A Hero’s Life

Friday, November 14, 2014 | 8pm Miller Auditorium Raymond Harvey, Conductor Susie Park, Violin

Beethoven Strauss

Symphony No. 8 in F, Op. 93 Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 is paired with Strauss’s tone poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) in a program tied to the love interests of their respective composers. The summer of 1812 marked the famous (and un-sent) letters to Beethoven’s “immortal beloved.” In Strauss’s semi-autobiographical work, a solo violin portrays the composer’s complex and quixotic wife.

Heavenly Life

Saturday, February 21, 2015 | 8pm Miller Auditorium Raymond Harvey, Conductor Andriana Chuchman, Soprano Mahler Mahler

With its generally sunny disposition and numerous references to nature, Symphony No. 4 has often been referred to as Mahler’s own Pastoral Symphony. The last movement of this transcendently beautiful work is a quiet lullaby describing Heaven through the innocent eyes of a child.

Michael Christie

Saturday, March 28, 2015 | 8pm Miller Auditorium Michael Christie, Guest Conductor Arnaldo Cohen, Piano

Tchaikovsky Berlioz Debussy

Rückert-Lieder Symphony No. 4

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 Overture to Benvenuto Cellini La Mer (“The Sea”)

From the thundering opening chords of Tchaikovsky’s fiery first piano concerto to its triumphant conclusion, this most Russian of all piano concerti dazzles the listener with sheer brilliance. Debussy’s La Mer paints an impressionistic look at the power of the sea.

Elijah

Friday, April 10, 2015 | 8pm Miller Auditorium Raymond Harvey, Conductor Western Michigan University Grand Chorus, Kimberly Dunn Adams, Director

Mendelssohn

Elijah, Op. 70

Since its enthusiastic premiere in 1846, Elijah has assured its place in the choral repertoire as second only to Handel’s Messiah. Recounting the Old Testament story as told in the Book of Kings, this powerful work is a vivid depiction of scenes from the prophet’s life.
