Inside front - First National Bank
Melissa Gilbert, Assistant Vice President First National Bank of Michigan, with Troy Thrash, President and CEO of the Air Zoo, in the new flight simulators.
One local bank always reaches for the stars. A long-time First National Bank of Michigan customer, the Air Zoo trusts their local bank to help them fuel the imagination of visitors. “We work together to benefit the community,” Troy Thrash said. Needing to upgrade 11-year-old technology and purchase new flight simulators, the Air Zoo turned to Melissa Gilbert to develop the final financing package. “First National Bank of Michigan believes in us and enables our mission to reach for the stars.”

FROM THE
MUSIC DIRECTOR Some like it rare; some like it well done. In either case, we’ve got just the thing for you. Welcome to an evening with the Kalamazoo Symphony! Even though music is present in so much of our life, it’s rare to experience it live. There’s nothing quite like it. The KSO’s goal is to give you something you can’t get at home or in your car. RAYMOND HARVEY
This season is packed with outstanding guest artists: pianist Yefim Bronfman, organist Cameron Carpenter, violinist Liza Ferschtman, to name only a few. And we’ll complement these artists with music of Mendelssohn, Bartók, and Tchaikovsky. We’re especially excited to offer Mahler’s powerful “Tragic” Symphony in February; and you’ll be swept up by Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni as our season finale in May. We’ve been expanding our repertoire lately. You can hear the KSO in the music of Motown, Marvin Hamlisch, and the traditional Sounds of the Season in December. Join us in an intimate setting for chamber music and beverages. Learn about the world of Rossini and Smetana, two fascinating composers. And bring your child or your childlike spirit to our full-length Disney® movie presentation of Ratatouille with live orchestra. It’s rare for a community the size of Kalamazoo to be able to boast having an orchestra of such high caliber. As we enter our 96th season, we’re rightfully proud of our talented musicians and their commitment to great art. We’re eager to engage your senses with memorable experiences in the concert hall. There aren’t too many things that can be called rare and well-done. A performance by the Kalamazoo Symphony is guaranteed to be both. Enjoy the concert!

FROM THE
BOARD CHAIR Welcome to the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra’s 96th season! This season is full of excellent programming with our talented music director and fantastic musicians. Whether you like classical music, educational opportunities, family activities, movies, pop music or just love the symphony, the KSO has something for everyone. And the KSO team JANICE M. is working very hard to provide this diverse selection BROWN of music to attract and grow our audiences as well as appreciate our devoted followers. It is a pleasure to bring the KSO Board and its team of world class musicians to this season for my second year as board chair. Admittedly, I was reluctant to accept this responsibility at first, but the learning and enjoyment of this beautiful music has made the commitment well worth my time. The KSO family, including administration, orchestra members, board members, and friends of the KSO, has been reflecting on the second year in which we’ve been guided by our latest strategic plan. It is wonderful to watch our CEO and Music Director meet the challenge of planning more exciting music year after year. We can’t do this work without all of you, so as we work to implement the expressed desires and ideas from the community, we welcome continued input from you. Let us know about your concert experiences – how are we making waves in your musical world? Our award winning orchestra has always been a great source of pride for our community. In four short years we will celebrate our 100th anniversary. This year, we will begin seriously planning for this gala event. If you have an interest in planning, or even ideas about what you would like to see, please let us know. We are putting together a strong team of community, musicians, etc to help in this endeavor. We want to make the 100th the best celebration ever! This is also a special opportunity to thank our audiences and our loyal patrons. Our ticket sales only pay for a small portion of the cost of putting on these complex and highly sophisticated concerts. So a sincere thank you goes to all those who attend, listen and especially support the work that we do. As a non-musician myself, I’m involved for the pure joy that the KSO music brings to my life; and we have many to thank for that. Enjoy each and every performance you attend. Warmly,
Janice M. Brown 2016 | 2017 Season

