Federal Agency The Federal Bureau of Investigations The FBI, or the Federal bureau of investigations, is headquartered in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. The FBI was formed in 1908 and is currently being lead by Director Robert S. Mueller III. The mission statement of the agency states “As an intelligence-driven and a threat-focused national security organization with both intelligence and law enforcement responsibilities, the mission of the FBI is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners” ( http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/quick-facts). Basically the criminal justice duties that the FBI performs is the national threats and the threats that local and state agencies are not equipped to handle alone. On their website, they have a list of some of the tasks that they perform: “protect the United States from terrorist attack, protect the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage, protect the United States against cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes, combat public corruption at all levels, protect civil rights, combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprise, combat major white-collar crime, combat significant violent crime, support federal, state, local and international partners, upgrade technology to successfully perform the FBI’s mission” ( http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/quick-facts). According to the website I accessed, the minimum qualifications for employment for the FBI are different depending on which career path you wish to take. For the Special Agents, they must be a U.S. Citizen between the ages of 23 and 37 with a 4-year college degree from a credible university and a valid drivers license and must be available for assignments in any of the FBI's jurisdiction.

State Criminal Justice Agency The Georgia Bureau of Investigations The Georgia Bureau of investigations, or the GBI, was created in 1937 and is currently directed by Vernon M. Keenan. The only physical address that I could find was the one for Human Resources which is stationed in Decatur, GA. The mission statement of this agency states “The Mission of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is to provide the highest quality investigative, scientific, and information services and resources to the criminal justice community and others as authorized by law, for the purpose of maintaining law and order and protecting life and property. The Mission will be achieved by a team of skilled and dedicated employees, utilizing innovative programs and state of the art technology” (http://gbi.georgia.gov/mission-statement). The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is basically the state's version of the FBI. It seeks to keep order and give criminals their justice. Its duties serve a very wide range of tasks from keeping the crime reports to investigating crimes to preventing child abuse. It has a very wide range of duties it performs. The qualifications for employment vary from job to job based on which career you choose. If you choose to be a special agent of the GBI the minimum qualifications are that you are a U.S. Citizen of at least 21 years of age with 20/20 near vision with or without correction, 20/20 far vision with correction and 20/200 far vision without correction, a medical examination must be passed, and a vision test must be administered to assess the peripherals.

Local Criminal Justice Agency Gordon County Sheriff's Department The Gordon County sheriff's department is currently run by our valued sheriff Mitch Ralston from the headquarters in Resaca, Georgia. Since the website does not give a year as to when the sheriff's department was founded, I decided that a trip up to the sheriff's department would prove to be a very valuable and entertaining experience for me. They have a miniature museum at the sheriff's department that gives a brief history of Gordon County's public safety. It has many pictures and artifacts from as far back as it can be traced. On the wall, there is a huge poster of the many sheriff's of Gordon County, the first of which dates back to the 1700s. There was not a definite answer as to when it was established, but the sheriff's go back to the 1700s, so it can only be assumed that the sheriff's department was founded sometime in the late 1700s. The mission statement is not stated on the website, but there is a quote on the website that states a motto and a way of living and working: “We are here for you. Our motto, “Dedicated and Sworn to Serve”, is a reflection of our core values of service, integrity, and professionalism. We are dedicated to the people of this community. We are sworn to protect everyone equally, without fear or favor, by upholding our laws. We serve the community because we truly care about the people in it” (http://sheriff.gordoncounty.org/Home.aspx). The employment requirements are as follows: Applicant must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and must be of good moral character. The requirements for the starting position of jailor is a one and a half mile jog, pushups, situps, a written exam, and a formal interview.
