A wildfire northwest of Kamloops in the Lac du Bois area has now burned more than 195 hectares and is continuing to spread to the northwest, away from Kamloops city limits. It remains classified as out of control. An evacuation alert was put in place by the regional district on Monday, advising those in the Pass Lake, McQueen Lake and Isobel Lake areas that they may be ordered to evacuate.
The Watching Creek wildfire was discovered on Friday, July 29, following lightning in the area. It started about 15 kilometres from the edge of Kamloops. Ground crews took action on the fire over the weekend. As of Tuesday, the fire was being monitored from the air and ground crews, including heavy equipment, may once again engage the fire depending on its activity, according to fire information officer Melanie Bibeau. “We do have machinery in the area, but in terms of actioning the fire, it will be dependent on behaviour and access,” Bibeau said.
The fire has been designated a fire of note by the BC Wildfire Service and the agency has assigned an incident management team to oversee the fire, expected to take control on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a fire near the New Afton mine about seven kilometres west of Kamloops was brought under control on Monday. The fire was started by a vehicle blaze and Highway 1 between Kamloops and Tobiano was closed for a short while. As of Tuesday, the City of Kamloops has opened its emergency operations centre as a precautionary measure.

The City of Kamloops deactivated its cooling centre on Tuesday after a heat warning was rescinded. Last week, Environment Canada issued heat warnings across much of the province, including in the Kamloops area. Temperatures tipped toward 40 C before and into the B.C. Day long weekend. As a result, the city opened a cooling centre at Sandman Centre downtown. The cooling centre has closed for now as Environment Canada’s seven-day forecast calls for slight reprieve in the coming days. A cooling trend is expected on Wednesday, with the forecast calling for showers and a high of 25 and a low of 17. Thursday should bring more showers and a high of only 20 and a low 14. But temperatures are expected to increase again on the weekend, with sunshine and highs/lows of 26/13 on Friday, 31/15 on Saturday, 34/15 on Sunday and 35/15 on Monday predicted.

Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Kúkpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir is among 14 people who will be appointed to the Order of British Columbia, the provincial government announced on Monday. The Order of B.C. is the province’s highest form of recognition. The Order of B.C. investiture ceremony for 2022 recipients and invited guests is tentatively scheduled to be held at Government House in Victoria in the late fall. “I share these congratulations with gratitude to these incredible individuals who have done so much to enrich their communities,” said Janet Austin, lieutenant governor of British Columbia and chancellor of the Order of British Columbia, in a statement. “Their leadership and generous service has enhanced the lives of so many British Columbians and has contributed to shaping a better future for all residents of our province.” The independent advisory council noted Casimir has led
Tk’emlúps through the discovery in May 2021 of 200 probable unmarked graves on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. It also noted Casimir has been a strong advocate for justice, reconciliation and healing for First
Nations and has worked with council to help keep those issues on the national and provincial agendas. Casimir recently represented B.C. as a delegate to the Vatican to discuss the church’s role in the operation of residential schools.

She met directly with Pope Francis to share the experiences of survivors. At the end of the visit, the pope issued an apology, something he repeated during his recent visit to Canada. Casimir is the 14th elected Kúkpi7 for Tk’emlúps. She is also tribal chief of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council and a member on the board of directors for the BC Assembly of First Nations. Recent awards Casimir has received are the Canadian Public Relations Society President’s Award for Outstanding Public Relations and Communications and the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. This year, 194 British Columbians were nominated. Since its inception in 1989, 489
British Columbians have been appointed to the Order of B.C. Members have been appointed from all parts of the province and in numbers proportionate to a region’s population. Joining Casimir in being appointed to the Order of B.C. are: • Dr. Nadine Rena Caron of Prince George; • Khosrowshahi of Vancouver; • Kathy Kinloch of Surrey; • Joy MacPhail, CM, of Vancouver; • Fred Ting Shek Mah of Vancouver; • Harinder Mahil of Coquitlam • Maureen Maloney, QC, of Victoria; • Geoff Plant, QC, of Vancouver; • Christine Sinclair, OC, of Portland, Ore.; • Paul Spong of Alert Bay; • Gerald St. Germain, PC, of Langley; • Jody Wilson-Raybould, PC, QC, of Quathiaski Cove; • Bruce Munro Wright of Vancouver. A campfire ban is coming to the Kamloops Fire Centre. Effective noon on Thursday, Aug. 4, campfires will be prohibited to help prevent human-caused wildfires. The campfire prohibition will remain in effect until noon on Oct. 15 or until the order is rescinded. Last year, the ban began on June 30, while there were no campfire bans in the summers of 2020 or 2019. A lightning storm overnight from July 28 to July 29, coupled with an intense heat wave, has led to a number of wildfires being sparked in the B.C. Interior. The Kamloops Fire Centre’s fire danger ratings are generally “high” or “extreme.” Other open burning was previously banned. As of noon on Thursday, the following activities are prohibited: • Campfires as defined in the Wildfire Regulation; • Category 2 open fire as defined in the Wildfire Regulation; • Category 3 open fire as defined in the Wildfire Regulation; • Fireworks; • Sky Lanterns; • Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description; • Binary Exploding Targets; • Tiki and similar kind of torches;

Paying tribute to Darwin’s true heir
J
im Lovelock was a late bloomer. His first book, Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth, was published in 1979, when he was already 60 years old. By the time he died on July 28, on his 103rd birthday, he had written 10 more books on Gaia, the hypothesis that has evolved into the key academic discipline of Earth system science. That gives him a strong claim to be Charles Darwin’s legitimate heir. Just as Darwin’s 19th-century theory of evolution shaped our understanding of how life became so diverse, our understanding of the present is shaped by Lovelock’s idea that the millions of living species function as a self-regulating mechanism that keeps the planet cool enough for abundant life. The puzzle that started Lovelock down that road was the fact the Sun’s radiation has increased by 30 per cent since life appeared on Earth 3.7-billion years ago, while the planet’s average temperature, despite occasional huge surges up or down, has consistently returned to the narrow range most suitable for life. What was making that happen? Collaborating with American biologist Lynn Margulis in the 1970s, Lovelock worked out a tentative description of the superorganism he named Gaia and wrote his first book. Most scientists treated it with disdain because he was not a biologist, but also because Gaia had new age connotations of which

