India’s First, Bradman’s 100th This wonderful photo from an Australian XI v India match at the SCG in 1947 captures the moment Don Bradman pushes a single to bring up his 100th first class century. ‘The Don’ remains the only Australian batsman to reach the milestone. It was a milestone tour for the Indians as well – their first to Australia and their first anywhere as a newly independent nation. Umpire George Borwick souvenired the ball from Bradman’s famous feat, and it will make its way to the SCG Museum this summer as part of a new exhibition commemorating famous contests at the ground between these two nations. Visit the exhibition during the January Test against India. The museum opens each day until the end of the tea break.

From the CEO NSW Waratahs sensation Israel Folau has a premiership in his grasp, now it’s over to his superstar neighbours Lance Franklin (Sydney Swans) and Sonny Bill Williams (Sydney Roosters). The Swans and the Roosters were entrenched near the top of their respective tables as ATG was going to press, the Swans setting the pace in the AFL and the Roosters aiming to be the first NRL team to go back-to-back since 1993.

the Sydney Swans boosted their crowds by 23 per cent at the SCG as fans were inspired by a club record 12 victories in a row, a winning streak last seen during the 1935 season; among the highlights were Franklin kicking a stunning 70-metre goal, the club’s largest SCG crowd for more than a decade (41,317 v Port Adelaide) and the Swans defeating premiership heavyweights Geelong by more than 100 points on a stunning night at the SCG; the Australia v France rugby Test attracted an Allianz Stadium record rugby crowd of 43,188 as Australia completed a series clean sweep;

significant days at the Sydney SwansGWS Giants match at the end of June. Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Premier Mike Baird, Federal Sports Minister Peter Dutton and NSW Sport and Recreation Minister Stuart Ayres officially opened the SCG’s MA Noble, Don Bradman and Dally Messenger stands. The $197 million project took two years to finish, employed more than 3200 workers and now, with our busiest summer of cricket ever looming, is complete, on time and on budget. The new stands have significantly improved the experience of a day at the footy or the cricket. In-seat ordering has been up and running since the first Swans home match for Doyles Seafood and bar outlets on levels one and two. At each event, more and more of our Members are taking advantage of it to make their SCG experience more enjoyable.

In August, the Trust announced it would fund the $10 million extension of the ‘connected stadium’ solution to Allianz Stadium as a matter of the highest priority. It’s a vital next step in upgrading Allianz Stadium, and one that will help the sports and teams based there and every one of the hundreds of thousands of fans who attend each year. One Test, three ODIs and four of the world’s best are heading to the SCG.

Hard hitting action: Hashim Amla and Alastair Cook will lead the ODI challenge from South Africa and England

Huge Summer of Cricket Looms The SCG is gearing up for one of its biggest summers of cricket ever, with Australia coming here to take on three of the sport’s strongest nations in Tests and ODIs before the carnival of the World Cup. South Africa opens the international action with an ODI against the Aussies in November. Then Australia face the challenge of India in the traditional January Test, before hosting them and England in two further day-night games as part of an ODI tri-series in January. The Australia v India ODI promises to be a passionate, patriotic affair, with the match being played on a special national day for both countries – Australia Day and India’s Republic Day. These two teams are the top two ranked sides for ODIs so this game matters, especially with the World Cup starting the following month. The Indians last SCG Test was memorable for being the ground’s milestone 100th in 4

2012, but it also rewrote the history books in many other ways.

India’s young stars beat them at home in last year’s ODI series.

It was when Michael Clarke hit the SCG’s highest Test score and first triple century (329 not out). Along the way, the Australian captain set two new batting partnership records against India – first with Ricky Ponting on day two (288), before bettering that with Mike Hussey (334) on day three.

The ODIs against South Africa and England will have the spice of being the first time Australia has faced these sides since comprehensively beating them in last summer’s Ashes series and the South African tour earlier this year.

Ponting and Hussey have since hung up their baggy greens, and the Indians have likewise bid farewell to two of their greatest cricket legends in VVS Laxman and ‘the little master’, Sachin Tendulkar.

Our bumper cricket season also features a host of domestic fixtures including the One Day Cup final on Sunday 26 October, NSW Sheffield Shield games against South Australia and Queensland and four Sydney Sixers Big Bash League matches. And that is before the World Cup begins in February.

Cricket fans will find it fascinating to see how these two sides match up in the Test arena with their latest generations of talent. Australia are the all-conquering Ashes heroes, while

The SCG will host five matches in the sport’s premier 50-over tournament, including a semi-final, a quarter-final and Australia’s clash with Sri Lanka.

They add some new spice to what promises to be one huge multicultural carnival of cricket. As well as the finals and pool games mentioned above, the SCG will also be the scene for three warm-up games involving Pakistan, England, West Indies and Scotland.

Watson said topping the rankings has given the Australians belief they can become just the second host nation in the tournament’s 40-year history to claim the cherished prize.

“ODI cricket has never been more competitive with the top eight sides being currently separated by only 21 rating points,” he said.

Almost lost amid the glory of their Ashes series victory last summer was recognition for Australia beating England in the ODI games almost as comprehensively (4 – 1).

“It’s an exciting time to be part of the Australian team. To be part of a transition phase that now has us playing quality cricket against the best teams in the world is fantastic,” Watson said.

That lifted them to number one in the world ODI rankings and, with home soil advantage, they will be gunning to maintain that form and reclaim the title they last held in 2007.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson agrees Australia is one of the World Cup favourites but predicts a close competition, with little indication in recent form to separate the frontrunners.

