STUKA! The very name is synonymous with the screaming sirens and the crump of heavy bombs. For the lightly armed Partisan forces it meant despair, defeat and in a lot of cases, death. For the five long years Stuka units in the Balkan theater have come and gone, depending on the Axis war fortunes. They did not have permanent base, as was the case with NSGR. 7 for example, but the bomb loads that the Ju 87 carried and the precision to deliver them, was the wining combination. In all major military operations in Yugoslavia against Tito’s forces, Stuka was an element which was always included in Commander’s plans. In September 1943 it was Stukas who spearheaded the defeat of the Italian forces since German land forces were few in numbers. Until the last day of WW II in Yugoslavia, Stuka was on the first line of fire even against a strong foe such as the Red Army.

SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper 1943–1945 Massimiliano Afiero The military career of Jochen Peiper, one of the most valiant and decorated officers of the Waffen SS, told through the main battles and campaigns, which involved the units under his command, especially the armored Kampfgruppen of the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, starting from the fighting on the front Kharkov, between February and March 1943, passing through the fighting for the salient of Kursk, the intervention in Italy, the new campaign on the Ukrainian front between autumn and winter of 1943-44, fighting on the front of Normandy, the counter-offensive in the Ardennes, until the last fighting on the Hungarian front and in Austria. The analysis of the various battles told through the testimonies of the direct protagonists, the war reports of the period, the original documents, without forgetting the involvement in some war crimes, all accompanied as always, by an exceptional iconographic apparatus, maps, documents and images, coming from the military archives all over the world and from the main private collections, to make the discussion of the topics even more compelling and realistic.

The Battleships of World War II vol I Mirosław Skwiot The idea of creating such an album dedicated to the battleships of World War Two had been born in the last dozen or so years. During this period, various concepts appeared in print, which were meant to present those beautiful ships in the form of a “condensed pill”. Most of the contributions have been made by foreign authors who had had greater access to photographic references. It was not easy, because it was difficult to choose several photos illustrating the entire history of the battleship, starting from the moment of the keel laying and ending with its sinking. Then, in some cases it has a further history as a wreck resting on the seabed until today. Initially, we selected over 1,000 photos, which we had to give up because of the size of such an album. In the end, it was divided into two volumes, thanks to which the number of photos remained only slightly reduced. In the case of vessels with a large or interesting combat history, we tried to put more photos illustrating their operational activities. Just like every project executed quite quickly, and the album was made in the period from June to October, I could not collect all the photos that I would like to put in it. There are two reasons: first, there was no time to look for them in the resources of the world’s archives; secondly, not all ships have the right number of photos that could be published. The best example of this is the Japanese battleship “Musashi”, of which only few photographs exist.

Hunt-class Destroyers In Polish Navy Service Mariusz Borowiak, Waldemar Góralski This book is the first extensive publication concerning the 1941-1945 wartime careers of the escort destroyers OORP Krakowiak, Kujawiak and Ślązak. Polish escort destroyers of the Hunt II class, transferred on loan by the British, were among the busiest warships flying the white and red ensign during World War II. The author searched archives both in Poland and abroad. In the years 2015-2018, members of the Shipwrecks Expeditions Association were the first to locate and investigate the wreck of Kujawiak. They also raised her bell. What they had seen and filmed at the depth of 100 m during their four expeditions was beyond their wildest expectations. The text is complemented by computer generated images of all three Polish escort destroyers and the British HMS Badsworth. A riveting story of three steel „musketeers” of the Polish Navy. The greatest achievement of Polish shipwreck hunters!

The German Destroyer Z37 Carlo Cestra Z37 was a German destroyer built for the Kriegsmarine in Kiel during World War II. She was laid down on 2 January 1941, launched on 24 February 1941, commissioned on 16 July 1942 and became operational in December 1942, though while she was going from Kiel to Swinemünde to work up, she collided with a freighter and had to return to the repair yard. The post-World War I Reichsmarine continued to use the term “torpedo boat” for surface warships displacing less than 800 tonnes and carrying torpedoes as their primary armament, and it was not until the first true destroyers were under construction, from 1934 onwards, that the term Zerstörer (destroyer) came into vogue in Germany. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Nazi Germany’s Kriegsmarine had 21 destroyers in service, while another one was just being completed. These 22 vessels, including three classes (Type 34, 34A and 36) had all been built in the 1930s, making them modern vessels, as no destroyers remained in German hands following the close of the First World War. Including that final pre-war vessel, a further 19 were brought into service during the war and more were captured from opposing navies, included the Italian Navy (Regia Marina) after the Italian Armistice with the Allies in 1943.