WATCH Lovelock was unaware. He was definitely not a hippie. By 1988, however, the scientific world was starting to take the theory seriously. In 2001, a special congress of more than 1,000 physicists, biologists and climate scientists declared the planet “behaves as a single self-regulating system comprised of physical, chemical, biological and human components.” Gaia (under the more dignified name of Earth system science) had achieved the status of scientific orthodoxy. Meanwhile, Lovelock had been accorded the status of honorary environmental saint by the Greens, although he regarded most of their priorities as mere distractions and some, like their hostility to nuclear power, as potentially lethal blunders. Lovelock’s blunt predictions of global climate disaster were once seen as exaggerated, but he understood what was really happening. In his first book, in 1979, he

gave a warning that I can still quote verbatim 43 years later. “The larger the proportion of the Earth’s biomass occupied by mankind and the animals and crops required to nourish us, the more involved we become in the transfer of solar and other energy throughout the entire system ... We shall have to tread carefully to avoid the cybernetic disasters of runaway positive feedback or of sustained oscillation ...” “If man had encroached on Gaia’s functional powers to such an extent that he had disabled her, he would then wake up one day to find that he had the permanent lifelong job of planetary maintenance engineer ... and the ceaseless intricate task of keeping all the global cycles in balance would be ours. “Then at last we should be riding that strange contraption, ‘the spaceship Earth’, and whatever
tamed and domesticated biosphere remained would indeed be our life support system. We would face the final choice of permanent enslavement on the prison hulk of the spaceship Earth or gigadeath to enable the survivors to restore a Gaian world.” Apocalyptic but accurate, yet he never despaired. I didn’t meet Lovelock for the first time until 20 years after that book came out, but every time I went down to Devon to see him, his natural cheerfulness kept breaking through his professional pessimism. Eventually, I asked him about it. He replied: “Why do I oscillate between being cheerful and being pessimistic? My role, really, my main job, is being a prophet and it’s the only way you can make prophecy. You have to build up scenarios in your mind. It could
go this way or it could go that way and only then can you get a more balanced picture of what the future might be like,” he said. “Earth’s behaviour itself is uncertain enough, but people’s behaviour is the biggest uncertainty of all. I mean, we might be on course for curing all these problems and then some stupid, silly war or a pandemic breaks out and it takes all our minds away from it. We’re the joker in the pack.” We are not on course for curing all these problems, of course. We’re far off course, as Lovelock well knew, but he has given us the vital context of a self-regulating Gaian system. Without that, we wouldn’t even know where to start trying to mend the damage we have done. He was also a brilliant inventor. His electron capture detector confirmed the existence of the ozone hole and made him financially independent. He had a side hustle as a reallife Q, a gadget-maker for MI5. But above all, he was a warm, gentle man with an impish sense of humour. It was a privilege to know him. Gwynne Dyer’s next book, Intervention Earth, will be published in 2023. It addresses the probable need for geo-engineering to cope with the climate crisis.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
SPEAKING FOR THE TREES OF THE CITY
While many people flocked to the river to beat the heat, Kamloops This Week reader Marc Lapointe is trying to stay cool at home, to no avail.
YOU THINK YOU’RE HOT? Editor: Do you think it’s hot? Try living in a rental unit designed for central air conditioning. We have two windows, in the bedroom and kitchen, and no screen doors. The central air conditioning has been broken for three weeks and is expected to be fixed or replaced in mid-September. The owner sold the house
four weeks ago and we have until Aug. 31 to leave, with nothing affordable in Kamloops. We have not received from the rental agency any discount in rent or even a temporary fix to combat the heat as the internal temperature, with three fans running around the clock, reaches over 32 C. Most people are generous in telling us to “stay cool!” Marc Lapointe, Kamloops
Editor: The duplex lot at the corner of Schubert Drive and Kent Avenue has been sold to a single owner. I believe subdivision plans are being considered. I walk by that lot almost every day. Rooted far longer than the buildings that will rise there is a huge maple tree. Backed up against the Halston Bridge, it has absorbed and mitigated decades of invasive vibrations and noise. Through it all, it has never ceased in providing oxygen and shade and has stood as a beautiful green wind block for our neighbourhood. I believe the community will be harmed by its removal and I ask that steps be taken to protect it.
RCMP GOT THE GOODS
The City of Kamloops website states the municipality has a “goal of increasing our community’s tree canopy to 20 per cent from the current 15 per cent.” This tree is substantial — and part of that 15 per cent. Three of me could not join hands around the tree’s trunk. The volume of the canopy, which shields our neighbourhood from the noise of Halston traffic, would not be replaced by other trees for decades. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, “shaded surfaces may be 11 C to 25 C cooler than the peak temperatures of unshaded materials. Evapotranspiration, alone or in combination with shading, can help reduce peak summer temperatures by 1 C to 5 C.”
Editor: I would like to give a word of thanks to the two Kamloops RCMP members who recovered my stolen ATV and trailer early on the morning of June 21. Just over an hour after it was stolen from my back-
yard, police called to say they found both the ATV and trailer. Mounties far too often do not receive the recognition they deserve for the work they do. Thanks again. Gordon Wiens Kamloops

Are you satisfied with Pope Francis’ apology to Canada’s Indigenous peoples?
I ask that the city create a stronger tree bylaw to protect such trees from development throughout Kamloops. Such a bylaw should include a requirement for public consultation before consideration of a tree cutting permit. It should also include an inventory of trees of this nature, beginning with the urban tree tour. The bylaw needs to be expanded to include trees we love — on private and public land, whether owned by us, others or the city. Asking children to tell us of the trees they love will promote engagement, help them notice the nature that surrounds them and build their ability to affect their world in a good way. KTW story leads to rental help for pensioner MICHAEL POTESTIO
STAFF REPORTER
michael@kamloopsthisweek.com
A Kamloops senior spending the majority of her pension on rent is now facing the prospect of having the bill cut in half thanks to KTW readers. In a story on the rental crisis in the July 27 edition of this newspaper, KTW spoke with a 67-year-old woman named Shirley who was struggling to find affordable housing in Kamloops. She said she is paying $2,200 of her $2,500 per month pension in rent at the Country View Motor Inn. Shirley told KTW it has been difficult to purchase groceries and medication with the few hundred dollars she has left each month and felt the motel room isn’t worth $2,200, but felt forced to spend the money or risk ending up homeless.
Shirley said she was told by the ASK Wellness Society the rent was so high due to a lack of housing inventory in town. Shirley said she was evicted in January from an apartment unit in Sagebrush, where she was paying $1,058 per month in rent, and was connected by ASK Wellness with her current two-bed hotel room. She described the living conditions at Country View Motor Inn as “squalor at incredible prices. To me this whole thing is a nightmare,” she told KTW. Oncore Seniors Society executive director Jim Douglas said he is prepared to offer her a handicap-accessible studio apartment unit for $1,200 a month in the non-profit’s recently purchased Silvercrest Suites at 154 Vernon Ave., which is located across from Northills Centre in North Kamloops. The five-storey, 53-unit Silvercrest Suites was purchased by Oncore this past spring with the help of a $10.1-million grant
through BC Housing and a $830,000 federal government contribution. Douglas said he read about Shirley in KTW, noting a couple of board members also sent him the article. Douglas said the fact Shirley was evicted from her former apartment and has about 90 per cent of her pension tied to rent is what compelled him to reach out to help. “I’m sure there are lots of Shirleys in our community,” Douglas said, noting Shirley’s $2,500 per month pension is not large, but it would be if rents were in the $800 range, as they were years ago. “Seems to me the marketplace economics are out of kilter right now. The ravages of the marketplace are hurting people in our society,” Douglas said. When KTW contacted Shirley with news about Oncore’s offer, she described it as a “miracle.” “I think that’s wonderful and I don’t even have to see it,” Shirley said. “I’ll take it.”
The July 27 edition of Kamloops This Week featured a story on the rental market crisis in Kamloops. Among those interviewed was Shirley, a senior living on a $2,500 per month pension, $2,200 of which went to rent a motel room she called “squalor at incredible prices.”