Tickets for the ICC Cricket World Cup are available via Ticketek or online at www.cricketworldcup.com. Swans Roll on Record

The Sydney Swans head into the September finals action on the back of their best form since 1935, pulling off a club record-equalling winning streak of 12 consecutive matches. Within that they accounted for all other top title-contenders including Port Adelaide, Geelong, Hawthorn and Fremantle. Sydney AFL fans began sniffing the premiership air and have responded, with huge crowds packing the SCG home games. The win over the then ladder-leading Port Adelaide in June was witnessed by the biggest AFL attendance at the ground since 1999. More than 41,300 fans went delirious as Buddy Franklin slotted five secondhalf goals, including a monster from 70 metres, to help his team home against the Power by four points. Adam Goodes: continues to inspire

Franklin told reporters after the game that the Swans faithful generated just as much noise as a packed MCG, which has a capacity of 100,000. “I think so,” Franklin said. “On a smaller ground, having 41,000 screaming for you

and the team is something very special.” In our summer edition, ATG labelled Buddy as the “recruitment coup of the AFL offseason”. It took him and his teammates a few games to click, but he has since lived up to the highest expectations. Bursting out of packs to bomb long goals from the tightest of angles has become his trademark in red and white. As strong as his influence has been up forward, the Swans’ performance this year has been down to more than him. Their defence, with the likes of Ted Richards and Heath Grundy, are the misers of the league. Co-captains Jarrad McVeigh and Kieren Jack have continued to lead well from the midfield alongside Benny McGlynn who has flourished in the centre of the park since moving from his forward role. And Adam Goodes might not be able to play the minutes he once did, but he continues to be as inspirational on the field as he is off it as Australian of the Year and spokesperson for the Recognise campaign. Buddy’s five goals in the Power game came after the 34-year-old

Goodes got the momentum rolling with three of his own in the second quarter. The proud Adnyamathanha man also became the game’s most prodigious indigenous player this season, breaking former Crow Andrew McLeod’s 341-match record. McLeod said he couldn’t think of a better person to have broken his record. “He’s one of those magical players who every time he steps onto the field you know he’s going to produce something incredible, and he’s done that more times than not over his career,” McLeod said. Having missed last year’s finals through injury, the club will be hoping to have Goodes’ experience on board this September. They credit the influence of their senior players in the development of their “next generation” – the likes of Luke Parker, Harry Cunningham and Jake Lloyd who have taken their performances to new levels this year.

The reigning premiers have given themselves a crack at another title, as they prepare for their second consecutive season of finals action. That sort of consistency has been a rarity in recent years, and answers what coach Trent Robinson called for in the February edition of ATG. “We don’t want to have one good year and one bad year,” he said pre-season. “We want to be a top team year after year.”

Farewell finals: SBW keen to leave NRL on a high

The Sydney Roosters are under no illusions about the difficulty of winning back-to-back titles. No club has achieved it in the NRL era. They highlight that maintaining performance levels isn’t enough, and that the top sides are the ones that keep improving. Captain Anthony Minichiello believes that’s something they didn’t achieve early in 2014, but their form is progressing to new levels at the right time. “We had a slower start to the season than we would have liked, and were probably a bit underdone with players coming back at different stages after World Cup commitments,” he said. “We’ve been there, or thereabouts, for most of the season but we pride ourselves on our standards and as we get to the business end of the season, it’s time for us to take that step up if we’re to challenge in September.” Minichiello has announced he will retire at the end of the season. He is on track for a new personal milestone before he goes, with the possibility of recording his 300th match during the finals and challenging Luke Ricketson’s 301-game club record. Naturally a lot of the finals attention will focus on star forward Sonny Bill Williams, who will be determined to go out on a high in his final NRL season, but the team’s ability to step up for September will also be bolstered by the return of Daniel Tupou. The dangerous winger has personified the club’s ambitions by going from strength to strength and was rewarded with State of Origin selection. Unfortunately, he

10

WINTER 2014

sustained a torn back muscle in Origin 3 and missed a string of late season games. Hoooker Jake Friend is another that the Roosters will be looking to for a big September. He has continued to develop on his excellent 2013 season, and was recognised as ‘best on the field’ in two of their highest-profile matches since – the World Cup Challenge win against Wigan Warriors and the ANZAC Cup victory over the Dragons. Other significant improvers have included Aidan Guerra, who also gained Origin selection and has brought that experience and confidence back to club level. The Roosters have been similarly impressed with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck’s speed and footwork, and list Sam Moa as being among the game’s leading forwards every week. No matter what individual players can achieve under finals pressure, the Roosters think they can unleash a major advantage if their defence can recreate the intensity that delivered a record six shut-outs last season. There have been glimpses of what media dubbed the “Bondi Wall” last year, perhaps most notably in the round 19 Allianz Stadium win that knocked the Panthers off the top of the table. That sent a timely pre-finals reminder to the other top contenders of what the Roosters are capable of in the “business end of the season”. Welcome return: Daniel Tupou

World’s Best Technology for Allianz Stadium Allianz Stadium is in line for a $10 million technology upgrade that will deliver spectators advanced Wi-Fi and a vast new internet protocol TV network in time for the 2015 NRL season, early Super Rugby games and the A-League finals. The upgrade will make the stadium one of the most technologically advanced sporting venues in the world, mirroring the services Members and media are starting to enjoy in the SCG’s new stands. SCG Trust Chief Executive Jamie Barkley said the move was the next phase of the ‘connected stadium’ solution planned for the entire precinct that would revolutionise fans’ match day experience. “Imagine walking in to Allianz Stadium and your smartphone alerts you to a free seat upgrade offer,” Mr Barkley said.

“Or being sent a food and drink voucher as a thank you for turning up to your third consecutive NSW Waratahs, Sydney Roosters or Sydney FC match. That technology is months, not years away.”

that younger fans leave venues if they can’t access social media to post updates, and our advice is that local behavioural trends are quickly following suit,” he said.

Fans will be able to access the Trust’s high density Wi-Fi network to use social media and keep up to date with statistics, replays and editorial content, all in real-time, highdefinition on the latest smartphones and tablets. They will also be able to order food and beverages from their seat, just as they can in the SCG’s new stands and be notified when their order is ready to be collected from dedicated express lanes.

