My passion for architecture was ignited by Chinese shows like ‘Exchange Spaces’ and ‘Dream Home,’ which transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones through thoughtful design. Designers like Toshiyuki Kita, known for their empathetic solutions for ALS patients, have shown me the profound societal role of architecture.
During my undergraduate studies, I focused on harmonizing architectural design with user needs. One defining experience was my involvement in the Spring Water Museum project, where I conducted field research and engaged closely with local residents. These interactions deepened my understanding of architecture’s role in preserving urban memory and capturing cultural essence, solidified my belief in the power of architecture as a vessel of cultural significance. Then in my senior year, I led a project called “Unwinding Flower Haven” for an Urban Micro-Architecture competition. We aimed to create peaceful public spaces in busy cities by understanding the emotional needs of urban dwellers. Our solution was modular cubic structures with plants, providing tranquil havens for rejuvenation. It reaffirmed my belief in architecture’s empathetic power and shaped my aspiration for merging innovation with social responsibility in my future career.
My practical experiences, such as volunteering in the Quan City Marathon, taught me resilience and adaptability. Engaging in literature and academic forums expanded my critical thinking and interest in using architecture for societal improvement. As a team leader in the 2022 Shandong Province Construction Design Competition, I faced challenges like adapting to unexpected changes due to the pandemic. This reinforced my belief in the practical aspect of architecture, emphasizing harmony with the environment.
The Housing and Urbanism program at the Architectural Association School of Architecture offers a unique approach to addressing the critical issues in urban transformation and architecture’s role in supporting change. This program’s focus on contemporary challenges, such as urban resilience, complexity, and the integration of design excellence in decisionmaking across multiple sectors, aligns with my keen interest in urban development and architectural innovation.
I am particularly attracted to the program’s comprehensive curriculum, which combines theoretical foundations with practical design workshops, enhancing my understanding of urban trends, policies, and governance. The opportunity to delve into specialized areas like urban resilience, critical urbanism, and housing form, and to engage in international collaborations and workshops, is particularly appealing. This program offers the perfect platform for me to expand my knowledge, develop design leadership skills, and contribute to the field of architecture with a focus on sustainable and socially responsible urban development.

The east and west sides of the project site are the scenic spring with a beautiful environment and a long history, and the narrow streets of old residential areas are on the other side. Starting from the base, this design hopes to introduce the spring water culture into the old residential area in the streamline and line of sight with the help of the museum design, so as to give the surrounding residents a more convenient feeling of the spring water memory. In terms of space shaping, the design shapes the space from the three senses of "listening spring", "playing spring" and "viewing spring", that is, people's three senses of spring water. It adopts the method of typology to extract the spatial texture and form of Jinan's typical spring water, hoping that visitors can experience Jinan spring water culture from multiple senses.

GENERATE STRATEGY
There is a height difference of 4.5 meters between the east and west sides of the base.
The largest-scale virtual space is divided into large steps, which together with the original steps form a circular streamline around the site.
To show the respect the historical status of the Jiefang Pavilion ,the entire base is sunk.
The remaining virtual space act as courtyards and distributed between the exhibition halls, showing the intention of Jinan traditional residence.
In order to echo the spatial scale of residential streets, a two-story volume was raised.
For site treatment, the design extends the building plane texture, and sets riverfront walk, activity lawn and shallow pool .
Cutting the body blocks into 5 boxes makes it possible for residents to observe the river and liberation pavilion.
In the facade treatment, the brick structure is classified and set, creating a facade with changes

In terms of the shaping of the internal space, the design considers the relationship between the spring water space and people, hoping to mobilize the visitors' emotions towards the spring through the three senses of touch, vision and hearing, corresponding to the three behaviors between people and the spring: playing the spring, viewing the spring and listening to the spring. For the old residents of Jinan, the multi-sensory mobilization of the exhibition hall space can stimulate their memories of Jinan spring water. For foreign tourists, this method can make them feel the difficult feelings between Jinan spring water and the people of Jinan.
Introduce light on both sides of the exhibition hall through gradient glass brick walls.
Typological method to extract typical street and alley patterns in Baihuazhou.
In the exhibition hall of the Play Spring, the design extracts the type of "line" in the typical spring plane of Jinan, that is, the water surface on both sides of the human flow line, and interprets it by typology. Visitors can interact with the river lights placed on both sides of the water in the exhibition hall, thereby triggering a sense of touch. The facade of the exhibition hall is in the form of partial glass tiles, which receive soft natural light from the courtyard on both sides.
AUDITORY SENSE---LISTEN

Use the typology method to extract the type of Baihuazhou center with a lake surrounded by streets.
In the exhibition hall of Listening Spring, the design extracts and interprets the "enveloping" in Jinan's typical spring water. The main light of the exhibition hall corresponds to the visitors' line of sight, and the main lighting is carried out through the echo cylinder

In the exhibition hall of Guanquan, the design extracts the one-sided spring water model that is more common in Jinan spring water space, and forms the exhibition hall of Guanquan by translating the position relationship between spring water and people in Wulong Spring. The water curtain interface leads people's sight to the water surface and the outdoor courtyard. Plenty of light is also brought in through water curtains and skylights.

