Cisco training offers a three-exam path and a four-exam path whereby you need to choose the order to follow to pass your CCNP exam. This is a personal decision to be made by each CCNP candidate. Well from the experience of many CCNPs worldwide, you will be able to make a sound decision in this regard.

For most of the CCNP professionals they will tell you that most basic exam to take is CCNA exam as it comes in handy when taking on your BSCI exam. It is thus recommended that you also take the same path and do the CCNA exam first. After completing your CCNA exam, you will realize that many topics you will learn in BSCI are almost related and familiar to you from CCNA studies.

Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN), 642-811 and Building Cisco Remote Access Networks (BCRAN), 642-821, are considered as the middle exams. The two exams are almost equal in terms of advantage but many candidates prefer taking the switching exam than the remote one later.

Like many Cisco training professionals, it is recommended that you take the Cisco Internetwork troubleshooting (CIT) exam last. This is because the exam requires you put into action all the skills learnt while taking the CCNA, BSCI, BCMSN and BCRAN exams. Most of the candidates have reported success on the exam when they actually take it last. Taking the three-exam path means you will be taking a composite exam (9642-891) which combines the BSCI and BCMSN exams. It is best that you took this exam first as it builds nicely with your CCNA skills. The BCRAN exam is best taken after the composite exam and then taking the troubleshooting exam last.

The path you actually choose to take your exams will have determined the certification you will pursue. With the CCNP exam being a test of your networking skills, taking prior exams that help you develop a firm foundation in networking is crucial and necessary. CCNA and CCNP exams will thus be helpful in grounding you with the necessary networking knowledge and skills required in CCIE.
