eyecatching golden moments When your clients are mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, make sure your DMC adds a visit to the golden monkeys within their itinerary. Personally, we recommend seeing the monkeys the day before the gorillas, as it helps you acclimatise to the altitude, as well as give a good idea of the terrain you’ll be encountering on a gorilla trek. The golden monkeys live in the lower reaches of the mountains and are fully habituated, allowing for real close-up encounters with a lively and sizeable troop of these charming creatures.

DISCOVER CONGO Maintaining a strategy for representing lodges and camps in less visited parts of Africa as well as mainstream destinations, Kamili is delighted to be marketing Congo Conservation Company (CCC), three Odzala Discovery Camps in Congo-Brazzaville.
“Kamili first visited Congo in 2012 with Leslie Nevison, prior
to Wilderness’ launch. These luxury camps have significantly raised accommodation standards in the region and we are simply delighted to be involved with Odzala Discovery Camps in marketing the properties and their packages. Odzala is a pioneering, exciting, adventurous and yet safe ‘product’ for Africa specialist travel professionals to add into their offering!
Odzala is a near-mythical place of astounding biodiversity - a place few people have ever had the chance to visit. Odzala Discovery Camps are proud to be able to offer a unique, lifechanging opportunity to visit the forests of the Congo Basin, in safety and comfort.
LANGO CAMP
”
Lango presents incredible views out onto the open marshy bai in front of the Camp – one of the most arresting views of any camp in Africa. The bai holds a magnetic attraction for huge flocks of African green pigeons and grey parrots, as well as herds of forest buffalo by day and forest elephants by night. A real highlight of a stay at Lango is the chance to explore the Lekoli and Mambili Rivers by motorboat, traditional pirogue, or even kayak.
Clients can experience the ultimate safari adventure as they explore the towering forests, crystal-clear streams and expansive open savannah of north-west Congo: track Western Lowland Gorillas through pristine rainforest and discover a mosaic of grasslands and waterways as you search out unique birds and wildlife. This is a safari like no other, and today, it is finally within reach.

C ONGO
M B OKO CAMP
Mboko Camp’s twelve guest rooms extend along the banks of a free-flowing tributary of the Lekoli River. Situated in an area of lush meadow-like savannah, frequented by forest buffalo, forest elephant and spotted hyaena, Mboko gives a sense of the scale of Odzala whilst also allowing guests to focus on some of the smaller details.
NGAGA CAMP
Ngaga Camp is located just outside the park boundary in the Ndzehe concession, overlooking a beautiful open glade above a forest stream. It is a focal point for world-class research as well as unforgettable primate encounters, being the perfect base to track Western Lowland Gorillas. Ngaga’s unique design evokes the fun and mystery of childhood treehouses where, from the six elevated guest rooms, wraparound walkways allow guests to peer directly into the forest canopy.
GETTING THERE
Odzala can be reached either by road or by air from Brazzaville. All visitors to Odzala are required to first visit Brazzaville to complete immigration and customs formalities. Clients are also required to obtain a letter of invitation (LOI) well in advance of their travels, which Congo Conservation Company assists with. From Brazzaville the camp can arrange a transfer, booking flights on EC Air to Ollombo. This is followed by a road transfer to the Etoumbi Hotel, where guests will overnight in a comfortable CCC-operated facility before crossing the Likouala-Mossaka river by pontoon barge and then on to the camps.

a ne w a n gl e o n t h e m a s ai m a ra In December 2015, Kamili took a trip to Kenya to visit each of our five very different camps in the Masai Mara. We were astonished by the diversity of experiences, as well as the fascinating history behind the creation of each. Prepare to be surprised by what we learnt.

