North Sichuan Road is one of the most important commercial districts in Shanghai, the economic center of China. However, with the coming of information era, the insubstantial commercial activities based on network is connecting individuals with their commercial needs in a more efficient way. Under the menace of information era, I assume the open urban space to be the media which can revitalize the traditional business district by linking it with sociality. However,in the present urbanism of Shanghai, the open urban space are typically restricted on the ground level. To achieve the more effective and efficient commercial mode in this project , I studied the existing typologies of urban places in Hongkou district and upraised them with the high density complex program. After that, I studied the mutual connections with commercial vitality between different departments in a urban complex program, and interlaced the program volumes according to the parametric result of the study to optimize the urban space system.Based all this, I believe this project is a considerate proposal to revitalize the district with a new commercial mode based on the sociality of human.

HISTORY OF COMMERCE ON NORTH SICHUAN RD.

SITE ANALYSIS

North Sichuan Road is located in the west part of Shanghai downtown. In 1877,with the construction of the road system, it grew up gradually and became one of the most important commercial streets in Shanghai. However ,in the last decade, the commercial vitality of North Sichuan Road has declining rapidly.

North Sichuan Road is connected with metro line3 through the site. After studied the condition of whole site area, I found that presently open public places are always restricted on the ground level. As a result, we can see a decline of social activity from ground level to high-rise offices.

INTERLACING WITH THREE DIMENSIONAL WOOL THREAD ALGORITHM Activity Pattern Of Urban Complex Program The wool threads experiment is a physical method discovered by German architect Frei O tto to optimize the planar pathways. To justify the upraised urban places, I researched the active degree of program in different time and the corresponding circular relations, then simplified these relations into points and lines. I developed the wool threads experiment i n to t h re e - d i m e n s i o n w i t h co m pu t a t i o n a l stimulation, and tried to spotimize the linear results of program research.

After simplified these relations into points and lines, I sitimulated the wool threads experiment in 3-dimension with computation, then I combined the coding results and the complex program. According to the algorithmic results, I optimized the shape and connecting spaces to produce the considerate pathes for more communication and efficency.

THE URBAN COMPLEX OF COMMERCE AND SOCIALITY In this studio work , I tried to discuss the relationship between the partial media interaction and the whole media intention by interlacing the urban open spaces which mediates individuals and sociality with the commercial complex program which mediates individuals with commercial needs. Based on our research, we conceived the urban open space to be the media between social activity and commercial behavior. This open spatial system works as a partial media to vitalize the whole system of commercial complex by adding new media interactions of sociality.

0 2 | FRAME OF COMMUNITY [‌ Creative & Residential Community Project] Spring Semester Of 2016 Site:Yangpu,Shanghai,China Individual Studio Work of Architecture & Urban Planning Instructor:Yi Dong, Jiajing Zhang Honorable Mention in Chinese Contest of the Rookies’ Award

This is a experimental joint studio of Architecture and Urban Planning Depar tment, which aims to design throughly and coherently from housing scale to urban scale. In This studio, I tried to discuss how similar strategies on different scales mediates different relations. The site is located aside the campus of Tongji University, Shanghai which is a center of creative industry. Sourrounded by creative institutions and enterprises ,this project has a complex program of community and incubator to serve start-up entrepreneurs working and living in a efficient mode. Meanwhile, as a open community with commercial function, I also conceived this project providing high quality public space to the whole area for more effective interactions. To achieve the program, I started to rethink architecture and the city as the materialized media . After the investigation of creative industry and internet makers, I applied the concept of a frame from the building scale to the urban scale, mediating the individual lifestyle with building units, and the creative industry with urban environment.

To fulfill the multiple demand and mediates the complex program, I conceived two frame system on the ground level and the upper level.

The Upper Level Frame

The upper level frame is organized by the landscape pavement, connecting the spaces for leisure, exhibit and social. The ground level frame is organized by the community street, connecting the spaces for commerce, exhibit , catering and other public services. Due to the limit of FAR(floor/area rate), there will be a waste of land in this site. Hence, I add archi-frames into the the frame system, which presently can works as the canopy of open spaces, and have the potential to be the structure for the future expansion.

Fill the housing frame with spaces of dwelling, studio and exhibit.

Frame of Community

Fill the block frame with the housing units and independent shop units.

