RED NOSE RIDES AGAIN TO GET YOU HOME The safe ride home initiative is back this month, with donations going to help amateur athletes through PacificSport Interior BC
W
hether you have been out and enjoying company with a few beverages or it is snowing heavily and you aren’t too comfortable driving home, Operation Red Nose is here for you. After taking a pandemic-caused hiatus in 2020, the safe ride home initiative is back, with donations going to help amateur athletes through PacificSport Interior BC. Those volunteering for and using the service will need to be double vaccinated against COVID-19 and show proof of the inoculation. “That’s a strict protocol we implemented to ensure we could be back fully this year,” program coordinator Elsa Poppleton said. Anyone who calls for a ride who isn’t double vaccinated will not be given a lift home. Dispatchers will ask the caller ahead of time if everyone entering the vehicle is double vaccinated. Hopefully, Poppleton said, everyone will be truthful.
6 - Christmas in Kamloops 2021 | Part 2
“If we do arrive to the house or party, you will be required to show the double vaccination and, if you don’t have it, then we’ll be calling a cab or giving you an alternate way to get home safely,” Poppleton said. Both drivers and passengers will be required to wear masks in the vehicle and cleaning guidelines will be in place, with dashboards and steering wheels sanitized every ride. No passengers will be allowed to ride shotgun and keeping the windows cracked open will be recommended for improved ventilation. Operation Red Nose’s remaining nights of service are Dec. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 30 and 31, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. In 2019, Operation Red Nose provided more than 1,200 rides in the city, the most in B.C. and 16thmost across the country. That year, the program had 235 volunteers as designated drivers, escort drivers, navigators, phone operators and dispatchers. To volunteer, visit the PacificSport
Interior BC website at pacificsport interiorbc.com/operationrednose or visit the Tournament Capital Centre, Kamloops Sports Council or Volunteer Kamloops to fill out a form. To book a ride home, call 250372-5110.

WILDLIGHTS RETURNS TO BC WILDLIFE PARK Almost one-million lights will shine for visitors from Dec. 10 to Jan. 3
A
fter cancelling Wildlights 2020 due to pandemicrelated event restrictions, the extremely popular event at the BC Wildlife Park in east Kamloops is back this year, presented by MJB Lawyers. The 24th annual event will run from Dec. 10 through Jan. 3, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with the exception of Christmas Day. There are almost one-million lights involved in the extravaganza and tickets can be purchased online at bcwildlife.org or at the door, The park is at 9077 Dallas Dr. There is a maximum of 1,000 online presale tickets available each night. Those with annual passes and memberships, should have their pass/membership number handy (located on the top left corner of the pass) to receive a discount. Those with annual passes or annual member tickets must bring valid photo ID, along with membership card for entry. Money raised via Wildlights is used to support the BC Wildlife Park through the winter, with funds generated covering the costs of an average monthly grocery bill of $10,000 and the costs of care for the nearly 200 permanent resident animals, the Fawcett Family Wildlife Health Centre patients and care for the burrowing owls in the famous breeding program. This year, organizers have added a new location memorable Christmas photos — a magical forest,

complete with Anna and Elsa (Dec. 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 26 and Jan 2), Belle and Cinderella (Dec. 15 and 29), and Ariel and Sleeping Beauty (Dec. 22),from Kamloops Princess Parties. Old favourites of Wildlights will also be featured, including the Canadian Tire Kamloops Holiday Gazebo, endless light displays, the 250-foot Tunnel of Lights, 10 cozy fire pits to warm up with hot chocolate and a 20-foot-tall outdoor light tree. Alas, Santa Claus has decided to stay home at the North Pole to ensure he remains healthy in order to be able to deliver Christmas presents to everyone on Christmas Eve. However, there is a special mailbox where kids can drop off letters to Santa. But you should hurry as the letters need to be dropped off by Dec. 10 so they can get to the North Pole in time. The popular Wildlife Express miniature train will be operating nightly from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Tickets are $1 each (cash only) and can be purchased at the train station. Masks are encouraged, though not mandatory, and can be purchased at the train station for $1 each As in years past, Uncle Chris the Clown will be on his stage near the splash park on most days (excluding Dec. 18, 23, 24 and 31). Proof of vaccination is not required to attend Wildlights, though masks must be worn inside buildings.