FROM THE
PRESIDENT & CEO I am very excited, and honored, to welcome you back and to celebrate the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra’s 96th season! It is a pleasure to work with our talented musicians, our phenomenal Music Director, Raymond Harvey, as well as the KSO’s newly appointed Resident Conductor, Daniel Brier. PETER H. GISTELINCK
The KSO is also fortunate to have the support of an extremely dedicated and highly motivated staff, Board of Directors, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra League (KSOL) and the KSO Ambassadors. It is truly an honor to serve our patrons: donors, subscribers, single ticket holders, and our corporate sponsors. These dedicated and committed individuals make this a wonderful and very supportive community. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first two years as the President & CEO of this fine orchestra and feel blessed to have been invited by the Board of Directors to extend my contract through the 2021-2022 concert season. Over the past two years we have reached out to our community and received valuable feedback which laid a solid foundation for our strategic vision, which will guide us into our 100th anniversary in 2020-2021. We have adapted our mission statement accordingly; To serve our community through outstanding musical listening and learning experiences. As we want our strategic plan to be available at all times for the community we have made it accessible for you on our website www.kalamazoosymphony.com. We are proud to continue our alliance with Naxos, the world’s leading classical music group, which will result in releasing more of our archival concert recordings — going back to the mid-50s! The KSO has also extended its alliance with Kalamazoo’s Public Media Network (PMN) for video recordings of all of our classical concerts for local broadcast via cable. As you can see from this season’s program book, we have designed another stirring and diverse concert season, including several national debuts and premieres. Our musicians and guest artists will bring you brilliant artistry and inspiring performances that will most definitely charm and entertain our broad audience. I look forward to seeing you again over the course of the season and, on behalf of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, thank you for your continued patronage. Cheers to another sensational concert season! Sincerely,
Peter H. Gistelinck 2016 | 2017 Season

KAL AMAZOO KIDS IN TUNE Kalamazoo Kids in Tune is a daily after-school “orchestra immersion” program offered at KPS Woods Lake Elementary, in collaboration with Communities in Schools of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo Public Schools. Students in grades 1-5 choose instruments to study and participate in daily lessons and orchestra rehearsals. Each day includes a nutritious meal and assisted homework time. Program “graduates” in 6th-8th grade return to the program as KKIT Leaders twice per week to mentor younger children and continue their studies. By learning to play instruments in an ensemble setting, students are developing a sense of community and building mastery and resilience: skills that make music study rewarding, and also contribute to success in the classroom.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE In 1995, as part of the 75th anniversary celebration of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, a commitment was made to develop four full-time positions that would both enable the orchestra to create community and education programs and strengthen the orchestra ensemble. The Artist in Residence program began with the KSO Burdick-Thorne String Quartet. Subsequently, the program has expanded to include Artist in Residence positions in winds, brass and percussion. These outstanding performers provide a strong artistic core for the orchestra, and serve as musical ambassadors and teaching artists. They bring the excitement of symphonic music into the community through performances and residencies that serve over 45,000 people across southwest Michigan each year.

Liza Ferschtman Dutch violinist, Liza Ferschtman, is renowned for her passionate performances, superlative musicianship, and imaginative programming. Following her sensational performance with the Budapest Festival Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall in 2013, she made her U.S. orchestral debut this spring with the Dallas Symphony and Jaap van Zweden, playing the Bernstein Serenade, which inspired the New York Times reviewer to write, “... with Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman bringing refined beauty and character to the solo part of the Bernstein ... the concert was nothing short of revelatory.” In July, she made her San Francisco Symphony debut, playing her “signature” work, the Beethoven Violin Concerto, with Edwin Outwater. Among Ms. Ferschtman’s recent concert highlights are performances of the complete solo works by Bach at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as playing and conducting the Beethoven Concerto at the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. Her current season includes performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Belgique/Brussels, and the Weimar Staatskapelle at the Richard Strauss Festival. She will also perform a solo recital tour across The Netherlands. Liza Ferschtman has performed with many prestigious Philharmonics, Symphonies and Orchestras throughout the world including appearances with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. An avid chamber musician and recitalist, Ms. Ferschtman has performed at such venues as Alice Tully Hall/New York, the Library of Congress/Washington, and the Wigmore Hall in London. Since 2007, Ms. Ferschtman has been the Artistic Director of the Delft Chamber Music Festival. During her tenure, the festival has become widely renowned for its adventurous programming and dynamic performances. Ms. Ferschtman’s recording of the Beethoven Concerto and Romances was reviewed with great critical acclaim, as were other recordings with concertos by Dvorák and Röntgen, solo works by Bach and Ysaÿe, and duo works by Beethoven and Schubert. Her most recent album for Challenge Classics includes works for solo violin by Bach, Biber, Bartók and Berio. 2016 | 2017 Season