SERVING KAMLOOPS & AREA SINCE 1972
Florian Lazar was on vacation when he learned over social media he may be kicked out of his home in a few months. “It was very stressful,” the father of three told KTW, noting his children worried their family will be homeless. Lazar and about a dozen other residents of Pineview Heights townhouse complex gathered at Pineview Park in late July to discuss their legal recourse with two members of the Thompson Rivers University Community Legal Clinic (TRU CLC) in the wake of receiving so-called renoviction notices from their landlord, Fraserview Development Corporation. Residents met with clinic representatives Kelly Melnyk and third-year law student Thomas Deneka on July 21 about how to mount a defence against the landlord’s application for eviction — a case the clinic is taking on pro bono. Up to 42 families, many with school-aged children, in the complex at 1920 Hugh Allan Dr. in Pineview Valley received the letter from Fraserview Development Corporation on June 24, informing them of the pending evictions due to numerous planned refurbishments. The letters were dated April 27. An Oct. 3 Residential Tenancy Board (RTB) hearing with an arbitrator will decide if the work cited requires residents to vacate their homes. If the arbitrator determines the work would require the tenants moving out permanently, the RTB will then give Fraserview an order of possession, which gives tenants four months’ notice, with the last month’s rent paid for by Fraserview. In 2021, the provincial government changed legislation to protect residents from being victims of renovictions by requiring landlords to apply to the RTB for pre-approval before ending a tenancy.
Melnyk told tenants at the park the clinic is behind the file “100 per cent” and said legal representatives would provide a list of items residents could submit them to formulate a response package for the RTB hearing. If the landlord’s RTB application is successful, but doesn’t go through with the proposed renovations, tenants could apply to be compensated a year’s rent, Melnyk told the residents, but they would not be entitled to move back into their homes at current rental rates. MEETING LEAVES LITTLE ASSURANCE FOR TENANTS Following the meeting, some residents told KTW they left feeling no more secure or less frustrated than before. A tenant named Carolina, who did not wish to give her last name, said she was hoping for a sense of certainty from the meeting, but left feeling the same level of frustration. “They all say we need to fight and we’re going to do it … but they cannot give us any certainty,” Carolina said. The international student from Columbia has lived in Kamloops for 18 months and said her children, upon learning of the eviction notice, thought they did something wrong. Another tenant named Alina, who did not wish to have her last name published, said her kids expressed similar sentiments and want to know their parents’ plan. “We don’t know what to tell them because we don’t have something,” Alina said. She told KTW even if tenants end up winning their case with the RTB, the next few months leading up to the hearing with possible eviction hanging over their heads is going to be “a nightmare.” “The stress, the family, the kids, it’s just abhorrent,” Alina said. She said her rent is $1,850 at Pineview Heights and she cannot afford an increase. After hearing from the clinic, Pineview Heights resident
Kevin O’Neil said it’s good to have people on their side. “I felt that we could come together,” O’Neil said of the meeting. “Our kids are all really close and it’s a community.” He said his family was kicked out of his last rental when it was sold and, a year later, he is faced with a similar scenario again. “It’s been a rough couple years,” O’Neil said. TRU LEGAL CLINIC LOOKING INTO DEFENCE Lazar said he was hoping there would have been more people in attendance for the meeting, while resident Erin Sims said she plans to go door-to-door to get neighbours to sign up for the defence. “I’m kind of keeping an eye out on available rentals, but I also don’t want to move if I don’t have to,” Sims said of her current situation. Melnyk told KTW on Tuesday that the clinic is looking at ways of assisting Pineview Heights tenants, but nothing has yet been finalized. She said both parties will get the opportunity to have their evidence heard. It will be up to the arbitrator to decide whose position is more credible. The legal clinic reached out to KTW to be put in contact with residents upon reading a story in the June 29 edition of this newspaper. Fraserview director Curtis Schlosser previously told KTW the renovations he has planned will be done one unit at a time and are such that residents won’t be able to reside in the homes during the work. If Fraserview’s RTB application is successful, tenants will be evicted from their homes permanently as a result of the renovations, but will have first right of refusal to move back into their homes at what will be higher rents. While provincial legislation caps annual rent increases at 1.5 per cent in 2022, once a unit is vacant, the rent can be set at any price.

THIRD PARTY ADVERTISING LIMITS In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2022 general local elections, the following third party advertising limits apply:
A rainstorm last week sent mud barrelling downhill from a construction zone and into the backyard of a Juniper Ridge home. Paul Vanderhoek owns a rental property at 1763 Galore Pl. in Juniper West, but lives in Abbotsford. He said the rainstorm, which occurred as most people slept overnight between July 28 and July 29, led to the backyard being filled with mud. Cleanup was underway on July 29. “It’s a bloody mess,” Vanderhoek told KTW. Vanderhoek said Juniper West is currently developing residential lots above his home. He said he spent $30,000 to protect sloping on his property and questioned tree removal in the construction zone, which he believes contributed to the mudslide.
Vanderhoek does not know cost of the damage. However, he said the yard is “completely ruined.” He is talking to his insurance company. Vanderhoek said he heard from the developer, Juniper West Developments, which told him people were looking into the matter. “I would like to see my yard restored to how it was and I would like some assurances that measures will be taken that this doesn’t happen again or every time there’s a rainstorm,” he said. He said the city is allowing development to occur, but argued it is not doing enough to protect people below. Vanderhoek is not aware of other properties impacted. Some Valleyview residents, meanwhile, reported mud flowing down from the hills between Juniper and Valleyview, in the area of recent reservoir work.
City crews apparently swept streets on July 29, but private landowners were responsible for cleaning up their properties. The city’s civic operations director, Jen Fretz, said she did not believe the Juniper mudslide involved city property. “When there’s a landslide from private property to private property, we don’t get involved in the particulars of that landslide, but we do go out and make sure that this is not a bigger widespread issue that would affect a) more people, but also b) city infrastructure,” she said. The city’s engineering development supervisor, Jason Dixon, said the developer has a preliminary layout approval letter, which allowed work to start on the subdivision, noting a berm was on the development site to capture runoff. Berm, ditch were overwhelmed with water From A14
However, Dixon added, that berm was “overwhelmed” by the volume of water caused by the intense rainstorm. He said when a subdivision was created for 1763 Galore Pl., the city required the developer to install a cutoff ditch (a shallow ditch along the hillside) to protect properties from rapid snowmelt, but it, too, was also overwhelmed. Dixon said the city provides oversight to
ensure a developer’s engineers are onsite, but noted the city does not direct work. A geotechnical engineer is required to assess soil, cut slopes and more for any development of this scope. Work underway includes extending Coldwater Drive, with single-family homes to eventually be constructed. “We rely on the developer’s engineering team, both the geotechnical and civil engineers, to monitor that work,” he said. Dixon said the developer’s contractor