This design focuses on the micro-renewal of a market located near a railway area. The problem is framed within a community-level stakeholder interest framework, analyzing the needs of four types of stakeholders and their relationship with spatial patterns. The final decision was to utilize container module green construction methods for the market’s renovation. The renovated market’s roof creates a green infrastructure space for the community, offering corresponding ecological services. In conjunction with the cultural phenomenon of ‘checking in’ around railways, the sequence of ecological service spaces is interpreted from a landscape significance perspective.
The ground floor residential space adopts a guided leasing approach, while the market space employs a flexible shop clustering model, and the railway vicinity space is transformed into an industrial heritage garden. These three plots owned by different entities are integrated spatially under reasonable interest-driven and management models.

This design focuses on the author’s own family as the research subject, exploring the intimate relationships within the family and the problems in the use of home space. The aim is to design a residence that, through rational spatial arrangement, satisfies the diverse space needs of family members with different hobbies, while using these differences to strengthen the family’s close ties and balance hobbies with love.
14
“I can’t stand being woken up anymore.”
“Let’s custom design a new home.”
The story centers around a joyful family of three whose individual hobbies have expanded over time, surpassing the spatial limitations of their current home. The resulting clash between space and time within the household has led to arguments and sacrifices, straining their love for one another something no loving family desires. After thorough discussion, they make the decision to construct a tailor-made house that can accommodate each member's hobbies and preserve their love.

Supervisor: Lin Chen
Email Adress:Cl791211@126.com
Jinan,China
The project is based in the heart of Jinan City, Shandong, China. It involves an old auditorium located in the family housing area of the Shandong Youth University of Political Science. Known for its arts disciplines, the college’s old auditorium was once the site of many outstanding artistic performances. However, with the passage of time and the establishment of a new campus, the old auditorium has gradually been forgotten. The design aims to revitalize the auditorium by highlighting the college’s strengths in arts disciplines, allowing the auditorium to shine once again as an artists’ camp. The renovation design respects the original architecture by adding low-rise box structures. A ‘time corridor’ connects the new and old buildings, allowing visitors to experience the artistic atmosphere while appreciating the order of the old building’s trusses and the texture of its brick walls. The linear space guides visitors through an interesting journey in time.

BACKGROUND
History background
Shandong Youth Political College was founded in 1949 and has two campuses. It was formerly known as the Shandong Provincial Youth League School. Among them, the West Campus Auditorium was built in 1958
Retired professor's residential area
The west campus of Shandong Youth University of Political Science is now a teacher’s residential area, where many retired university professors of fine arts reside.
the forgotten auditorium
As time goes by, the old auditorium is gradually forgotten by everyone. The red brick walls are also covered with paint on large areas, and the environment inside is also relatively dilapidated. The east side is blocked by the parking lot.
Rebirth of artistic atmosphere
Combining the advantages of the art disciplines of Shandong Youth University of Political Science, it is planned to renovate the old auditorium and use it as an artist camp.
SITE ANALYSIS
The site is located in the old campus of the Shandong Youth University of Political Science in Lixia District, Jinan City, Shandong Province. Currently, a significant number of faculty families reside here, with some academic and office buildings host irregular artistic training and performance events. The auditorium is at the south of the main school entrance; the east side faces the school playground, now a temporary parking lot; the west side is a small garden with several trees.

STRATEGY
Remove the added parts of the original auditorium, changing the main entrance from the south to the east side to revitalize the east side of the auditorium.
Place a one-floor box volume inside and behind the outdoor area of the auditorium, forming a contrast between old and new. The outdoor one-floor volume ensures the main status of the auditorium.
Insert a ‘time corridor’ as the main traffic space, linking new and old volumes, guiding viewers’ flow, and allowing them to experience the charm of the old building and the contrast between the new and old structures.
Enhance spatial layers and site. On the west side of the auditorium, remove the roof to expose the trusses, emphasizing the facade wall battlements, and convert it into an outdoor space.

In urban public spaces, what type of micro-space is missing but needed by people?
The city, a bustling marketplace, a collection of buildings. Online and offline field research indicates that in a society with prevalent internal competition, fast pace of life, and high stress, many urban residents experience negative emotions like loss, depression, and anger, with no low-cost outlet. In current urban public spaces, micro-architecture often exists to meet functional needs, lacking care for people’s emotions. Aiming to create a space that helps the city’s lost souls heal at low cost, the team proposes the concept of a “healing” micro-space, starting from a psychological healing perspective and using flowers as a medium for design.
