welcomes you to

Belle is a magazine designed for southern college women who enjoy all things social. From fall fashion must-haves to fitness secrets or dorm makeovers to quick meals, we have got it all. Belle travels to different southern colleges for each issue to discover what life is like at that college and what the college women are buzzing about. We not only highlight entertainment, but also give you ideas that will help you complete those 4 years of college (or maybe you are a 5th year senior, its okay!). The fall issue of Belle magazine traveled down to Alabama to take a look at Troy University. This school is not one to overlook, but is slowly making a big impact throughout the world. With college campuses

all over the Unites States, and all around the world, we were excited to find a wide diversity of students on their campus. You will find Troy University located in the middle of the small town of Troy, Alabama. The town offers everything from a beautiful downtown square with little antique shops and boutiques to stately old homes, still glowing with southern charm. Troy has to compete with some other big name schools in Alabama, but Troy is up to the challenge. What made this school special to us was that there was not much to do in the town so most students spent their time bonding with their new college friends. Although most might complain that they have no mall,

amusement park or any activity that will take up their weekends, they have found a true home away from home at Troy and made lifelong friends as well. Another thing that makes this university special is that it holds a place for everyone. Whether you spend your nights rehearsing a theatre production, at a social with your sorority, or practicing for the softball game on Friday: everyone seems to find a perfect place to fit in. Belle found Troy University to be a true gem among Southern universities. With it’s quaint, smalltown charm to it’s internationally diverse student body, Troy University offers a unique college experience for it’s students.

college life in the south from our belle editor For me, college was a journey of constant change. Change in jobs, location, friends and change in everything I had become used to. I grew up in a small town and decided to go to college in that same small town along with some of my closest friends. The first change came when we all decided to take different paths and join 3 different soroities on campus. This was good for us to experience college in a different light but for me I never felt at home with the changes I had made in my life. I knew my place was with my sorority but my heart was not in the college experience yet. The biggest turning point in my college career was when the change of a job came. I left the job where I had been working for 2 years to do something I had dreamed of since I was 15. I packed my room and made my way to my new home for the summer, the beach. I could not believe the idea I had as a fifteen year old had actually panned out. I had the best summer job living with my cousin and meeting many new people and experiencing life outside of my small town. It will be a summer I will never forget; that summer changed everything I had thought about where my life would go.

6

Once I came back I decided I did not want to change the freedom I had acquired over the summer and so I moved in with my best friends from high school. I was free to experience a different side of college I was not used to. Yet with moving in with my best friends came new changes. Although I still love them dearly, our friendship could not withstand the trials of living together. We all tried to handle the hardships, but little by little I realized the situation was making it harder to make our friendships work. We all changed in those 2 years of living together. We were no longer the girls in high school with our biggest problems being who was going to drive to the movies. We had all grown up and seemed to be growing in very different paths. But was this a bad thing? Through it all, I found a new group of friends that finally made me feel at home. I knew that I had finally found my place in college life in that small town. I was able to truly say I was enjoying my years in college even if they were my final years. My years in college showed me exactly who I wanted to be and who I was meant to be. All the changes were just leading me to the right path where my life should be. I never imaged I

would be where I was today, but I am thankful for those many changes, that small town and my southern college. So enjoy your time at your southern college because college is the time to have fun and find yourself (and of course get an education)

Thank you kindly, Kaitlyn Franklin Editor-in-Chief

fall fashion from summer favorites For us ladies, it’s hard to watch our favorites clothes sit in the closet while they are not in season. We love them, but they are not appropriate for the next seaon. When we store them away, it is easy to forget what we have, and we often end up buying similar items when summer rolls around again. Belle is taking a stand! We have come up with some simple solutions to help those summer favorites become new favorite fall pieces. 10

This summer, fashion was all about cut off shorts and crop tops. Everyone was running to their local thrift store to find the perfect pair of pants to turn into some cute summer shorts or getting their six-pack abs ready for the revealing crop top. Now these may not be ideal for fall since the temperature starts to drop, but belle found ways to take those favorites pieces and make them suitable for fall.

The fall fashion was buzzing about chunky sweaters, booties and layering so we were on a mission to make this happen using our summer favorites. Now a crop top is not very practical for the fall, but you may be surprised by what we came up with using your summer must-haves. By layering our fall and summer favorites we came up with some fun and fashionable looks you can wear just about anywhere.

