KAMAS CAVE GREYHOUND SANCTUARY JANUARY 2015 NEWSLETTER JIM pictured below, has just found his forever home after nearly 2 years in the kennel with us now we hope it will be Phil’s turn…
Hi! My name is Phil and I’ve been in the kennels here at Kama’s Cave for over 700 days! We get some great food here and the best of care BUT I would love to upgrade to a nice kingsize bed or large sofa to do my sleeping on. Can anyone give me a home and provide me with one???
I am 7 years old. I arrived hungry, underfed and very sad but I am now the clown of the kennels! I am a fun dog to know and would love to meet you. Please contact Ann to ask about me x

LOOKING FOR A HOME STEVIE
WALK A KENNEL DOG
Stevie came to us after being turned away from another homing centre as they said he was too strong on his lead, in the beginning Stevie was very head strong on his lead but with time and patience he has calmed down no end and is a lovely fun loving boy. He has been to a Meet and Greet at Wisbech PAH and was as good as gold, several people walked him on his lead of different ages and he was fine with all of them. He is fine with other greyhounds but not very good with small dogs. He will need to go to a home where there is another Greyhound as he becomes a bit unsure of himself when he is on his own and does love the company of other dogs, he is sharing a kennel with Mary at the moment and every afternoon after dinner they are cuddled up together. Please give him the chance he deserves…
LOOKING FOR A HOME - BILL
Bill is a black boy who loves to play in the paddock with the toys. His racing name was Keeper Bill and he was born 8 August 2008. He hasn’t been with us long but has settled in well and is a little cuddle bug!
If anyone would like to come and take a kennel dog out for the morning we will be starting this on Saturday 7th February for anyone who is interested, and then every first Saturday of the month. If you can collect a dog between 9.00 – 9.30 in the morning which is just before we feed so will not disturb the other dogs from eating their dinners and then bring them back in the afternoon between 1.00 and 3.00 – This gives us time to get on with chores and feeding for the other dogs and also allows you time to go somewhere nice. If anyone is interested in taking a dog out for the morning please message me Ann Brandon or email ann@kamascave.com or call on 01406 330459 prior to the day so that we can arrange what dogs to go with what people as I know some of you have small dogs etc and also some are more experienced than others and I can give you a dog that will be enjoyable and not a worry to you.
LOOKING FOR A HOME - ADELE Black girl born May 2009. Adele’s race name was Flighty Mike she had 70 races at Yarmouth. When she first came to us she was very dominant with her food, but now she has learned that you don’t go hungry here and there is as much as you can eat so she has chilled a lot. We have had her indoors and she was clean, we have not taken her out on a collar and lead yet but we will be small dog testing in a couple of weeks.
LOOKING FOR A HOME - DANI Dani’s racing name was Danielles Bieber and she had 106 races at Yarmouth, she was born 7th August 2009. She is a really pretty little girl black with snowflakes. She is a complete extrovert and is always buzzing and happy.
NEW YEAR MESSAGE Paul and I and all the dogs at Kama’s Cave would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. Looking back over the last year, we have had a funny year again with lots of ups and downs, but we have got through as always and live to fight another year. Homing the dogs has been very quiet this year but I am pleased to say that all the dogs we have homed this year have lovely homes and I am so pleased. We have raised lots of money this year to help with the upkeep of the dogs and their medicines and vet bills etc which we thank all of you for, we have managed to plod on with the kennel extension and hopefully fingers crossed next year it will be finished. We would like to say thank you to everyone for all of your hard work this year in helping to find the dogs homes and for all of your help at shows etc it has been brilliant. This coming year we are going to concentrate on getting dogs in homes as always, but we are going to try and get out and about and do lots of local meets and greets, I can only do so many so if anyone else would like to organise one at a local supermarket or Pets at Home then please feel free to do so, the dogs will appreciate it. We are going to attend the big shows this year and I know Mary and Margaret have lots of Craft Fairs etc to attend. If anyone has any local dog shows or village shows that they would like to do then please book them up I can always send or meet you to give you things to sell. We really do want to concentrate this year on spreading the word of what wonderful pets these dogs make so if anyone has any ideas or wants any leaflets to hand out then please shout. Thank you all so much for all of your hard work and continuing support for everything that you do for the dogs here at Kama’s Cave.