By utilising the full capacity of the connected solution, the Trust will join world leading sporting organisations such as Real Madrid, New York’s Barclays Center, Cowboys Stadium in Dallas and the Staples Center in Los Angeles in assisting teams to manage venue theming, content and interactive experiences from a centralised control point.

SCG Trust General Manager (Strategy and Projects) Piers Thompson said when the connected stadium solution is extended to Allianz Stadium, it will match world’s best practice, if not exceed it.

ARU General Manager Andrew Fagan said rugby fans viewed connectivity as a key part of their match day experience.

Dine Nobly at the SCG The Members’ Dining Room in the new MA Noble Stand opened for pre-match lunches and dinners in June, and it’s proved a popular option with Members. With some tempting a la carte dishes created by the SCG’s own Master Chef, George Fouskarinis, an impressive Australian and international wine list and complimentary reserved seats included with every booking, there has been strong demand for tables throughout the latter half of the Swans season. George’s menu during the winter football season has included the likes of slow roasted lamb shoulder, pan-seared salmon and apple and camembert stuffed chicken breast. There are always some special options for kids. He will soon be working on some new seasonal creations for the coming summer of cricket. Closer to the time, we’ll send you details of how to reserve your table for the cricket via the new online reservations page on the Trust website - www.sydneycricketground. com.au/membership/members-dining.

You can also hire the 600-seat dining room for private and corporate events on non-match days, along with a host of other unique spaces in the new stands. The SCG Events team has begun taking bookings for the Brewers Pavilion (ideal for cocktail events of 150 to 600 people), the Skyline Terrace on the roof of the stands (which can cater for up to 1,000 guests) and for larger events up to 2,500 people there is the Sydney Live Plaza at the back of the stands where the Village Green was set up during the last Test. That list adds to around 20 other venue options around our grounds available for hire, ranging from the Members Pavilion Long Bar to the Allianz Stadium Trust Suite. Check out the SCG Events website - www.scgevents.com.au - to explore your options or call (02) 9085 7738 to discuss your specific needs.

Bypass Queues with Mobile Ordering Another food and drink option that’s been introduced in the new stands recently is placing your order from your seat using your mobile phone. Patrons sitting in the Don Bradman or MA Noble stands can place their order online by logging into the stands’ complimentary Wi-Fi network. You simply follow the links on the log-in page, make your selection and enter your credit card details for payment. A receipt will be displayed on your phone to present at the designated collection point at the bar or food store – allowing you to bypass the regular queue! So far, two bars (those on levels 1 and 2 closest to the Dally Messenger Stand end) and the Doyles seafood store in the food court are offering the new system. Eventually this will be expanded to more outlets. Alcohol may only be purchased if you are over 18, and proof of age may be requested.

Sixers to Fire in ‘SCG Cauldron’ The Sydney Sixers return to light up the SCG this summer with most of the squad that thrilled us with an almost unbelievable string of close finishes last season. It was tension and drama whenever the men in magenta took to the turf. They played the Big Bash League’s first Super Over decider after finishing level with the Scorchers at the SCG, and won five games by seven runs or less or within the final over. These guys were the ‘down to the wire’ specialists, finishing their season at the SCG needing a six off the final ball to progress to the BBL final. Ultimately, the gallant Brett Lee was unable to deliver the fairytale ending, and once again the Scorchers proved to be their nemesis by the narrowest of margins. Lee returns this season for another crack at domestic T20 glory along with a familiar group blending international experience and successful track records in the short form of the game. Captain Brad Haddin also returns to the dynamic Sixers line-up, as does Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Michael Lumb, Nic Maddinson, Nathan Lyon and destructive all-rounder Moises Henriques. There were more names to come as ATG was going to press, with the Sixers still having roster spots for an additional wicketkeeper, bowler and international player. Henriques recently spoke of his excitement for the start of BBL 04, and welcomed the more compact season

The Sixers’ season starts (as the school holidays do on the Friday night before Christmas) at the SCG against the Melbourne Renegades – one of the busiest teams in the off-season with several new high-profile signings. “The Renegades will give us a strong challenge,” Henriques said. “It’s good that we are playing them at home.” The Melbourne franchise have picked up batsman Callum Ferguson who is bidding for a spot in the Australian T20 squad. He joins other new signings Matthew Wade and Jesse Ryder who are established T20 internationals for Australia and New Zealand respectively. The Renegades are also in negotiations with Muthiah Muralidaran’s management about getting the master off-spinner to return for another season. Hostilities resume against the Perth Scorchers next as they visit the SCG between Christmas and New Year. “They have been great rivals with us since the first BBL final, and every game since has been an absolute cracker,” said Henriques. Hot on the heels of the January Test action, the Sixers are back at the SCG

for the next incarnation of the ‘Sydney Smash’ against the cross-town Thunder. Sixers’ crowds grew by more than 50% last season, and a big attendance with lots of atmosphere is expected at this traditional battle for bragging rights. The Adelaide Strikers are another team that has been busy in the player market and they come to the SCG for the first time for the Sixers final game of the regular season. “Hopefully bringing them to the cauldron of the SCG, where we like to play and where we like to think of as our fortress, it will be a completely new challenge for them,” said Henriques. You can get the family geared up for all the coming Big Bash cricket action by coming to the Sydney Sixers’ Fan Day being planned for November. Expect plenty of activities for kids and adults, and opportunities to meet the players. New signings: Marc Janko and Bernie Ibini

Sky Blues New Sydney FC Head Coach Graham Arnold has made his intentions clear for the upcoming A-League season by recruiting numerous fresh attacking options. The new faces are an interesting blend of youth and experience, with Arnold himself bringing plenty of the latter.

Janko, recruited from Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig, has an impressive European CV and a prodigious goalscoring record – finding the net every second game for club and country.