This year will mark the 10th annual event, returning from the pandemic in full force, along with the Hot Nite in the City car show, the dragon boat festival and, of course, a variety of barbecue temptations from six vendors. Ribbers attending this year’s event include Boss Hog’s, Gator BBQ, House of Q, Grizzly BBQ, Prairie Smoke and Spice and Smoke Dem Bones BBQ. Sustainability is also on organizers’ minds and the event will be a zero-waste undertaking, with materials being upcycled, recycled or composted. Spokesperson Bryce Herman said the goal is to cre-
ate the first zero-waste event in the city. “We’re pretty excited and we think we can achieve it,” Herman said, noting work already done by the sustainability team. He said vendors were asked to provide compostable and recyclable materials this year, with everything that comes in and out of the park being sustainable in some way. Ribfest will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day from Friday, Aug. 5, to Sunday, Aug. 7. The layout has changed slightly this year, Herman said, due to construction underway within the park. Herman said the changes, however, are for the better. “It means the beverage garden is going to be larger and it’s going to be right in front of the main stage,” he said. The main stage will host entertainment throughout the event, with daily entertain-
ment from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Artists include three tribute bands honouring popular and classic acts, including Reckless (a Bryan Adams tribute) on Friday, OC/DC (AC/ DC tribute) on Saturday and Fleetwood Magic (Fleetwood Mac tribute) on Sunday. Tribute bands will take to the stage at 8 p.m. Special transportation considerations have also been made this year for Ribfest. The City of Kamloops has made transit free for the weekend and a bicycle valet will be operated by District Bicycle, with security onsite and overnight storage available. Ribfest is held to raise money for various Kamloops organizations, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to various causes. Since 2012, Ribfest has helped numerous groups, including Literacy Kamloops, BGC Kamloops, Power Start Breakfast Program and the Kamloops Food Bank.

arrest after pleading guilty to child luring. The man, who is in his early 50s, cannot be named due to a court-ordered publication ban protecting the identity of his two underage victims. He was handed the sentence in Kamloops provincial court on July 28 by Judge Raymond Phillips, who accepted a joint submission on sentencing from Crown prosecutor Katie Bouchard and defence lawyer Jeremy Jensen. In an agreed statement of facts, court heard the two youths, who were high school students at the time of the offences, had each tried out in person, at separate times, for the sports team helmed by the accused. He told each girl to contact him via private social media message to discuss fee payment and other team-related items. Both did so. Between January 2018 and January 2019, the now former coach contacted one of the girls online several times, requesting she send him photos of herself of a sexual nature, court heard. The girl, who was between 16 and 17 years old at the time, believes she may have sent him a photo of her breasts covered by a bra, Bouchard said. “However, the accused asserts, and the Crown does not dispute, that he has no memory of any photos being exchanged,” Bouchard said. In March of 2020, the accused asked the other girl, who was 17 at the time, to send him photos of a sexual nature of herself, but she refused, told him his request made her feel uncomfortable and reported the incident the next day to police. Both incidents were reported in March of 2020 and the accused was arrested that October, Bouchard said. The former coach ended up pleading guilty this past January to one count of internet luring of a child under the age of 18.
The plea involved the two complainants. Phillips noted the accused has no prior criminal record and accepted he feels genuine remorse for what he did. Court heard the man’s guilty plea was a mitigating factor in sentencing, which spared the two victims the stress of having to testify. An aggravating factor was his position as a coach. Phillips said the man’s conduct was a breach of trust as he was the organizer of the sports team the youth were trying to join. “This is the kind of behaviour we see all too often in youth sports and it’s something that has to be condemned,” Phillips said. “Youth are vulnerable, not only because of their age, but because of their desire and need to be part of a team and to belong.” Court heard the man lost his job and pension following his arrest. He is no longer coaching youth sports. “He is a contributing member of this community, he has been for a long time, and this is quite a fall from grace,” Phillips said. Bouchard and Jensen made a joint submission on sentencing for six months’ house arrest — four of those months requiring the former coach to remain in his home 24 hours a day, except for work and errands, followed by two months under a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. That will be followed by 12 months of probation. During his sentence, he will be under conditions that include he have no contact with the two victims and not to engage in employment or volunteer work bringing him in contact with those under the age of 18. Before the sentencing, the accused was interviewed by a forensic psychologist, whose report found the man posed a low risk to reoffend. As a result, he was not asked to engage in any counselling conditions.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
The BC Day long weekend was a scorcher, with a lengthy heat wave bringing in temperatures in the high 30s. As such, the Thompson rivers drew plenty of people and their furry friends as cooling down in the water was a popular activity. Drowning in Thompson River on weekend KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
A man is missing and presumed drowned after being caught in the current of the Thompson River at McArthur Island. Kamloops RCMP received the report at about 5:30 p.m. this past Saturday. Staff Sgt. Kelly Butler said witnesses told police the man was swept away by the current and did not resurface. “Civilians attempted to assist, but were unable to reach him and several boats in the area also responded, but were also unable to locate the male,” Butler said. An extensive search was conducted by Kamloops Fire and Rescue and the RCMP. Butler said the victim is from out of town and she believes Vernon is his hometown. The tragic incident occurred during a soccer tournament on McArthur Island. While police did not elaborate on why the man was in the river, social media posts referenced an incident in which a man tried to save a boy who had fallen into the river. KTW will have updates on this story as they become available.
Bus brouhaha leads to arrest of Langley man KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
A man from Langley could be facing charges after allegedly causing a disturbance on a Kamloops bus. On July 26 at about 1 p.m., Kamloops Mounties responded to the 1200-block of Summit Drive in Sahali, where a man was threatening someone and damaging a transit bus. Police arrived to find a bystander holding the suspect down. Officers arrested him, taking the suspect to the downtown detachment cells to sober up and calm down before releasing him with a court date. “Throughout his interaction with police, the suspect made threats directed at all police in general and continuously shouted racist comments at one of the responding officers,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in a release. Charges are pending.’ Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2022-25864.

