T h e Gr ee n House sustainability + community center

CENTRAL CONNECTIONS The design for ‘The Green House’ will be influenced by the concept of growing central connections. Located in Florida’s capital, Tallahassee, the center will represent the city’s enhanced sense of community and help to build stronger relationships between members by providing spaces to encourage individual learning and social interaction. Much like the ways a capital city serves as a central gathering point for a diverse population, The Green House will represent the daily connections constantly occurring within a community of people of different ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds. The center aims to provide users with knowledge of leading environmentally aware lifestyles and the design will reflect this idea by using natural elements, sustainable materials, and providing nods to nature with biophilia. Light, neutral tones juxtaposed with darker green and blue hues inspired by the local environment, and maximizing daylighting opportunities will create a sense of serenity and harmony within the space. The concept of growing central connections will influence the space planning and zoning with the creation of a central garden with clear sightlines and accessibility into open spaces to evoke a feeling of connectivity. Environmental graphic and branding elements will create a cohesive space and provide users with clear signage and wayfinding pathways to offer them a sense of control within their environment. The Green House will be a much needed addition for the Tallahassee community, offering a ‘third-place’ away from home and work, leading the city with its sustainable values and practices, providing members a space to grow, learn, and connect together.

1625 Apalachee Parkway Tallahassee, Florida The location of the wellness center is along Apalachee Parkway, a main road in Tallahassee, Florida. The entrance will face the adjacent parking lot to encourage accessibility. The surrounding buildings consist of commercial retail spaces, giving the center the opportunity to be a meeting place for employees of the area for moments of respite and rejuvenation. Locally sourced building materials will be used in the design of a new entrance to create a welcoming environment.

ENTRY Members of the Tallahassee community are greeted by The Green House main circulation desk and social seating areas, providing an inviting and refreshing first impression upon entry .

As the capital of Florida, Tallahassee is thought of as a hub for building connections and networking. However, the city is lacking in welcoming environments offering sustainable opportunities for members of its community to join and develop relationships. This design will bring Tallahassee’s community together through the form of a natural and refreshing space offering social interactions and growth in knowledge through gardening, cooking, yoga, and art classes. The design of the center will be a much-needed social space for the community, encouraging collaboration and supporting the development of Tallahassee’s wide range of individuals.

RESTORED GROWTH The city of Chicago has shown growth and resilience dating back to The Great Chicago Fire in 1871. From the ashes, Chicago has been restored with gardens that flourish, blossom, as well as bring optimism and well-being to the community. It is important to emphasize restorative energy and elements in the design of the fully renovated primary care clinic on the 14th floor of 875 N Michigan Ave. There are over 8,000 acres of parks in Chicago, influencing Chicago’s motto, Urbs in Horto which translates to "City in a Garden”. The spatial zoning and clear circulation seen throughout the parks and gardens will inspire the space plan of the design. The natural and refreshing color palette of the gardens seen throughout Chicago will provide the primary clinic with an inviting aesthetic. Views of Chicago’s gardens bring a restorative and rejuvenating element to the users of the space. Through ease of accessibility, positive distractions, and a soothing color palette this patient-centered design can bloom and grow alike the gardens of Chicago and the community.

PEOPLE P E INFLUENCE NFLU

INFLUENCE U ENVIRONMENT EN T

Person-Environment theory will influence this design by offering all users of the space optimal accessibility and achieving a successful universal design. Providing a fully functional and accessible space plan is important to ensure that the users are comfortable and efficient within their environment. With varying roles being played in this space from healthcare worker, patient, and visitor, it is essential to create an environment that complies to the needs of all it's users.

OVERAL L CONSID ERATIONS It is important to provide wide hallways and pathways to offer efficient circulation within the space. As well as, variety’s of seating options for family members and visitors to aid in keeping high traffic areas clear for healthcare workers daily circulation. Privacy in the exam room is very important for promoting patient comfort in this design. Room dividers or a shade system offered to patient exam rooms will maximize privacy levels and emphasize patient centered design. Offering consultation rooms that provide both patients and healthcare workers with privacy, function, and accessibility will create a comfortable and efficient environment. ZON I NG ZONI N G D I AGR A G R AM

Natural light and views of the outdoors provide patients and visitors with positive distractions. A cheerful and inviting color palette and design aesthetic also provide a positive distraction to users of the exam room. Universal design should be achieved in this healthcare design through a clear path of circulation, furniture selections that offer options for all ages and body ttypes, and automatic features installed on doors, water fountains etc. o

TECHNICAL SKILLS

The campus door elevation project was assigned to challenge AutoCAD detailing skills. We had the opportunity to choose a door facade on FSU’s campus; I decided on the icon of Florida State’s campus, The Westcott Building. This building is the home of The President’s office, Ruby Diamond Auditorium, and more. To honor my time at FSU this AutoCAD design pays homage to the hub of FSU’s hustle and bustle. Botany Bay, South Carolina is a beautiful and, very unique destination for locals and travelers to spend their time. The erosion on Botany Bay Beach has left various dead trees scattered along the sand, creating a unique coastline you have to walk to fully appreciate. Shell collection is prohibited; as a result the beach is full of whelks, scallops, clams, mussels, oysters, sea stars and sand dollars. The natural textures and organic shapes seen on Botany Bay are an inspiration for this kiosk design. Including an earthy color palette will compliment the environment and elements of the kiosk while paying homage to the inspiration, Botany Bay.

This project began with our professor having us randomly select a religion that is not our own and then designing a shrine for those who practice this religion. I selected Buddhism and was inspired by the path to enlightenment that Buddhist strive to achieve. This is the driving force for the concept of this design, influencing the plan circulation, zoning, and overall aesthetic. This project was done through the use of SketchUp and hand rendering in warm gray scale. SE C T I ON

Buddhist temples and gathering spaces include meditation with people sitting/kneeling on the floor on mats and other sitting objects, and the floor is maintained as a place as clean as any other sitting area in the space. For this reason it is required that shoes be removed upon entry to the worship space. P R O CE S S SKET C H

Buddhist gathering spaces typically appear to have a great Asian influence on it’s design aesthetic. It can incorporate indoor and outdoor spaces, natural light, and it is important to include parts of Buddhist symbology such as the Buddha. Buddhist gathering spaces should be a place one feels enlightened in and can pray for the happiness and well-being of them and their loved ones.