He has a pedigree as one of the most successful coaches in the A-League, winning two titles with the Central Coast Mariners, as well as leading the Socceroos at the 2007 Asian Cup and being part of the coaching staff for two World Cup campaigns.

He has won league championships in Portugal (with Porto) and Austria (Red Bull Salzburg), as well as the Dutch Cup and Super Cup with FC Twente.

His biggest signing (quite literally) is the 196cm Austrian striker Marc Janko as the club’s international marquee.

“At 6 foot 5 he will cause a lot of problems for opposition defenders and he will give us a different threat up front,” said Arnold. “I have come here to win trophies and play in the Asian Champions League and I am confident that I will achieve this with Sydney FC,” said the Austrian skipper. Another of Arnold’s new signings, Shane Smeltz, has similar silverware ambitions and also brings World Cup experience to the club. The Kiwi striker famously scored first in his country’s draw with Italy at the 2010 tournament. But Arnold will have been more attracted by Smeltz’s domestic goal-scoring record – hitting the net 77 times in seven seasons to twice win the A-League’s Golden Boot and become its second-highest all-time scorer.

On the Road in One Direction

British boy band sensation One Direction looks like they will have a capacity crowd atmosphere for their two Allianz Stadium concerts in February. After an enormous response from fans to the original Saturday night event on 7 February (including from the Trust Member pre-sale), promoters quickly added an additional concert for the following night. As ATG was going to press, very few tickets remained for the Saturday concert and the last remaining ones for Sunday were being snapped up quickly. Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan,

Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne are heading in this direction as part of their On the Road Again Australian tour. Fans can expect songs from their multiplatinum albums, Midnight Memories, Take Me Home and Up All Night. In particular, the release of Midnight Memories last year established them as a global phenomenon. Sales of their third album rocketed them to ‘biggest selling act in the world’ status.

It went to number one in more than 30 countries worldwide, and they became the only band to have their first three albums debut at the top of the US Billboard 200 Chart. It’s been a fast track to success for the boys who finished third in the 2010 X Factor TV series in Britain. Check the Ticketek website for remaining tickets.

Sweet victory: Tahs celebrate first title

Tahs Claim “We want to play our way, lay this identity down and let our supporters enjoy that”

It was a sweet victory 19 years in the making, but Michael Cheika’s Waratahs delivered NSW their maiden Super Rugby title at their third final attempt. The win was made sweeter by the one-point margin gained in the last minute over their trans-Tasman nemesis, the Crusaders, who had defeated them in both their previous finals. The title was built on the back of a record season in which the Waratahs went undefeated at home at Allianz Stadium. They turned the ground into their home fortress, winning all seven games there including the semi-final victory over the Brumbies.

Top tally: Bernard Foley scored 252 points this season

That match may have started a new tradition with the crowd chanting “New South Wales, New South Wales” in time with the ground’s LED screens. When Waratahs veteran Wycliff Palu spoke of how it lifted his side, fans repeated the treatment at the final.

Super Rugby Crown The Waratahs not only claimed the minor premiership, they did it with a league record 13 wins. Along the way they scored more season points than any other team and delivered the best defence stats. Bernard Foley was the competition’s leading points scorer, with a tally of 252 for the season. That effort has etched his name into the club records but he will be best remembered for the 45m penalty goal in the final that grabbed back the lead for his side in the dying moments. “I was hitting them well all night and it was probably right on my distance,” Foley said. “I had to give it my all and the rugby gods were on our side.” Foley was quick to praise more mortal influences on the club’s success such as the attacking running game introduced by Cheika when he took over the coaching two years ago.

“Playing our style of game can be a risk, but sometimes it pays off and it was a major part of us going undefeated at home,” Foley said.

Denis’s place in the team was filled by the experienced Stephen Hoiles and he formed a combination with Hooper and Tahs undefeated in the absence of their injured skipper. After the final victory, Hooper immediately paid tribute to the role of his predecessor in their successful season. “We wouldn’t have been here without Dave,” Hooper said. “He was in with us for 17 rounds. World Champs Stake Claim as Best Ever

The World Cup champion Kangaroos came to Allianz Stadium in May for a replay of the Old Trafford final that earnt them the title over the Kiwis a few months earlier. The result was eventually repeated too, meaning this squad equals the most successful in Australian rugby league history, but not before the young New Zealand team with six debutants threatened an ANZAC Test upset. Drama and tension built across the stadium as the Kiwis raced in three early tries to claim a shock 18-12 halftime lead. ‘Shock’ might be an understatement. Not only did it defy recent form, all the prematch commentary about a New Zealand side weakened by injury and inexperience, and betting odds of 7 to 1, it went against trans-Tasman history at this ground. There have been five meetings of these teams at Allianz Stadium and it’s been a landslide to the home nation each time. The closest New Zealand have come to defeating Australia here came in the 2006 Tri-Nations final when Darren Lockyer scored in extra time to earn his side a 16-12 win. In what is often described as one of the most gripping Test matches ever played, the game only progressed

to golden point when the video referee denied a try to Johnathan Thurston in the dying seconds. However, in the latest encounter, the Kiwi dream proved short-lived. The Australians restored dominance after the break to hold their opponents scoreless and run out 30-18 victors. Australian captain Cameron Smith put the win down to experience and said his team were determined to maintain the record that puts them among the best of all time. “In the end I thought the old heads in our side showed their composure and showed their pride in the jersey that we were wearing. We didn’t concede a point in the second half and that was through determination and effort to make sure we continue what we have built over the past couple of years. I think we showed why we are a champion side and we came through in the end.” The ANZAC Test win was Australia’s 16th international victory in a row, equalling the