Probes of spring deaths continue MICHAEL POTESTIO
STAFF REPORTER
michael@kamloopsthisweek.com
Kamloops Mounties continue to probe a pair of deaths from this past spring that remain a mystery. While one does not appear to have involved a crime, it appears foul play has yet to be ruled out in the other. The circumstances surrounding the death of Kamloops resident David Bosanac, 22, remain unknown to police, who continue to investigate the file months following his death.
On March 26, a bone belonging to Bosanac was found along a walking trail near Kamloops Airport, but police at the time did not know to whom it belonged. Mounties have said they will not disclose which bone was found in order to protect the investigation. Bosanac was last heard from on Feb. 25 and reported missing by family to police on March 18. He had not been in contact with family for weeks. Police did not seek public help in finding Bosanac for another nine days, when they
issued a press release on March 27, seeking assistance in locating him. However, by then his remains had already, unknowingly, been discovered a day earlier by a person walking their dog along Aviation Way near the loop section of the Airport Trail. Police soon determined the bone was human and, in May, it was confirmed to belong to Bosanac. Anyone with information that can help police better determine a timeline on Bosanac’s final days is asked to contact
Kamloops RCMP at 250-8283000. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate an unrelated death involving a body that was found in the Thompson River, along the shore of Mission Flats, on April 25. Mounties have identified the deceased as being a Kamloops man in his 20s and do not suspect criminality was involved in his death. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting its own concurrent investigation into the circumstances related to the man’s death.

Co-suffering culture (part 3): Powerlessness
I
n previous columns, I began to explore the fundamental principles of building a new culture based not on violent acquisition of power at the expense of others, but on the common experience of the human suffering, which unites us to each other, forming the basis for a society in which we can be restored to our true humanity. A “co-suffering culture” may sound rather gloomy, but only if you think of suffering as meaning nothing more than pain. In reality, suffering has a larger denotation. It is being subject to things beyond our control. Understood in this sense, suffering is integral part of being human because as human beings, we are subject to (at the very least) the four dimensions of time and space. I could be enjoying a bowl of ice cream on a sunny day, with not a care in the world, and still be suffering, simply because even when I am blissfully happy, I cannot prevent the clock from ticking or the world from turning. Suffering, then, is not just about pain or misery. It is a condition of our existence. But it is not a condition that we like very much. Indeed, it might be said the whole of the Western secular enterprise rests on a belief we can and should escape from suffering through human ingenuity. What is the impetus for modern science and technology except the impulse to free us from nature’s control through greater knowledge? What is the sign of a healthy economy but “growth,” by which we mean the increased power of consumers over their spending limits? What drives politics except the acquisition of power to control the destinies of nations? What motivates social, religious, and others trends but our endless quest for self-determination? Our society’s most precious, if unspoken, ideal is that if we can just learn enough, get rich enough,
RICHARD RENE You Gotta Have
FAITH
healthy enough, powerful enough or just happy enough, then all poverty and suffering will cease. We will finally be free. We may even reach the point where we do not need to die. I am not here to argue with those who passionately uphold this belief. I will say that the arrogant compulsion of scientists and technocrats to discover at all costs, of market economies to grow and prosper at all costs and of the individuals and nations to “get happy” at the cost of other individuals and nations, are even now tearing our world apart. Glorious as the secular humanist vision may be, I am not sure the world will survive long enough to see it fulfilled. A culture of co-suffering offers a radical alternative. It begins with a conscious acceptance that suffering is an inescapable fact of life and that there will always be realities beyond our control. This decision — which 12-Step programs call “an admission of powerlessness” — is a profound act that initiates a genuine faith in God and fundamentally reorients the ways in which we choose to live our lives. Consider how our spending choices might change if we collectively refused to buy into the commercial deceit that this or that product will enable us to escape the unsatisfactory lives we now live and attain a “better” destiny.
We might well see the end of growth-based market economies and the beginning of something else. What else, you might wonder? How about a steady state economy that organizes its activities based on sustainability and ecological responsibility? Consider what might happen if science and technology were no longer driven by the impulse to improve on the human race, regardless of the expense. We might well see a considerable slowing of our breakneck development in many fields, but really, would that be such a tragedy? If Bach composed and Michelangelo painted in a society afflicted with the plague, without electricity and running water, would it be so terrible if we were deprived of yet another version of the iPad? These are just two implications of the choice to accept personal powerlessness. Rather than asking ourselves, “What else is there to get or become?” and then pursuing our answers at the expense of others and our world as a whole, a culture of co-suffering challenges us to pray what you might know as the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” On the basis of this personal commitment, we can take the next step in implementing a truly compassionate culture.