Showtimes vary through Dec. 11, with evening shows at 7:30 p.m. and matinees on Wednesday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 11. Tickets are $25 and available through the Kamloops Live Box Office, online at kamloopslive.ca or by phone at 250-374-5483. Christmas with the KSO will feature local soprano Rachel Casponi and guest conductor Cosette Justo Valdés. Tickets are $40 for adults or $15 for youths, available at the Kamloops Live Box Office. Don’t Sleep on this Beauty The Laughing Stock Theatre Society will present Sleeping Beauty — A Not So Maleficient Panto from Dec. 24 to Dec. 30 at Sagebrush Theatre, with matinees and evening shows on offer. Tickets are $25, less for children, youth and seniors, and available through the Kamloops Live Box Office, online at kamloopslive.ca or by phone at 250-3745483. Christmas on the silver screen Kamloops horror and comedy podcast Drunk in a Graveyard and the Kamloops Film Society are presenting a series of movies at the Paramount Theatre, downtown at Victoria Street and Fifth Avenue. Dec. 11 will feature a screening of Krampus, along with a live Krampus at the theatre, with whom photos can be taken by donation, proceeds of which will go to the Kamloops Film Society. Photos will take place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., with the film to follow at 6:30 p.m. Hailing from Germanic alpine tradition, Krampus is a sidekick of sorts to jolly Old Saint Nick. While Santa Claus brings presents to nice children, Krampus comes to punish the naughtier ones. Krampus is often depicted as a devilish character or a twisted version of Santa Claus. On Dec. 17, the 1974 Canadian horror movie Black Christmas will be screened at 6:30 p.m. The original flick is one of the scariest movies ever made and far superior to the recent remake. On Dec . 18, the classic holiday film Christmas Vacation will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Organizers will also be selling eggnog, singing songs and awarding prizes in the Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest. For tickets and other information, visit the Facebook pages of Drunk in a Graveyard or Kamloops Film Society.

HELP GROW THE KTW
CHRISTMAS FUND
The annual KTW fundraiser raises money for local non-profits
T
he KTW Christmas Cheer Fund helps to provide valuable financial support to a number of local non-profit organizations every year during the holiday season. This year, four charities will be helped by your donations: Y Women’s Emergency Shelter, Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association, Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism and Kamloops Brain Injury Association. New this year to the fund is its donation partner, the BC Interior Community Foundation. The fund has partnered with the BC Interior Community Foundation so more money can go to the charities. Receipts will be given for donations of $25 or more, with the foundation running the online donation portal, cutting cheques to the charities and writing tax receipts to the donors. Every year, Kamloops has embraced giving to the fund, from individuals to groups, it continues to grow each year. “The Christmas Cheer Fund is one of the most important things I think we do at Kamloops This Week every single year,” said Tim Shoults, operations manager of Aberdeen Publishing. “We tell the stories of the community all the time and we help other organizations raise funds, but this is where we are directly raising the funds for local charities and we get to put our money where our mouth is,” he said. “We get to put our readers’ money
16 - Christmas in Kamloops 2021 | Part 2
to great use in the community. It’s one of the things that makes me feel really, really good about being in community media. It’s something I’m so pleased has lasted through multiple papers over more than two decades.” For the BC Interior Community Foundation, the partnership with the KTW Christmas Cheer Fund is a great blend. “This, obviously, is the first time that we’ve played this role, so clearly we’re thrilled to be there and support not only KTW and its charitable endeavours, but to provide the community with a tax-receipting means of showing their donations and support,” said foundation executive director Rob Miller. The BC Interior Community Foundation began as the Kamloops Community Foundation in 1984 with a core group of volunteers and the City of Kamloops. By the early 2000s, part-time staff were brought in and a process began in 2015 to ensure the mandate of its regional scope, including its service area beyond Kamloops to include the ThompsonOkanagan and South Cariboo areas. To better reflect the nature of that broad, diverse service area, it recently re-branded to the BC Interior Community Foundation. “We’re the most significant charity you’ve never heard of,” Miller said. “Everybody knows what a hostel foundation does or a food bank does. Our mission statement is a bit more complex. We do grant dollars
