from the resident conductor interim music director

W elcome to S eason 97 Now that you’ve found your seat and are beginning to browse this program book, I want to personally welcome you to an evening with the Kalamazoo Symphony. You may be here, because, like me, you love the great masterworks. This season we perform symphonies by Beethoven, Bernstein, Brahms, Bruckner, Prokofiev, DANIEL BRIER Tchaikovsky, and Walker. We are also excited to feature renowned guest artists and guest conductors to our stage. I hope you’ll attend each of these Symphonic Series programs and consider bringing a friend. Come to think of it, if you wish the young people in your life could experience the magic of the orchestra, bring them to our popular Family Discovery concerts. I guarantee you will love the concert too! Alternately, you may just be here for a new movie experience and find that you are watching the orchestra more than the movie. (It’s more common than you think.) If so, you’ll definitely want to come back to a Symphonic Series concert where the focus rests exclusively on our wonderful orchestra. You may also be interested in our Zhang Financial Pops! programs featuring All-4-One and the music of ABBA or want to check out our Classics Uncorked at the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts and Classics On Tap at Bell’s Brewery. You’ll hear exciting music and find yourself in close proximity to the musicians, all while you enjoy your favorite beverage. Lastly, if you’re interested in social issues and expanding your musical horizons, why don’t you join us as we explore the significant contributions of black composers throughout history. You can find out more about this special project on page 52. As you look through this program book, you’ll notice that this, our 97th season is filled with incredible music—music that brings us together. I hope you will explore all this wonderful music with us and expand your own horizons along the way. Enjoy the performance!

from the

B oard C hair I am honored to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and pleased to invite you to Embrace your KSO during this 97th concert season. As the Chair, I am excited to oversee the efforts to support and nurture this orchestra, which will celebrate 100 years in STEVEN this community very soon. As we near that centennial, we KREIDER are working to realize the goals set forth in the most recent strategic plan the KSO crafted in 2015. A committee of Board members, musician representatives, and staff meet regularly to review the plan goals and objectives. These reviews are not only meant to keep us on target in achieving the original goals set forth in the plan but also to heighten our awareness of the importance of constant evaluation and the need to set new goals as the orchestra continues to grow and change. It is gratifying to know that we have achieved many of those original goals, and that the KSO team continues to forge ahead with energy in setting new objectives to help us realize all the benchmarks we’ve set for ourselves. The exciting transition that will take place at the end of this season with a new Music Director will give us even more energy for the future. The Board will also have the pleasurable task of celebrating this incredibly important milestone in the KSO story, while seeking to financially support this orchestra into its next 100 years. By the time you read this, the 100th Anniversary Committee will be actively creating and planning a wonderful community celebration and an ambitious campaign to fund the artistic and education aspirations of the KSO into the future. We’ll be asking you, our community of patrons, donors and friends, to help us in these efforts. We welcome your ideas and your support. The KSO has always been a source of great pride for this community and we are grateful for the steadfast support of our audiences, donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Without their generous support, the KSO would not be able to achieve the high level of excellence you’ve come to expect in the concert hall, classrooms, and in venues throughout our community. Thank you. Enjoy the performance tonight, and every night you share with us. Warmly,

Steven Kreider 2017 | 2018 Season

from the

P resident & CEO I am excited to welcome you back as we celebrate the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra’s 97th concert season!

PETER H. GISTELINCK

We are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated and highly motivated musicians, staff, Board of Directors, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra League (KSOL), Ambassadors and patrons: donors, subscribers, single ticket holders, and corporate sponsors! These dedicated and committed individuals make this a wonderful and supportive community and are key to the KSO’s success.

The 2017-2018 concert season is a very important one as we finalize our search for the KSO’s next Music Director. We’ve invited five extremely talented Music Director candidates who will each visit Kalamazoo for a week to conduct a Symphonic Series concert and spend a full week with our Orchestra and the Kalamazoo community. In order of appearance the candidates are Maestros Donato Cabrera, Edwin Outwater, Andrew Grams, Stilian Kirov and Julian Kuerti. The next KSO Music Director will be announced by the end of June 2018. However, we will not do so without consulting our patrons. Expect to receive an opportunity to participate in an in-depth, online survey for each of our candidates throughout the season. Your comments are very valuable to us and will be taken into serious consideration for the appointment of our next Music Director. In the midst of that exciting task, we continue to implement our Strategic Plan and begin preparations for our 100th anniversary season in 2020-2021. We are proud to continue releasing new and archival concert recordings, going back to the mid-50’s, through our alliance with Naxos, the world’s leading classical music group. The KSO has also extended its partnership with Kalamazoo’s Public Media Network (PMN) for video recordings of all our Symphonic and Zhang Financial Pops! Series concerts for broadcast via local cable. We have designed another stirring and diverse concert season for you, including several national debuts and premieres. Our musicians and guest artists will bring brilliant artistry and inspiring performances to charm and entertain you. On behalf of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, thank you for your continued patronage. Cheers to another sensational concert season!

