Wu Fei & Abigail

Washburn

Wu Fei and Abigail Washburn’s duo project is as unlikely, perhaps, as it was inevitable-a manifest sonic consequence of politics and vibrations commingling across continents. There is a directness in the musical duo format that makes it such a good vehicle for melodic conversations between close friends who obviously listen to each other with an athletic respect matched by their respective virtuosity. The Parlour Piano

Listening to this album is tantamount to pulling back the drapery and looking through a window into nineteenth-century middle-class America. Compiled and performed by mezzo-soprano Dorothy Mesney with music from accomplished pianist Mynon McPherson, the album captures the feeling with which the songs were originally performed around the parlor piano or in the music hall. Tribute to a Generation

During World War II the big band music of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and others was the soundtrack of life on the homefront. This music also reached the battlefront through recordings and broadcasts where familiar tunes and bands became a metaphor for the way of life that American soldiers were fighting to preserve. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterwork Orchestra pays tribute to this musical inspiration in the World War II years. (Smithsonian Folkways)