to charitable organizations and sponsored non-for-profits. Sectors from health and environment, to youth and education, seniors, families, arts, culture — it’s all about championing community sustainability and community vitality.” Miller said the foundation likes to encourage the community to “give where you live” through the KTW Christmas Cheer campaign. Donations can be made directly online at www.kamloopsthisweek. com/community/cheer. Donations can also be brought to the newspaper’s office at 1365B Dalhousie Dr., which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each donor’s name and contribution is added to the list and will be published each week by KTW. The fund has already received its first donation as result of the VW Turtle Race in September, with more than $11,000 donated. “We get to tell the stories from great companies that give thousands of dollars at a time,” Shoults said, referencing as an example employees of Sureus Murphy of the Trans Mountain pipeline, which last year donated $12,000, their first-ever donation to Cheer and the largest single donation. Shoults also recognized the little kids who arrive at KTW with rolled coins as donations. “Every single one of those stories has great value,” he said. “It makes me feel great.”

How to create a durable
GINGERBREAD HOUSE
G
ingerbread cookies and houses are one of the many symbols of the holiday season, alongside Christmas trees and twinkling lights. In fact, few confections symbolize the holidays more so than gingerbread. Many a child (or a child at heart) has spent hours carefully trying to create decorative gingerbread houses. Although gingerbread recipes span various cultures, gingerbread houses originated in 16th century Germany. The fairy tale Hansel and Gretel helped solidify the popularity of gingerbread, which became part of Christmas traditions. Even though gingerbread houses can be fun to make, there’s no denying it can be exacting work — especially for those who strive for perfection. Prepackaged kits attempt to take some of the guesswork out of the equation, but those who are crafting from scratch can employ these tips as they build their gingerbread houses. • Go for form and not flavour. Few gingerbread houses ever get eaten, so focus on finding a dough that will bake up rock hard as opposed to one that tastes good. • Get the right icing texture. Pastry artist Catherine Beddall says royal icing is the preferred “glue” to adhere gingerbread pieces. Beddall says icing should be thick like
peanut butter and not runny. • Mind the dough. Do not roll out the gingerbread dough too thin or it may become brittle after being cooked. Always cut out shapes before the gingerbread is baked. Let the baked pieces sit overnight to cool completely before using them to build. • Patience is key. Allow the icing to dry for at least a couple of hours after adhering each piece and before moving and handling the house, says Beddall. Work in stages so individual items can be decorated and allowed to dry. Then the walls can be put together, followed by the roof pieces. • Kids likely will need help. Children may not have the patience or steadiness to handle complete gingerbread construction. They can decorate the separate pieces of the house while the components are laying flat, which is easier for kids. Adults can do the main assembly later on. • Utilize a template. Free-handing may not be easy. Cut out templates using cardboard or posterboard for various gingerbread pieces. One of the most important tips is to have fun. Don’t take gingerbread house making too seriously as a novice. Rather, enjoy the experience and the centuries-old tradition.
TURKEY TOSS FUNDRAISER RETURNS
T
he Mustard Seed’s second annual Turkey Toss fundraiser will be held on Dec. 10 at the Kamloops Alliance Church at 1 p.m. This year’s Turkey Toss event is presented by Save-On-Foods, 98.3 CIFM and the BC Turkey Farmers. “The holiday season is a very busy and challenging time for our clients and staff,” Mustard Seed managing director Kelly Thomson said. “Funds raised from the Turkey Toss will help provide our homeless community with the services they need to get them through the holiday season and beyond,” The Turkey Toss campaign kicked off with a six-day donation drive through Dec. 9 at all four Kamloops Save-OnFoods locations.