Defence stout in Broncos’ loss The Kamloops Broncos dropped a 14-7 decision to the visiting Vancouver Island Raiders of Nanaimo on Saturday night (July 30) at Hillside Stadium. The loss leaves the Broncos at 0-1 on the season, while the Raiders improve to 1-1. Kamloops was the lone BC Football Conference team to have a bye in the first week as the league has expanded to seven teams with the addition of the Prince George Kodiaks. The teams were tied 7-7 at the half, with Vancouver Island pulling away with a fourth quarter touchdown. Kamloops was hampered by penalties — 18 for 129 yards — including a holding call that negated a touchdown that may have changed the game’s fortunes. Broncos’ quarterback Reid Vankoughnett was 10 for 24, with 145 passing yards and one interception. Vankoughnett rushed for 11 yards, including the club’s lone touchdown. Christopher Finden also rushed for 11 yards, while Colton Meikle led the way in receiving, with three catches for 49 yards. The Kamloops defence was stout, with Maurice Onyeamenu recording 10 tackles, followed by Peter Orajekwe (7) and Logan Ritchie Keegan Curtis (4). Ritchie and Jack Bellefontaine also had interceptions. In special teams, Thomas
Jeeves punted the ball eight times for 285 yards, while Kaleb Senz had two kick returns for 94 yards. Vancouver Island scoring came from quarterback Ben Chomolok, who ran the ball into the end zone, and Andrew Gordon, who was targeted by Chomolok through the air. In other Week 2 action, the Westshore Rebels of Greater Victoria remained undefeated with a 38-17 win over visiting Valley Huskers of Chilliwack and the Okanagan Sun also remained perfect with a 20-7 win over the Rams in Langley. The Broncos are on the road for the next two weekends and fans can watch those games on TV. Kamloops visits Prince George on Saturday, Aug. 6, for a 7 p.m. game at Masich Place Stadium. The club then visits Nanaimo on Saturday, Aug. 13, for a 5:30 p.m. contest against the Raiders at Nanaimo District secondary. Both of those games can be watched by Telus subscribers on channel 1999.
Clockwise from top: Kamloops Broncos’ quarterback Reid Vankoughnett fires a pass; Jack Bellafontaine sneaks under the tackles and squirts out of the pile for a good kickoff return; Maurice Onyeamenu is congratulated by a coach for a turnover recovery; the Broncos’ offensive line surges on a running play. The Kamloops Long Blades Speed Skating Club has won the Intact Insurance Club Excellence Award. The club will receive a $10,000 grand prize to support a grassroots development project that aims to welcome new Canadians to the Long Blades and become part of the community through sport. The club will also receive a visit from a pair of National Team athletes during the 2022-2023 season. Four other speed skating clubs in B.C., Ontario and Quebec were named finalists for the annual award and will each take home a $2,500 cash prize to help finance their respective initiatives.
Sponsored by Speed Skating Canada’s longstanding partner, Intact Insurance, the Club Excellence Award distributes $20,000 in grants each season to local speed skating clubs undertaking grassroots development initiatives that help the sport grow and thrive within their community. The award recognizes the contributions of local speed skating clubs to sport and community development and the importance of grassroots programs to high performance success. Dozens of clubs from across the country submitted project ideas, including diversity and inclusion programming, the purchase of new safety mats or skating equipment and open house initiatives that increase
awareness of the sport. The Long Blades will use the Club Excellence Award grand prize to further develop its SWIFT (Speed Skating with International Friends Together) program, run in collaboration with the Kamloops-Cariboo Regional Immigrant Services. The program looks to bring new Canadians to the rink and teach them how to speed skate. The goal of the program is to welcome new Canadians to the club and create opportunities for kids and their families to make new friends and become part of the community through sport. Rivers FC live wire Josh Banton can electrify from the back, a defender whose pace, guile and skill has jumped off the pitch since he arrived in Canada in 2017. He came to the Great White North to play for the TRU WolfPack and, after five years in the country, has no plans to leave. “I’ve always wanted to stay since I first got here,” said Banton, who aims to graduate next year from TRU with a psychology degree. “I knew that since Day 1. The only reason I’d leave is the opportunity to play abroad, but I don’t plan on going back to England. “John [Antulov] has been monumental in my decision to stay. His character and influence is second to none. I like the pace of the country, the people here, how the landscape looks. I loved it instantly, everything about it.” Banton, from London, England, has proven to be an astute piece of recruiting work by Antulov, head coach for both the Pack and RFC. “He just has the speed, the size, the technical ability, leadership
which could include toiling in the Canadian Premier League or perhaps abroad. Through July , his focus was on helping Rivers finish strong. “Rivers, as a whole, has been a very good experience for us,” Banton said. “We’ve let everyone know that even though the results haven’t gone our way, we’re no little fish. We’re here to battle.” qualities, just everything,” said Antulov, noting Banton is among his top-four recruits since taking over the head coaching reins at TRU. “He’s a physical specimen, as far as athleticism goes, one of the fastest players I’ve ever had. Defensively, an excellent one-Vone defender, and solid in the air.” Banton was a key cog on the WolfPack club that won bronze on home soil at the 2017 U Sports Men’s Soccer Championship and was among expansion Rivers’ leaders and top players during the inaugual Leage1 BC season, which wrapped up this past Monday
with title tilts at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. The fullback’s TRU career will culminate this year in a second shot at national glory, with the Pack playing host this fall to the men’s Canadian championship in Banton’s graduating campaign. “The boys are talking about it,” Banton said, noting about 90 per cent of the Rivers FC men’s roster will toil for the Pack this year. “The boys are ready. That experience of playing games together through the summer is really key for us and an advantage for us.” Banton plans to sit down with Antulov to discuss the future,

Kamloops hoping to land provincial 55+ Games KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
While the City of Kamloops prepares to host this month’s Canada 55+ Games, the Tournament Capital is already angling to bring the provincial equivalent event to town within a few years. The 2022 Canada 55+ Games will take place in Kamloops from Aug. 23 through Aug. 26. The national event, which is being held in B.C. for the first time since it was created in 1996, will feature 26 competitions and more than 2.500 participants.
Organizers say the Games are expected to inject about $3 million into the Kamloops economy, a financial boost that includes more than 1,000 hotel rooms being booked. While plans for that event proceed, the city has also submitted a bid to host the BC 55-Plus Games in either 2025 or 2026. The city submitted its bid to the BC Seniors Games to host the event, offering a $60,000 cash contribution and in-kind support of services and facilities, valued at $55,000, should the bid be successful. If Kamloops wins the bid for either 2025 or
2026, the BC 55-Plus Games would be held in mid-August of those years. Meanwhile, volunteers for next month’s national Games are still being sought. Those interested in lending a hand can call 250-8283823 or email info@kamloops55games.com. Sponsors for the Canada 55-Plus Games include Berwick on the Park, Hub International, BDO, Fulton, Rocky Mountaineer, and Kamloops Sports Legacy Fund. Media sponsors include Kamloops This Week, Pattison Media, Stingray Radio and Kamloops BC Now.

Blazers make Hay with return of Don to bench DON HAY NAMED ASSOCIATE COACH AS HE BEGINS THIRD STINT WITH CLUB KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
Don Hay is returning to the Kamloops Blazers. The former head coach of the Western Hockey league club has been hired as an associate coach for the upcoming season. Hay rejoins the Blazers after spending the past four seasons as an assistant and associate coach with the Portland Winterhawks, a position he took after leaving the Blazers as head coach in 2018. Hay started his coaching career as an assistant coach with his hometown Blazers in 1985, a position he held until 1992, when he was named head coach of the team, where he remained until 1995, winning two Memorial Cups as head coach and a third title as an assistant. Hay has also coached for Calgary, Phoenix and Anaheim in the NHL, for Utah in the AHL and spent 10 seasons at the helm of the Vancouver Giants, where he won a
fourth Memorial Cup. “We are thrilled to welcome Don back to the hockey club,” Blazers’ general manager and head coach Shaun Clouston said in a statement. “Don has a wealth of knowledge and experience in our league. We believe he will be a positive contributor to our team as we continue to build on our recent success over the past few seasons.” Hay is the winningest coach in WHL history, with 750 career victories and seven league championships. The Blazers have also extended the contract of Clouston, who has been head coach since 2019 and took on the dual role of coach/ GM in the summer of 2021. He has a record of 107-39-6-1 over three seasons with the Blazers, with the team winning the BC Division title in each of those three seasons. Clouston has 498 career WHL wins as a head coach, which is first among all active WHL coaches.
Logan Stankoven (left) and Dylan Garand will help Team Canada as it seeks gold at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton this month.
Garand, Stankoven on World Junior roster KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
Two Kamloops Blazers are part of Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, which will begin next week in Edmonton. The tourney was halted last winter due to COVID19 outbreaks. Goaltender Dylan Garand, who will likely play professional this coming season, and forward Logan Stankoven, who will be returning to the Blazers in September, will don the Maple Leaf in Alberta. Garand was a member of the Canadian team that captured a silver medal at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship, also held in Edmonton.
In all, eight Western Hockey League clubs are represented on the Canadian roster, with the Blazers and Everett Silvertips each providing two players. The Brandon Wheat Kings, Edmonton Oil Kings, Moose Jaw Warriors, Regina Pats, Vancouver Giants and Winnipeg Ice are all represented by one player on the Canadian roster. The Canadian squad is holding training camp until Aug. 7 at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on the Tsuut’ina Nation south of Calgary. Canada’s tournament opener at the World Junior Championship is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 10 against Latvia, with faceoff at 3 p.m. Kamloops time. All games will be broadcast on TSN.

