Arena (sports/events hall - under construction). The main assumption of the project is widely understood integration: meaning the integration of public spaces, local community and minorities, age groups, different urban zones and functions, stimulated by mutual participation of creating a better urban environment for living.

CZYŝYNY 2040 - SPACES OF INTEGRATION REVITALIZATION OF THE POLISH AVIATION PARK The polish aviation park has a great potential of attracting local community. However, the relatively well-maintained walkways do not offer a great variety of outdoor activities. The aim of the renewal was to include different appliances and features that would improve the park’s quality as a place for leisure and entertainment. CENTRAL PUBLIC SPACE & STRATEGY The final steps of the strategy include the integration of the former airstrip with existing and planned buildings and erection of the central comunity space, housing such functions as a public library, mediaspace, auditorium, exhibition hall and workshop rooms. Rising up from the revitalised airstrip, the building becomes an integral part and final accent of the overall renewal programme. The space is to become the new heart of the district, playing an important role in the process of developing an integrated community and creating a positive synergy inside and outside of the elements of the strategy. The airstrip-community center development includes such features as: a forest of edible plants, community garden, a scene, recessed from the roof, sports facilities, main bike lane and bus route running along the strip, a pedestrian footbridge connecting the housing area with Cracow Park of Technology and Aircraft Museum, district squares located near main transporartion nodes and settling a space for local markets. Small squares, effects of placemaking projects are located in a direct neighbourhood of the airstripe, creating an exention to its leisure time activity offer. The strategy altogether is a pathway to achieving not only an aesthetical and fully functional public space, but also developing a sense of belonging towards the place the local community inhabits and awareness of the importance of the quality of common areas and further a will to take responsibility for the well being and maintenance of the space, but also relations inside the community.

student project June 2013 individual work Cracow University of Technology Cracow, Poland

Aristotle’s words “...people come to towns not just to live but stay there in order to live a good life...” as well as attention to environmental protection became motto for the design of the Downtown House. Such a house in the city makes it possible not to loose touch with nature, to develop neighbourly relations and enjoy urban attractions. Spatious terraces and glass walls let to have a contact with urban landscape.

Intelligent eco-solutions are implemented in the project - including solar active window shutters, photovoltaic panels on the roof and heat pump for recovering of the heat from canalization system and ground. Main facade is covered with system of steel lines which are frame for growing ivy which creates vertical garden / green facade from the street view.

Groundfloor plan Concept of the small furniture factory in the area of Krakow Technology Park in CzyĹźyny district. Projects consists of production and storage buildings, office space, design studios, social areas and exposition zone with cafe.

Construction of facade is built on one modular grid for whole building, only materials change depending on the interior functions and amount of sunlight- the full solid composite panels with metallic finishing, glass curtain walls and perforated lamelas emphasize the strong vertical articulation of horizontal solids.

GRAPHICS

With the separating each of functions to different solids effective use of the building site is achieved. It also let to create big and attractive green area with pleasant, representative public space which can also be used as an extension for the exposision zone in the groundfloor. Moreover it is open to the wider public and office workers of the surrounding area because of the open cafe and garden. Division and location of particular solids speaks for work and functions organization inside the building. Architectural form is based on the observation of the best examples of buildings in the neighborhood eg. functionalist campus of the Cracow University of Technology and particularly the spatial disposition of the cantilevers and bridges. It reflects in the form of the 1st floor of the factory.
