Glaring Tiger This gray scale tiger stares intensly at his viewers. For this project I made five different pictures; a teapot, a bottle I drank out of, my cell phone, a tiger, and drawing from a photo. Each piece I made by using the crosshatching technique and changing the shades of gray on Adobe Illustrator. For this piece chose to draw a tiger. I believed this crosshatching and shading technique would look good on it. This technique had greatly benifited this picture becuase “This piece took it adds depth to it. You can notice me over 6 hours each individual dash as a strand of fur. Because I had to make this piece using to make. dashes, it took me over 6 hours to complete. Although it was time consuming, I still enjoyed making this piece. I think the tiger calm demeanor is a very interesting mood for a tiger since most tigers are portrayed as fierce and scary. The values of gray that I used make this tiger even more interesting. The bold blacks in the tiger picture catches your eye first because that is the darkest part and there are not that many black stripes. The tiger’s eyes are also black which makes it difficult for one to tear away from its gaze. Its eyes look placid and relaxed. I realy enjoyed created this piece and am satisfied with its results.

Walking through the City “ Many people are more focused on their phones than what is around them.”
This is another one of the gray scale pieces that I did in Adobe Illustratior. I used the pen tool and made many dashes to create my phone. Then I drew my hand using long thick brush strokes. I call this piece “Walking Through the City”. It is interesting in which it’s name contradicts what is really being shown. I placed myself in the city and walking through it, but the only thing I see is my phone. I am missing out on the world around me and am only focused on what is in front of me. Many people are more focused on their phones than what is around them. The phone itself, is the center of the piece in which it has the 6 - Digital Arts
most detail and is in the center. Then the hand has less detail showing that it’s less important. The background has the least detail. Although the background has the least detail, it is still noticeable in which you really can’t see the city that you are walking through.
Happy Pumpkin “Although I made this piece at the last minute, it turned out to be more interesting than I had imagined.” Along with the other pieces, I made a grey value pumpkin. I call this piece “Happy Pumpkin”. I chose to make this because I wanted to create something ordinary yet out of place at the same time. What makes this pumpkin unique, is first its smile. Pumpkins are normally seen during Halloween time, which is in the fall, and are represented as scary. Yet this pumpkin is happy and seems to be placed in the snow. The placement of the pumpkin and its smiling gives it a unique twist on a traditional Halloween spirit. Similar to “Walking through the City”, I had used the Adobe Illustrator software to create this. I had used the brush tool and
grey scale paint to add the color. I started this piece similar to the other pieces by drawing 100 lines to make its form. Afterward, I used the brush tool to make little dashes to fill the pumpkin in with color. I used the grey value scale to show volume on the pumpkin. I am really surprised at how well this piece turned out. I created it at the last minute before it was due, so I really wasn’t expecting much from it. What makes this pumpkin look amazing it that it looks metallic. It also has some lines sticking out of it, which makes it look like a prickly pumpkin. Considering how little effort I had put into this, I think it is amazing and looks better than I had expected. Digital Arts - 7

Fuzy Vase
This fuzy vase has a unique attribute in which it is functional and interesting.
This piece is a still life of a vase that I saw. I used Illustrator software to draw it. I also used the baboo pad and pen, and combined multiple dashes to form it. Creating the vase was a little difficult because I had to make the form without outlininng it. I first drew it using 100 lines then, using that as my base, I added the color. The color I used for this piece was yellow. Surprisingly, this piece contains all values and variations of yellow. I didn’t know that brown was a form of yellow until I started this piece. I chose to color this vase yellow because I thought it would be different. My professor wanted us to practise showing different values of one color. He said to try not to do yellow because it is a difficult color to obtain all of the variations and the yellow probably wouldn’t be seen. So I decided to challenge his statement. I think the vase turned out perfect. He was also impressed on how I was able to show the different values of yellow. This color also suits the vase. This piece is called “Fuzy Vase”. I chose the name based off of what other people saw. The vase looks fuzy which is unique because there are rarely any fuzy vases. It combines visual appeal to function. Yes, the vase is fuzy but to becomes less fuzy towards the top. This shows that it can be functional and hold water yet still remain appealing to the eye.

