2 - Photosynthesis

Page 1

Thanks to photosynthesis plants can take nutrients from air and soil and they can make food on their own, using solar energy.

Animals are not able to produce food, so they depend on plants for nutrition.

To make their food plants need CO2 from air, water, some minerals from the soil and solar energy. With these simple ingredients all vegetables can make their food, essentially they produce sugar.

This chemical reaction produces also oxygen that the plants release to the air.

Like all other animals we have many special factories inside our cells: the mitochondria. Here we break carbon-carbon links inside the sugar molecules, using atmospheric oxygen: this breakage releases energy, that we use for our needs, and CO2.

Plants, thanks to photosynthesis, transfer to us and all animals energy from the sun. For this reason they are considered the foundations of the ecosystems

After this fantastic travel inside the microscopic world, we have to reflect on the importance of photosynthesis on a global scale.

CARBON

Forests and soils on Earth are a living reservoir of carbon and they are very important because they regulate the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide.

SOIL

A very important role is played also by microscopic algae, ancestors of plants, that live in oceans, lake and rivers.

Many years ago, some 100-200 millions of years past, the world was covered by forests, the climate was very hot and plants grew luxuriantly.

In this environment vegetation was so abundant that dead plants formed WKLFN OD\HUV RI RUJDQLF PDWWHU ÂŹ

During millions of years this organic matter was covered by sediments and then transformed by bacteria into coal.

This process is called fossilization and this is why we have now a lot of coal deposits all around the world.
