TEMPORARY ROOTS hostel + community center MArch thesis Is there an architecture that can give travelers a sense of belonging by integration into a community? Solo travelers can feel lonely and unwelcome in new locations they’re visiting. There is a cultural disconnect, sometimes a language barrier, or a lack of familiarity with the location. Traditionally, travelers book a hotel, spend a few days seeing the main tourist sites alone or with a travel partner, then leave for the next location. These travelers have little interaction with the local residences, miss out on specific locations and information that makes the city what it is or how it came to be. These travelers rarely make an impact on the place they’re visiting. This can often lead to travelers gain homesickness and ultimately lose the feeling of fulfillment traveling brings to one’s life. As humans, we gain the most fulfillment through our communities that give us a sense of belonging, a will to live, a purpose in this life. Do travelers have a sense of belonging then? Can a city provide this through architecture? The site is located at 1825 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, PA. It’s a central location of the main tourist attractions in Center City, especially the Ben Franklin Parkway home to many museums. The site is adjacent to a wide range of locations such as a community college, apartments, senior living, retail and commercial establishments, a free library, public transportation, and possibly the next phase of the Rail Park project. The lot is approximately 1.2 acres.

Shared Housing

HOME GROWN fighting food insecurity
Comprehensive Studio at Roger Williams University consists of complete documentation of the project including a black and white set of construction drawings. Semester work included conceptual context as well as technical solutions, designing mechanical and structural systems for the project. This urban agricultural education center includes a black sheep program of housing because of the high residential area in Woodlawn, Chicago directly southeast of University of Chicago’s campus along South Cottage Grove Ave. A high amount of research into Chicago, urban farming systems, and climate conditions was conducted to discover the amount of food insecurity in the area. Housing became the black sheep in order to directly attack this food insecurity challenge and to add to housing developments popping up around the area. The familiarity in scale and look of the project became the driving concept, while allowing flexibility through public, classroom, and growing spaces. Students, family, or staff can reside in the units to of this diverse community. The individual blocks are designed in a way so that they can begin to populate other empty parcels, continuing to lessen the food insecurity problem.

BATH OF SELF SEARCH With an increase in awareness of mental health and happiness, having a space where one can feel at peace, tranquil, and like themselves is as important as ever. This public bathhouse in Vals, Switzerland can be that space, by providing services that assist a guest in achieving that tranquility. A common and effective activity that many use to reach a stronger mindbody connection is yoga, especially the meditation aspect. At this bathhouse, there are plenty of spaces that allow for private and group yoga and meditation sessions, as well as private baths for a more personal reflection on life. This is process and final documentation for Arch 515 Studio at Roger Williams University.

BORDERS AND TRAVERSES el chamizal revival
This studio project directly challenges perhaps one of the biggest debates of the present the border between Mexico and the United States of America. In Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, the Rio Grande follows the border and is a constant reminder to both cities of the history of the border. The shifting river path throughout history created an area known as “Cordova Island” or “El Chamizal” and it is the no-crossing zone developed in this studio. The goal in creating this area as a no-crossing zone for the citizens of both adjacent cities is to unite the two, to return to the past area’s fluidity and bring back the community and friendship that was once shared. The area consists of residential communities, schools, plenty of sports and recreation parks, monuments, and museums. One way to bring two sides together is via a common goal is a project each can share. This region of Texas and Mexico is very dry, production of crops and produce has declined. All over the world this issue has been addressed by Hydroponic Gardening in green houses in order to provide food to regions that can’t farm traditionally or are dense urban cities. The two communities can then share and sell the surplus of produce with a food and commerce market that includes vendor stations, outdoor seating, recreation event space, an educational kitchen, outdoor park areas, and the hydroponic green houses. The market is the link to both sides as a pedestrian overpass sitting in between the Rio Grande, allowing for the citizens of Texas and Mexico to reconnect with each other as well as the literal border itself via the ramping and winding market.

ARS AEVI MUSEUM bringing a contemporary art collection home
During the Siege of Sarajevo in Bosnia in the mid 1990s, an idea for a museum of contemporary art was born, but setting the location needed to be postponed due to the Siege. Through the 1990s and 2000s, curators at various locations invited artists from around the world to contribute their work. This studio was to design the museum that will hold the entire collection in Sarajevo. Our site is directly adjacent to the City Center and the bridge where the first victims of the Siege were killed, Admira and Bosko, commonly known as the Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo. The site includes a memorial in the couple’s memory. The building design resembles the Ars Aevi logo in form and in meaning of continual movement towards progress and a relationship between positive and negative forces. The facade and site pathways are designed as a continuation of the memorial’s intersecting forms. Sustainability features include a white roof for maximum sun reflection, south facing glazing for passive solar, a green roof, translucent windows for natural lighting in gallery spaces, and a ventilation system.

ROUND-A-BOUT CAMPUS florence, italy master plan At the Lorenzo de Medici Institute in Florence, Italy, I took a Sustainability Architecture course. The main project called for a redesign of an outside market site into a student residential area and community center. The “Tiny Dorm, created to care to the needs of two architecture students, would be a passable, sustainable home. It included the design of a kitchen island that could be transformed into two drafting tables. The site includes a study space, laundromat, gym, and supply store for the students. The public functions are a coffee shop, restaurant, clothing store, and grocery store, as well as outdoor spaces for children, dogs, and picnic gatherings. There is a clear path to a revived train stop and bus stop. The two come together by a central round-a-bout, to mirror the street traffic flow, where a gallery space for the students to present their work to the public is placed in the center.

GARDEN CONSERVATORY poetry center
One of the interesting aspects of Amherst, Massachusetts is that it was the home town of Emily Dickinson, a famous poet alive in the 1800s. She was a writer of intellectual curiosity, emotional intensity, and of human experiences. She was very fond of her home, which is now a museum on Main Street. She wrote most of her poems here, mostly about nature. Emily’s residence included a garden conservatory, a space that was essential to her writing. In order to honor this aspect of Emily’s life and passion, the poetry center programmed on the corner of Main Street and Dickinson Street will be a conservatory which includes outdoor spaces and gardens for visitors to connect with nature while experiencing poetry. The program of the poetry center includes reading rooms with private conservatories, a book store, a cafe with plenty of seating, a forum for presentations and lectures, outdoor seating and gardens, meeting rooms, private listening rooms, and staff offices.
