PROGRAMS OF STUDY INTRODUCTION
GRADUATION INFORMATION
Thank you for your interest in Kalamazoo Valley Community College and in the programs that we offer. The booklet you are holding, entitled Programs of Study, is an official and comprehensive overview of the programs offered at Kalamazoo Valley, including those designed to put you directly into the workforce and those designed to prepare you for further education at a four-year college or university.
An organized program of study at Kalamazoo Valley Community College normally leads to a degree or a certificate that signifies completion of a prescribed program with certain educational and/or occupational goals.
As you review this booklet you will notice that Kalamazoo Valley programs are categorized under six convenient Career Pathways. They are:
The Associate of Arts (AA) Degree
Arts and Communication Business, Management, Marketing & Technology Engineering/Manufacturing & Industrial Technology Health Sciences Human Services Natural Resources & Agriscience (Offered at Kalamazoo Valley as transfer programs.) A Career Pathway is one of six major categories under which all occupations can be grouped. The occupations within a Career Pathway share similar characteristics, and the people working within these occupations share common interests, strengths, and competencies.
Definition of Degrees
Within the six Career Pathways, you will find program listings. The listings are further subdivided by the type of degree or certificate awarded in each area. Kalamazoo Valley awards the following: The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree a degree requiring completion of 62 credit hours or more that prepares the graduate for immediate employment. The Associate of Arts or of Science (AA or AS) Degree a degree requiring completion of 62 credit hours or more that prepares the graduate to transfer to a baccalaureate-degree granting college or university. Only a sampling of these degrees is listed in this booklet. Other degrees exist and transfer to these and other colleges and universities. It is strongly recommended that you see a counselor if you are interested in transferring after you leave Kalamazoo Valley. Certificate a one-year certificate requiring completion of 30 credit hours or more that prepares you for a specialized occupation. Certificate of Achievement a certificate requiring fewer courses than a regular certificate program and providing training in a specific set of job or employment skills. Post Associate Certificate a certificate requiring fewer courses than a regular certificate program and providing opportunity for students who already hold a degree to continue their studies in specific, career-related areas.
Associate Degree Programs
require successful completion of a minimum of 62 credit hours. is normally granted to students who complete the curricula in education or liberal arts. This degree allows students to follow a general program of interdisciplinary study in the liberal arts or in a combination of liberal arts and career courses. If you are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university, this degree will generally meet all requirements for admission to the junior class. It is best to consult a counselor.
The Associate of Science (AS) Degree
is normally granted to students who complete the curricula in preengineering or pre-science. As in the case of the Associate in Arts Degree, these students will generally be admitted as juniors to the baccalaureate degree-granting institutions, but close examination of the appropriate curricula is most important. It is best to consult a counselor.
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree
is granted for various curricula that are occupational in orientation and are designed to prepare graduates for immediate employment. In many cases, these curricula can also apply toward an advanced degree, but this is dependent on the baccalaureate degree-granting institutions and is not the prime consideration in the design of curricula. The curricula for this degree have been developed with the help of various advisory committees that are knowledgeable in the specific career field. Requirements are frequently updated as knowledge and skills in these careers change.
The Certification Program (Certificate)
is normally reserved for the development of an employment skill. In addition to the certificate programs identified in this booklet, others may be developed to meet academic needs or particular employment goals. Requirements are frequently updated as knowledge and skills in these careers change.
The Post Associate Certificate (PAC) Program
offers competencies and skills beyond the associate degree. The Post Associate Certificate offers an opportunity to upgrade skills, become up-to-date with industry standards and become highly specialized in a particular area. In addition to the certificate programs identified in this booklet, others may be developed to meet academic needs or particular employment goals. Awarding a Post Associate Certificate requires that students have earned an associate or higher degree. Post-Associate programs require a minimum of 15 hours of credit.

Dental Hygiene
Emergency Medical Technology
The Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the status of full approval without reporting requirements. The program prepares you to write licensure exams and to provide dental health career services for the public. The need for specialized intra-oral and prevention oriented educational services is increasing. Dental hygienists are in great demand to provide dental health care in private dental offices, civil service positions, school programs, and various public health fields.
There are three levels of training provided under the Emergency Medical Services program: Medical First Responder (MFR), EMT Basic (EMT) and Paramedic. Although the levels are progressive, students may enter the program at either the MFR or EMT levels. Each level of training prepares students for challenging the respective National Registry of EMT’s (NREMT) certification exam. NREMT certification allows the student to then pursue licensure through the Michigan Department of Community Health. Each level is responsible for responding to, recognizing, and performing critical medical interventions for both the traumatically injured and the acutely ill patient in the out-of-hospital setting.

MFR training focuses on simple depth and breadth of lifethreatening conditions. It is designed to give students life saving skills such as airway management and bleeding control-skills that can save lives until more highly trained medical personnel arrive on the scene. MFR is not a certificate level course; however, successful course completion enables the student to sit for the NREMT exam at that level. EMT Basic is a certificate of achievement training and, therefore, is more comprehensive and increases the skill level to assisting patients with medication and some mildly invasive airway procedures. EMT is the minimal level of licensure required to participate in the ambulance transport of the patient to the hospital. The Paramedic is the most advanced level and includes invasive procedures designed to access airway and vasculature. Electrical therapy and pharmacology are an essential part of the Paramedic’s scope of practice as is the mastery of sophisticated life support equipment, such as a ventilator. The Paramedic curriculum encompasses a complex understanding of specific life-threatening conditions and a comprehensive depth of the critical care required by these patients. Paramedic level training offers both Certificate and AAS opportunities. Clinical experience is part of the EMT-B and Paramedic programs.

