Kagiso Morake Architecture Portfolio | 2020 Work University of the Witwatersrand
“I never design a building before I’ve seen the site and met the people who will be using it. - Frank Lloyd Wright I am Kagiso Morake, a third-year architecture student, a part-time photographer and an enthusiastic climate activist. I live by the motive of making the world a better place through means of creativity and discoveries. My experience as an architecture student has not only enhanced and broadened my passion, but it has made it a testimony I shall fulfil for the years to come. This portfolio showcases my thinking process and execution of projects that I have carefully designed. I used different design principles that include spatial poetics, sustainability and spatial planning. The articulation of these projects show my current capabilities as an aspiring architect. With room for improvement, the purpose of my year out is to learn how to apply these design principles in real life.

PER SO NAL STAT EMENT I was born and raised in a small mining town, Orkney, my aspirations have always been driven around creative and innovative work as my surrounding environment was in lack of these. I made the best with the lit tle that I had. As a devoted Christian and a Climate Activist, I have always wanted to use my passion to explore new strategies in making the world a bet ter place for all. It lead me to study architecture, which has become my vocation. During my universit y experience, I was intrigued by the study of sustainable designs, cultural narratives, public urban aesthetics and contextual sensitivit y. Exploring these interests more in the real world of architecture is a dream to me. With that said, I look for ward to becoming a Professional Architect one day.
JO B EXPER I ENC E PHOTOGRAPHER Freelancer & SOAP Photographer (Wits Universit y) | Johannesburg, GP | 2018 - 2020 It has always been my passion than my occupation. It has taught me how to see things in a creative eye. I taught myself how to add value and meaning to a product that is scrap. Photography certainly played an impact ful role in my interest in design and innovation. LOGO DESIGNER Freelancer | Johannesburg, GP | 2018 - 2020 This experience has taught me the client to designer relations. It has improved my abilities to sell a product to a client and convincing them if necessar y. Logo designing has been one of my highlight experiences as a designer. I took critical decisions to ensure the business brands of the clients were unique and successful. DAVID KRYNAUW INTERNSHIP Pod Design (META Studio)| Johannesburg, GP | 2020 ( 2 weeks) The internship program introduced me to advanced detailing of timber construction, furniture design, interior planning, small living projects. It was my fi rst offi ce experience as a designer and noticed that I had good offi ce practice skills. I look for ward to using these skills learned here in my future job experiences.

01 Manifesto
My Manifesto embodies drawings of projects done in my first and second year of study (2018 & 2019). These drawings explore different design principles used to generate concepts for my project designs. These drawings highly informed my design choice. The drawings focus on the analysis and exploration of Movement, Negative Spaces, Construction Techniques and Spatial Poetry. With the techniques having the possibility to overlap, in my third year of study (2020), I further explore these and discover new principles as I go.

Student Common Braamfontein
Braamfontein is a busy suburban area that is rich in culture and diversity. Its urbanscape is in shortage of social public areas and people end up facing the hardscapes of the busy streets. The Braamfontein Student Common aims to create a destination for the public in the middle of the dense and busy urbanscape. This is achieved by articulating the given site with a large soft-green scape which the user can interact with when approaching the building. The building mass reaches out like an arm to the pedestrian entrance of the University of the Witwatersrand to invite the students into the space. The building is layered with a concrete finish and large windows to ďŹ t into the urban aesthetic of Braamfontein.

New Spatialities in a Time of Plague Alexandra Entered for : Archdaily Pandemic Architecture Ideas Competition Open Call & WAF Isolation Transformed: Global Design Competition
The Corona virus Pandemic has not only strained the economy but has forced people to stay in their homes for long periods of time. This pandemic simply showed us that the future is unpredictable and as designers we must be able to adapt. The Alexandra High Rise as a beacon of hope for all those who inhabit informal settlements. The high rise is a structure of subtle satire as it intends to nudge at the government in order to emphasise their responsibility to supply an adequate infastructure and basic services to these overpopulated areas. Temporarily solving the micro issues of social distancing, food & water supply as well as access to safe education and medical care, but with the intention of permanently inspiring the addition of our infastructural pillars into informal settlements.

Mining Museum of Johannesburg Newtown
Johannesburg is a city that was established by the discovery of Gold. Mining has been the tool that has built the City of Johannesburg and its history cannot be forgotten. The design intention of the museum is to put the user into the context of a miner. The museum is composed of different experiences that one would experience when working in both underground and above-ground mining. The museum responds to the AXIS of Fordsburg, Workers Museum and the CBD which are now mining memorials of Johannesburg. They serve a function and tell a story and the history about mining and production industry.

Creative Hobbies