You were so loved and you are so missed.
Marissa had 2 favorite songs. She would love if you play her songs and listen along with her in heaven. 1. Jealous of the angels by Donna Taggart.
A message from Heaven Perhaps you aren’t ready yet to have to say goodbye.... Perhaps you’ve thought of things you wish you’d said – well, so have I. For one thing, I’d have told you not to worry about me.... I’m with the Lord in Heaven nowyou knew that’s where I’d be. I’m sorry that you’re feeling sad for I’m so happy now... I’ve asked the Lord to ease the hurt and comfort you somehow. It’s hard at the beginning, but I know you’ll make it through. I hope it helps to know, that I’ll be waiting here for you.
2. I can only imagine by Mercy Me.
One of Marissa’s favorite pastime was to feed the marmots at McArthur Island. If you like to go to that spot, a bench now sits at her favorite spot in her memory. Don’t forget to bring carrots.
Missing you our beautiful daughter and sister, Marvin and Mary Derkatch and Tristan, Tyler & Ashley Derkatch.

Looking to improve the educational opportunities for their young family, Ralph and Clara moved to Kamloops. Here Ralph worked as the Regional Biologist for the BC Government. Ralph was instrumental in bringing Bighorn Sheep to the area in the mid sixties and any of the sheep you see today whether by Tranquille, Sun Rivers or Cherry Creek, are descendants of those first sheep. When not working he would be found in the great outdoors. An avid fisherman, hunter, canoeist, and cross-country skier, he revelled in the opportunities that the area had to offer. His passion for birding grew as he grew older. He and Clara travelled the world looking for new birds and natural places to enjoy. He was an active member of the Kamloops Naturalist Club, the Kamloops Fish and Game Club, and worked on many projects that benefitted the wildlife and wild spaces of the region. He will be sorely missed by his immediate family and the scores of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that knew and loved him.
Fly Me He understands every mode of force He knows what’s true of the elements He is subtle but genuine at lift off and landing
Ingrid Caines
In our homes she is fondly remembered, Sweet memories cling to her name. Those who loved her in life sincerely, Still love her in death just the same.
Raised in Kentville, Nova Scotia, he always had a passion for the great outdoors. After serving his country as a telegraph operator with the Navy in the dangerous Atlantic during WW2 he made his way out west to study biology at the University of British Columbia. From there he moved into the Upper Clearwater Valley (Wells Gray Provincial Park) and served as a Park Ranger and Biologist, studying and enumerating everything from moose, caribou and grizzlies, through to salamanders, grouse, and bats. It was here he met his wife-to-be, Clara Helset, and soon their family grew to include four children, a tame moose, and dogs too numerous to mention.
In lieu of flowers you could make a donation in his name to the Kamloops Naturalist Club to be used for the wildlife viewing platform that will be built out at his beloved Tranquille Pond.

ELIZABETH KARPLUK 1933-2022
Elizabeth Karpluk died at age 88 on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, with family by her side. She was predeceased by husband Alex Karpluk. She will be missed by her children: Lindsey Karpluk (Janice), John Karpluk (Marie-Ellen), Paula Swint (Terry) and Teresa Wallace (Kevin), son in-law Reg Swint, grandchildren Nicolas (Aya), Brynden (Alexa), Jessica (Jeremy), Steen, Cara, Matthew (Christina), Alix and Nicole, great grandchildren Molly, Johannes and Hudson, with three more on the way. She is survived by her sister Phyllis Newman (Wilbert) and sister-in-law Liz Kryzanowski. She was also predeceased by parents Phillip and Mary Krezanowski, brother John Kryzanowski (Liz), sister Angela (John) and many Lower Mainland and Alberta relatives. Many special family pets included dogs Roosevelt, Macy, Winston and Marty and the hop farm cats. Elizabeth — known as “Baba” — was born in 1933 on the family farm in Chipman, Alberta to Mary and Phillip Krezanowski. The first of four children, she had many responsibilities on the farm. At age 16, she left home to complete high school. She talked about riding to school on a cart pulled by a Shetland pony. When she finished school, Liz moved to Edmonton and worked as a seamstress at the Army and Navy, sewing GW jeans before she took a job in advertising at Woodward’s, where she painted signs, set up windows and decorated floats for Klondike Days. At night, she was a coat-check girl at a popular dance club, where she met Al. Liz and Al were married in Edmonton and moved to Kamloops, where they raised four children. Al was a CNR engineer and, during a long strike, Liz used her seamstress skills to help family cashflow by sewing bridal dresses. Unbelievably, they were priced $30 for 30 or more hours of work by hand. Liz became famous as the neighbourhood’s top baker. She made endless cookies, cakes, pies, donuts and loaves of bread. Her children remember coming home from school to freshly baked goodies, which were shared with friends and others in the neighbourhood. Liz also often had a big pot of borscht on the stove and made the world’s best perogies and cabbage rolls, harkening back to her Ukrainian heritage. Liz was so famous for her cooking that she had a regular segment on Lois Cutler’s television show, which aired in the afternoons on CFJC TV. Liz’s home garden was abundant with vegetables, fruit and flowers. Most family summers were spent canning and freezing to prepare for winter, with nothing going to waste. Liz drove Al to work at all hours so she could have access to the car and drive the children around to various activities. In between, she volunteered for minor hockey, Brownies (as Snowy Owl), sewed uniform numbers and dance outfits, coached softball, taught sewing for parks and rec and delivered Meals on Wheels. She styled her children’s hair when they were gymnasts and divers, processing Toni perms to keep up with hair fashion of the time. As a long-standing member of Kamloops Curling Club, Liz also became a curler of note. She curled in any league she was permitted, including: the CNRA, Kami Business Girls, the Nisei League and a variety of seniors leagues. She helped initiate floor curling in Kamloops, which still exists today for seniors at the Heritage House downtown. Her greatest curling accolades included: two eight-enders (one in ice curling and one in floor curling), winning the B.C. Senior Women’s Curling Championship, being named all-star lead at the Canadian Seniors Curling Championship (which she attended three times) and her induction into the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame in 2020 for competitive consistency on the Eve Skakun Rink. She made more than 20 trips to the senior games. When the children grew up, Liz went back to work as a floral designer. She worked for Sahali Flowers and Newell Flower Shop and eventually bought and operated her own store, Flowers by Valleyview, where she cut flowers alongside her daughter, Paula. Liz enjoyed doing deliveries, so she could go out and visit everyone who received beautiful bouquets. Al died too young, which was difficult on Liz. Soon, however, eight grandchildren came along and a traveling companion in Wilf Schneider. Baba was an amazing grandmother, always delivering birthday gifts, cheering on the sidelines for every sport and giving the best back scratches and hugs. She fostered three generations of Kamloops residents. Liz and Wilf loved to take cruises to exotic locations and bus trips to Reno and Leavenworth to see the Christmas lights. Liz also loved camping, fishing, golf and watching the Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos. Liz was a devoted Catholic and founding member of Holy Family Parish in Valleyview. She was a charter member for decades in the Catholic Women’s League. She worked tirelessly for any event or mission the church commissioned until her first stroke, advocated for pro-life and supported St. Ann’s Academy. She made more than 100 blood donations. Her charity work went beyond what can be measured.