ba secamp ma s ai mara
wilderness camp
Scenically located on the Talek River on the edge of the Mara Reserve, this 12-room camp was Basecamp Explorer’s first Kenyan property and was the first to receive gold eco-rating.
This is a lovely little intimate camp made up of just 5 simple yet really stylish and spacious tents within the acoustic-enhancing Saddle Valley. It’s in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, and adhering to Basecamp Explorer’s eco-philosophy, the camp is fully solar.
It’s set in a woodland with 70,000+ indigenous trees planted since the camp was set up which attracts a host of endemic birds. Guests are encouraged to follow the footsteps of the Obama family (who stayed in 2006) and to plant a tree during their stay.
We would definitely recommend the 2-hour morning bush walk which often ends with a fabulous (and surprise) bush breakfast. The new Mara Walking Trail launched in February 2016. This usually involves safari walking from Wilderness Camp to Eagle View, with stops en route at fly-camps.
Extensive room upgrades are underway, along with major changes to the main area. We were extremely impressed with our local Masai guide Tonkei.
8
eagle view The lodge is so well named, as the panoramic views from the rooms and main communal areas are simply breath-taking. This is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing views we’ve ever experienced. You can’t take your eyes away from the savannah that stretches below and beyond and that’s even before the wildlife spotting commences! In 2013 it was named one of the world’s top 25 eco-lodges by National Geographic Traveller. Owners, Basecamp Explorer, played a major part in the setting up of the Mara Naboisho conservancy and instigated many of the amazing community-focused initiatives.
9
sentinel camp The Camp comprises seven well spread-out and large luxury tents that are completely hidden in a riverine forest overlooking the banks of the Mara River, deep within Marsh Pride territory. Crisp, white cotton sheets, 4 poster beds and all the trimmings of a bygone safari era, Sentinel is delightfully old-fashioned! As you’d imagine, this location guarantees outstanding gameviewing. Owner Peter Twycross’ gentle manner makes him a lovely host, especially over dinner.

lo s okwan camp
c ombine the camp s
Located in the Lemek Conservancy - the smallest in the Mara – Losokwan camp is excellent for intimate wildlife experiences. You can see the migration here from July through until November.
There are dozens of properties in the Mara to choose from, yet we confidently boast we have 5 of the best right here, especially when you consider their exceptionally attractive rack rates. With different aspects of the Mara evident within the offering of these camps, combining two, three or even four of them (for those lucky enough to have time on their hands) can make for an exceptional and diverse Mara experience.
On the site of the original Kicheche, the 6 luxury tents nestle into the bush, completely hidden by the surrounding forest. We particularly liked the simple yet stylish design with subtle brown and cream interiors and furnishings. Losokwan’s entire camp staff including senior guide, Jackson Kuda, are noteable for their warm and friendly manner and sense of humour.

