With signs of success against the virus, “the greatest humanitarian crises of our time takes a back seat to issues of justice. Yet, the reality of AIDS is as devastating as ever.

“The greatest humanitarian crisis of our day.” —United Nations
nce desperate situations turn into incredible stories of hope when the Body of Christ stands up. In Rwanda, Pastor Stranton shines as a man transformed by the hope and wonder of the Gospel. He, along with his congregation have discovered the practical meaning of compassion in the face of unimaginable crisis. They live with the reality of HIV/AIDS on a daily basis. People in his own community face the slow brutal death of AIDS.
Those who are affected are afraid, so we held their hands. Those who are infected feel alone, so we visited them. Those who are infected are confused, so we counseled them. Those who are infected feel rejected, so we accepted them. -Pastor Stranton Stranton Story is a video produced by one of our key Reach4Life partners, Saddleback Community Church. It was a video birthed from their work with local pastors in Western Rwanda. Because of Rick Warren’s great leadership of Saddleback, they are very strategic about any response or implementation of a program. As they worked 7
with Rwandan pastors like pastor Stranton, they came to realize they needed to develop a strategy to help Rwandan children and teenagers resist the HIV virus. The response of the Rwandan pastors was overwhelming. There was only one tool that effectively prevented HIV in Africa. That tool was Reach4Life. As a result of these conversations with Rwandan Church leadership, the staff of Saddleback’s P.E.A.C.E. plan initiative contacted Biblica about how they could utilize Reach4Life with teenagers in Rwanda. The story of how Reach4Life came to Rwanda is just one in a long line of successful battles in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The reality is, AIDS is a threat we can defeat. HIV is a completely preventable virus as long as we fight with the right weapons-tools that teach abstinence outside of marriage. The statistics surrounding HIV/AIDS are still staggering. 34 million people are living with AIDS today. Another 30 million people have already died from the disease. 97% of those living with AIDS reside in low-and-middle-income countries particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where 2/3 of all HIV/

AIDS cases are found. The results in sub-Saharan Africa have been catastrophic. Most villages are full of AIDS graveyards. In some South African townships they are running out of space to bury the dead. Some have resorted to drastic measures such as burying bodies on top of older caskets, or burying the dead in a vertical position so as to use less ground space. The result of the death has led to a “sandwich generation.” The grandparents’ generation (mostly grandmothers) and children live, while the parents’ generation has died. Those who have traditionally been the primary workers in the prime of their lives are gone. The children are left to fend for themselves. In some countries the HIV infection rate remains above 40%. In countries such as Swaziland, the odds of a 15 year-old living to age 35 is 1 in 10. A recent medical test, held 15 minutes from where the pictures in this article were taken, found that 9 out of 10 people who voluntarily tested were HIV positive. While great gains have been made in the fight 9
against HIV, much work still needs to be done. Every number in every statistic represents a precious creation of God. Now is not the time for the Church to grow complacent in our efforts to fight HIV. Now is the time to double them. Why is our current reaction to HIV so vital? It is because of the sandwich generation. The children and teenagers living in areas devastated by AIDS live each day one step closer to contracting the HIV virus. Each minute a child grows older is a minute closer to their first sexual contact. In many African countries the age of first sexual contact remains around twelve. In some countries the age is closer to nine-years-old. People who call themselves followers of Christ must remain diligent in the care of those most affected by AIDS. We do not have a choice. As the United Nations has declared, “This is the greatest humanitarian crisis of our day.” In the words of pastor Stranton, “If we don’t do something, who will? If we don’t show God’s love, who will? If we don’t show up, who will?”

reality numbers
AIDS ORPHANS: 17 MILLION CHILDREN GLOBALLY LIVING AS ORPHANS DUE TO AIDS For some, the reality of AIDS is easy to dismiss due to the way the HIV virus is transmitted. Some feel that those with AIDS are getting what they deserve for their sins. However, what is less easy to dismiss is the innocent victims of AIDS-the children. 17 million children globally live as orphans due to AIDS. They are victims of the “sandwich generation” (i.e. the grandparents and children live, but the parents are dead from AIDS).
EACH NUMBER BELOW REPRESENTS A LIFE, A CHILD WHO HAS BEEN ORPHANED BY AIDS.
While the “sandwich generation” numbers can overwhelm, there is also hope. If we can focus our efforts on reaching this young generation of orphans and others vulnerable to the virus, we can stop the HIV/ AIDS pandemic and prevent a second “sandwich generation” from occurring. 10