record set by Kangaroos sides between 1979 and 1983. That era included the ‘Invincibles’ squad that toured Britain with the likes of Wally Lewis, Mal Meninga, Peter Sterling, Brett Kenny, Ray Price, Steve Rogers, Steve Mortimer and Wayne Pearce. The opportunity for the current Kangaroos to go one better will come in October when these teams meet again in Brisbane for their opening matches of the Four Nations. Wallabies Put French to Guillotine Members packed Allianz Stadium in June to see the Wallabies continue the revival they hope to take into next year’s World Cup. A stadium record rugby crowd of 43,188 witnessed the 39-13 win over France, which reverses the 33-6 humbling handed out by Les Bleus just two years ago in Paris. It also continues the form displayed by the Wallabies late in 2013 when they won the final four Tests of the European spring tour. The significance of following up that tour with a home series whitewash wasn’t lost on Wallabies captain Michael Hooper. “Seven wins in a row is something I’ve never been a part of in Super Rugby or previously with the Test team in my career,” Hooper said. His Waratahs teammates stole the limelight in front of the enthusiastic Sydney crowd. Wycliff Palu was named man of the match, Bernard Foley made the most of almost every opportunity, Israel Folau added another two tries to his international record and giant lock Will Skelton made a debut so impressive he is being touted as a World Cup “secret weapon”.

and again in the second half when he set up Folau to cross. The 22-year-old modestly played down credit for the assist afterwards by saying “when Izzy calls for the ball you give it to him”. “We’re a pretty close-knit team at the Tahs and those little combinations help when you’re out there. It was a lot easier to play with a few of the Waratahs boys out there,” Skelton said. Members also enjoyed the off-field action in the Saturday afternoon sunshine, with many arriving early to take advantage of the ARU Fan Day activities at the SCG. While the kids tested their strength on the horizontal rugby bungee, adults could enjoy the bars and food outlets surrounding the large screen set up on the Sydney Live Plaza. Also popular were the dining options offered at Azure, and the pre and postmatch entertainment at the Club XV sports bar in the indoor centre and Rugby Maison on the Azure terrace.

Like yesteryear: Rabbitohs and Dragons battle it out on SCG turf

Evoking our Heritage Our newest home teams, the Rabbitohs and the Dragons, returned to our grounds for two of the biggest events on the NRL calendar this year. The Dragons featured in both, taking on South Sydney at the SCG for the Heritage Round before returning for the traditional ANZAC Cup clash at Allianz Stadium against the Roosters. Unfortunately for St George Illawarra fans, they lost both. But even if you don’t want to remember the results, the games created and revived some other great memories.

Most notably for South Sydney fans it was the scene of their last grand final win in 1971 (against the Dragons). For the Red V faithful it was where they won their unequalled 11 consecutive titles from 1956, including the famous 1965 win (over the Rabbitohs) that attracted a crowd of 78,056 that is still an SCG record.

It ended as a second SCG win for South Sydney, and a game in which the winners laid out their premiership credentials against the previous favourites. Captain Greg Inglis clearly appreciated not only the result but also the special atmosphere evoked by the SCG. “It’s hallowed ground, it’s sacred ground, and it’s incredible for two old school rivals to come here and play. What a game it was,” Inglis said.

SCG Ballpark a Huge Hit

Full house: fans flock to see the MLB superstars downunder

Sydney embraced Major League Baseball in March, with more than 76,000 fans packing the SCG for the two games of the 2014 MLB Opening Series. It was sports history in the making as the LA Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks played the first competitive MLB games in the southern hemisphere. History will record that the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 3-1 in the Saturday night game that kicked off proceedings and were again victorious the following afternoon, winning 7-5. Local talent also got their chance to shine with Team Australia taking on each of the American teams in exhibition matches in the nights leading up to the main games − and they didn’t waste the opportunity. The local boys began with a creditable 4-2 loss to the Dodgers, before going one 30

better and pulling off a shock 5-0 win over the Diamondbacks. Outfielder Tim Kennelly etched his name into the record books hitting Archie Bradley out of the ball park to register Australia’s first home run on the SCG and set up his side for victory. That got the crowd on their feet and that enthusiasm for the game continued throughout the weekend. Stands selling baseball paraphernalia and MLB merchandise sold out quickly, and the US-style food (including the 24-inch ‘slugger’ hot dogs) also proved a hit. Officials and commentators were overwhelmed with the response and

with how successfully our traditional cricket ground was transformed to MLB specifications. It didn’t exactly happen overnight, but in just a few weeks SCG ground staff had taken 30 shipping containers of specially imported infield clay and grass grown from seeds flown in from the US to create a baseball diamond and pitcher’s mound, as well as building dugouts, club houses and bull pens. When the MLB show moved on, the ground was transformed again within a fortnight to be ready for the NRL Heritage Round. Famed Los Angeles Dodgers announcer, Vin Scully, stated from his broadcast box in the SCG: “I love the ballpark. I can’t believe this was not a baseball field. They’ve done such a great job”.

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig was equally enthusiastic. “I want to tell you how happy we are to be here,” Selig said. “It’s been a really marvellous three or four days for us. We’re really proud of the reception and the excitement.”

Selig acknowledged some shared history, noting that a century earlier the Chicago White Sox had toured with the New York Giants to play an exhibition series against NSW at the SCG. Asked when, on the back of the success of the recent series, we might see the MLB return to our hallowed turf, Selig replied: “It won’t be another 100 years, I can assure you of that. I’m very confident that we’ll come back – absolutely”.