Elephant Watch Camp – the c ontinuing c onservation story Following the hugely popular BBC2 series – This Wild Life – the UK travellers are keen to experience Saba Douglas-Hamilton’s delightful family-run property in Samburu, Elephant Watch Camp. the 1970s Iain investigated the status of elephants throughout Africa and was the first to alert the world to the ivory poaching holocaust. He founded Save the Elephants in 1993 in order to create an effective and flexible NGO dedicated specifically to elephants. Iain was awarded an OBE, and two of the highest conservation prizes – The Order of the Golden Ark, and the Indianapolis Prize and Lilly Medal – for his conservation work.
Wildlife film-maker and conservationist, Saba, is keen to emphasise that Elephant Watch Camp expands ‘eco-tourism’ by engaging at a deeper level with the wildlife and landscape to offer 'conservation tourism’. Situated in the dry north of Kenya, in a land of endless rugged beauty and untamed wilderness, the camp perches on the sandy banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu National Reserve. This ecosystem has one of the largest elephant populations in Kenya, each one individually identified and studied by researchers at Save the Elephants, an NGO founded by Saba’s father, a world renowned zoologist, Iain Douglas-Hamilton.
Oria and Iain Douglas-Hamilton’s daughters Saba and Mara, along with Saba’s husband Frank Pope, are all assuming evergreater roles within the organisations and ventures that their have established.
Iain and his wife, Oria Douglas-Hamilton, have built the Elephant Watch portfolio from their love and passion for conservation and Africa’s abundant wildlife. In 1928 Oria’s parents, Mario Rocco and Giselle Bunau-Varilla, arrived from Italy and France to hunt elephants in what was then the Belgian Congo. When Giselle fell pregnant with their first child, the couple set off on foot from what is now Rwanda towards Lake Victoria with sixty porters shouldering their life’s possessions. They ended their journey in Naivasha, where they bought a farm on the lake’s northern shoreline and had 3 children, Doriano, Mirella and Oria. The stories the family told on their return to Paris are said to have inspired Giselle’s cousin, Jean de Brunhoff, to pen his famous children’s books on Babar the Elephant. Oria met Iain Douglas-Hamilton while he was in Tanzania studying elephants for his doctorate thesis at Oxford. During 12
Elephant Watch Camp is closely connected with Save The Elephants, keeping up to date with all new births, matings, or changes in the families. The camps guides have been trained by Save the Elephants to recognise each of the 66 elephant families that are resident in Samburu, most of whom have recorded histories that date back to the foundation of STE’s research camp in 1997. Guides are also part of the Lion Watch team, gathering data on big cats for Ewaso Lions, an NGO that strives to improve the relationship between pastoralists and predators. The Elephant Watch team aim to lead by example to encourage sustainability as a way of life, and actively promote an antipollution lifestyle (recycling and reusing wherever possible), organic farming, and self-sufficiency in food, electricity and water. They use tourism and trade to promote wildlife conservation by providing jobs and sales outlets for the local communities, to educate nomadic children, and to train wildlife guides and chefs to the highest levels. Up to 90% of the camps workforce is local, mainly from the Samburu community. Many Elephant Watch Camp guests have become passionate supporters of Save the Elephants, donors to the Elephant Crisis Fund, or have sponsored students to attend secondary school or University through the Elephant Watch Scholarship Fund.

KONKAMOYA LODGE, KAFUE
Mayukuyuku BUSH CAMP, Kafue
Located on the shores of Lake Itzhi Tezhi, all of their various dining and sundowner locations provide outstanding views across the lake. This is arguably at its most magnificent in the early evening as the sun sets across golden waters. Combined with Andrea and Laura’s italian influence on the cuisine, its easy to see that game-viewing isn’t the only draw to this lovely lodge.
The main areas at this lovely little bush camp have been stylishly upgraded using rocks from the nearby Kafue River along with polished concrete to create more solid flooring. The roof has been re-thatched, using palms from the riverbank, whilst the new décor has all been created using natural materials, collected from around the camp.

