esrakagitci@gmail.com esra.kagitci@mail.polimi.it +39 351 540 48 18 Viale Monza, 10, 20127 Milan, ITALY
I studied for my bachelor’s degree at Istanbul Technical University, and my first job experiences gathered in architecture offices as a project architect in Istanbul for almost four years, working in preliminary and construction projects. My passion for architecture and design to explore more made me Politecnico di Milano. It gave me extensive knowledge and experiences in architecture and urban design, construction and preservation projects and teamwork. It has been an incredible journey to learn more about innovative and green architecture. I have focused on bio-based materials for the building industry during my internship and thesis studies.

Exhibition spaces are devoted to be “flexible” spaces to ease the usage for artists and designers. The approach is that these spaces should not limit the installation and position of products while organizing them. Partition walls are used at minimum level to divide permanent and temporary exhibition spaces only. Materials and textures are selected neutral colors and surfaces as much as possible to be flexible in design. Walls, floors and ceilings make the interior space “silent, non-reactive, colorlessness” intensively. Thus, dominancy of interior atmosphere on design products in exhibition with materials and textures is avoided. Exhibition spaces are divided because of avoiding sun light. The selection is left to the artists and designers who will organize the spaces. Shadow plays have an interesting impact on experiences of visitors by changing the hours. Corridors are created as pretty large areas in the whole composition to serve as an extra exhibition spaces when needed. Suspended ceilings are inspired by Kunthaus Museum of Zumthor. Lighting elements does not interfere to interior spaces. Lighting bulbs hidden below covering material reflect the light thanks to the transparency of material.

Coffee Column Project in 17th Venice Biennale Architecture 2021
MATERIAL PRACTICE | Physical Experiments What we need to claim is to discover novel ways to change our mindset of waste and exploring possible design solutions through a circular economy lens. Offering design in combination with entrepreneurship is a way to add value without using more natural resources and materials. The rammed coffee project accounts for designing pure organic materials like spent coffee grounds with other bio-agricultural materials, which are being wasted in large quantities through urban environments. The total height of the column is up to 2 meters as the diameter is around 24 centimeters. The coffee itself due to its highly porous surface works pretty well in compression and hemp will provide more tensile strength to have optimum performance in both.
To sum up, regarding the ongoing coffee consumption in parallel with the global environmental crisis and waste management we need to acquire the capability of greenways to transform spent coffee grounds (SCG) to bio-materials by different applications into either architectural technology or food industry and furniture design mar kets.