Dress to Impress The SCG is no stranger to all sorts of TV and photo shoots but this is a sneak preview of a special one arranged for Members. Last month, Vogue Australia accepted our challenge to create a 2014-15 season style guide based on our revised Member dress regulations. Editor Edwina McCann is a regular visitor to sporting events at Allianz Stadium and the SCG and welcomed the chance to team with the Trust. Vogue’s Fashion Director, internationally acclaimed stylist Christine Centenera, and Market Editor Philippa Brophy partnered with Melbourne photographer Marija Ivkovic and Sydney design agency Pixeloco’s Creative Director Nathan Lyttleton for the two-day shoot. The resulting ‘look book’ will be sent to you in the lead up to the cricket season. Trust Membership and Marketing General Manager Jane Coles said the updated

dress regulations would be in place for the coming summer. “Our dress regulations generally define what is appropriate to wear. With this look book, Vogue is illustrating how good and how stylish that can be,” she said. Trust marketing contractor Brae Mort, who coordinated the project, said the look book takes a different approach to traditional dress regulation brochures. “It’s about inspiring our Members and their guests’ style, rather than producing long lists of what is and isn’t acceptable in our Members’ precincts,” Brae said. “Spectators often put a lot of thought into what they’re going to wear to the races. Watching a Test match at the SCG from the Members is an equally special social event.” Full details of dress requirements are available in the membership section of the Trust website.

Renew Membership for the Opening Over Members are in for a huge summer of international cricket, starting with the ODI against South Africa. Australia then takes on India in the January Test, before facing them and England in the ODI tri-series. Added to that is a busy schedule of domestic fixtures including four Sydney Sixers home games, two Sheffield Shield matches and the One Day Cup final. And you can now choose to watch all this with the atmosphere of the traditional pavilions or the state-of-the-art facilities offered in the new SCG stands. Outlined below are all the practical card usage and seating arrangements you need to know to make the most of it. All Members who pay by the due date will be sent a complimentary copy of our 2015 Sports Diary. If we haven’t received your payment by 15 October, your membership cards will be deactivated and you’ll incur a $60 late fee on top of your subscription to reactivate them.

Personal items cannot be used to reserve seats and can be removed by Customer Service staff helping Members find seats. Some seating on the concourse level of the Members Pavilion is allocated specifically for our 50+ year Members. A limited number of seats and wheelchair spaces are reserved for Members with disabilities. To request one, please phone Membership Services during either of the reserved seating application windows mentioned below. Members have the opportunity to purchase reserved seats for the first four days of the Test and all ODIs. You are not able to choose specific seat locations, but a map showing the reserved bays will be available on the Trust website when applications open. To ease web and phone congestion for Members applying for reserved seats, there will be two registration periods this year – one for SCG Members (9am, Friday 3 October until 5pm, Friday 10 October) and one for Gold and Platinum (9am, Monday 20 October until 5pm, Monday 27 October).

If demand exceeds availability, we’ll conduct a ballot after completion of both registration periods. Seats will be allocated to successful applicants by a random computer draw. Members will have equal opportunity to secure seats regardless of when they registered and whether this was done online or by phone. Successful applicants should receive their tickets by Friday 9 November. You will be able to apply online using the Memberlink service or by phoning Membership Services on 1800 801155 during business hours. Our Off-Field Test Carnival The new SCG stands have brought a fresh approach to off-field activities for Members at the January Test.

Of course, you will still be able to book breakfast or lunch in the historic Dining Room of the Members Pavilion. Azure will also be open for breakfast and lunch for Gold and Platinum Members.

There will be plenty of pink activities including the traditional Jane McGrath High Tea. Check your Member e-newsletters in the coming weeks for booking details.

The ‘Village Green’ in the plaza behind the stands will once again become a social hub, decked with market umbrellas and large screens, alongside the Food Court’s bars and gourmet food stalls.

Full details of what will be available for you at the Test were still being finalised as ATG went to press, but closer to the time Members will receive a Cricket Guide with full information. Also make sure you are receiving the weekly Member e-newsletters for the latest updates.

Also look out for the Daily Innings newssheet for the latest updates on Member activities, interesting stories and statistics from our Test history. The Daily Innings is distributed to Members in the gate queues on the first four mornings of the match. Copies will also be available from the Matchday Office near Gate A.

Off-field events begin with the Members’ Breakfast on day one, that will be held for the first time in the magnificent new Noble Dining Room. It’s the perfect way to soak up some pre-match atmosphere while listening to the predictions of former Test stars and socialising with like-minded cricket tragics. The buzz continues in the bars and cafes on the roof terrace, and in the Brewers Pavilion and Sports Bar on level two, or you can wander across the Members’ Lawn and sip a barista coffee while watching the teams warm up in the practice nets.

Rest assured there will be all the past favourites such as post-play Stumps Sessions, the kids’ cricket clinics on Allianz Stadium, special morning teas or lunches for our 50+ year and country Members, book signings and bat and ball making demonstrations. The SCG Museum is preparing an exhibition recalling some of the most significant clashes with India in the ground’s history. These include photos and memorabilia from Don Bradman’s 100th first class century, scored at the SCG against India in 1947. The museum will be open to Members before play each day until the end of the tea break. Each morning for the first three days, the museum will offer free Basil Sellers Sports Sculptures tours with the project’s artistic adviser, Henry Mulholland. And it wouldn’t be a Sydney Test without the Jane McGrath Day. Get your pink kit and charitable generosity ready for day three, as the SCG hosts the breast cancer charity for the seventh time and does its best to better the record $800,000 raised last year.

Perhaps the most cherished off-field activity will be one that takes place on it. Fifty lucky Members will be selected to attend Tom Parker’s Curator’s Breakfast on day two. Participants become part of a select group allowed to walk on the hallowed turf during a Test match. They join Tom at the wicket for a pitch inspection and the chance to chat to him about the finer points of his craft and some tales from behind the scenes. Members who renew their subscriptions by the due date of 1 October will automatically be entered into a Curator’s Breakfast ticket draw. New Chairman & New Trustees Richard Colless AM

Tony Shepherd AO

There have been significant changes in recent months among the group of people entrusted to oversee the management of the SCG and Allianz Stadium. Tony Shepherd was appointed as the Trust’s new Chairman in March, following the resignation of the long-serving Rodney Cavalier. Mr Shepherd has been a Trustee since 2002 and became Deputy Chairman last year. He is a widely respected businessperson and government adviser, and a former Business Council President. Mr Shepherd said it was an exciting time to take on the role as the Trust pursued its vision to modernise the precinct. He paid tribute to his predecessor. “Rodney was instrumental in paving the way for our vision over 13 years of service as Chairman. I never met anyone with more passion for the grounds and the sports played here,” he said.

