“From the middle of the middle of me, to the middle of the middle of you.” - Brother Blue The Center for Folklore, Storytelling and Oral History is a medley of voices; some heavy and serious, others light and comical. Each story spoken behind its walls weave together the communities and people of the world. Through each other’s eyes we are able to find new perspectives and ideas. Located on NYC’s Bowery, the Folklore Center blends the traditions of storytelling in local cultures. A never-ending database of personal stories is collected at the Folklore Center, which also accommodates all types of live performance. The Center facilitates sharing and listening through various sized gathering places, from intimate settings to a large black box grand theatre. All storytelling spaces are linked together by the personal story recording booths located on a circulating, ramping path. The cyclical nature derives itself from the construction of Navajo stories. There is no beginning, middle or end, but events occurring along a cyclical path. Lessons learned along the way repeat and the listener grasps on to meanings as their own story requires.

Building Elevation. Storytelling ramp is clad in wood siding, while larger programs are cast in place concrete. The facade sits similarly with existing buildings along the bowery in NYC. (Hand drawn graphite on paper, collaged and rendered in Photoshop)

“Dance is the hidden language of the soul. - Martha Graham Spirituality is the string that links traditional Indian dance to architecture. Traditionally, dances were held in temples. It is in these hospitable spaces that stories of the ancestors and gods came to life through dance. They required a high degree of intimacy between the performer and audience. Kinesics, or non-linguistic body movements, communicated such narratives. Every intricate hand, eye and foot movement had meaning and told a part of that story. In a flick of the wrist or piercing eye glance, the dancers would unravel their tales. The delicate movements were deliberate and uncompromisingly precise. The Ahmedabad Dance Hall serves as a way to expose and utilize the intimate relationship required for traditional Indian dance. In order to embrace this, each seating section channels the viewer to re-create the closeness of temples. The theatre space shapes the relationship between dancer and audience. Each has specific, unique quality. It is though these spaces the audience is able to discover what it truly means to view an Indian dance performance.

Master Plan of Masdar City “B located to the south east of the famous zero carbon, zero waste city. Neighbourhoods centred around light rail and wind tunnel intersection.

(Rendered and annotated with graphite on AutoCAD underlay printed on Stonehenge 90lb white)

“Growth is inevitable and desirable, but destruction of community character is not.” - Edward McMahon Masdar City “B” is located in the desert of Abu Dhabi, EAU. The city is intended to be the sister city for Masdar, which is currently under construction. All systems within this development are interdependent to create a self sustaining ecosystem. The strategies progress from large scale master planning to apartment development in order to maximize efficiency. The heart of the city occurs at the intersection of the light rail and wind tunnel, creating a central core. Wind tunnels and towers utilize natural breezes to cool down streets. Main programmatic elements surround the core: shopping, restaurants, and main community center’s. Housing developments overlap sectionally to utilize shade on secondary and tertiary streets. Neighborhoods have access to semi-public tools like covered street markets, creating a sense of ownership and community. On the private scale, clusters within the neighborhoods have overlapping units to create covered terraces and marshrabeya covered windows for shade and privacy.