Calm Bird Cool Colors equals a calm mind.
For this piece, I had also used Adobe Illustrator and combined multiple dashes to create one whole picture. With “Calm Bird”, I used cool colors such as different shades of blue and violet. These colors are called analogous colors. They are called this because they are next to each other on the color wheel. They also create a calming and relaxing effect, hence the term “cool colors”. The idea of drawing a bird using analogous colors came to me when I was search the web on Google images. At first, I wanted to use the colors red, yellow, and orange. My idea was to draw a Phoenix, a mythical bird made up of fire, but it tuned out to be more difficult than I had thought and would have taken more time to create than I had. Then the idea came to me that instead of drawing a phoenix, why don’t I do the opposite. I decide to draw a bird of water instead of fire. In “Calm Bird”, the color of the bird gradually moves from a dark navy blue to a light sky blue. This effect shows the bird shimmering as the light source moves around it. The background helps directs one attention more on the bird because it maintain close to neutral as possible. It is starts off as a light purple and gradually darkens. This effect brings out the contrast between light and dark, and the bird and its background.

Base Fruit This “cool and groovy” piece makes great use of complimentary colors, yellow and violet. “Base Fruit” is similar to “Calm Bird” in which I used the same software, Adobe Illustrator, and technique, crosshatching. The difference between the two is that I used the complimentary colors instead of analogous colors. Complimentary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. The complimentary colors that I chose were yellow and violet. These two colors are portrayed well together in “Base Fruit”. I chose the colors yellow and violet to use in this picture because I thought they would look well together and those are two colors rarely used together in a picture. The idea of the grapes with a sun just popped into my head while I was thinking of the two colors. The color yellow reminded me of the sun and the first thing I thought of when I hear violet was grapes, so I decided to combine the two. These two colors, against a black background, makes the overall picture stand out. The use “Altogether, this of transparency in the yellow in the piece took me over 2 Sun gives it the radiating feeling of hours to complete”. and actual sun. The colors blend in nicely as the yellow in the sun fades as if it is fading into the violet of the grapes. Altogether, this piece took me over two hours to complete. I spent two hours exactly to finish drawing it but it still needed editing so I had to spend more time on it. I really like this piece because of how the grapes and sun stand out on the black background.

Video Still Life These next few pieces show different shots of my first speed video of me drawing a still life. These next few works are different frames of a still life that I had drawn. The picture is from a still life model of four bottles on top of a box on top of a platform. I was introduced to the ipad and learned how to use the painting program and had to video tape my work. Each of the following pictures are a snapshot of a frame from the video. It was a little uncomfortable knowing that someone will be watching you draw, but it was fun watching the video on how I made it. I really enjoyed working with the Ipads and learning how to draw with them. It was a little difficult trying to draw with your finger on the screen and zooming into a certain spot to get the details. The first thing one should notice is the box because it is a different shape and looks like a plane. The second thing one should notice is the bottles because they are different colors.

For each slide I took I had done something different. The first picture shows how I had started. I began by drawing lines to make up the platform, box, and first bottle. After a few minutes of drawing, the professor would add a new bottle to the still life. We could also make the bottles any color we wanted. I chose to start off with green because the first bottle had a greenish tint.
Frame 02:31 shows me beginning to add more detail to the green bottle. I begin to outline it and I also increased the brush size to add values. (frame 02:49) As I add more values of color to the bottle, it begins to take form and look more realistic and transparent, similar to a bottle. I had also begun to do the same thing to the box in adding lighter values on the right side to show the sourse of light and making it gradually darker. I used the same technique with the next two bottles in frame 02:58 and 03:33. I In the second picture, my professor began to a tint of a pale blue-green to the bottle to “ The whole drawing added add another bottle so I stopped drawing the first show the transparentsy of the bottle and to show took at least 2 hours to that the straw is covering it. The darker shades and drew the second one. This was a bit difficult because the second bottle was behind the make. Luckily it was of straw represents the other farther side of the first, so I had to estimate where it would be in bottle. Frame 03:33, uses the same techique. I sped up to 4:13 terms of space. I made the second bottle a light made the shades go from light to dark and added greenish blue, because it was clear and I thought a darker shade on the bottom to represent the the color would be a good transition between bottom of the bottle. the green bottle in front of it. The last bottle in frame 03:42, just shows the detail I added to In the 00:28 frame, again, the professor added another bottle that bottle. I chose to make each bottle a similar color to their so I began drawing a rough sketch of it. I made this one brown actual color because since I am using a dark background using a to represent the straw around it. This bottle was also difficult brighter version for each bottle would make them stand out more. because of its size. I had to make the bottle look bigger than the The platform stands out the least. I drew the platform using mulgreen bottle, not only because it is bigger but also because it is tiple smaller lines to give it a more wood like feel. The platform in front of the green bottle. Frame 01:31 shows the last bottle to is also the darkest because it is wood and is less important than be included in this piece. I also began to sketch it the figure but the bottles. I also began to add more detail to the box and platform. I had to draw the box in a way that would make it seem 3D, and was All in all, this piece took at least two hours to do but the speed underneath the bottles yer on top of the platform. The platform video was able to shorten it to 4 minutes and 13 seconds. I am was the easiest because it just required lighter and darker shades really glad that it was shortened automatically because it would to show the direction of the light sourse. be a pain to watch the entire process. This was a new and fun experience using the Ipads and learning about different tools that one can use.