18 - Christmas in Kamloops 2021 | Part 2
Save-On-Foods’ shoppers have the opportunity to add a donation to their grocery bill, with each donation matched by Save-On-Foods and the BC Turkey Farmers, up to $4,000. For those wishing to donate turkeys for The Mustard Seed Kamloops’ Christmas dinner, the birds can be dropped off daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at The Mustard Seed’s outreach centre, downtown at 181 Victoria St W., prior to Dec. 17. “The BC Turkey Farmers are pleased to support The Mustard Seed Kamloops again this Christmas,” said Michel Benoit of the BC Turkey Farmers. “Every year, B.C. families celebrate festive occasions with a turkey as the
centrepiece of their family dinner. Thank you to The Mustard Seed and all the wonderful sponsors and donors that will help make Christmas a more joyous occasion in Kamloops.” There is room for 20 teams of three people who will each toss a fake turkey at multiple targets in an attempt to set the highest score and capture the coveted Turkey Toss Trophy. Contact Tyler Lowey by phone at 250.682.6544 or by email at tylerlowey@theseed.ca for information on space availability. To donate and for more information about the event, go online to TheSeed.ca/TurkeyToss.

EASY CHRISTMAS
MORNING BREAKFAST Christmas morning is an exciting and joyous time for families. Children are anxious to rush downstairs and see what Santa has left under the tree, while parents are eager to see the looks on youngsters’ happy faces. Having a fast and easy breakfast at the ready on Christmas morning allows families to jump right into the festivities, rather than spending too much time in the kitchen. This recipe for Spiced Yogurt Muffins can be made in advance, then enjoyed while peeking into Christmas stockings or watching holiday fare on television. This big-batch recipe is ideal for feeding a houseful of overnight holiday guests or it can be prepared in advance and doled out as needed throughout the week. The muffins also can be made as a treat for holiday office luncheons. Cut the recipe in half for smaller yields.
Spiced Yogurt Muffins
INGREDIENTS | YIELD: 50 SERVINGS 6 1⁄2 cups plain fat-free Greek yogurt 4 cups water, room temperature 1 box 2.2 kgs/5 lbs of whole grain 3 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice muffin mix 2 tablespoons chipotle cinnamon 350º F
17-24 m
Combine yogurt and water in mixing bowl. Whisk until blended. Set aside. Add spices to dry muffin mix in a large bowl. Add yogurt and water mixture to the muffin mixture. Mix until just blended. Don’t overmix. Using a scoop, portion into greased or lined muffin pans. Bake at 350 F for 24 min, or 17 to 20 min in a convection oven, until the tops are golden brown.
GIVE SOME THOUGHT TO GREAT HOMEMADE FOOD GIFTS
G
ifts from the heart are among the most coveted and appreciated come the holiday season. Hobbyists from all walks of life can turn their passions into handmade gifts, but few gifts may be as welcomed as those that can be eaten. Cooking and baking ramps up during the holiday season. People can turn extra time in the kitchen into opportunities to create festive treats that are ideal for gifting. But which items are the best of the best? Even though tastes are singular, these items will appeal to most foodies and others on your gift list.
Jams and preserves: Fruit jams and preserves are versatile foods. They are as at home on toast and biscuits as they are as fillings in cookies and tarts. Jams and preserves can be made with relatively few ingredients and work well with seasonal fruits.
Mini-bundt cakes: Fruit cakes may be a holiday standard, but bundt cakes also make for great and traditional offerings. Miniature bundts filled with chocolate chips, dried fruits or even those soaked in a favourite boozybutter glaze can be moist and delicious. Chocolate barks or fudges: Seasonal flavours can come to life in chocolate treats. White chocolate filled with peppermint pieces or dark chocolate and cherry chunks are tasty pairings. Break apart portions of the bark or cut the fudge with cookie cutters and gift inside cello bags tied with ribbons or in cardboard candy boxes.