Rod McGeoch, who has been a Trustee since 1998, is the new Deputy Chairman. They were joined in April by former Sydney Swans Chairman Richard Colless. He stepped down from his Swans role at the end of last season after 20 years of leading the club to become one of the most successful franchises in Australian sport. Further changes were heralded in May with the outcome of the Members election of Trustees. You elected ex-Wallaby Phil Waugh and former Test bowler David Gilbert as your representatives on the Trust for the next four years. Mr Waugh played 79 Tests for Australia, including three as captain. He works in corporate finance for the Commonwealth Bank.

Mr Gilbert played nine Test matches and 14 ODIs for Australia before his career as a cricket administrator. Most recently he was Chief Executive of Cricket NSW. “We look forward to the input of Phil and David as the Trust’s venues move into an exciting stage of redevelopment. Phil’s standing in and knowledge of the rugby community will be important, while David's knowledge as a player and administrator will further strengthen our association with the cricket world,” Mr Shepherd said. The new elected Trustees took up their positions in July, replacing former rugby great Ken Catchpole and James McNally. Westpac CEO Gail Kelly resigned from the Trust in July.

Leah Monks: new fitness centre manager

Around the Gym Under New Management Self-confessed sports fanatic Leah Monks became the fitness centre’s new manager at the end of July. She joined us from the management team at the North Sydney Pool and Gym and has several years’ experience running her own personal trainer and group exercise business as well as working for the Australian Paralympic Committee. Leah said her motivation for making the switch to leading the Stadium Fitness Centre was a desire to work within a large dynamic facility and her belief in its potential for further development. “This is a great facility, and I can envisage it developing into a worldclass, internationally renowned complex,” she said. “It is also brilliant working here because I’m a huge sports fanatic and I support the Swans and Waratahs passionately.” 40

In recent weeks, the Stadium Fitness Centre has appointed a new manager, modernised some key equipment and launched an innovative fitness and well-being program.

Previously Leah completed a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management with distinction at the University of Technology Sydney, while running personal training and group exercise programs at Fernwood Women’s Health gyms in Rosebery and Chatswood.

In the lead-up to the 2012 London Paralympics, she gained a six-month internship to work with APC sports management and operations. This included organisation of the national team for the games, and various events in the aftermath such as the welcome home function, and the Paralympian of the Year awards.

see her around the gym. Former manager (and new mum) Claire Whitehead will continue to work part-time for the Stadium Fitness Centre, managing specific projects.

Gym users will have noticed some recent changes, with four new pieces of strength equipment and a different layout to maximise floor space. The changes resulted from feedback given by Members in the fitness centre survey

Gym supervisors Adriana Kalidis and Peter Bright were among the first to put the new kit through its paces in a rigorous workout. They said the new equipment was a significant step up on the models it replaced and would allow Members greater variety in their training programs.

Here’s their assessment:

Fly/Rear Delt Machine (Peter)

Bravo FT450 (Adriana)

“This resistance machine is a direct replacement for the old one. It can be used to train individual muscles according to its need, or to balance the workout when one arm is weaker or injured.”

“This is a very sophisticated piece of equipment but it can be set up easily to suit a beginner, intermediate or advanced user for lower and upper body exercises. You can make vertical and rotational adjustments to the cable configurations to use it for a wide variety of motions.”

8’ Half Rack (Peter) “This gives us a lot more options for the large compound movements in weight training such as squats, deadlifts, power cleans and snatches and bench or military presses. This will handle any requirements for workouts from beginners to the most advanced athlete.”

Lat Pulldown (Adriana) “This is a traditional Lat Pulldown for strengthening back muscles, but it has a different kind of alignment on the overhead pulley that helps ensure you stick to the best technique for maximum benefit.”

Ask one of the gym staff for instruction before using any piece of equipment for the first time.

Strengthen Your Mind & Body The fitness centre is launching a new eight-week program next month that works on the mental as well as physical aspects of well-being. The ‘Strong Mind Body’ program combines meditation and goal-setting techniques with traditional fitness and strength training and nutrition. Fitness experts will lead three group training sessions a week (early Monday mornings, Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings) from 13 October to 7

December. Some will be outdoor training or strength circuits, others will be yoga, meditation or individual gym programs to support the group training. Participants will have individual goals based on an initial fitness test, but will have the support and motivation of training with a group. Program coordinator Stephanie Pick said the mental aspects of training were extremely important. “There is often an inner critic inside our heads saying things like ‘I don’t think I can’, ‘it’s too hard’, or ‘people will laugh at me’. Once we recognise such negative thoughts that limit self-belief, we can challenge them in a supportive environment and push past these obstacles,” Stephanie said.

The program costs $600 and is open to Platinum and Gold Members and guests. Email: stadiumfitnesscentre@scgt.nsw.gov.au for further information.

to the Lord’s Test. There will be a dinner in the Long Room afterwards, and naturally, the tourists will be enjoying a day in the stands for the Test as well. Any Trust Member can join the SCG XI. You don’t have to play cricket, you just need to enjoy the game and socialise with fellow tragics.

When ATG inquired about the scores, we were told “cricket was the winner”. We’ll take that as ‘mixed results with the occasional win in a competitive and sporting series’.

If you do want to play, they welcome men and women cricketers of all standards for their tours and a series of social games played in and around Sydney each summer – including on our famous SCG.