History of R4L R4L Written in Africa 2004
In 2004 Biblica’s South African staff grew frustrated with seeing so many teenagers die of AIDS. Biblica is about the Bible. So, they created a tool using Scripture to teach abstinence to teens.
R4L Launches in Schools Strategic Evangelism
“It’s the only thing that works.” On my second trip to Africa I took a copy of Reach4Life given to me by a friend. At the time, I was a pastor investing in the lives of children at an orphan care point and had no idea the power of the small R4L book I was holding. When I met Jumbo, the missionary I’d worked with for years who oversees 17 such care points representing thousands of orphans, I gave him the copy of R4L. I asked Jumbo, “Have you ever seen this?” Jumbo laughed and replied, “Yeah, we use it all the time. It’s the only thing that works.” Jumbo’s response shocked me. Jumbo is a unique missionary in that he is South African. He has left the comfort of a well-to-do family to dedicate his life to the care of AIDS orphans. There are few people alive who know more about the AIDS pandemic and what tools effectively impact vulnerable children and teenagers. When Jumbo speaks, I listen. My conversation with Jumbo began a investigative journey. I began to study R4L and discovered for myself R4L’s unique power combination of Scripture, small groups, and practical in-your-face language. I am convinced there is not another tool like it in the fight to stop HIV. —Brian Carlson
The most common introduction to R4L is in public high schools. African school masters desperate to keep their students alive, willingly invite R4L into their schools.
R4L is a New Testament Bible Engagement
R4L is a completely unique tool in that it is an actual Bible. Each student in a school receives their own copy of the R4L New Testament. The small group lessons are side by side with Scripture.
R4L Small Groups Relationships
When R4L launches in a school, students are broken up into “R4L Groups.” These groups meet for 40 weeks going over the 40 small group lessons.

GLOBAL
Global Impact What began in South Africa has spread across 5 continents. R4L has been translated into 10 languages (3 in production), and implemented in 26 countries. In November 2011 a unique group met in Johannesburg, South Africa. People from four continents and countless countries gathered with one purpose—to design a blueprint for Reach4Life version 2.0. After eight years and 1.2 million copies, it was time to update the tool. While Biblica staff represented a portion of those who attended, the majority were R4L global partners (partner organizations who use R4L). Our partner organizations are the experts. They are the people on the front lines every day engaging young people with the transforming power of God’s Word through Reach4Life. Most of these partners flew internationally to Johannesburg on their own dime because they are such believers in the tool. The meeting was a tremendous success, 12
and the plans developed are currently in production. The original South African writing team who wrote the first version of Reach4Life will update the tool over this next year. A by-product of the meeting was a glimpse of just how global R4L has become. Each region of the world had unique ideas and stories which displayed the versatility of R4L. Soon, R4L will be launched in three aditional languages in India, Russia, and the Ukraine. We are in serious discussions with a major partner about launching R4L in the tent cities of Haiti. The worldwide success of R4L shows how important Biblica’s stewardship of the resource is. The only limiting factor to the growth of this program is finances, which is why developing sustainable funding streams is critical.

engaging teens funding reach4life Would it be possible to develop a tool parallel to R4L that engages American teens with choices in sexual purity and the AIDS pandemic while challenging them to respond financially?
by BRIAN CARLSON photography by KURT BIRKY
The average American teenager controls $104 of disposable income every week. That works out to $190 Billion dollars passing through teenagers hands each year. Now, for a moment consider what most teenagers spend that money on—fast food, iTunes, movies, clothes. Their shopping list is limitless. With no mortgage, no bills, and few responsibilities teenagers are 13