Ellis Hall Born in Savannah, Georgia, Ellis Hall is an accomplished and prolific performer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with a five-octave range. Diagnosed with glaucoma as an infant, Hall would eventually lose his sight completely. While at Perkins School for the Blind, he mastered the bass, guitar, keyboards, piano, and drums. Mr. Hall has had a career spanning over four decades. Hall has solidified a reputation for soulsearing rhythm & blues, has electrified audiences throughout the world and made his mark as an incredible songwriter, arranger, and producer. Following many notable achievements in the world of professional performance, Hall moved to Los Angeles, California in 1984 to broaden his musical horizons and quickly became a first call session player, lending his vocal and instrumental prowess for many projects. He has performed with a multitude of musical icons, including Kenny G, Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, James Taylor, and his musical Mentor, Ray Charles. In 2001, Ellis met the legendary musical icon Ray Charles, who was so taken with Hall’s performance power that he took the artist under his wing and signed Hall as the only other artist on his label Crossover Records. Hall went on to work with Charles on the album Straight Ahead, featuring an array of guest artists and garnering a top single, Gotta Get the Money. Hall’s time with Charles, whom he fondly called Papa Ray, left an indelible impression. Following the icon’s death in 2004, he created a show called A Tribute to Ray Charles, Motown, and Beyond. He envisioned it as homage to his mentor that would celebrate their shared R&B roots and deep passion for the heart and soul of music. Hall has performed his show of key Motown and Ray Charles hits with symphony orchestras across the US and Canada. He considers the show not an imitation or emulation, but a soul celebration, and includes his own original works for the enjoyment of his audience.

Kalamazoo Children’s Chorus The Kalamazoo Children’s Chorus has been providing outstanding choral music to our community for over 36 years. Starting as a single choir in 1980, the Kalamazoo Children’s Chorus is now five choirs strong and KCC students range from 3rd grade to 12th grade. Each year about 200 children, ages 8 to 18, learn and perform in an atmosphere of artistic excellence, and by so doing, enrich the artistic life of our community. The Touring Choir is KCC’s most experienced choir, made up of an auditioned ensemble of middle and high school children under the artistic direction of Fred Sang. The Touring Choir has collaborated with every major musical organization in Kalamazoo and has sung with many artists who visit Kalamazoo to perform at Miller Auditorium and other venues. Over the years they have also shared the stage with: Numazu Boys and Girls Choir (Japan), Bloemfontein Children’s Choir (South Africa), St. Mary’s Children’s Chorus (Canada) and The Young People’s Chorus of New York City (America). Singing a varied repertoire of sacred and secular music, the Touring Choir has sung throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. In 2013 they performed in Rome, Florence, Mezza Villa, and in Venice at the Bacillica of St. Mark’s. The Touring Choir of the Kalamazoo Children’s Chorus thanks the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Raymond Harvey for the opportunity to create inspiring music together in the 2016-2017 season.

Susan Hammond Susan has created a whole new generation of classical music fans through her innovative and award-winning Classical Kids recordings. She is the executive producer of a 16 title series of children’s classical music recordings known collectively as Classical Kids, selling to date nearly 5 million CDs, DVDs and books worldwide, and earning over 100 prestigious awards and honors. Each story entails its own adventure featuring a unique combination of music, history, and theatricality to engage the imaginations of children. Susan holds the philosophy that, “Where the heart goes, the mind will follow.” An accomplished concert pianist and music teacher, Hammond searched for recordings about classical music to share with her young daughters. One day, she sat reading to her girls with a classical music radio station on in the background and noticed how they responded to the literature in a different way when enhanced by music. The rest, as they say, is history. Performing more than a thousand concerts to over 2 million audience members, Ms. Hammond’s “Classical Kids” continue to garner critical and commercial acclaim throughout North America and abroad as the best way to introduce children (and adults) to the lives and musical masterpieces of the great classical composers. Susan is the recipient of Billboard Magazine’s International Achievement Award and resides with her husband in Toronto where she is a member of the Order of Canada for her contribution to the arts.