river farmhouse, living stone
Waterberry has recently welcomed a new hosting team who share responsibility for making sure the guests have the time of their lives.
Take a look at arguably the most stylish swimming pool in Zambia! Photographed from a little seen angle, this shot shows off the size of the delightful infinity pool. For more images, see www.riverfarmhouse.com
From left to right, Caroline has a wealth of experience having worked for both Bushtracks and Wilderness Safaris. Julie is a qualified dietician and her work with disadvantaged children in her native South Africa makes her perfect to support Waterberry’s extensive community initiatives. Charlotte was born into the hospitality industry as her parents run a small lodge in Livingstone and she studied business administration at university in Namibia.
Available on an exclusive basis only, the four-bedroomed private house comes complete with household staff, guide and chef. Sleeping a maximum of eight, it’s already proving hugely popular with UK tour operators, especially given the price. Kafu e : not for ev eryon e an d t hat ad d s to i ts a p p ea l To top off these possible sightings, the landscapes are equally stunning with huge open plains at Nanzhila combined with dambos, teak and Miombo forests, as well as Lake Itzhi Tezhi and the Kafue River itself.
PRISTINE WILDERNESS
In north west Zambia, The Kafue National Park has been overlooked for so long but now tourists are starting to recognise just what’s on offer. Kafue is vast, covering around 22,000kmsq making it one of the largest parks in Africa; but unlike many tourist destinations, Kafue is still untouched with its pristine wilderness and stunning landscapes teeming with game and a diversity of bird species.
The river follows a course of approximately 960 kilometres and plays a large role in Zambia’s eco- system, supporting the wildlife of the national park, as well as being a source of water for farmers, irrigation and hydroelectric power. The river’s source is in the Congo and it is the largest and longest river lying entirely within Zambia. The Kafue is a major tributary to the Zambezi River, which it joins in Chirundu at the Zambia / Zimbabwe border.
EPIC DIVERSITY
The flora and fauna of Kafue is incredibly diverse. There is such a wide variety of game, plants, birds, trees and fish all to be found in one National Park. Boasting 500 different species of bird including bee eaters, kingfishers, wattled cranes, saddle billed stalks, Pel’s fishing owl, African fin-foot, goliath heron, hornbills, vultures and eagles, it pleasingly makes your bird list become quite extensive! With 500 species to look out for it will be difficult to put your binoculars down!
Just like its namesake National Park, the Kafue River is also very diverse with areas that are fast flowing with mighty or gentle rapids and slower, more mild sections with sandy banks where you can find nesting crocodiles as well as monitor lizards and otters. Fish eagles call and soar overhead, whilst kingfishers and herons make the most of the abundance of fish in the water. You can take magnificent sunset cruises along the river whist relaxing and enjoying the scenery. You can also take a canoe trip, enabling you to experience the sights and sounds at your own pace. And whether you are a beginner or a keen angler, fishing for Kafue’s five species of bream, fresh water pike and barbell, is a fantastic opportunity.
There are also 20 different species of antelope in the park ranging from puku, bushbuck and impala to sable, roan, sitatunga, blue duiker, reedbuck and oribi. With all these antelope on offer, of course there is also big game such as lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dogs as well as the more elusive nocturnal species like genets, and honey badgers.
EXCLUSIVITY
Wherever you go in Kafue National Park, you feel as though you are the only people there. The remote nature of the lodges, combined with the vastness of the park, allows you to feel completely at one with nature and privileged to be enjoying such wilderness. Every part of the park boasts secluded areas for that exclusive safari experience.

All grown up in the Luangwa Valley
form a village team - “The Super Strikers”. Other local villages followed suit and the Mfuwe Junior Football League was created. In June 2011, Project Luangwa helped fund colourful kits for the teams, through generous donations from guests. There are now 20 teams – divided into under 12s and under 15s competing at weekends, with over 400 young boys involved. Kafunta also assists boys aged 16+ to compete with older players through leagues in Chipata and Lusaka, giving them vital exposure to the world outside their own rural areas.
Just like Kafunta River Lodge – his home for all of his 16 years – Luke Cowan has grown and developed into something pretty amazing! Son of Kafunta’s owners, Ron and Anke Cowan, Luke Cowan has had a fairly unique and certainly an exciting childhood growing up in the Zambian bush. He has experienced things most children (and adults!) only dream of. Not only has he spent his developing years surrounded by the extraordinary and diverse environment Zambia offers, he has also used his remarkable upbringing to benefit the local community.
Away f ro m th e b us h …fo r n ow. .
Having been raised in the Luangwa Valley, Luke has developed a real passion for wildlife and has become a keen photographer, producing some exceptionally good images, especially for someone of his tender years. Whilst he now boards at college in Perth, Australia, he frequently visits Kafunta in the school holidays, as that is where his heart lies and he still refers to it as home. In 2017, he hopes to study International Tourism & Marketing in Germany (Anke’s native land) but he’s keen to spend time in the UK too, as he is a big Chelsea FC fan …but we sense the lure of the bush will see Luke permanently back in Zambia in the not too distant future. Josephat, Martin and the other staff at Kafunta can’t wait.
A b u d ding ca r eer in tou ri s m from day one
He started his career in tourism career aged just 7 months old, when he attended his first Indaba! Then, as a toddler, he witnessed the building and opening of Island Bush Camp in 2001 – although being only two at the time, this is probably a landmark he doesn’t recall too clearly! Over the years, several formal home school-teachers have resided at Kafunta, but Luke’s favourite lessons were always the unofficial ones - learning from Kafunta’s guides and the surrounding terrain. With both Josephat and Martin ‘ever present’ guides since the lodge’s opening, they helped instill his love of the African bush.
K i ck i ng of f a c om mu ni t y project
During his younger years, schooling alongside the offspring of other lodge owning families in the Valley, Luke started to venture into the local Mfuwe village to play his beloved football. Soon after, Luke convinced his dad, Ron and a member of his staff to 16

