STUDIO 804

722 ASH ST RESIDENCE Three gables, striking and modern, yet locally vernacular in language, rise into the air above a concrete hedge of privacy and function. The warm gable peaks, with faces clad in wood, stand out against the precision of the concrete walls below. The concrete hedge creates a boundary which echoes the spirit of traditional Midwestern farmstead vernacular while maintaining a sense of privacy for the user. The three structures house private living quarters, public entertaining space, and an accessory dwelling unit for visitors or family. Our vernacular research found farm houses were strictly oriented on a north-south axis. This design playfully disrupts that axis to gain more views of the Levee Trail neighboring the site.

The site is one of the last lots to directly neighbor the Levee Trail in North Lawrence. For nine miles it runs parallel with the Kansas River and is surrounded by a dense canopy of trees. This environment and the vernacular observation on typical Midwestern farmsteads inspire major design decisions. For instance, the exterior cladding of typical wooden barns are oriented vertically so as to shed water down and away from the main structure. That tried and true method is taken one step further in the design by acting as a rainscreen since the exterior cladding is attached by aluminum battens. The material which clads this structure is fabricated in the Austrian town of Sankt Veit an der Glan. It is a composite material of raw pulpwood, recycled wood, and natural resins produced with the energy of renewable fuels. This recipe makes for a highly durable exterior wall cladding product that resists the natural elements and requires minimal maintenance that will not discolor over its lifespan. The primary residence is approximately 1,550 square feet containing two bedrooms, one full bath, half bath, great room, full kitchen. An accessory dwelling unit of 520 square feet with a wet bar, full bath, and flex space is attached. Together, these components create a modern homestead with a focus on form, function, sustainability, and connectedness.

Electrical & Lighting Plan As part of leading the electrical team for our house on Ash St, I had to make the documents on this page for use on site and preplanning. The electrical plan is the culmination of many iterations. I had to figure out how all of our electrical and lighting would be laid out and iterate as the house would change or things on site came up. Being flexible and able to solve problems throughout the year has been a great challenge but extremely rewarding as I have learned a lot about the MEP side of construction. One of the greatest challenges with this was studying the National Electric Code as well as interpreting the local codes in Lawrence. Overall the rewards of my new knowledge far outweighted the struggles of figuring everything out. As well as developing and physically installing and wiring everything, I was able to secure multiple full donations from companies such as Contech Lighting for all of our can lights and Atlas Roofing for all of our polyiso insulation. Working with real companies and talking to their sales reps has opened my eyes to the products available to architects and how working with many of them is helpful for projects and figuring out budgets.

THE CLIMB LAWRENCE WELLNESS CENTER A rock climbing tower emerges from the center of the grid to draw the people of Lawrence, KS into an experience they won’t forget. They not only can enjoy the public features of a juice bar and lobby, but also will challenge themselves on this 100ft rock climbing wall, relax in the hydrotherapy pools, indulge in the gym, and enjoy the massage rooms. This glass enclosed beacon is a symbol of the potential of Lawrence’s fitness community to evolve and try new things.

DES MOINES INFERNO FEDERAL COURTHOUSE

Towering above the city we designed a courthouse that had a very hierarchical and strong presence. Situated along the river walk we emphasized the site’s surrounding by integrating pathways that connect to the public walkways. The challenge was adhering to a strict programming language of required spaces for federal courthouses while maintaining a space that was inviting to the public. The three realms that had to integrate were the public zones, restricted, and private. The challenge allowed my partner Shane Kim and I to have to think outside of the box to create and engaging narrative.

RESIDE:MUMBAI MIXED HOUSING This competition involved solving how to properly develop a peninsula in Mumbi where a long standing fishing culture has lived without pushing them out and providing a community that can dwell and coexist. My reimagining of this mostly slum area was a basic concept of a small square footage home made of timber construction that could be quickly produced, added on to, and could appease the low income fisherman, local enterpreneaurs, and people somewhere in the middle. I wanted to utilize the ocean by constructing piers that would have these small homes populate and allow the fishing community to flourish on the bay but also provide beautiful views for the other community member.

CHICAGO OPERA HOUSE My focus for this design was to create an emerging yacht inspired opera house. It is meant to glow amongt the city of Chicago. I wanted it to transform the way people interact on the southern side of Navy Pier. It is meant to be explored even when events aren’t happening within. The exterior walkways touch the water and allow for boats of all kinds to port.

Design Build This project involved creating analytiques representing an iconic and inspiring building. I chose the Temple of Inscriptions created by the Maya because of its powerful presense and bold steps representing the many levels of the afterlife. Our overall concept was to utilize Rhino and Grasshopper to design a kit of parts that could be CNC routed and fit together with just a mallet and teamwork. We crafted a gallery space that allowed us to hang our analytiques and craft a user experience for each indivial to interact with. The creation process allowed us to design for the user and create something that was not only structurally sound but easily accessible to the public and able to be cheaply made.