Jean vest

Put a summer twist on a fall classic. Layer your favorite flannel with a jean vest for the fall football weather.

13

Cut-off Shorts

Summer was all about cut offs but who says you have to put them away for fall? Adding a chunky sweater can take your summer shorts into a fall favorite.

When reaching for a casual outfit, try a maxi dress paired with a button up. This gives your casual look a sophisticated feel.

from college casual to business professional In most colleges, you are allowed to wear almost anything. Sweat pants and a big t-shirt are worn daily on those test days after pulling the long all-nighter or you may grab your jeans and a sweatshirt to make your outfit a little less drab. Casual is the key to college fashion. The students on campus who are forced to dress up always reach for the most comfy dress and boots because none of us ladies want to walk around campus all day in heels. This becomes the daily attire for the students. Whatever is comfy (and of course in style) goes! This is something we all become accustomed to and hey who can blame us! Yet what happens when you have to retire your college casual attire for something more professional? The sweatpants and t-shirt look is something you are only allowed to wear on the weekends. You have replaced the jeans with dress pants and the sweatshirt with a button up. Belle has come up with some ideas to transform your favorite college pieces into a business setting. 18

Graphic T-Shirt:

The word t-shirt does not come up in a business wardrobe very often. By pairing the shirt with a blazer or cardigan, it becomes something that shows a little of your personality without seeming unprofessional. Pair the t-shirt with your favorite pencil skirt and wedges. You turned the t-shirt into a fun business outfit.

Blue Jeans:

It is casual Friday again! Take your simple blue jeans to the next level by adding a nice button down. Maybe choose a floral button down or one with stripes. Just because this is business does not mean it has to be boring.

Chunky Sweater:

This fall favorite can also be a business favorite. They have a reputation of being a little too casual at times but we can change that. Throw on your favorite summer dress and top it off with the chunky sweater. This adds the fall layers we love and puts that floral dress to good use in the fall. Pair with a belt and some oxfords for a perfect casual Monday!

Fall Booties:

These are one of belle magazines fall favorites! Most will pair with blue jeans or leggings for a weekend shopping trip or a night out with the girls. Yet pair your favorite booties with a dress and scarf and your can rock them at work and maybe dinner after work with the girls.

Don’t be afraid to mix your casual style into your business wardrobe. This way you don’t feel so guilty about buying all those college casual pieces thinking that they would never work with your professional wardrobe. Business attire can be casual and fun by just simply addding in some of your favorite pieces.

dorm away from home a “perfectly imperfect inspired dorm makeover

before

Home & Dorm Decor

Dorm rooms can be dark, dreary and become places that no student wants to spend their time. However, your dorm room is now your home away from home and there is no reason not to love it. We took a dorm in Hamil Hall on Troy University campus and transformed it into something any college woman will love. We made the room to feel like home by adding some classic pieces while keeping to the southern charm. We found some classic pieces at the local thrift and antique stores and then went on a shopping spree at Perfectly Imperfect in Troy, AL. By updating thrift store finds and some pieces already owned, belle was able to splurge at Perfectly Imperfect. The dorm room made a huge change without breaking the bank.

DIY study organization Take your drab desk to somewhere you will want to spend all of your time. We took a normal dorm desk and created a beautiful work space while getting everything organized. Simple do-it-yourself projects will make a home for all your school clutter while making it a cool and fun place to study.

24

Desk Organization

Belle took two shadow boxes to make this wonderful desk organizer. It is as simple as gluing! Even as simple as it is, you can also customize this organizer by using your favorite paper instead of cork. We paired it with a gold table lamp and a small paint can made into a planter. Don’t let it fool you, this organizer is great to tuck away all of your papers.

Belle

Mouse Pad Re-do

You may think we have taken it a little over board by a mouse pad re-do, but in our defense we have a good reason. For most people, their mouse pad is just a simple black thing that we all take for granted. Why not make it something special instead? This was a $3 makeover that took less than 5 minutes to do. Its a fun way to customize your office or study space plus is helps to add a little bit of color too.

Shelf Storage

We found these two crates at the local hardware store and knew they would be perfect for storage. These crates are great because they can be stained or painted any color desired! Belle filled the shelf storage with cute and functional pieces. You might see that we decided to use another paint can for a pencil holder. Then we picked up a bowl at the local thrift store to hold paper clips. You can make storage pieces out of almost anything! Storage peices help to keep your desk organized and clean because who wants to work and study at a messy desk?