left spending their $190 billion on themselves. These rampant spending habits combined with a lack of financial demands makes teenagers the demographic with the most disposable income in the United States. It is no accident most media outlets and advertising is geared towards capturing young wallets. While teenagers We believe we have self-centered could completely tendencies, they fund Reach4Life are also highly moin the developing tivated to make a world by engaging difference in the U.S. teenagers. world. They are hungry for causes and passionately fight for visions bigger than themselves. Some have compared today’s teenagers to the World 14
War II generation. Where the WWII generation was motivated to sacrifice and fight to defeat Hitler, this young generation is willing to sacrifice and fight for any cause truly grabbing their heart. With the disposable income controlled by teenagers, along with their natural interest in sacrificing and fighting for causes they believe in, we began asking some questions: • What if we were able to grab teenage hearts for the plight of the poor and children who are orphaned by AIDS? • What if the HIV/AIDS pandemic became a cause to sacrifice and fight for outside of themselves? • Would it be possible to give them this cause while challenging them in their own sexual choices? These questions led us to an epipha-

Engaging Teens: Funding R4L ny: Would it be possible to develop a tool parallel to R4L that engages American teens with choices in sexual purity and the AIDS pandemic while challenging them to respond financially? The idea shaped into a product for American student ministries called African Experience. African Experience is an 8-week “reality TV” style video curriculum currently in production. The 8 videos will follow 7 California teenagers and their youth pastor from Pomona First Baptist Church as they travel on a mission trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. Their mission is to enter public high schools in Soweto, (a suburb of Johannesburg) hold assemblies, to build relationships with African teenagers, and pass out R4L Bibles to begin R4L Groups. While working in public high schools the mission team will also experience African adventures including Safaris, zip line tours, and extreme experiences to complete the “reality TV” style of the video. These adventures will tie into lessons the team learns sur-

rounding the AIDS pandemic and sexual choices. The entire experience will be captured and edited into the 8-week video curriculum for American student ministries. Youth pastors will take their student ministries through the curriculum. In a sense, youth pastors will use African Experience to take their entire student ministry on a journey to Africa to witness the reality of AIDS. As a part of the experience each student ministry will receive the R4L Challenge. The challenge
Sex and U.S. Christian Teenagers U.S. teenagers are having a sexual pandemic of their own. Studies recently released show that 7 out of 10 U.S. teenagers have sex outside of marriage before their 19th birthday. Movies and media have made alternative sexual behaviors such as homosexuality and oral sex as acceptable as going to the mall. Sexual activity among teenagers who call themselves Christians are within 5% of those who do not attend any type of church.African Experience will not only challenge teenagers to respond to the AIDS pandemic, but to evaluate their own personal choices in the areas of sexuality.

Engaging Teens: Funding R4L will be for each student ministry going through African Experience to raise $6000 to purchase 2000 R4L New Testaments for the developing world. In 2007, I (Brian) gave a similar challenge to a group of middle school students. We challenged them to raise $10,00 in a year to fight HIV/AIDS. Not only did they meet this goal, but they produced $40,000 in six months! We anticipate a similar response from student ministries going through African Experience. Through conservative estimates we believe an African Experience beta test among 30 student ministries will produce $90,000. That works out to 30,000 copies of Reach4Life Bibles placed in the hands of African teenagers just If you want to from the beta test. 30,000 copies is just get close to the beginning. Through Biblica’s relationGod; get close ships with major publishing houses speto the things cializing in youth ministry curriculum and that break products, we anticipate African Experience will provide sustainable funding to provide our God’s heart.

Engaging Teens: Funding R4L goal of getting 1 million copies of Reach4Life in the hands of vulnerable children and teenagers in the developing world each year. It is often said, “If you want to get close to God, get close to the things that break God’s heart.” God’s heart is breaking for the continent of Africa. This tool will expose U.S. teenagers to what God cares deeply about-the orphan.
17
Most teenagers in the United States have no idea what is occurring across the sea. African Experience will not only grab teenagers hearts for Africa but will provide a practical way for them to respond by providing a Reach4Life New Testament to every child or teenager who live in the cross-hairs of the HIV virus.