YOUTH CONCERTS In a 30-year tradition, KSO invites area elementary schools to participate free of charge in the KSO Youth Concert program. These engaging concerts introduce masterworks of orchestral music to young audiences and support student learning in the music classroom. Curriculum guides designed by experienced music teachers, along with a CD of concert repertoire, are delivered to participating schools in the fall. After weeks of listening and learning, the program culminates in a spring field trip to the beautiful Chenery Auditorium, where students experience the power and excitement of the KSO performing live. KALAMAZOO KIDS IN TUNE Kalamazoo Kids in Tune is a daily after-school “orchestra immersion” program offered at KPS Woods Lake Elementary: A Magnet Center for the Arts and Milwood Magnet School, in collaboration with Communities in Schools of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo Public Schools. Students in grades 2-8 study instruments and participate in daily lessons and orchestra rehearsals. Each day includes a nutritious meal and assisted homework time. Selected middle school students return to the elementary program as KKIT Leaders twice per week to mentor younger children. By learning to play instruments in an ensemble setting, students are developing a sense of community and building mastery and resilience: skills that make music study rewarding, and also contribute to success in the classroom. “Kalamazoo In Tune” events invite musicians of all ages from the community to join the KKIT orchestra on special Community Play Days throughout the year. KKIT has been nationally recognized as a new member of the PlayUSA program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute and as a finalist for the 2017 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

In addition to his support of emerging composers, Daniel has recently conducted works written by contemporary masters including George Walker, Jennifer Higdon, John Adams, Mason Bates, Jessie Montgomery, and more. In 2016, he commissioned and conducted the world premiere of Daniel Capelletti’s, The Night Before Christmas, with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. 2017 | 2018 programming note

KSO Embraces Music of Black Composers This past year, I was thinking about an issue that many consider a problem in the symphony orchestra world—lack of diversity. Yes, it is a buzzword. I believe diversity remains an extremely important issue to address. Orchestras have worked diligently to welcome performers of various ethnicities onto our stages. With the help of organizations like the Sphinx organization in Detroit, much progress has been made particularly with minorities. However, so much more is yet to be done. Is there something we can do here in Kalamazoo? After some research, I realized the industry continues to neglect one important piece of the puzzle. Orchestras do a good job of featuring music written by minority composers but do a very poor job of integrating this music into the core programming. For instance, the music of black composers is often featured on special series particularly in the month of February. Rarely, if ever is this music programmed next to Beethoven and Brahms on the regular subscription series. In an art form that serves the composer, many important masterful voices remain unheard. I decided to do something about this. During this season, we will perform 20 works by 8 different black composers--four of whom are still living—encompassing over 240 years of music history. Rather than creating a separate series, I decided to program this wonderful music where it belongs—on the symphonic series, classics series, community series, and educational concerts. I hope you are able to hear all these great pieces!

Daniel Brier

E dwin O utwater Edwin Outwater is Director of Summer Concerts at the San Francisco Symphony (SFS), and was recently appointed Artistic Director of the Eastern Sierra Symphony, a summer festival in Mammoth Lakes, California. After a remarkable decade as Music Director of the KitchenerWaterloo Symphony (KWS), he begins as Conductor Laureate in 2017. Equally adept at interpreting canonical masterworks, premiering new commissions, and connecting audiences with repertoire beyond the mainstream, the American conductor is, as San Francisco Classical Voice notes, “headed for a top-tier future.” Outwater’s final season as Music Director of the KWS continued their groundbreaking Intersections concerts, exploring the relationship between music and science in a collaboration with the Institute for Quantum Computing and cellist, Johannes Moser. In his third year with SFS, Outwater led the orchestra in performances including Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and a multi-concert collaboration with jazz pianist Makoto Ozone. He also curated and conducted performances in the trailblazing series SoundBox in SFS’s new nightclub-style performance space. Recent guest appearances included the New World and Chicago Symphonies, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He also debuted with the Brussels Philharmonic, the Grant Park Festival, and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and appeared at the Kennedy Center in their new music series led by composer Mason Bates. Outwater has conducted the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as symphony orchestras including Baltimore, Detroit, Houston, and Seattle. In Canada, he has led the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the symphonies of Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Victoria. International appearances include the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony, Kyoto Symphony, BBCNOW, the New Zealand Symphony, among many others. A native of Santa Monica, California, Mr. Outwater graduated cum laude in English literature from Harvard University. He received his Master’s in conducting from UC Santa Barbara, studying with Heiichiro Ohyama and Paul Polivnick, in addition to studying music theory and composition with John Stewart, Joel Feigin, and Leonard Stein.