The Japanese Destroyer Shimakaze Mariusz Motyka The Imperial Naval Staff demanded the development of a destroyer project with owerful weaponry and capable of reaching speed of 40 knots. The project was approved and marked with the symbol “F52”, it was included in the financial plan of 1939 “Maru Yon”. Ac According to the project, the armament was to consist of three two-barrel 127 mm gun turrets, and two seven-tube torpedo launchers. Due to the heavy weight of the tubes and the inability of emergency manual control of the launchers, this idea was abandoned. In connection with this, a project was prepared and the construction of the Japanese destroyer with the number 125later nam, ed “Shimakaze” commenced.

The Japanese Cruiser Maya Waldemar Góralski, Dariusz Miszczak Following the defeat in the Guadalcanal campaign, at the beginning of 1943, the Navy Technical Department and The High Com Command of the Imperial Japanese Navy strived to increase the defensive potential of all their warships. Apart from standard refits of the majority of the Imperial Japanese Navy units, a plan was adopted, which called for reconstruction of two “Takao” class heavy cruisers into anti-aircraft units. Through a coincidence only the Maya underwent such conversion. This publication shows the cruiser in her anti-aircraft configuration and briefly describes her career.

The Russian Battleship Marat Oleg Pomoshnikov, Jan Radziemski In the interwar period the battleship “Marat” was considered a symbol of the naval power of the Soviet Union. She was the most most-described and filmed ship of the Land of the Soviets. In her 40-year service, rich in events, she survived four wars, but only in one of them - the civil war - she used her main guns in an engagement with enemy warships. Only once in her career. In other conflicts, she served as a monitor rather than a battleship, shelling mainly land targets and carrying out counter-battery fire. At the end, she fell victim of the destructive power of German dive bombers. From that moment, she was a battleship only on paper.

The Type XXI U-boat Dmitry Mironov, Daniel Pastwa The Type XXI U-boot was one of the few types of weapon that, despite being unable to take part in combat, completely changed the character of naval actions at sea. It was the first true submarine in history. The other types of vessels designed so far were basically “diving ships” that might have been underwater for some time, but most of the time they had to be on the surface because their underwater range was severely limited. Under water they were slow and not manoeuvrable, and often had to emerge onto the surface to charge their electric batteries. The Type XXI was designed from the outset as a true submarine whose natural environment was to be the deep seas.

The Greek Armored Cruiser Georgios Averof 1911-1913 Tassos Katsikas Georgios Averof (Θ/Κ Γεώργιος Αβέρωφ) is a Pisa class armored cruiser of the pre-dreadnought era. The ship was the third from the series of Pisa class ships after Pisa and Amalfi. The ship initially (1907) was ordered for Marinha do Brasil, but one year later the Bra Brazilian government abandoned the order. As a result of this decision, the construction works for the armored cruiser halted. However in 1909 the ship was acquired by the Royal Hellenic Navy and named Georgios Averof.

Aircraft Carrier USS Lexington 1935 Carlo Cestra The USS Lexington (CV-2) was the second aircraft carrier of Lexington class built by the United States, but the first used operatio operationally; in fact the first was the USS Langley, but as an aircraft carrier she served only as an experimental ship. The history of the USS Lexington was troubled: in fact it was designed in 1916 to be an atypical battle cruiser, as little armored, but with heavy cannons. Because of the Washington Treaty of 1922 about the reduction of naval armaments, she was reclassified and converted into an aircraft carrier, capable of carrying a flight of 85 aircraft.

The German Armoured Cruiser SMS Blücher Marsden Samuel, Wolfgang Bohlayer The USS Lexington (CV-2) was the second aircraft carrier of Lexington class built The SMS Blücher was the last armoured cruiser built by the German Empire. She was constructed to counter the new armoured cruisers rumoured as being built by the British. Blücher was larger than preceding armoured cruisers and carried heavier guns but was unable to match the size and armament of the battlecruisers which replaced armoured cruisers in the British Royal Navy and – later - the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine). When the Germans learned of the true details of these new British ships, called Invincible class, and that they were to be armoured with 12” battleship guns, they realized that the Invincible class was a completely new type of warship, soon to be known as battlecruisers. By the time the Germans learned of this it was too late to turn back and construction of the Blücher took place as scheduled. The ship was named after the Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher, the commander of the Prussian forces at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