VOLUNTEERING IS FUN! MAKE NEW FRIENDS HELP THE DOGS HAVE FUN!
Life with Sally Happy New Year everyone! It’s been a fairly quiet period since the last time I wrote. For the last couple of months prior to Christmas & New Year, I have had the pleasure of Dad at home with me, as he was in between jobs. I really enjoyed his company, much better than being home alone & more walkies every day too! We did visit the Nene Valley Railway at the end of September where I had the company of Toby & his Mum & Dad for another enjoyable day on the trains. Then we went back to the North Norfolk Railway in November where I caught up with my good friend Winnie & her Mum & Dad. I enjoyed a couple of Greyhound Walks at Brandon Country Park & I have also been enjoying some of my favourite public houses including the Angel Inn at
ME AND MY MATE WINNIE ON THE TRAINS
.
Yarwell A new place I really enjoy going to is the Ship Inn at Brandon Creek with its roaring fire which is most welcome at this time of year! We did another greyhound meet & greet at A. T. Johnson in Downham Market before we had a busy weekend just before Christmas. We went to Kama’s Cave for their first ever Open Day on the Saturday before we went to the World Horse Welfare at Snetterton on the Sunday for the Christmas Cracker dog show. I had a great time there picking up three rosettes. I got a second in Fancy Dress, second in Best Movement & a third for Rear of the Year! Toby & family also came over for the weekend & they all really enjoyed their time with us. I also squeezed in a visit to see Alice in her new forever home & I am pleased to report that she is getting on really well with her new Mum & Dad! I had a really enjoyable Christmas. Thanks to everyone for lots of lovely presents! In between Christmas & New Year, Mum & Dad took me back to the Mid Norfolk Railway for their Christmas Diesel Gala. Once again I had the company of Winnie & her Mum & Dad. Star of the show here was a brand new Class 68 & I must say it was very smart. The compartment we travelled in was nice & snug making me very sleepy! We started the New Year with a greyhound walk at Ferry Meadows Country Park. Organized by Mum, the walk attracted a good turnout of 19 dogs (see pictured), the perfect way to start the year! Just as we went to press, I had been on my first Greyhound Walk event at Brandon Country Park & Dad has now returned to work so I am home alone again. Boo!! Take care

LOOKING FOR A HOME - LOTTIE LOOKING FOR A HOME - SYD Syd is 6 years old and was a star performer on the track. He has been to many events with us and been an absolute star and everyone falls in love with him. Sadly this has not found him his forever home and he is still looking…
Lottie’s racing name was Charlottes Fancy and was born April 2009. She had 162 races! Lottie is a lovely little girlie with a sweet nature she is a very active greyhound. We have taken her out to several meets and greets and she wants to spend all day with her paws on your shoulders having hugs.
LOOKING FOR A HOME MARY
Mary is a lovely girlie, her racing name was Glenbrack Mary and had 64 races finishing at Perry Bar. She was born 7 May 2009. Mary was a bit unsettled when she first arrived but is much happier now and has started asking for fusses and coming for lots of attention. Mary is a very large bitch but she is all soft and cuddly.
BARRY & WINNIE Kamas Cave have stepped in to work with a new group called Sighthound StopGap. The new group has been set up to help hounds that are in desperate need of help. There is an increase of dogs being advertised on the internet as free to good homes which attracts the wrong sort of owners, Sighthound StopGap visited the home of one of these dogs and found 4 hounds in need of rescue, living in cramped cages with no bedding. Thankfully they were able to take them all and one of them, Barry, has come to Kamas Cave to recover and find his new home. Winnie came straight from a trainer who no longer wanted her and she is also now at KC. They arrived on 22 December. Both dogs have settled in at KC very well. Both have been to the vets and had a full MOT - Barry has been castrated and came home and ate all his tea. Winnie has had her teeth cleaned, had an old stitch left from her spay removed by the vet and has had a lump on her toe looked at. Barry is a sweetheart and turning into a beautiful greyhound. Winnie is a lovely bubbly little girl. Both will be looking for their forever homes in due course. The funding for their care is completely by public donations - any help would be much appreciated, thank you x
BARRY Kennel Extension update - We have been pressing on with the new kitchen area, see picture left. Talking of kitchen all the dogs loved their roast beef with all the trimmings for their Christmas dinner! Paul is also progressing with the refurbishment of the kennels - see picture right - with just 4 left to do.
LOOKING FOR A SPECIAL HOME - BRETT We have known Brett for several years now - he has had 2 homes and been returned twice - we have learnt that a change in circumstances makes him panic and be dirty, so he needs a quiet home where he will be rarely left on his own, with a set routine. After an initial panicky spell which we treated with Zylkene tablets with get success, he has settled back into life at the kennels very well. However he has been out-and-about to events and it is plain to see that he loves going out for walks and socialising, so he desperately needs a new home where he can have the one-to-one love, care and attention he wants. He is small dog friendly and has the experience of living in a home. Please spread his name far and wide and lets get him the special home he so deserves.