In the classic tradition of ‘what happens on tour, stays on tour’, ATG has pledged not to reveal too many details about what the 15 players and 10 supporters got up to. Let’s just say that when bookings opened for the club’s Ashes tour to England next July, they filled within 24 hours. You can’t get too much of a good thing.

Recognising that Members are joining them for different reasons, the SCG XI is introducing a new non-playing membership this year for just $49. That entitles you to join in all their social activities and enjoy the banter and matches from the boundary.

The two-week Ashes tour will include a series of three social matches at some of the country’s most atmospheric county, village and private grounds before culminating in a game against the MCC on the Lord’s Nursery Ground in the lead-up

Their playing membership fee has been maintained at $150 for the coming year. You will receive an SCG XI membership mailing with full details on how to join in the next few weeks. In the meantime, you can contact manager Paula Booth on pbooth@scgt.nsw.gov.au WINTER 2014

Food & Drink Ordering Available on New App The Trust is launching a new version of its phone app, with improved features such as in-seat ordering of food and drinks, live stats, mobile ticketing and personalised offers and rewards. The app, to be ready in time for the coming cricket season, will continue to offer handy practical information like live car park updates, venue maps and the Trust newsfeed. Event information will be improved with direct ticket purchase links. In-seat ordering has been available in the new SCG Members’ stands for several months, and is being introduced to Allianz Stadium for the start of the 2015 NRL season. Integrating it into the app will make access simpler, without requiring a separate log-in, and give customers the option of saving their credit card details for future purchases. Fans will also be able to use the app to interact with the latest event-day content and statistics for the first time. The new app will be available from Google Play or Apple iTunes in time for the ODI against South Africa in November.

Life Membership for Ken Catchpole Rugby legend Ken Catchpole recently bid farewell to the SCG Trust after serving as one of our Trustees for 24 years. Ken completed his service in July, and the Members Pavilion Long Bar seemed like the most appropriate location for friends, family and colleagues to gather to wish him well. Guests included both previous chairmen Ken worked with – Rodney Cavalier and Sir Nicholas Shehadie. In gratitude: Tony Shepherd thanks Ken Catchpole

Current Trust Chairman Tony Shepherd paid tribute to Ken and presented him with a life membership for his years of dedication. He had been a member-elected Trustee since 1990, but announced earlier this year that he would not be standing for re-election. “Ken Catchpole was a hero in Australian colours on the Sydney Cricket Ground,” Mr Shepherd said. “As a Trustee, he matched those efforts on the field. Ken’s deep knowledge of rugby, and his place among its true greats, has been a tremendous asset for the Trust." Ken represented Australia in 27 Tests, including 13 as captain, in the 1960s. He was first named captain in his Test debut against Fiji, 11 days before he turned 21. His bronze sculpture graces the forecourt of Allianz Stadium as part of the Basil Sellers Sports Sculpture Project. He is also recognised in the Walk of Honour.

He was also one of five inaugural inductees into the Australian Rugby Union Hall of Fame and the IRB Hall of Fame. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2001. WINTER 2014

Badges of Honour They were simpler, less technology-driven times but until the early 1980s, Trust Members would pass through the gates by displaying their badge rather than scanning a plastic card. The SCG Museum recognises the heritage significance of the badges and has embarked on a project to compile and document a full collection for every year of membership of the SCG (or the Association Cricket Ground as it was once known), and the Sydney Sports Ground (now Allianz Stadium).

tie these to their lapels, while their wives might receive a love-heart shaped leather version to gain entry to the Ladies Pavilion.

The ‘badges’ started as leather and paper cards when the Members of the Association Cricket Ground paid their annual two-guinea subscription in anticipation of watching the venue’s first cricket Test in 1882.

Progress accelerated earlier this year when SCG Member Bruce Code joined the museum’s volunteer program and dedicated himself to the project under the direction of Museum Assistant Anthony O’Carroll and Curator Leah Domanski.

By the early 1900s, the badges became metal medallions with detailed craftsmanship and elaborate designs that changed annually. Gentlemen would

The museum is close to completing research on the hundreds of badges in its possession and is calling for Members to help fill gaps in the collection.

The museum’s work began 10 years ago, and involves painstaking research of archived documents such as membership registers and production records to uncover the full story.

If you have a badge from any of the years listed below and would be willing to donate it to the museum, please email Anthony at museum@scgt.nsw.gov.au.

Steve Waugh to Become Bradman Legend

Members are invited to see Australia’s most successful cricket captain, Steve Waugh, become the latest Bradman Honouree at this year’s Bradman Gala Dinner. The prestigious award is issued annually to a player who has made a significant contribution to international cricket, while reflecting Sir Donald Bradman’s values of courage, honour, integrity, humility and determination. Waugh played 168 Tests for Australia, joining an elite handful of batsmen to score more than 10,000 runs. He captained the side for 57 of those matches, with the team winning an incredible 41 under his leadership.

He was at the helm for 15 of Australia’s world record 16 consecutive Test wins that began in 1999, and for the World Cup victory the same year.

ABC sports presenter Tracey Holmes will be the MC for the evening and the tribute will be delivered by broadcaster and fellow SCG Trustee Alan Jones.

Arguably his most remembered innings was the famous ‘last ball century’ against England that sent the SCG crowd into raptures in 2003 and equalled Bradman’s then record of 29 Test tons.

Members receive a $25 discount off the normal ticket price of $425 (which includes a tax-deductible donation of $200 to support Bradman Foundation charities). Premium tables with extra corporate benefits are also available.

Outside of his playing achievements, he serves as an SCG Trustee and has been globally praised for his community and charity work, particularly for children in India and Australia. The dinner, hosted by the Bradman Foundation and to be held in the SCG’s new MA Noble Stand on Wednesday 29 October, will begin with drinks on the field at 6pm.

To Book Contact Karen Mewes by email: events@bradman.com.au or phone (02) 4861 5422. You can also get further information or download a booking form from the Bradman Foundation website: www.bradman.com.au