Standing less than five feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, Liz was small in stature but had the biggest heart. She loved her family until her heart stopped beating at RIH. Her family will miss her big smile and blue eyes and will forever strive to emulate her selflessness, though her shoes seem impossible to fill. The family would like to thank Dr. Baker of Calgary and Dr. Kelly of RIH 6 North, along with numerous nurses and care aides, who allowed her to die with dignity and comfort. Liz’s personal care aide, Bonnie Tindall, was a huge support and dear friend to the family, guiding them on Liz’s journey.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Marjie Ruth Holdsworth (nee Kay) of Kamloops, BC on July 11, 2022. She was the loving wife of Eric for 66 years who predeceased her in 2017. Marjie is fondly remembered by her daughters, Barb (Ern) and Janice (Barry), and was predeceased by her adored son Jason in 1994. She was Nana to Shannon, Brett, Steven and Devan and was predeceased by grandsons Damon and Dylan. She was blessed with six great-grandchildren Abby, Justin, Hannah, Joshua, Olivia and Mylah. Marjie cherished her time with Eric at Wild Rose Bay in the lovely log house they built together for their retirement. They welcomed family and friends often to share and enjoy their wonderful haven. In Marjie's lifetime, she was a school secretary, an avid reader mostly of history, an artist and she played the piano beautifully. She was a woman full of grace and poise. There was nothing Marjie liked better than family, good company, and a cigarette paired with a glass of her homemade red wine with her best friend Teddy the cat, by her side. Those we love don't go away They walk beside us everyday Unseen, unheard, but always near so loved, so missed, so very dear In loving memory In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.

OTHERS WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE Others who have gone before Hold up my trembling hand. They comfort me in the blind despair I cannot understand. They suffer with me when I hurt, Weep with me in my pain, Remind me that we are not lost ... Though I must now remain. Those who’ve gone before me, Hear me when I cry. Sing softly with me soothing chords Of unsung lullabies. Mourn anniversaries never marked, A future I cannot keep. They gently kiss the pain away, And love my heart to sleep. The ones who’ve gone before me Hold me in my dreams. They gently stroke my furrowed brow, And calm my silent screams. They love me in my heartache, Wait quietly nearby., Hold patiently, one to another Till I join them by and by.
Drake Smith, MSW Funeral Director Every Wednesday in KTW! Q. Can I make Mom’s ashes into something like a diamond ring? A. A few people ask about this but drop the subject when they hear about the cost (thousands of dollars). Every member of a family seems to have their own needs. Sometimes it’s hard to meet everyone’s needs. Respectful discussion helps.

Patrick Albert Young 1948 - 2022
Patrick Albert Young, born in Burns Lake, BC on March 10, 1948, passed away age 74 on July 15, 2022 at home peacefully with loving wife Alice at his side. Pat is survived by wife Alice; sons Gary (Rhonda), Troy, (Erin), and Rogi; stepchildren Julia (Greg), and Terry (Wendy); grand kids Tyson, Regan, Taylor, Morgan, Nolan, Riordan, Henry, Tillie, Callum, Alexandra, Sydney, Logan, Keagan, and Dane; brother Larry (Lucy), sisters Maureen and Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews and extended family. Pat is predeceased by his first wife Rosemary and his foster mom Nan. Growing up in Telkwa, Pat was in the foster system, raised by Nan until at age 13 when, through some brushes with the law Pat ended up being told to go logging or go to reform school (it was an easy decision for him) and he went to work in the woods. Eventually working with Pete Aslin, he was given life lessons and mentored by Pete, leading to a friendship that lasted until Pete passed. Pat had strong ties with Wet’suwet’en from an early age, starting with his playing ball with the Telkwa Bums; this is where he met lifelong friend, Moricetown play Warner William. These relationships fostered his future business, Pat regularly developed a relationship with the First Nations in the area, working with Nazko, Kelly Lake, Lheidli T’enneh, McLeod Lake, We Wai Kai, and Witset. Pat founded Roga Contracting in 1973, with a single truck and the desire to make his family’s life better. He quickly expanded into logging and bought his first log loader and skidder in 1977, adding a feller-buncher the next year. Not wanting to rely on a single company for work Pat held contracts throughout BC and Alberta, moving his family to work in 100 Mile House, 70 Mile House, Alexis Creek, Chezacut, Williams Lake, Grande Cache, Grande Prairie, Mackenzie, Kamloops, Campbell River, and Prince George. Over the years, Pat worked at Haida Gwaii, Mid Coast, Sooke, on the BC-NWT border, on the BC-US border, on the BC-AB border, and into Alberta at Whitecourt, Grande Cache, and Grande Prairie. He covered the province and more working high lead logging, handfalling, mechanical logging, building road, driving truck, and he tried to improve them all by seeing better ways to get the work done. Pat also worked construction, running equipment while opening up Endako Mine, supervising on the Dome Creek – McBride highway, and being superintendent on the highway between Alexandria and Sheep Creek. He was good in construction, but his love was always logging. In 1993 Pat moved his family to Kamloops after purchasing a contract with Riverside. Pat and Rose purchased a house in Westwold overlooking the valley, living a simple life of work and Blazers hockey games. In 2000 Rose was taken by cancer and Pat did what he did in tough times, he put his head down and worked harder. A few years later he and Alice got together. They lived their life together in Kamloops and Campbell River, working, traveling, scuffing motorhomes, running borders, buying and selling a home in Arizona, and enjoying one another’s company, they were happy together to the end. Pat lived an extraordinary life, leading in the forest industry, always liking to innovate and find a better way to get things done safely. Pat cared for others, was always trying to build and develop a better way forward for people, mentoring people in business and life. We witnessed this through his actions with our family and the business. In lieu of flowers please donate to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation: https://donate.bcchf.ca/site/Donation2?1722.donation=form1&df_id=1722&mfc_pref=T Memorial service will be held September 16, 2022 (doors open at 1, service at 3PM) at Coast Kamloops Hotel & Conference Centre, 1250 Rogers Way, Kamloops, BC V1S 1N5.