Logos The next few pieces are of logos for a program called Community Based Learning. For these next few pieces, I was given a assignment to make a logo for a company called Community Based Learning. This project required me to combine simplicity, uniqueness, and functionality. It was a bit of a difficult task because most of the work that make is complex. I was excited though because this would be the first time that I made a logo. At first, I didn’t know what to do for a logo because it had to show community and learning, yet be simple enough to see for a profile picture. I started off making a few logos but they didn’t look good to me. I then started making logos using circles and they looked good. This shield logo on the right was the last logo that I made. After multiple circle logos, I decided to try something different. This shield logo turned out better than I had expected. I started off by making a circle by using the elispe tool. I then used the pen tool to create a shield inside of it. The patterns on the shield came from the Saint Xavier University symbol. I used their symbol because it is housing the Community Based Learning program. I used the pen tool and paint tool to create all of the patterns on the shield. Then, I added the letters “CBL”, to stand for Community Based Learning, in the middle of the shield. Finally, to make the piece come together I added a gradient to the circle in the background. I like the gradient because it makes the logo look like a button. The shield almost looks like it is bulging out of the logo. I think this logo has achieved all of the aspects of simplicity, uniqueness, functionality, and legibility

This cool 3D sphere gives a whole new look on digital logos. These are two ideas for the CBL logo that I had. The idea came while I was looking at random YouTube videos. I saw a video that showed how to shape text into a sphere and look 3D. I thought it was cool so I did one. I really like the 3D look and it is unique. I might use this technique more often in the future. I created this logo using multiple different steps. I first used the ellipse tool to create a circle. I then typed the text and turned it into a shape. I had cut the circle in half and then used the 3-D effect to turn it into a sphere. Afterwards, I added the text so that it wraps around the sphere. Finally, I added color to the letters. Creating this logo was very interesting and I had fun learning how to create 3D logos.
This is another version of 3D sphere, yet it’s solid not transparent. This is the simplified version of the first logo. I also used the Illustrator software to create it. The only difference is that I deleted the background of the sphere. Though this logo was a bit more difficult. Whenever I tried to change the color of the text, it would change the color of the entire sphere so it looked like a red ball. Eventually, I just decided to color each individual letter. It took longer but I, at least, had achieved what I wanted.

“This logo was the first one that I had created. This logo was the first one that I had created. It was just a rough draft to see how it turned out, but it turned out good. When I made this, I was basically wondering how to show community in a logo. Many of the logos, which I saw on the internet, that I wanted to do looked like they suited an industrial company or technology. I started this project by creating a circle and then using the line tool to make the stick figures. I then made a smaller circle to fit inside the larger circle. After that, I fit the stick figure in the space between the smaller and larger circle. I copied and paste more stick figures and rearranged them around the smaller circle. Then I added color to the circle and created 3D letters to move in the middle of it. Although this was my first logo, I think I did well on it.
This is the second logo I had created. I edited the lettering to fit with the logo This logo is an enhancement from the first one. I basically did used the same steps as in the first logo, except that I changed the color and edited the letters. I changed the loge because I wanted to see how it would look with different type of text. I darkened the red center and lightened letters in order to give more contrast to the two and to make the letters more legible. The red center helps bring out the grey letters in the logo, which helps makes this logo legible.

