인정했으면 좋겠다. 솔직히 나도 그 러지 못했다. 이전에는 사진을 찍으 면 포토샵으로 팔과 허벅지 사이즈 를 줄였다. 그게 예쁜 줄 알았다. 근 육이 크다는 이유로 약물을 한다, 보 충제를 먹으면서 웨이트 트레이닝 에 집중한다는 오해도 받았다. 이제 는 내 몸의 정직함을 알기에 그런 루 머에 신경 쓰지 않는다. <노는 언니 >에 출연하면서 시청자의 반응을 보면, 다행히 내 몸을 멋지다고 해 주신다. 내가 열심히 살아온 증거임 을 아시기 때문일 거다. 만들고 싶은 근육 고등학교 때 체지 방이 살짝 늘면서 오히려 수영할 때 부력이 향상되는 듯한 기분이었다. 그때부터 점차 성적도 좋아졌다. 그 래서 현재는 체지방을 줄일 생각은 없으나, 언젠가 한 번쯤 탄탄한 복 근을 만들어보고 싶다.

디자이너인 진태옥과 협업 컬렉션 을 기획한 거죠. 하지만 코로나19로 행사 참여를 취소했고, 대신 그 컬렉 션을 더 섬세하고 정교하게 발전시 켜 비로소 탄생하게 되었습니다.” 래 코드 신화의 주인공인 코오롱FnC부 문 한경애 전무의 설명이다. 이 프로 젝트에 주축이 된 또 다른 인물은 스 타일리스트 서영희다. 여러분도 잘 아시다시피 <보그>와 20년 넘게 ‘ 코리아니즘’을 비롯해 수많은 패션 비주얼과 전시를 기획하고 창작해 온 인물이자 진태옥과 런웨이, 전시, 아트북 등 여러 장르에서 오래 일해 온 비주얼 크리에이터다. 진태옥과 래코드의 협업을 위한 비주얼 작업 역시 그녀의 솜씨다. “스타일리스트 로 일하면서 늘 느끼는 게 있어요. 요즘이야말로 디자이너의 역량이 매우 중요한 시대라는 사실이죠. 그 런 의미에서 리사이클링 패션을 쉽 게 생각하고 싶지 않았어요. 옷에 새 생명을 불어넣을 만큼 디자이너가 고유의 에너지와 역량이 없다면, 새 로 만든 옷이라고 해도 죽은 옷이나 다름없으니까요. 그런 의미에서 진 태옥과 래코드 협업에 참여한 건 저 에게도 행운이었죠.” 한경애 전무 역 시 비슷한 생각이다. “이미 만든 옷

사실 패션 비즈니스에서 3년이 지난 옷은 마지막까지 누군가에게 선택 되지 못한 ‘재고 중의 재고’로 취급 받는다. 그 수많은 재고 중에 진태옥 은 ‘남성복 재킷’을 요구했다. “남자 를 대표하는 패션 아이템은 단연 재 킷입니다. 저는 여기에 벨벳을 더했 어요. 디자인을 시작하던 처음이나 지금이나 저의 테마는 늘 여성과 남 성을 오가며 상반된 요소의 매치였 습니다.” 진태옥은 블랙 재킷을 이리 저리 해체한 뒤 전혀 새로운 형태의 옷을 ‘창조’했다. <보그> 촬영장에 서 다시 만나 10여 벌의 옷을 입은 김주원은 이번 컬렉션에 대해 특별 한 평가를 더했다. “클래식이야말로 당대 모더니즘을 나타내는 지표라 고 봅니다. 그런 맥락에서 진태옥 선 생님의 옷이야말로 모든 시대의 클 래식이 될 수 있습니다. 여기에 예술 이라는 형태는 자연과 함께 흘러가 며 진화해야 하죠. 그래서 이번 촬영 이 개인적으로 의미가 큽니다.”

가 입은 옷 중에 진태옥 선생님의 옷 도 있었죠. 지금 마흔네 살의 발레리 나로서 두 분과 함께 <보그>와 다 시 만나게 되었군요.”

“진태옥의 옷은 늘 한계가 없다는 느낌을 줍니다. 오늘 입은 옷 역시 평소에도 세련되고 예쁘지만 무대 에서 입고 춤을 춰보고 싶다는 마음 이 들었죠.” ─김주원 “가까운 미래가 우리가 상상한 미 래가 아닐 수 있다는 생각이 듭니 다. 그렇기에 지금은 그 어떤 것보 다 환경을 먼저 고려하고 지구와 함께 살아가는 사회를 그려야 하 지 않을까요.” ─한경애 “스튜디오 한쪽에 걸린 재킷을 보 았을 때 웃음이 절로 나오더군요. 재킷을 베스트로 만들기 위해 가 위로 자를 때에는 소름이 돋을 정 도였습니다. 이 옷을 사람들이 입 을 때 어떤 새로움을 느낄지 떠올리 며 흥분했죠.” ─진태옥 지속 가능성은 몇 년 전만 해도 모 든 디자이너들이 ‘옷’과 ‘패션’을 위 해 고려해야 할 필수 불가결한 요소 는 아니었다. 그러나 지금은 필수 중 의 필수다. 유명 하우스는 물론 신생 독립 브랜드까지 모두가 지구와 환 경의 중요성을 설파한다. 진태옥 역 시 지속 가능성을 늘 숙고해왔다. “ 세상에 존재하는 많은 옷이 지구를 덮어도 수십 번은 덮고 남을 거라고 생각하곤 했어요.” 진태옥은 또 어떤 방식으로 새로운 비전을 제시할 수 있을까 고민했다고 덧붙인다. “케이 트 블란쳇이 지난 베니스 영화제에 서 4년 전 영국 아카데미 시상식에 서 입었던 알렉산더 맥퀸 드레스를 다시 입었어요. 지속 가능성을 또 다 른 형태로 보여준 좋은 예죠. 패션의 새로운 도전이었어요.”

진태옥은 1993년 파리 패션 위크 에 참여한 뒤 1989년 서울패션협회 를 설립해 동료 디자이너들과 함께 SFA와 SFAA 그리고 서울 패션 위크 로 이어지는 선진국형 패션 위크를 최초로 만든 인물이다. 한국 패션 대 가가 보여준 이번 협업을 통해 후배 디자이너들 역시 다시 한번 영감을 얻게 될 것이다. 그녀는 젊은 한국 디자이너들이 리사이클링 패션에 대해 보다 더 진지하게 고민하길 바 란다고 전했다. “이번 컬렉션으로 이 루고 싶은 꿈이 있습니다. K-팝 아 티스트들이 국제 무대에서 리사이 클링 패션을 입고 공연하는 거죠. 덕 분에 한국에도 이런 옷과 이런 옷을 디자인하는 인물이 많다는 것을 세 계인이 알게 되었으면 좋겠어요. 그 러면 K-리사이클링 패션이라고 불 러야 할까요?”