The Japanese Destroyer Suzutsuki Mariusz Motyka Suzutsuki was the third ship from the series of the most powerful Akizuka destroyers, designed specifically as anti-aircraft defense ships, whose main armament consisted of 8 universal 100 mm caliber guns with excellent ballistic characteristics. The Akizuia destroyers were designed before the beginning of World War II as anti-aircraft ships for fast Japanese groups of aircraft carriers. They were completely different from the previous Japanese destroyers, in which the emphasis was put on strong artillery (127 mm guns) and torpedo armament. They were inspired by the British _Dido _class light anti-aircraft cruisers, however, in contrast with them, the Akizuka destroyers were medium size ships intended for anti-aircraft defense of groups of fleet.

Battleship HMS Royal Oak Witold Koszela
British battleship HMS Royal Oak secured place in the history books as unlikely hero – sunk as a result of one of the most famous naval operations of the World War II. German submarine U-47, commanded by G. Prien, after undetected penetration into the Royal Navy Scapa Flow base, sent her down the bottom of the ocean together with the majority of her crew. This was one of the most painful losses of the British fleet during the war. Royal Oak was one of five class “Revenge” vessels, better known as simple “R”, battleships built throughout the World War I. Amongst her strong sides were very powerful main guns, quite good sailing abilities and interesting, “bulky” profile. “R” battleships have not participated in many of the naval operations of the Great War, as for Royal Oak she took her part in the battle of Jutland. Between the wars HMS Royal Oak was incorporated into the Atlantic Fleet and Home Fleet. She operated on the Mediterranean Sea during the Spanish Civil War.

The P-47D was the most produced version of the Thunderbolt fighter. From overall number of 15 683 P-47s built the 12 609 of them were the version D. The first trial P-47D left the factory in September 1942. The first serial version of the P-47D was the D-1-RE variant, which can be easily distinguished from the P-47C by its additional blinds on lower part of the engine cowling. The important change was also the additional cockpit armour. The most important variant of the early P-47Ds was the P-47D-5 version. It received the installation which injected the water and methanol mixture to the R-2800-21 engine’s cylinders.

Brewster F2A Buffalo. F2A-1, F2A-2, F2A-3 Maciej Noszczak The first batch of the F2A-1 Buffalos picked by US Navy from the Brewster factory between May and December 1939 were powered by Wright 1820-34 Cyclone engine. Moreover they differed from the XF2A-1 prototype in enlarged canopies. F2A-1s were equipped with telescope sights. Antenna masts were moved from left to right side of upper fuselage in front of the cockpit. The landing light was relocated from the bottom left engine cowling to the left wing underside. Wing tips were shortened. Lower part of the leading edge of vertical stabilizer received a profile reaching further on, up to the back frame of the cockpit. The F2A-2 received a new engine: Wright R-1820-40, which extended the weight of the front part of the plane. To keep the centre of gravity unchanged, the nose part was shortened by 12 cm.

The Japanese Destroyer Shimakaze Mariusz Motyka In 1939 the Japanese Navy General Staff demanded to develop a project of a destroyer with a speed of 40 knots. The project was called „Project F52” and was included in the plan called Maru Yon. In connection with this, a project was prepared and the construction of the Japanese destroyer with number 125 (later named Shimakaze) began. Laying the keel took place on 8 August, 1941, in the Maizuru Naval Arsenal. Launching was carried out on July 18, 1942. Shimakaze was constructed on the basis of the extended hull of the Kagerō type destroyer. Increasing the size of the ship, and hence its displacement, was used primarily to enhance the torpedo armament and to install a much stronger engine, working at higher pressure, which allowed to achieve a very high speed (40.9 knots during testing). In the program of 1942, the construction of next 16 units of this type was planned, however, due to the difficult situation in the industry and the dynamically changing situation on the front, it was ultimately abandoned and only the prototype was built.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G Maciej Noszczak Messerschmitt Bf 109 G (Gustav) was powered by a Daimler-Benz DB 605A straight engine with 1450 hp, which could be increased to 1770 hp for a short time after the injection of the methanol and water mixture (MW 50). In order to increase Gustav’s capabilities at high altitudes, the DB 605A engines were equipped with a larger compressor, „borrowed” from the DB 603 engine (used, among others, in Me 410), which resulted in significant changes in the construction of the engine mounting and cowling (large, streamlined „Blobs” instead of the previous „Beule” locks). The modified engine is designated DB 605AS (hence the versions eg G-5/AS, G-6/AS).