Confetti, bubble baths and lawn mowers! They’ve all played their part in the news from some of our Botswana partners...
Located in the Chobe Forest Reserve, Muchenje Safari Lodge boasts magnificent views in all directions. Raised high upon an escarpment, all rooms are perfectly positioned to overlook the immense reserve below. Exclusive to the honeymoon suite, is the luxurious roll top bath which rests infront of full length glass sliding doors, opening up to unparalleled views across the flood plain.
T r a n q uilit y in the bu s h
Originally a farm, the location of Tuli Safari Lodge is spectacular. Next to the legendary Limpopo River, Tuli is scenically very different to the rest of Botswana, with dominant basalt formations and large areas of sandstone hills and ridges, as well as open grasslands and marshy areas.
Recently back from their honeymoon, the Robinson’s described how ‘the bath was freshly filled and hot awaiting their arrival back from their afternoon game drive.’ Accompanied by a glass of bubbles, the Muchenje team had done everything possible to make the couple’s honeymoon that extra bit special. Mrs Robinson states, ‘the views from the bath at Muchenje were exceptional - completely beyond comparison to anything I have seen from a lodge or hotel before. Mr and Mrs Robinson were able to simply relax and arrive at dinner refreshed and revived.
The lodge’s 10 elegant suites are nestled in picturesque gardens, creating a relaxing retreat, which differs from the more typical safari environment. So after a rewarding game drive or safari walk, clients can relax in this idyllic setting, with the extensive grounds always a few degrees cooler than the surrounding reserve.
Muchenje prides itself on the variety and quality of safari experiences and interactions that it offers. Their intimate wildlife encounters, and fantastic attention to detail at the lodge, as well as friendly and committed staff, make this property the idyllic honeymoon retreat.
Tuli’s gardens resemble a traditional English countryside - a perfect contrast to the surrounding bush. Spacious lawns, shaded by ancient trees, enclose a waterhole, hide and pleasant walking trails.

guess the r ac k r ate c hak a & ki ota ca mp s
It’s been an exciting couple of years for Stacy Readal. As co-owner of Arusha-based Duma Explorer, she had frequently made use of various Serengeti properties for her clients. Because of their budgets, she was mainly using mid-range more affordable camps. But Stacy recognised that the on-going cost of running a camp in the bush is more or less the same, regardless of the level of luxury. So in true Texan style, she decided to open her own circuit of camps, starting with Chaka (in 2014) and then Kiota (in 2015). She chose to ensure her camps were as stylish as possible, with a high level of creature comforts and plenty of women’s touches, but still fairly traditional in their feel. And best of all, she elected to offer mid-market prices. With rack rates at the permanent Kiota Camp in Seronera from $280-390 and Chaka (which moves between Ndutu and Central Serengeti to follow the migration) from $275-425, you can see why they’re gaining so much attention.

