H o t e l Objective: Develop a thorough understanding of design development processes in a hospitality project. Complete programming, research, schematic/concept design development, specifications for a boutique hotel. Sq. Ft. - 26,400 Duration - 6 Weeks Team Project

Concept:

Derived from the Wynwood Walls in Miami, FL’s Art District, the concept is driven from their unique street art and the appreciation of their local art which is part of what attracts tourists to culture-rich destinations such as Miami. A plinth, in art, is something upon which art is placed on.

Solution: White designs allow for the entire hotel to serve as a blank canvas to complement the art with a basis of classic architecture with a unique, modern twist.

Responsibilities: Space planning, rendered floor plan, finish selections, and renderings for rooftop bar and grill. Hotel logo & rooftop bar logo, hand rendered retail space.

Restaurant Elation creates a space within the Plinth Hotel that are both separate and cohesive with the hotel’s design by allowing the guests of the hotel and people of the city to experience it together. It allows the guests to interact with art and be introduced to the many versions of it. The hanging frame partition creates a canvas placing the restaurant itself as a piece of art.

The atmosphere created by The Euphoria Bar is one that is both creative and elegant. Guests are able to enter the bar immediately from the lobby. The bar can serve as a waiting space for the restaurant or as a meeting spot for the guests.

On the opposite side of the rooftop is a more private lounge space as well as open lounge space surrounding a fire pit.

Hospitality

With exuberantly colored lights, The Elude Rooftop Bar & Grill is where the Miami nightlife thrives. The large aluminum piece of art is one of the focal points as guests are able to enjoy live performances when available or can be used as a continuation of the restaurant seating. Private lounges are located along the perimeter of the rooftop to be more secluded for private parties. The pool also offers a different type of atmosphere with a lounge space centered and level with the pool.

The main areas holding stock on the sales floor are along the walls using the custom shelving units. Built into the shelving units are the refrigerators used for keeping the famous cheese at the correct temperature. Under cabinet storage was mandatory due to the constant restocking of the shelves and small children. In the middle of the sales floor are movable gondolas holding t-shirts and gift items that are sold as impulse buys.

Sweetgum Brewing Co. created a company where local people could enjoy local beer. Through this design, guests walk immediately into the tasting area which is created to resemble the speakeasies during the prohibition era with its dark woods, green velvet lounge areas, and low lighting. The fermentation room with its striking copper fermentors is visible through the bar so the customers can view part of the brewing process. The brewing area and storage is left open for ease of movability.

The brewing area is a space where customers have an option to tour and see the brewing process first-hand. The dark walls are carried through to this space as well as the copper fermentors that are also seen through the windows behind the bar. A sliding barn door is used to separate the brewing area from the business space. A transparent glass wall is used to separate the tasting room from the brewing space so guests are able to view the entire process at all times.

1st Floor Plan Evidence Based Design: The design concept of DNA and gel electrophoresis is expressed by using the extremely versatile furniture manufactured by Steelcase. The majority of the furniture selections were selected based on research and evidence retrieved from the Steelcase 360 Magazine. Most workers do not like to be stagnate at all times of the day and prefer to be active. The research also states that it is bad health-wise. With that in mind, this concept is tailored to that need. Not all employees are the same; some people feed off of other people’s energy and some prefer to be in a more secluded environment. Not every person is created the same and so neither is their work space.

The dermatology clinic and spa are located in separate areas of the building and each have separate entrances. The two entrances are due to the patients’ needs and the actual purpose of the space and the feeling that each provides. The dermatology clinic is kept sterile and clean while the spa focuses on using calm and cool colors.

The exam room is full of natural light from windows and the exam table is located in the center of the room for access on all sides of the patient. The colors are kept light and clean to reflect the natural sunlight that is essential in a dermatology office.

The wall panels contain pieces of crystal to bring in the crystals created in the scoria stone and these panels are used to call out important areas of the lobby. Those areas being the front desk and the small retail area selling skin products.

The quiet room is meant to be used before treatment where the clients can sit and relax. The quiet room also has a water feature for soothing clients visually and to reduce any outside noise.

D e s i g n Hotel Side Chair Objective:

Conceptual sketches

Create a chair used in a hospitality setting. Duration - 2 Weeks Individual Project

Solution: A hotel guest room chair reflecting the Scandinavian design creating comfort as well as modern aesthetics.

Software: Rhino & Photoshop Rendered angles

74

Creative

The hotel side chair was inspired from the Scandinavian design using simple and clean lines throughout the entire chair. With the chair-back angled slightly it allows for a side chair to be more comfortable than usual, especially with its thick upholstered seat and back. A light gray wool fabric and a dark wood stain was selected to mimic the popular mid-century aesthetics.