Montage The combination of the flaming wheel around Mars help to portray the god of war-Mars. This piece was my first project in Digital Imagery. I was very excited because this was the first class that I took that taught me how to use Photoshop. Our assignment was to create a montage by combining different pictures already in the computer. The first two montages didn’t look good to me, but the third one turned out perfect. I created this montage using Photoshop. I started off by using the fire picture as the background. I then added a pictures of mars because I thought it would have a nice contrast to the bright orange- yellow fire and the red planet. Next, I added in the eyes from a cat in a different picture. The eyes helped give this picture a sinister look. The last thing I added to this montage was different types of flowers. I took three different types of flowers from two different pictures and copied them into this montage. I changed the opacity and then used the burn tool to make them blend into the fire wheel. I was surprised when I made this piece because I didn’t know how it would turn out. In the end, it turned out better than I had expected. I liked the placement of mars in the middle of the fire ring. It gives the planet a more dramatic feel and the placement of the eyes helps add a more dramatic feel. The mood can be similar to a sinister evil villain or an opposing threat. Anyway, I like it and I’m happy about how well it turned out.

Self Portraits
The self -portrait assignment was my second favourite among all of the projects we were given for Digital Imagery class. I did both portraits in Photoshop. The assignment for the first self -portrait was to practice using paintbrushes and filters to alter our picture. In the second self-portrait I had to only use filters to alter our picture. Like I said, I used the software Photoshop to create both of these self-portraits. For the first portrait, I first changed my skin. I used the opacity and brightness level, in order to give the pale vampire skin. The next thing I did was use the smudge tool on my teeth to create fangs. This was fairly simple because my teeth were already sharp. Then, I colored my hair red using the paintbrush tool. I also used the paintbrush to color my eyes and shirt. The final touches came with the paintbrush of blood and setting myself in the background I chose to turn myself into a vampire. The reasoning behind this idea came from my teeth. As I stated before, my carnivorous teeth are sharp so once I noticed that feature, in my picture, I decided to turn myself into a vampire. When I finished creating this piece, my professor had asked me, “Why is it a happy vampire?” I told him that I thought it was a funny twist on how most vampires are portrayed. Why not a happy vampire? It’s something that no one else has thought of before. If you still don’t believe in my reasoning , then lets just say this vampire is high from drink too much blood and call it a day.

Cool Effects on My Face I also created this self-portrait using Photoshop. On this portrait, I just had to use multiple different filters. The first thing I did was change the hair color. I really didn’t know what to do with the hair so I just colored it pink. Next, I used the filter tool to give my face an oil painting look. It looks really cool and I like the texture it gives to my face. I used this same technique on my clothes, except I made the oil texture thicker and I decided to play with the distortion tool. The last few things I did was color my eyes and use the smudge tool to distort my glasses. The reasoning behind most of these changes to myself would be because I felt like it. All of the filters I used I was just playing around an experimenting on how each one will look. Sometime your most random work turns out to be the best work you have ever made. Though, I will admit the pink hair does throw everything off.

A funny take on the painting, Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is the original painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe by Juan Diego. I took this picture whiled I was at the Mexican Museum of Art. For this project, I had to place my face into a picture and edit it so that my face fits the picture. I chose this painting: first because it was one of the few painting that I took a picture of with a person in it, and secondly because I thought it would be funny and 30 - Digital Arts
interesting to make myself the holy mother Mary. It took a while for me to finish this picture. The hardest part was my face. I had to change its lightness and darkness with the curve tool. Then I used the color balance tool to give it a more yellowish, brownish color to match the painting. Finally, I use the Hue/Saturation tool because for some reason it looked more reddish than yellow so I had to change that. All in all, this was an easy project it was just tedious to have to use 3 or 4 tools just to match my face to the painting.
I hope this picture doesn’t offend anyone. It was never my intent to be disrespectful to anyone. Like I stated before, I just did this for a good laugh and I thought it would be interesting to face on the painting. Besides, if no one else thinks this is funny, at least my professors will always get a good laugh out of it.

These next two pictures are the highlight of my proud work. I feel proud of them because these are two out of five works that I had done for my Digital Imagery final. For my Digital Imagery final, I had to choose one or more lesson(s) that I had learned during the semester and create six images using that/ those lesson(s). Although they both look like they were painted over in Coral Painter, they were both complete in Photoshop. The idea for my project was to turn my family members into animals. This idea came to me while I was looking around on YouTube. (My best ideas come from here) I thought, “What would it be like if I turned my family members into animals? So I asked each one of my family members what animal they would like to be. As each one told me I began visualizing how each one would look. I then started my project from there.