TRANSFER PROGRAMS
More than half of the students who enroll in a degree program at Kalamazoo Valley Community College each year, identify themselves as planning to transfer. Students from Kalamazoo Valley transfer to Michigan colleges and universities and to schools out-of-state. Students transfer into a variety of programs, some of which are shown below.

TRANSFER PROGRAM INFORMATION Curriculum Guides
Transfer programs of study at Kalamazoo Valley are designed cooperatively between Kalamazoo Valley and four-year colleges and universities. It is the four-year colleges and universities that determine the transferability of Kalamazoo Valley courses to their institutions. This information is gathered, maintained and continuously updated in the Kalamazoo Valley Counseling Office and is incorporated into appropriate transfer curriculum guides. Curriculum guides provide students with an outline of the freshman and sophomore courses that are needed to fulfill the requirements for general education, majors, and university graduation. By closely following a transfer curriculum guide, it is possible to graduate from Kalamazoo Valley with an associate of arts or an associate of science degree prior to transfer. The transfer curriculum guides are available on the Kalamazoo Valley web site at www.kvcc.edu.
TRANSFER PROGRAMS
Transferability of Kalamazoo Valley Courses Students must be aware that there is a limit to the number of credits transferable from a two-year college to be used toward a baccalaureate degree. Generally, 62 transferable credits or one-half of the total number of credits required for the baccalaureate degree will be allowed. Applicability of courses to the transfer program is also a factor in the transferability of credits. The grades earned in courses taken also factor into their transferability. Generally, a minimum grade of 2.0 is required in each individual course in order to transfer the course. Also, admission to specific university programs may require an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or higher. A student should consult with a Kalamazoo Valley counselor in order to verify course requirements for transfer. If planning to transfer to an out-of-state school, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the four-year school for transfer requirements.

Transfer Degree Requirements Available at Kalamazoo Valley Virtually all bachelor-degree programs require certain general-education courses as well as specific major or premajor courses. These general-education courses, available at Kalamazoo Valley, are grouped into the following areas: English/communications, science/mathematics, social science, humanities, and wellness/physical education. The type of degree program in which the student is enrolled determines the number of required courses in each general education area. (See requirements on page 2.) On the next several pages, you will find samples of programs that include general education courses that transfer to various colleges and universities within Michigan. If you are interested in transferring, but do not see a program that fits your interest area, be sure to see a Kalamazoo Valley counselor, who can provide you with a transfer program of study. And if you know you want to transfer but are undecided about a specific field of study, work with a counselor who will help you choose general-education courses that will meet degree requirements. Colleges and universities periodically change requirements to their programs. They reserve the right to make changes in transfer requirements without prior notification. However, the Kalamazoo Valley counselors are kept informed of these changes and can help you develop a program that is current for transfer. To be assured that courses will meet the requirements of the transfer institution, be sure to meet with a Kalamazoo Valley counselor. It is the responsibility of each student to verify transfer requirements with a Kalamazoo Valley counselor. It is best to see a counselor regarding your program of study. Make an appointment by stopping at the Student Service Center on the Texas Township Campus [TTC] or at Anna Whitten Hall on the Arcadia Commons Campus [ACC], or by calling (269)488-4100 for TTC or (269)373-7834 for ACC.
Sometimes you have big ideas... We’re here to help you realize them. This may only be the beginning of your educational journey—but you will never forget it.

We also offer a deferred payment plan. Tuition is charged per credit hour. Some courses will have lab fees associated with them while others such as art courses may require you to purchase supplies. Many classes will also require you to purchase textbooks.
Is financial assistance available? There are numerous options for those who qualify, including scholarships, grants, loans, veteran benefits and work opportunities. It is important that students applying for student aid complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov as soon as possible for the appropriate award year. We encourage you to apply and to meet with our experienced advisors in financial aid. They can answer your questions, help you complete your paperwork, and inform you of a broad array of options.
Will my classes transfer to another institution? Kalamazoo Valley credits are accepted by accredited colleges and universities. In most cases you must have earned a 2.0 grade in a college-level course that is applicable to your degree program. It is best to meet with one of our academic counselors to choose the right courses and to get specific information about transfer requirements. Our counselors maintain communication with Michigan colleges to ensure they are basing their recommendations on the most up-to-date information.
Can I receive credit for life or work experience? Kalamazoo Valley recognizes that all learning is valuable. Learning can occur anytime and anyplace. You may be eligible to earn college credit for what you already know. Let the Prior Learning Assessment Office help you decide if you are a candidate. Please call 269.488.4744 for more information.
Do I have time to take classes? Being a college student doesn’t have to be a five-day-a-week commitment. We have classes that meet days, evenings and on the weekends. Many courses meet just one evening a week! You can even take classes from the comfort of your home with telecourse and Internet courses.
Can I tour your campuses? We would be thrilled to show off our campuses while answering your questions, so don’t hesitate to schedule a tour. Be sure to let us know if you have a special interest so we can include it as part of your tour. Call our Student Admission Specialist at 269.488.4755 or email campustours@kvcc.edu for your appointment.
What do I do if I have special needs? Our Special Services Office is designed to meet the individual needs of students with physical, psychiatric or learning disabilities. For more information, call 269.488.4397 (voice), 269.488.4358 (TTD) or visit their website at: www.kvcc.edu/specialservices