Focke-Wulf Fw 190 S, F, G models Maciej Noszczak The Focke-Wulf 190 was a relatively universal and modifiable airplane. It was easy to adapt it to different roles, and its strong con construction and resistant engine were the advantages of versions designed for ground attacks. Theoretically, all Fw 190 versions were able to carry bombs, but the typical “fighter-bomber” was the “F” version. Its history began with the reinforcement of fuel tanks, engine and chassis of the Fw 190 A-4/U3. This is how the Fw 190 F-1 version, produced in 18 copies, was made.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G/K G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, G-10, K-4 Maciej Noszczak Messerschmitt Bf 109 G (Gustav) was powered by a Daimler-Benz DB 605A straight engine with 1450 hp, which could be increased to 1770 hp for a short time after the injection of the methanol and water mixture (MW 50).

Curtiss P-40 B, C, D, E Maciej Noszczak The decision to start the production of the Curtiss P-40 fighter was made primarily due to the relatively low airframe price and the possibility of launching it almost immediately (based on Curtiss P-36s ready fuselages). The P-40 did not have a turbocharger, but despite this the requirements were constantly increasing, especially when it comes to the maximum speed. It was requested to raise it by over 100 km/h (up to 580 km/h). It required a number of construction changes e.g. new exhaust pipes, new shape and size of the air intake to the carburetor at the top of the engine cover, moving forward the coolers under the nose. After the tests in the NACA wind tunnel it turned out that these changes were not enough. The plane underwent further aerodynamic refinements, using, among others, smooth riveting and retractable tail ring. In the end, the speed was 589 km/h at 4570 m, which gave the green light for serial production.

The British Hunt-class Escort Destroyer HMS Badsworth Waldemar Góralski HMS Badsworth (L03) was one of eighty-six British Hunt-class escort destroyers. The class would eventually comprise four separate types built between 1939 and 1943. Design work on the class began in 1938. The Admiralty wanted to create warships optimized for convoy escort duties and patrolling. Since there was a huge demand for such vessels in the fleet, their cost was to be the deciding factor. A decision was made to design ships which would be smaller and slower than an average destroyer. In conjunction with their overall simple design this was to allow for rapid mass-scale production. The design was based on the Black Swan-class sloop, but the new destroyers were to be faster and better armed.

The Soviet Light Bomber Petlyakov Pe-2 Oleg Pomoshnikov Petlakov Pe-2 (Peshka) is the best-known twin-engine light bomber of Soviet aviation in World War II. The plane was susceptible to structural changes, which allowed it to be used as a heavy fighter (also night), a dive bomber or a long reconnaissance plane. Vladimir Petlakov constructed the Pe-2 in prison, where he got in 1937 for allegedly delaying the works on the ANT-42 Tupolev bomber. Petlakow, while serving the sentence, was appointed the head of the constructors’ group, which was to create a fast and durable machine that could freely escort the ANT-42. That is how the VI-100 was made. It was a quite advanced plane for its time (the first flight took place on December 22, 1939). It was a fully metal construction. The machine was equipped with a pressurised cockpit, turbochargers and many advanced electronic systems.

Rogožarski IK-3 Nenad Miklušev, Djordje Nikolić As late as the first half of the 1930s, the innovations which led the shift from the biplane to the monoplane airplane designs reached the aeronautical industry in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, traditionally considered second-rate compared to those of the major European powers. By then, the Vazduhoplovstvo vojske Kraljevine Jugoslavije (VVKJ - Royal Yugoslav Air Force) was hopelessly outdated. The core of its arsenal consisted of obsolete biplanes, including the Breguet 19 light bombers, Potez 25 trainers, Avia BH 33 fighters, as well as Dewoitine D1 high wing monoplanes fighters. Due to the reluctance of the long term allies to supply modern equipment to renew the aging Air Force, the Yugoslav government lost precious time by failing to commit immediately to the industrial cooperation with the only other available source at the time, Germany.