A rush a - Not to be mi s s ed !
Often overlooked, or dismissed as a stopover, Arusha National Park is a hidden gem in its own right. Hatari Lodge is located at the far side of the park, at the foot of Mount Meru and offers so many worthwhile and varied activities it justifies spending 3, 4 or even 5 days here!
Hatari Lodge offers a walking safari through Arusha NP to the sparkling waters of the Tululusia Waterfalls. This is an ideal trip into mountain rainforest, which is home to different fauna to most other parts of the entire country. Great Lakes s afaris ’ head guide makes his ow n ‘ s afari’ to the UK
In November 2015, the Ugandan DMC sent their head guide, Peter, on a journey to London for Explore Worldwide Guide Training. We took the opportunity to chat to Peter and find out what he learnt during his time in the UK. hesitate to enquire about things we do not understand. I also think learning a lot on how to be responsible in the field (responsible tourism) will have a big impact on my day-to-day role. Also, take note of every situation and give it your full attention and report to your superior at all times no matter what the situation is.
Can you Briefly introduce your self ?
I am Peter Mukasa Lwembawo, the head guide at Great Lakes Safaris. I am 43 years old and married with 2 beautiful children.
How long have you been a guide for?
I have been a guide for 9 years, but have guided at Great Lakes Safaris for 7 years.
It was a worthwhile investment and it has definitely expanded my knowledge. It gave me great exposure to an international world that I feel has improved me as a person and as a guide.
What are your specialties/area s of expertise?
I have always had a passion for bird watching, but since working at Great Lakes, I have also developed a love for nature interpretation and leading cultural tours.
Did you face any challenges during your t raining in London? None at all besides the coldness!
What value do you think the Explore training added to your guiding skill s ?
Should Great Lakes s afaris and other ground handler s c onsider sending their tour guides in the future?
I gained new experience in handling bigger groups on tours, especially from different countries. I also had a refresher on general guiding skills and I learnt some new first aid skills. I have always believed that working as part of a team is very important, but this was reinforced during the Explore training.
Absolutely! It was so worth it and if the chance arises to take part in other such ventures it would be great to send in your guide because there is nothing greater and better than being trained by a professional.
During my trip, I got valuable exposure to the international world that helped me learn to interact with a variety of people with different cultures.
Great Lakes Safaris pride themselves on providing a high level of personal service, excellent knowledge and a real passion for their country. For more information see www.safari-uganda.com and contact hannah@kamilisafaris.com
How do you think the training can impact on tour guiding?
The exposure to different people with different characters and cultures will expand on guides’ social skills. We should not 28

The main building has also been refurbished with an enlarged kitchen, a new lounge, an expanded bar, new curio shop and a renovated reception area.
The new chalets offer lighter, brighter furniture, décor and soft furnishings, as well as new large glass doors leading to spacious verandahs overlooking the natural surroundings. This makes the experience for the guest even better.
Kibale Forest harbours the greatest variety and concentration of primates found anywhere in Africa. No less than thirteen different species live in this tropical forest. Primate Lodge is the perfect base to explore this national park and begin primate adventures, being only a 5-minute walk from the start of the trek.
Far more spacious and airy, with lavish bathrooms, huge glass windows and glass paneled sliding doors allow the light to come pouring in. The new full-length doors offer 180-degree views of the beautiful surrounding rainforest without guests even having to leave the comfort of their bed. Being at the edge of a rainforest, it’s key to ensure that clients are kept warm when it’s cool outside and cool when it’s warm outside. 5* experience in Bwindi impenetrable forest, uganda Mahogany Springs is the perfect base for gorilla trekking, bird watching and cultural activities in Bwindi. But don’t take our word for it. We have copy and pasted their five latest reviews from Trip Advisor (February 2015) : The view was amazing, staff were great - service was impeccable, fabulous food and the room was fantastic “It was great to come “home” to such a restful and beautiful lodge. The staff are friendly, standards high - our accommodation and meals were wonderful” “The lodge is wonderfully situated with beautiful views over the mountains. The service is excellent, and just want you want to come back to after a day of gorilla tracking” “I spent four nights in Mahogany Springs and the incredibly friendly and helpful staff at this beautiful lodge managed to exceed all of my expectations” “The staff was extremely attentive; Abrahim was extremely accommodating and always there with a smile and to provide whatever you needed!”
So its no surprise that they’ve earned a 5-star rating…or that they are so popular with UK tour operator either.

