__Roosevelt Island / Blackwell’s Island: The Other _ferry terminal

_ field (trans)formation

Blackwell’s Island embodies the alternate past of Manhattan. The

island’s initial urban structure, similar to it’s identity furthers away from it it’s counterpart, the western burrow. Much of the historical documentation (this being until 1970) was associated with the mentally and physically ill, hosting asylums, prisons and orphanages. It’s programmatic past defined the formal appearance hidden in landscape. The island retained objects within a field of channeling networks emphazied by constructed geometries. Manhattan the antonym, situates itself as a field condition where the block is completely autonomous from the connecting axis. Part of the competition proposal (part of the 99 year lease) from OMA in the late 1970’s, the island would become an extension of Manhattan, deferring from it’s essence and followed an interconnected field network . “The Other” factor quoted by Philip Johnson in the same competition would have been obliterated. Roosevelt Island hosts a constructed composition which acknowledges Manhattan as the opposition. Manhattan changes from channels to constructing factors. The compositon elevates past objects as monuments and illustrates the future trajectory of the island independent and isolated from the other burrows. The objects are placed in relationship to previous monuments. The tectonic characteristics distinguish the microclimate and unique

__Habit : Cricket Shelter _Modular Edible Insect Farm

_ _Ecology __installation prototype with Terreform One

The continuous impact of climate dynamics, armed conflicts, non-stop

urbanization and economic upheavals present a distinct need for a hybrid architectural typology to deliver parallel solutions for food and shelter in each distressed region. This is a dual-purpose shelter and modular insect farm bounded into one structure. It’s intended for the impeding food crisis, where people will need access to good sources of alternative protein, as raising livestock is not possible at our current rate of comsumption and resource extraction. The United Nations has mandated insect sourced protein is a food distribution problem. This impacts the diets of all peoples across the globe. Within the system developed around the life cycle of the cricket the structure wraps to form an inclosure dedicated to accomodate the user and be able to connect or “plugin” this individual farm to an infinite variations of different and possible harvesting typologies to be introduced into an on going catalogue. The process of design and construction formed symbiotic relationship which enabled the research team (us) to fully experiment with the form and function in a “trial & error” method. As such fabrication was the catalyst to acommodate the shelter’s dual function.

__Firenze : Battistero Super Superficial _UNESCO provocation The Baptistery of Saint Giovanni in Florence has become

a symbol of tourist attraction for Tuscany. The city with it’s World Heritage Site status has undergone multiple preservation efforts with the requirements status by UNESCO in which traditional western ideals of architectural preservation have been put in place. The baptistery as the center of the main piazza to the titan of the dome persists as a superficial entity only recognized for it’s ever standing facade. As a provocation to both UNESCO’s agenda and italian preservation techniques the baptistery has been preserved as a billboard which encompasses the picturesque qualities that must be maintained to retain “attractiveness”. This renders the architectural object as a demonstration of its current cultural significance, purely superficial.

__NYC : Gowanus Technical Academy _affordable housing reinvented

_ NYC Urban Planning Research Studio

As a part of the NYC: Urban Planning Research Studio in collabora-

tion with the community of Gowanus, the project Gowanus Technical Academy introduces a possible reality to the neighborhood. The project aims to factor the socioeconomic shift of Gowanus and incorporate the new strategies for urban planners as new zoning requirements being implemented in New York City. While this is a plausible proposal for a real estate venture the project speculates on the possibilities of creating experimental affordable housing typologies for the city. The design based on a hybrid of an exquisite corpse operation of dutch and swiss modern housing complexes enables the exploration of creating interior spaces that house communities by engaging program as an organ system with different functions. The vocational school as stated represents a reaction to the current need for education in the area as well it investigates the combination of housing with this type of institution. The project by incorporating an intestinal track joins all the major components into open and attictive spaces.

__Singularity + Anthropecene : Good Vibrations _ Nanotechnology Facility + Spa _ _Performance __ in collaboration with Sarah Tsang

Noise and vibrations have become new age pollutants in urbanity, inhib-

iting the construction of research facilities in cities. This “predicament produced in urban environments and in nanotechnology facilities are not to be eliminated, as they can be translated into performance. Vibrations are deployed in three integrated systems resonanting three senses, those being sight, sound and touch. Water captures the vibrations from high production centers on site and mitigate the vibrations through movement. Patterns emerge from the vibration produced from the centers and reacha visual state. Machines have become an integral element to Nanotechnology facilities and are responsible for the majority of vibrations produced on site. As a form of channeling the vibrations of machines this equipment connects to metal panels that function similarly to key notes on an organ and produce sound. Touch, being the only exterior system, attaches to the facade. The wind on site is produced by imidiated wind tunnels and is captured through slit openings on the exterior system, the air passes through and reaches maximum speed reaching underground containers that shoot of the garden and escapes in vibrating patterns.

__Faรงade : (Morph)ing Bay _precedent study _ faรงade Morphosis The exterior of a building hosts a series of systems that reg-

ulate the interior. It also determines much of the performance associated with both concept and pragmatic features of a building. Utilizing a bay system a facade can utilize repetition to systematize its functions and layers. Using Cooper Union by Morphosis in NYC as a precedent informs the new dowm facade with various layers of intervention between material and function. The bay comprised of a lower level with complete exposure implies entrance while the upper portion proves effective for privacy. The building by itself is made of concrete compromising the first layer. Then a stainless steel frame holds the punctured metal panels that allow air to enter but filter light. The slight opening are windows. The bay is multiplied, rotated, mirrored or cut to allow for all functions inside to receive light.

__Voyeurism : A Greek Play _theatrically mondain

_composition as instrument

Mondaine programmatic functions impose the user to interact with the

task presented in a public setting. These contemplate notions of voyeurism as function begins to face due to context. However, the act of seeing and being seen reaches a new heights when . As an internal strategy the public function transforms into a greek theater where the user as well as the exterior viewer become part of a play. The inhibitor now are subject to the wondering eye as well become performers.

__SOHO : Voids _fashion district

_inversely carved

South of Houston Street depicts New York’s ongoing state

of gentrification. it’s history showcases the inverse relationship of program development and the dwelling typologies of the past social constructs since the late 1800’s Hell’s Hundred Acres occupied a significant portion of the major locations for culture development in mid 20th century. However with its growing popularity the intense effect caused higher end commerce to overshadow the once dominant creative atmosphere of the urban setting. New program development deduced from context research directs to the extreme inverse effect. SOHO would host more high end retail and housing. A design for a slot site has potential to translate the inverse relation to built form. The proximity to opposing social constructs determines the two opposing spaces. Voids perform in the same manner as space filled with function while the actual floor plan and slot are empty. Housing integrates in the void, leaving everything else to operate as a shell. Voids perform as beams of light which fill the empty dark interior. These reach down to hover above the dweller where they can work into the empty containers and view the outside.