Painted Pencils

Pencils are something that are a nessecity for any college student. Belle took a package of 90 cent pencils and gave them a million dollar makeover. With just a little bit of paint and some patience, we have some adorable purple pencils. They require 2 coats of paint and a day of drying. Belle wanted an ombre effect so we added a little more white to the paint each time.

how to make a room look bigger In a dorm room, space is something that is very hard to come by. Most students share a room with someone and that makes the room look even smaller. We have come up with some tips and tricks that will help you make your dorm room look bigger, while also maximizing your available space. Dorm rooms can be dark, scary places which give it a smaller appearance. One way to make a room instantly bigger is letting in natural light. You can add lighting if natural light is hard to come by or you can hang light colored or sheer curtains. This will let the available light come in so that you do not feel like you are living in a dungeon but still lets you have some light blockage. You could also hang your curtains higher than your actual windows as an easy fix that will make add some “height” to the room. When you are picking out the perfect bedding for college, choose something that is light in color. Light colors are more reflective and make the room look bigger. You can accent your light bedding with some fun pops of color, but remember to keep most of the color palette light. In dorm rooms you can’t paint the wall, but most tend to be painted in 28

the tan family which works to your advantage. The tan colors are one of the light colors which, just like the bedding, makes your room seems bigger. While we are on the wall, mirrors are another great way to get the illusion of a space. You can make a mirror mural or hang a long mirror on the wall. Mirrors are not just practical, but a decorative way to up-date your dorm room. Now I know we all hated our moms telling us to clean our room but in the dorm room seeing the floor is a must. The more clutter in your room the smaller the room. With limited floor space, you must try and hide all those extra storage containers and furniture so that the space feels open. This also applies to the accessories. Keep your dorm room clean and open; don’t clutter it with a lot of knick knacks. Just remember to make your dorm a place you will love for years to come. Don’t be afraid to use pieces from home to give your dorm that “home away from home” feeling.

meals made easy College students barely have to time to sleep let alone find time to cook meals. We have found some meals that will take you less than 10 minutes and will make your taste buds happy. The meals are ones that any student can make even if you are confined to a dorm room with only a microwave. Using things such as instant ramen noodles or macaroni and cheese and adding some quick ingredients will make instant food taste like homemade food.

how to avoid that pesky Freshman 15 As college women, the most frightening thing about college is the Freshman 15. We all try to avoid it by crash diets or exercise overload, but in the end these vast measures only delay the weight gain. This is true because once you have reached your fitness goal, we all seem to slack off and we go back to those bad habits. For some of us though, the freshman 15 does not hit until you have reached your 3rd or 4th year of college and by that point the 15 pounds has doubled. College students are all about fast food and late night munchies. It is easier for you to grab Taco Bell in between classes or that bag of chips when you are pulling an all-nighter for a test than to make healthy meals for the week or to grab for fruits and vegetables. I know how hard it is to dedicate one day to make meals for the week or try and exercise every day. There are days where you hardly have time to take a breather let alone find time for a healthy lifestyle. Many college students have tried to have a healthy lifestyle, but have gone about it all wrong. They have starved themselves and poured everything into exercising to only find that their body is less healthy than before. Taking extreme measures will 48

not give you extreme results, it only makes it harder to make this a part of your lifestyle. There are some women who have done it all the right way. They have made healthier eating choices, even gone on popular diets that have worked for many others and spent an hour a day in the gym with no results. This leaves you feeling worse than before you started because you don’t know what else you could have done. We could tell you to exercise every day, twice a day or that you may only eat certain food at this time every day but let us tell you a secret‌ there is no proven science to guarantee you weight loss or a fit body. Every woman is made differently so each person reacts to different things. Just as we all react to weight gain differently the same goes for losing that weight. As one may just run each day for a month and lose 10 pounds another may dedicate the same time and commitment and only lose 3 pounds. Finding what works for your body is the best advice you can give anyone trying to lose weight. Once you have mastered how your body works, determined your strengths and weaknesses, and what exercises

and food choices work for you then you will find that the Freshman 15 just seems to melt away or never come at all. So change your lifestyle for the better by making healthier choices but also devote yourself into finding out what works best for your body and we promise you will love your body and your body will love you back!