The Leopard 1 And Leopard 2 From Cold War To Modern Day M.P. Robinson, Vitor Costa, Chris Jerrett This is a brief discussion of the iconic Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tank families, touching on some of its best-known members. Serious students of the Leopard family are encouraged to seek out the Leopard trilogy (2003 Barbarossa Books) written by Michael Shackle Shackleton, the Tankograd special series, or the concise Osprey New Vanguard titles by Michael Jerchel. Excellent written, digital and web based reference covering the Leopard’s use by the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Spain- and naturally Germany; have all appeared in recent years as well as a wide range of excellent model kits. Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 MBTs are of course completely different vehicles in concept- and they come from different stages of the Bundeswehr’s Cold War armaments program. They nonetheless have a number of similarities and are together the most commercial commercially successful and widely sold European tank designs from the 1960s to the present day.

Fokker D.VII. Kaiser’s best fighter Tomasz J. Kowalski, Szymon Grzywocz, Damian Majsak When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and over overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils. (Luke 11: 21-22)The above words taken from the Gospel according to St. Luke perfectly reflect the conditions in which a defeated Germany was put by the victorious Allied powers. Item 4 of the Armistice of November 11, 1918 demanded immediate demobilization of Germany Germany’s air force and the surrender of 2,000 military aircraft, particularly Fokker D.VIIs. The Fokker D.VIl was the only type listed by name for what reason? Why should this machine have been of such particular importance to those dictating the armistice conditions? The answer is simple and obvious: the Fokker D.VII clearly outclassed the machines operated by the victorious coalition’s air forces. It was a design that was to influence many fighters conceived in the inter-war period and was good enough to remain in service with various air forces until the mid-thirties.

Albatros D.III/D.V Aces’ fighter Tomasz J. Kowalski, Wojciech Fajga, Vitor Costa, Damian Majsak The Albatros D.III, often called „De-drei”, is a neat single-seat biplane fighter armed with two guns firing through the propeller. It goes up like a balloon and at full throttle it reaches 170 kilometers per hour. One of the most popular fighters of the First World War. Most aircraft aces of this time fought in this plane – among them Manfred von Richthofen and Ernst Udet. After the war this aircraft was used by many pilots, such as pilots from the Polish airforce and Ameri American volunteers from the Kościuszko Squadron.

Before the Birth of the MBT. Western Tank Development 1945-1959 Dick Taylor, MP Robinson This book is intended to be the first in a short series looking at the major developments of battle tanks by the western nations in the period from the end of the Second World War to the present. During WW2 the tank came of age, and was probably the predominant land weapon of the period. However the tank was never perfected during the war, and the post-war decades have seen enormous resources expended on trying to do just that – to make the tank perfect. This of course is an impossible task, as threats evolve and mutate, and trying to design a vehicle (or indeed any weapon of war) to do a multitude of different tasks will inevitably lead to compromise. Notwithstanding this, the development of the modern ‘Chariots of Fire’ in the 1950s was an utterly fascinating process, with ten or more project and trial tank designs rejected for every design actually adopted.

It was supported by tanks and guns of German production. The author focuses on describing operations of Hungarian armoured forces in their fight against the Soviet Union, especially the Czechoslovakian campaign of 1938. The book has numerous photographs presenting not just the military aspect, but also the everyday life of Hungarian soldiers on fronts of the Second World War.

Renault FT & M1917 Light Tank Jacek Szafrański, Samir Karmieh During its 25-year service, the Renault FT tank was used in many countries around the world: France, Italy, Poland, the United States, Belgium, Brazil, Greece, Turkey, China, the Baltic countries, Soviet Russia, Japan, Romania, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Yugoslavia. It was in service during both world wars. The structural arrangement created by L. Renault with its transmission and drive wheels at the rear, combat compartment in the middle of the hull, and a movable turret, has become a classic construction solution for tanks and is still used nowadays. It was a base for new tanks manufactured in the United States, Italy, and the Soviet Union.

Captivating tale of German submarines which on the eve of Third Reich’s capitulation refused to surrender to the Allied Forces and decided to flee to Argentina. The authors found many unpublished documents in England, Argentina, Germany and USA. They disprove myths and uncover lies surrounding the escape of German Nazis and transport of large quantities of wealth, mostly gold, as well as documents of the most precious armament projects of the German Reich, which were to change the fate of the war. The book used, among others, documented interrogations of U-Boot commanders who were kept in the camp for prisoners of exceptional value near Washington.
Unusual passion of Marek Katarzyński, Polish traveller and war on Pacific history enthusiast, has led to organisation of many expeditions that searched for lost American and Japanese crews. A travel through the inaccessible islands of Pacific Ocean, discovering the missing wrecks of airplanes, crews’ personal belongings, descriptions of fights across the Pacific and solving numerous mysteries are the subjects of this fascinating book.
