Mozart Piano Concertos Nos. 17 & 27 / Walter Klien; Minnesota Orchestra

The piano concerto was the category in which Mozart most consistently excelled. No. 17 is one of six piano concertos he composed in 1784. Scored for the same instrumentation as No. 17, No. 27 was his last piano concerto. It stands alone, because its content and character make it unique and it is deeply personal, having a feeling of subdued gravity.

Beethoven: Overtures & Incidental Music / Minnesota Orchestra

Much has been written about Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, formerly Leonore. Beethoven worked on it on and off for almost a decade. During that time the four different overtures included on this recording were composed. They are substantially different, not only in length but also in themes. On the present recording Stanislaw Skrowaczewski leads the GRAMMY Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra. (Vox Classics)

Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 / Berlin PO; Wilhelm Furtwängler

Coming between the Eroica and the C minor, the Fourth Symphony has often been regarded as a less ‘important’ work than either of those two giants. The Fourth is, in all truth, a simpler, more, delicate and contrasting work, more graceful in contour but not a shade less inventive melodically. And the Fourth has claimed its fanatic adherents – men like Berlioz, Schumann, Tovey and others. (Vox Classics)

The Lute Music of Valentin Strobel / Tobias Tietze

Lutenist Tobias Tietze already has appeared on many recordings as continuo player. On this album, everything focuses on his solo playing and creates a very intimate atmosphere for the highly idiomatic music for the baroque lute in the French style. (Arcantus)

Beethoven for Three – Symphony No. 6 / Ma; Kavakos, Ax

Like their first Beethoven for Three release — Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5 — this recording challenges the traditional boundary between chamber and orchestral repertoire to offer the listener two very different sides of the composer using the same three voices. In the C Minor piano trio, we hear Beethoven’s brilliant exploration of three instruments’ essential expressive capabilities. (Sony)
