New to the Symphony?

We get it. To outsiders, classical music can seem like a strange ancient ritual, something only enjoyed as a member of a secret organization. But we don’t want it to be. The two most asked questions people have before attending their first classical music concert are:

What should I wear?

First and foremost, you should be comfortable. We don’t have a dress code, so wear what feels right for you. If you love a good excuse to dress to the nines, go for it. Or if you would prefer to keep it more casual, you won’t be the only one dressed down. We’re happy to have you join us and hope that you have a wonderful concert experience; your concert attire doesn’t matter.

When should I clap?

Audiences used to be rowdier at classical concerts, and then around the 20th Century the “new normal” became to wait until a piece was finished before applauding. The problem is not everyone knows about this unwritten rule. Generally, if a piece has multiple movements (think different chapters in a book) most people now wait until they are completed before applauding. That said, if you feel moved to applaud before one of these “allowed” times, feel free to do so. Nobody on the stage is going to glare at you or try to make you feel bad. They’re probably going to be quite pleased to hear that you are enjoying the performance