E roica T rio The most sought-after trio in the world, the GRAMMY^ nominated Eroica Trio electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances, flawless technical virtuosity, irresistible enthusiasm and sensual elegance. The New York Times writes, “There is an edge of the seat intensity to every note they produce.” The Trio won the prestigious Naumburg Award, resulting in a highly successful Lincoln Center debut and has since toured the United States, Europe, Middle East, South America, and Asia. The Eroica Trio released eight critically lauded recordings for Angel/EMI classics Records, garnering them multiple GRAMMY^ nominations. The first all-female chamber ensemble to reach the top echelon of the field, the women of the Eroica Trio have shattered the age-old gender barrier, leading the vanguard and inspiring many to follow. Recent highlights include their mini-series, Eroica Trio and Friends, in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum with principal Clarinetist of the Atlanta Symphony, Laura Ardan and Violist of the Emerson Quartet, Lawrence Dutton. Another exciting project for the trio, Tango Ahora, featuring two new Concerti for the Trio and Bandoneon by Argentinean composers Emilio Kauderer and Daniel Binelli, was recorded in Prague; they premiered the Kauderer Concerto before a sold out audience in Buenos Aires with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional at the CCK. The Eroica Trio has appeared on numerous television programs, including ABC’s The View, CNN’s Showbiz Today, CBS and ABC News, CBS This Morning and Saturday Morning, The Isaac Mizrahi Show, Pure Oxygen, and Bloomberg TV. The group has been featured in such magazines as Elle, Glamour, Vanity Fair, Detour, Marie Claire, Gotham, Entrée, Bon Appétit, Time Out New York, Gramophone, Piano, Vivace, Auditorium, and Chamber Music. Whether the Eroica Trio is interpreting the Baroque Masters, the power and strength of Beethoven, the jazzy tunes of Schoenfield or the Bluegrass toe tapping rhythms of Mark O’Connor, their performances are deeply personal and continue to thrill audiences around the world. To quote the San Francisco Examiner, “It has been decades since this country has produced a chamber music organization with this much passion...” 2017 | 2018 Season

PLANNED GIVING Your support of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra is of tremendous value to us. There are many ways to give that can also return benefits to you. Whether it’s a bequest in your will or trust, a charitable gift annuity, or naming the KSO as a beneficiary of your retirement fund, planned gifts support the KSO’s long-term fiscal stability. All planned giving donors become members of The Leta Snow Legacy Society, named in honor of the founder of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. PL A N N ED G IVIN G O PT IO N S • Naming the KSO in your will or trust to receive a percentage of your estate. After making provisions for your family and friends, this is the most common form of planned giving. Our legal name is Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, a Michigan not-for-profit organization, and our federal tax identification number is 38-6005710. • Naming the KSO as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or IRA account. This arrangement can help your heirs avoid taxes which are due when any retirement asset is redeemed. • Establish a charitable gift annuity with the KSO that pays you a quarterly dividend. You will receive regular income at attractive investment rates and will likely be entitled to tax savings. The multitude of giving options is extremely varied and quite personal. The KSO staff is available to provide you with suggestions for gifts that fit your philanthropic goals. Please contact our Vice President of Development & Communications, Suzanne Day Weeldreyer, to begin a conversation about your plan and how you can support the KSO in a way that honors your love for the symphony. 269.349.7759 or sweeldreyer@kalamazoosymphony.com For more detailed information visit Planned Giving on the KSO website.

She served as its president and manager for over 28 years, doing everything from selling advertisements and tickets, running patron fundraisers, and even occasionally playing piano, string instruments, or flute in the orchestra. In 1942, Leta Snow organized a meeting in Chicago of 40 orchestra leaders to exchange ideas and support American orchestras which resulted in the establishment of the League of American Orchestras. She served as the organization’s president for its first four years.