The first picture (left) is a picture of my youngest sister, Desembur. I started off by creating a layer with just her picture, then making another layer with a picture of a monkey. I overlapped the picture of the monkey on her face and changed the opacity, so that I know what to change on her face. It was difficult starting off, since I didn’t have much experience with Photoshop. The first thing that I changed was her eyes. I used the fisheye tool to enlarge her eyes and then used the spot correction tool to fix any unsightly openings or misplaced skin. Afterwards, I used the clone tool to clone her under eyelid and copied it multiple times in order to create the multiple wrinkles a monkey has. I used the smudge tool to pull her nose down and added some more wrinkles under her nose and on her lips. The finishing touches came by adding hair to her face, adding a tail, and giving her a background.
My Mom wanted to be the dog, Samoyed. The second picture (right) is a picture of my mom. Just like my sister, I started off by overlaying a picture of a dog in order to get feel for where everything should go. I created this piece a little differently. Instead of altering her face, I drew over it. I used multiple different brush types in order to create the fluffiness of the fur. For the snout, I used a regular brush tool, eyedropper tool to get the color, and the blend tool to make the colors blend in smoothly. Similar to the picture next to it, I also used the fisheye effect on her eyes to make them bigger, like a dog. The finishing touched on this picture was simpler, in which I just created and decorated a background. The snow falling in the background really compliments this photograph.
Surprisingly, this picture took longer to create than my sister. I guess coloring it is what took up most of my time. Because I’m usually anal about details, it took a while for me to perfectly happy with this piece. Overall, I like both pieces and I’m delighted at how well they both turned out.

Dragon Coral Painter 12 Fall 2013
I created this piece using the software Coral Painter 12. I was really excited when I found out I was going to learn how to use this software. I had always seen speed drawings on YouTube of people using this software, so when I received my assignment to draw something I chose a dragon. I always wanted to create my own dragon using the computer. Now I could. I started this project by creating my first layer and outlining how the dragon would look. The tools I used to create this piece were the Conte brush, grainy acrylic, and grainy water-blending tool. The sketch I did using the Conte brush. Afterward, I created another layer to create the background. For the background I used the acrylic brush, painted the different areas with various colors, then used the blending tool to blend everything together. My third layer is where I added all of my color for the dragon. I really can’t explain how I painted this piece. It just came to me and the more I painted and blended the better it looked.

Altogether, this piece took over 10 hours. It probably took more than this. I started it in October and somehow I still find myself editing it in someway. I am currently still working on this piece still. I consider this piece to be my favourite piece out of this entire magazine. I have always loved mythical creatures and fantasy, but I was never sure that I could create something close to what I imagined. This dragon has given me proof that I can bring my fantasy to reality. I the future, I do plan to create more fantasy pictures especially dragons.

Agony Pt2 Charcoal, Pen, Pencil 9” x 12” October 2013
This piece was created for one the assignments my professor gave me. He told me that most of my artwork was light fantasy, so he wanted me to create something “edgy”. Since my main theme was wings, I decided to make something “edgy” using that. This piece is called “Agony Pt 2” because I made various other pieces similar to this, one as a sketch and one in color pencil, but this one stood out the most and portrayed the “edginess” and agony I was looking for. As the name entails, this person is in agony. One can tell by the look on the person’s face and the deformity of its body and wings. I spent more effort on the wings because I wanted to pull away from the perfect and pureness wings symbolize. With this piece, the wings are far from perfect. They are losing feathers, broken, and covered in blood. This really brings out the agony in the picture and the edginess theme I was aiming for.

Pastel,Color Pencil, modified in Coral Painter 10x8 Septembur 2013
What motived me for this piece was the frame that I was given. Instead of finding a frame that fits the picture, I had to make a picture that fits the frame. When I first received the frame, the first thing that popped into my mind was an Alice in Wonderland theme. I believe the small frame reminded me of multiple scenes where Alice was big and the setting she was in was small. One’s attention is first drawn to the Cheshire cat. Since this character always has an eerie feel, I decided that disassembling his head and having his body disintegrate into feathers, would capture that eerie feel. The scene in which this cat, is where there are multiple doors and one has to choose which one to open. One wonders whether this is a dream or is it reality in the form of doors?

Autumn Bird Color Pencil, Pastel, Pen 11” x 14” Febuary 2014
I first got the idea from a design on a Starbucks coffee cup. I then thought, “what would it look like if these leaves where actually feathers? So I used those leaves to create a bird. It was around the fall time frame when I thought of this idea, so I added color to the bird using autumn colors. I drew a thicket of leaves and branches bordering the bottom and left side of the picture. I gave this thicket natural colors to represent nature and to also focus one’s attention on the bird. As you look closely to this picture, you will notice that the bird’s feathers/ leaves are falling off. This represents the season changing as autumn turns to winter.