OPPORTUNITY We are taking a non-traditional approach to funding Reach4Life. Instead of the traditional model of dependency upon major donors, our strategy is to build dependency upon American teenagers. 18
Now we come to the “big ask. This is the purpose and reason we have spent so much time and energy on creating this eMagazine. We are looking for a few major donors who can help us make African Experience possible. Producing a video proj-
ect is always expensive, especially when that project is international. Traditional fund raising involves finding major donors to make a long-term commitment to provide funding for a program. However, we have found that dependency upon major donors to fund Reach4Life makes our ability to respond to needs dependent upon the ups and downs of the U.S. economy. We are taking a non-traditional approach to funding Reach4Life. Instead of the tra-

FUNDED VS. ACTUAL NEED
The past few years, 100,000 R4L Bibles per year have been put into ministry. The real need our partners expressed at the Global R4L Summit in Fall 2011 is 1,000,000 per year. At $3 per Bible that is $3,000,000 needed per year.
WHY TEENAGERS? WHY NOT MAJOR DONORS? MOUNTAIN

ditional model of dependency upon major donors, our strategy is to build dependency upon American teenagers. For this teenage centered strategy to take place we need initial investments from major donors to create the African Experience tool. We are asking people to help us fund a project that will produce this new sustainable model of funding for Reach4Life. We are asking you to help us fund the African Experience project. Our total budget for producing African Experience is $70,000. Our goal is to raise that money from traditional major donors willing to make an initial short-term investment into what will provide long-term results. At the Global Reach4Life Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa this past fall the issue of actual need verses what is available was a key discussion point. While 19
Not only is engaging this many youth ministries doable, it is much more reasonable than finding such an extraordinary amount of $50,000 donors.

over the past few years we have averaged 100,000 copies of R4L placed into the hands of teenagers, the real need is much greater. Just from the ministry partners represented at the 2011 Summit, it was determined the real need was 1,000,000 copies per year. At a production cost of $3.00 per New Testament, that means in order to fund the actual need we need to generate $3,00,000. Such a large number is sobering, especially if we try to approach the cost using traditional development methodology. To raise this amount through major donors we would need to find 50 major donors averaging $50,000 each, or hundreds of donors giving less than $5,000 each. However, if we use African Adventure and the R4L Challenge to encourage youth ministries to raise $6,000 each, then the $3,000,000 is suddenly within reach. To raise $3,000,000 it would only take 500 student ministries averaging $6,000 each. When one considers there are over 300,000 protestant churches in the United States it is not a far reach to see the possibility that African Experience is the answer. Potentially, engaging student ministries will provide sustainable funding for the one tool proven to stop HIV/AIDS among teenagers in Africa. Stop for a moment and consider the influence 1,000,000 copies of R4L New Testaments could have upon the AIDS Pandemic in the next year. HIV/AIDS is preventable. The AIDS Pandemic is stoppable. Reach4Life can play a crucial role in the fight. We simply need a few major donors to stand up and provide the funding needed to make African Experience a reality.ďƒź REACH4LIFE JOURNAL | ISSUE #1 SPRING 2012
Q&A
OUR HOPE IS THAT BY READING THROUGH THIS eMAGAZINE YOU NOW HAVE A CLEAR PICTURE OF THE POWER OF REACH4LIFE AND WHY WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT AFRICAN EXPERIENCE. IF YOU ARE FEELING LED TO RESPOND FINANCIALLY, HERE IS A Q& A ON HOW TO DO JUST THAT.
HOW TO RESPOND Q&A
Why not use regular Biblica donors for this project? Biblica has a solid donor network from which we provide funds for Reach4Life. However, all of the Reach4Life funds are already designated to R4L projects around the globe. The priority with such funds is to provide R4L books and resources for the implementation of programs. How much are you looking for? Obviously, we are open to any amount. Our overall goal from donors for African Experience is $50,000. When are gifts needed by? We are currently in preproduction for African Experience. We begin shooting in July. Gifts are appreciated at any time. However, it would be most helpful if they came before April 30, 2012.
21
Is there financial accountability? Biblica is a founding member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. Your U.S. gift is tax deductible as allowed by U.S. law. If I have questions or concerns, who should I contact? Brian Carlson is available at any time to answer questions or concerns. Feel free to contact via his cell phone at 719.235.0825 or e-mail at brian.carlson@biblica.com. Where do I send a gift? All checks should be made out to “Biblica” with “R4L African Experience” on the memo line. Please mail checks to: ATTN: Brian Carlson Biblica 1820 Jet Stream Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80921
