Hola! I’m Kajal Makhijani motivated, ambitious, reliable, enterprising, and a team player. I’ve completed my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture last year(June 2020). I’m intrigued by the sense of difference that we as designers can make in the community. Architecture, for me is an art of making a space, which is defined by it’s purpose and influenced from it’s roots. I find it constructive and stimulating to confront myself to a new place and grasp the learnings. The exposure of practicing in the field has helped me to work well both in team and individually.

This project aimed at understanding the relationship between working environment and the built environment as office’s are a place for vital output and growth. The project location is Hyderabad which is also known as ‘Cyber Hub’.

Project Brief Location : Hyderabad, Telengana Climate : Hot and arid Site Area : 11.3 acre Occupancy : 800

Concept The concept is linear variation in modules which consists of open planning designated to each office. A linear balcony attacthed to the pantry along with outdoor space for the working category to relax. Modelling of the facade along east, west depicted by a brick wall. 02 Commercial Design | Hyderabad 2018 Design Principles

Idea

1. Effective use of space - By having access to natural light, collaborative spaces and private meeting rooms where people will feel free to move around andwon’t feel tied to their desks, creating more opportunities for creative collaboration.

Movement Employees are more alert after taking a walk or having an insightful conversation with a colleague.

2. Productivity - By having workplaces that are beautiful andinteresting, employees become more productive with an environment that is inspiring and putting. 3 Collaboration - Employees in this environment which is a mix of different departments are bouncing off ideas, and people are coming together instead of working in silos to solve problems.

2020 PORTFOLIO

Urban design studio aimed at understanding the bigger picture of the old city area of Vadodara and hence finding appropriate solution through designing. The city area of Vadodara has strong historic grid pattern and is tight knit which fosters walking throughout the old city area but at the same time causing a haphazard vehicular movement.

Project Brief Location Area

: Vadodara, Gujarat : Raopura and Salatwada

Concept The ideology is balancing the existing uses of street, enhancing user experience, increasing pedestrian safety by maintaining consistent travel lanes, providing various insert’s including pause area’s, parklets, extended sidewalks and providing dedicated and paved bus, auto’s, and parking bays.

15

03 Urban planning | Vadodara 2018 About Raopura is the second CBD area of Vadodara city. Once main commercial and business centre of the city with major historical attractions such as Chimnabai tower and Kuber Bhawan, now changed with time, loosing it’s character with haphazard construction.

Then

Concern Over time, there are several major challenges, including inadequate design and planning, poor maintenance standards and inefficient utility management. Also the user experience have sensed to be diminished with vendors utilising pedestrian area’s to extend their given limits. The building frontages should be engaging with the users. Sidewalks, pedestrian crossings must offer a continuous clear path ensuring safety of the commuters. There are old settlements of communities which become the interior part between two busy roads. The branching of roads accessing these areas are violated by haphazard vehicular movement and parking.

Automobile Provision store Eatery Residential Raopura street

Methodology

Salatwada street

Vadodara’s core city has a loop form of street network

Loop pattern observed and all the roads are two-way conventionally.

This creates traffic issues due to two way traffic on narrow road leading to congestion

To and from core city to developed areas

Road connecting to the centre of the city (Sursagar)

To and from core city to developed areas

Taking advantage of the formation of loops in existing fabric.

Streamlined movement of traffic which facilitates market experience.

17

03 Urban planning | Vadodara 2018 Bringing Characteristics of an Urban Street 1. Safe pedestrian movements 2. Well-lit paths 3. Desired parking area 4. Pause area with urban furniture 5. Buffer zone immediately next to sidewalk consisting of storm water management features with curbing, parklets and parking 6. Providing space for street vendors

Design Elements

Sidewalks

Design Principles

Curbing

Steets are a public space

It plays a major role in life of communities and should be designed keeping the aspect in mind.

Great Streets are great for business

Well designed streets generate higher revenues for businesses and higher values for home-owners

Speed Controlling Elements

Parklets

Steets are ecosystem

Design for safety

Street should be designed as ecosystem where manmade systems interface with natural systems. Storm-water run-off to street trees which are critical for health of cities.

Using a phased approach to major redesigns, where interim materials are used in the short term and later replaced by permanent materials once the public has tested the design thoroughly.

Twin’s Home Residential Project

Project Brief: The client wanted a house for him and his brother’s family in a way that both can enjoy their privacies while enjoying leisure time together.

Learnings: This was my first architecture project that i had worked on as a coarchitect. It was a designing project so we required crucial management and co-ordination with the client and the agencies. Also, knowing various materials and it’s details, learning cost estimation and importance of BOQ’s.