FRED Came to us with an untreated broken hock but with medication he is 100% better and is now looking for his forever home
MURTY
RUPERT
Beautiful old boy who just likes to snooze away the days. Murty arrived with us on 4th January last year and had spent the whole of his life in a kennel, we took him indoors so that he could at least see what a house was like and there he stayed. He was 12 in September and his legs have really started to fail him, we are fighting a loosing battle with his corns , however over the last couple of months he has rallied up so please can you sponsor him and give him some extra love & support to keep this old man going.
A real clown! Fun dog. In a foster home
FRENCHIE
TIGGY
A lurcher found dodging traffic alone and unwanted. Will stay at Kamas Cave with Ann & Paul. Now affectionately called Ricketts due to his legs not being formed 100% probably due to his poor early life. Rodneys playmate.
A happy fun loving girlie who is in a foster home living with Sam.
RODNEY Came to us as a pup from Spain where he was found on the streets without his mum. Nearly died on arrival in the UK but is now a bouncy, though nervous, little lad. Frenchies playmate.
SKYE This black girl has been with us a while now. She has a very high prey drive and this, coupled with her advancing years, is meaning that she is proving to be a very difficult dog to re-home. Hence we have added her to our Sponsor Scheme.
LOOKING FOR A HOME
PHIL
Our front page star!
Phil’s racing name is Power Phil. He has been with us for 2 years now and is long overdue finding his forever home. He is a lovely playful lad and would provide his new owner with a lot of fun and entertainment lots of laughter guaranteed! He is a laid back boy but loves his walkies and getting out and about. He arrived with us as a poorly and underweight,, a very sad boy, but that has all changed now and he is the clown of the kennels. He really hasn’t put a paw wrong in the 2 years we’ve known him and we really can’t understand why his handsome looks keep getting passed by. If you could give give Phil a home please contact us.
Newsletters Like what you are reading? Make sure you do not miss out on the next copy! Please contact Lorraine and sign up for our newsletters that come out every 3 months. We do ask for a donation of £5 per year towards costs.
Finally,
I wish to make a plea for your email addresses! I know that receiving the newsletters through the post is a nicer way to read them but with postage and printing costs continually going up (like everything), it is very much appreciated if you let us know your email address so we can email the newsletters to you. It saves time and effort too. The more people who receive their newsletters in this way, the more pennies are made for the dogs. Thank you x I hope that you have added our planned events into your diaries and can come along and support us. We always need help at these events, especially if you are dog-less and could help out on our stall or even look after one of the kennel dogs for the day. Please get in touch if you can offer, thank you. Best wishes

KAMA’S CAVE is run by ANN BRANDON and her partner PAUL. In 1998 Ann was looking for work and took the job of a greyhound kennel maid. The dogs won her heart and she began fundraising on behalf of greyhound re-homing charities. She set up a fostering scheme, taking the dogs from kennels and placing them in foster homes where they could be introduced to living in a house. Then Ann would set about finding the dogs their forever homes, where they could spend the rest of their lives in the comfort they deserve. Ann and Paul found they had so many dogs needing homes, they decided that they needed to dedicate more time to this and build some kennels of their own. So Paul gave up training dogs and Ann gave up her job as a secretary and they moved to Bury St Edmunds, where they had space for 14 dogs. Unfortunately the property at Bury was only rented and a house move was soon necessary. Here began KAMA’S CAVE as it is today, based at Holbeach Drove in Lincolnshire. With heated kennels for 20 dogs, a fenced user friendly enclosure for these great athletes to let off steam and many plans for improvement ahead, the future for KAMA’S CAVE is looking the best yet. With your support they can help many more greyhounds in need of their expert care, love and attention.