Somalisa has become a name synonymous with Hwange National Park, the land of the giants, since it first opened to guests over a decade ago. It was founded on the premise of being an authentic safari camp and a haven for professional guides and wildlife alike. Having successfully delivered on this over the years, it has gained a loyal following. Adventure highs & lows in swa ziland
In spite of being the smallest country in Southern Africa, The Kingdom of Swaziland offers plenty of opportunities and surprises for adventure seekers, such as a breath-taking Zip Wire Canopy tour and exhilarating caving. surroundings, offering a wonderful bird’s eye view of Malolotja gorge.
The Kingdom of Swaziland is the perfect choice for adrenaline seekers. In the smallest country of Southern Africa, you can enjoy a wide range of adventure activities from the tree top canopy tour in Malolotaja Nature Reserve to caving the only major granite cave system known in Southern Africa.
From high up in the sky to deep underground, an 800m course of subterranean passages 90m below ground provide a unique cave system formed by the Kophola River that flows underground between Msunduza and Kophola mountains.
The Malolotja zip wire is a heart-in-mouth experience that everyone should try. Situated in a gorge deep in the Malolotja Nature Reserve in northern Swaziland, 11 elevated forest platforms await. The lines begin slow and short to provide a slight taste of what is to come then gradually become more intense, ranging from fast to high (almost 80m off the ground!) to a shaky (but secure) suspension bridge over the Majolamba River.
This is the only major granite cave system known in Southern Africa, and comprises of a series of water-eroded chambers with names such as ‘Key Hole’, ‘French Connection’ and for the Harry Potter Fans, ‘Platform Nine and Three Quarters’. Progress through the caves is slow and strenuous but also exhilarating with belly crawls, body jams and fluttering bats! Swaziland has even more offerings for an adrenaline rush. Other examples include River Tubing down the beautiful Ngwempisi River, climbing and abseiling on Swaziland’s mountains and gorges, white water rafting on the Usutu river, Quad biking the ‘Devils Cauldron’, mountain biking with wildlife at the Milwane Wildlife Sanctuary or trekking at the largest exposed granite pluton in the world!
It can take up to 3 hours to complete, with exceptional views of scenery and fascinating wildlife. Baboon Rock is a favourite for tourists to see the baboons that frequently use it as their sunning spot. This tree top canopy tour provides an opportunity to combine adrenaline with appreciation of the natural environment. As well as being a family friendly activity, the zip wire is also environmentally friendly. The lines go through the trees, rather than cutting them down, having a minimal impact on the surroundings. The bases between each zip blend into the

A ne w Malawi for 201 6 Nkhotakota will become the country’s most important area for elephant conservation and will also see further translocation of 600 antelope to the reserve. Black rhino, lion, cheetah and wild dog once existed here but are now all locally extinct.
The warm heart of Africa is becoming a serious contender to some of its larger neighbours with the recent investment in its most popular wildlife destination Liwonde National Park and the lesser explored wilderness of Nkhotakota Wildlife reserve.
African Parks, working with Malawi’s wildlife authority will also focus on improved protection of the areas to include fencing of boundaries, increased park security and working with the local community.
This July will see the start of one of the continent’s biggest wildlife translocations. Five hundred elephants will be relocated from Majete Wildlife Reserve and Liwonde National Park into a sanctuary in Nkhotakota Wildlife reserve.
These developments will result in a total transformation of Malawi’s wildlife and safaris, and the country will become one of the most complete destinations in Africa - lake, landscape, culture and now wildlife experiences of the very highest quality. Warm, welcoming and unspoilt, Malawi really is just waiting to be discovered.
Plans to reintroduce locally extinct species are also afoot with cheetah and wild dogs to be restocked in Liwonde in the next 3 years and further plans for the king of the jungle to return soon after.

Successful reintroduction of lions into Majete national park in 2012 has seen their population double in recent years.
