01 Prospect Headquarters Project selected for Berkeley Circus Comprehensive Studio Instructor: Chris Calott Individual Work Fall 2014 This is a proposal for a mixed use office building in downtown New Orleans with an auditorium, gallery, and cafe on the ground floor, Prospect New Orleans headquarters on the second, and a business incubator on the third. Thereby providing a gradient from public to private from the ground floor up. The main tenant, Prospect, is an arts organization that stages one of the largest Art Biennials in North America. Before I started designing I looked at vernacular New Orleans architecture to see how public and private domains have been combined and architecture has responded to the harsh climate. The creole townhouse corner store peaked my interest. It is iconic. It has a public front piece with service bars at the back, a carriageway that leads to a small courtyard for light air and activity, and galleries wrapped in delicate wrought iron and organic filigree that provide a liminal space between the building and the city as well as shade from high and low sun. With some respect and some irreverence I placed one on the site. I mirrored it to address both corners and thickened the carriageway and courtyard to create a main portal and sculpture garden. Then I began to adjust and contort to suit the site and program.

Site Plan The site is the warehouse district. The Mississippi River is a few blocks to the east and the downtown and French quarter are a 5 minute drive to the north.
Orchestrated Views A varied rhythm of aluminum screen frames views of the surrounding site while providing shade from the harsh New Orleans Sun.
3
Form Derivation The spirit of New Orleans vernacular architecture is ingrained in the building but not aped by it.

LA Iconism Advanced Option Studio 202 Instructors: Elena Manferdini and Ryan Tyler Martinez Collaborators: Qi Li and Phillip Panzerella Spring 2014
This studio was an exploration in designing forms and patterns towards developing new icons for LA. The building that I was responsible for was formed through assembling primitive shapes that amass to create an amalgamated pyramid. In tandem, I created a pixelated graphic distillation of LA that wraps the form so that the building reflects an ersatz version of LA.

Form
Pattern
The iconic and primitive sphere and box were amassed and sliced to create a pyramid like form that anchors the site.
The pattern is a graphic distillation of palm trees, LA’s brilliant polluted sunsets and LAX into pixels. The pattern represents the fast-culture that LA exports through screens.

Iron Works District Hostel Architecture Design Studio 200B Instructors: Danelle Guthrie and Rudabeh Pakravan Individual Work Fall 2012 This project is a hostel to accommodate 150-200 people in Oakland’s Ironworks district integrating a multi-purpose open space suitable for a wide range of communal activities. The building sits on a plinth that creates a natural amphitheater. The bedrooms function as theater boxes from which guests can see and be seen.

Site Activation
A series of operations were applied to a cube in order to derive a form that activated the corner of the site.
The simple ingredients of seats around a stage lends itself to numerous activities that enrich the site. 24

Velodrome / Amphitheater Architecture Design Studio 200A Instructors: Mark Anderson and Kyle Steinfeld Individual Work Fall 2012 The objective was to create a velodrome for the University of California, Berkeley that could double as an amphitheater. The site lies in a canyon atop the Berkeley hills and looks west towards the bay. The roof bends upwards to create an aperture for sun and sky. This bend also allows for a sloping seating bank for the amphitheater. The roof, floor and walls are thickened and carved into to allow for circulation and service spaces.

Longcheng Square Woods Bagot Summer 2014 Shenzhen’s Longcheng Square will establish a burgeoning economic and financial hub for Longgang whilst forming a global presence. Iconic office towers coupled with dynamic retail podiums and a vibrant residential community form an epicenter for Longgang’s future economic and cultural growth. My role on this competition was to assist in the design of the landscaping and feature floors of the buildings as well as diagram the building systems and design process.