0 3 | DISENCHANTED ADDITION [‌ Boutique Hotel Project Of Rehabilitation] Fall Semester Of 2016 Site:Hongku,Shanghai,China Individual Studio Work of Preservation & Rehabilitation Instructor:Hongjun Wang

In this studio on preservation and rehabilitation, I discussed how the additional parts in rehabilitation can work as the media to change the occupant's prospective to look upon the heritage. The existing building located in a historic area of Shanghai downtown was built by Jewish developer in 1920s as apartments and school. In the following years, this building was used with different programs and finally abandoned in recent decades. With the new proposal which is to rehabilitate this building into a boutique hotel, I tried to partly re-defined the value of this building as delicate craftwork with historic memory . Hence I conceived the concept of disenchanted addtion to be the media with the schemes of transparency, translucency and reflection to emphasize this altering of value and program. With this idea, I tried to mediates the relationship between the architectural heritage, urban environment and occupants delicately, without adding any new symbolic meaning. Hence,as regards the preservation, my main strategy is to refurbish the brick wall and other architectural details into the original and essential status yet with the imprint of age.

HISTORY AND PRESENT SITUATION OF THE BUILDING

SITE ANALYSIS

The existing building located in a historic area of Shanghai downtown was built by Jewish developer in 1920s as an apartment building. In 1930s this building served as a mission school for Russia children. After 1950, when the communism ruled China, this building has been used as public social house and printing house. In the following years, this building was used with different programs and finally abandoned in recent decades. Presently, although it’s bricks has been partly damaged, this building is overall well preserved and has a remarkable heritage value.

Yulin is a neighbourhood north of Suzhou Creek that served as a Jewish ghetto during the Japanese occupation in World War II that has remained very Chinese amidst the changes taking place throughout much of the city. Low, crowded and unpolished, it's a great place just to walk around, eat, shop and be stared at.

04 | VERNACULAR MONUMENTALITY [‌ The Nujiang Vernacular Cathedral Project] Spring Semester Of 2016 Site:Nujiang,Yunnan,China Collaborative Study Project With Qin Sizhi Contribution: All

Religious architecture is a kind of media which communicating the individuals with the universal spirit.' The Nujiang Cathedral' is a project set in one of the settlements of ethnic people. It proposes a combination between the monumentality alongside the connatural vernacular . This project intends to make visible and integrate the localization of Christian faith, through a bottom-up construction based on the vernacular culture and history . A strategic site is chosen in the Laomudeng village, which is a Lisu and Nu settlement located by the side of Nujiang River with a percentage of Christian over 90% . This mountainous area has a labyrinthian missionary history which started nearly 100 years ago. The Christian belief spread fast at that time with the work of early preachers which not only improved the local living standards but also de-idolized the traditional customs and combined it with Christian faith. Even the connection to external church was obstructed by political reasons since 1950s,this area keeps the specificity of national traditions with Christian faith.

However, it is still too narrow and can't show the particularity of local Christian faith.

James Fraser, a missionary of China Inland Mission, is the one who successfully preached Ch r i s t i a n d o c tr i n e s i n t h e Nujiang area. CONCEPT

The site is located in a vernacular ethnic minority area of Nujiang great canyon. The topography led to a peculiar agricultural mode of terrace field. As a autonomous region by ethinic groups, the ratio of people who hold a Christian belief is over 90%, and Laomudeng is the regional faith center. I chose a unique site for this project on the expansion of the original church in Laomudeng village, which is the faith center of Nujiang area. This site is embracing the lake on the slop, and surrounded by the ethinic settlements, terrace fields and bamboo forest.

According to the research of site and cases, I conceived the concept to achieve the monumentality,on the basis of vernacular elements from the site and the culture. I tried study the relations between vernacular elements and cathedral elements, and design this project as the materialized media to emphysize these relations. Chapel

SHAPE MORPHOSIS On account of the steep topography, Nujiang people not only developed their cultivation with terrace fields but also built their dwellings on the slop with stilts. Taking these typologies as reference, I lifted the platforms as terrace fields with the stilts of lithoid plinth, which is the material of retaining wall of field. Then I morphed the pitched roofs of local dwelling according to the topography of slop, reinforced the climbing circulation to the main hall with rituality.
