SKILLS
HOBBIES Ultimate frisbee, screen printing, graphic design, traveling, languages LANGUAGE Basic knowledge of Spanish, French, Danish Curiosity is rewarded with discovery. “This is where it started.” I had made it all the way to Paris and was standing at the corner of the Cardo Maximus and Decumanus of the original Roman foundations of the city. One day I was standing at the crux of Paris urban development, and the next day, while exploring the city by foot, I stumbled upon Passage Brady, a hidden Parisian alleyway filled with cafes and delicious restaurants. I had never lived in Paris before, and every day seemed to show me something new. The wide variety of French cheeses is astonishing. And they were delicious. I guess you could say I am curious about what I don’t know. As it turns out, there’s a lot that I don’t know. The architecture profession is continuously looking for individuals with a breadth of experiences, using the logic that designers are better able to create when they can draw from what they’ve been directly exposed to. My curiosity has reinforced this, and led me to discover a number of different interests: scenic design, ultimate frisbee, Indian food, train travel, living in Washington, DC, industrial architecture. Travel leads to experience, of course, but is always an experience in itself; it’s fascinating to navigate to a new place, to physically experience the new locale, to unfasten curiosity, and to discover. For years, I have been researching and experimenting with how to transform historical buildings into new spaces. Reusing the existing infrastructure is going to continue to be a key sustainable design practice, and Havana, with its weathered but resilient urban fabric, is an opportunity to test what I’ve learned about building transformation in a new culture; one that I have always been curious about. So, why Cuba? Cuba is extremely ripe for revitilization. The country is on the verge of a huge economic shift with the removal of the US embargo. I intent to focus my building transformation thesis research in Havana, using an existing building shell to house a program that will navigate the impending pressures of globalization. Using existing building shells and municipal framework, the program will be able to support the local communities through the increasing influence from the United States. I’ve arranged to join an architectural people-to-people tour of Havana this coming summer. The scheduled events will introduce me to the people I’ll be designing with and for in my thesis research. I will hear their stories and their needs, and strengthen my language skills. I’ll also be recording and sketching my experiences while I conduct an extended site visit. What has been their life experience? What are their fears? What do they value? What future do they see for Cuba? How do they feel about the United States? Hearing their stories will contribute to a richer learning experience and a broader community-focused design for my thesis.