Michael Giacchino Michael Giacchino has fast become one of the best-known and most successful composers working in Hollywood today. His credits feature some of the most popular and acclaimed film projects in recent history, including The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Giacchino’s 2009 score for the Pixar hit Up earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe, the BAFTA, the Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Award and two GRAMMY® Awards. Giacchino began his filmmaking career at the age of 10 in his backyard in Edgewater Park, New Jersey, and eventually went on to study filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. After college, he landed a marketing job at Disney and began studies in music composition, first at Juilliard and then at UCLA. From marketing, he became a producer in the fledgling Disney Interactive Division where he had the opportunity to write music for video games. After moving to a producing job at the newly formed DreamWorks Interactive division, he was asked to score the temp track for the video game adaptation of The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Impressed, Steven Spielberg hired him as the composer and it became the first PlayStation game to have a live orchestral score. Giacchino continued writing for video games and became well known for his Medal of Honor scores. Giacchino’s work in video games sparked the interest of J.J. Abrams, and thus began their long standing relationship that would lead to scores for the hit television series Alias and LOST, and the feature films Mission Impossible III, Star Trek, Super 8, and Star Trek Into Darkness. Additional projects include collaborations with Disney Imagineering on music for Space Mountain, Star Tours (with John Williams) and the Ratatouille ride in Disneyland Paris. Giacchino also was the Musical Director of the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Currently, his music can be

heard in concert halls internationally with both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness films being performed live to picture with a full orchestra. Last summer, Michael had three major films hit theaters: Disney’s Tomorrowland, directed by Brad Bird, Pete Docter’s Inside Out from Pixar, and Universal’s Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow. Giacchino sits on the Advisory Board of Education Through Music Los Angeles.

Cameron Carpenter Cameron Carpenter is having a ball smashing the stereotypes of organists and organ music, and all the while generating international acclaim and controversy unprecedented in his field. Cameron’s repertoire — from the complete works of J. S. Bach to film scores, his original compositions and hundreds of transcriptions and arrangements — is probably the largest and most diverse of any organist. He is the first ‘concert organist’ in history to prefer the digital organ to the pipe organ, and to champion it as the future of the instrument. In 2014, Cameron launched his International Touring Organ — a monumental cross-genre digital organ built by Marshall & Ogletree to his own design — in extensive tours in Europe and the USA. His Sony Music debut album If You Could Read My Mind entered Billboard’s Traditional Classical chart at No. 1 on its US release. A former child prodigy, Cameron Carpenter trained at the American Boychoir School, the North Carolina School of the Arts and has two degrees from The Juilliard School. He holds the 2012 Leonard Bernstein Award, is the first solo organist ever nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for a solo album, and has appeared with many of the great orchestras around the world; he has spoken and debated at think tanks and conferences including TED, IdeaCity, The Entertainment Gathering, and many more. PLANNED GIVING Your support of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra is of tremendous value to us. There are many ways to give that can also return benefits to you. Whether it’s a bequest in your will or trust, a charitable gift annuity, or naming the KSO as a beneficiary of your retirement fund, planned gifts support the KSO’s long-term fiscal stability. All planned giving donors become members of The Leta Snow Legacy Society, named in honor of the founder of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. PLANNED GIVING OPTIONS • Naming the KSO in your will or trust to receive a percentage of your estate. After making provisions for your family and friends, this is the most common form of planned giving. Our legal name is Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, a Michigan not-for-profit organization, and our federal tax identification number is 38-6005710. • Naming the KSO as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or IRA account. This arrangement can help your heirs avoid taxes which are due when any retirement asset is redeemed. • Establish a charitable gift annuity with the KSO that pays you a quarterly dividend. You will receive regular income at attractive investment rates and will likely be entitled to tax savings. The multitude of giving options is extremely varied and quite personal. The KSO staff is available to provide you with suggestions for gifts that fit your philanthropic goals. Please contact our Vice President of Development & Communications, Suzanne Day Weeldreyer, to begin a conversation about your plan and how you can support the KSO in a way that honors your love for the symphony. 269-349.7759 or sweeldreyer@kalamazoosymphony.com

Who is Leta Snow? The Leta Snow Legacy Society is named in honor of Leta G. Snow, our institutional visionary. Leta G. Snow founded the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra in 1921. She served as its president and manager for over 28 years, doing everything from selling advertisements and tickets, running patron fundraisers, and even occasionally playing piano, string instruments, or flute in the orchestra. In 1942, Leta Snow organized a meeting in Chicago of 40 orchestra leaders to exchange ideas and support American orchestras which resulted in the establishment of the League of American Orchestras. She served as the organization’s president for its first four years. In 2008, Leta Snow was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame and recognized with the Historical Honors Award presented by the Michigan Women’s Studies Association. 2016 | 2017 Season
